  • Saxifragaceae is a fascinating family of plants. While some of local common species like Tiarella can be found abundantly in the woods, many specialize in occupying specific niches in habitat. From waterways, to bald rock outcrops, to alpine tundra, many of the more interesting members are only found if you know were to look! In this video, we cover two of the earliest blooming members of the family found in New England, and two of the earliest blooming New England plants in general!
    Plants of interest:
    Micranthes virginiensis - "Early Saxifrage"
Chrysosplenium americanum - "American Golden Saxifrage"

I’ve found this growing in a rocky, elevated area right near my house in Wellesley-and nowhere else (yet).

You'll only find it growing in rocky outcrops, but it can be quite abundant in its niche!
