A lot of Americans freak out when they think about this road though, judging by some I have talked to. This guy is pretty good so pay attention. I don't know much about border crossings etc. but extra food and gas is a good thing. I always travel with extra food and gas but never had to use it in an emergency...but it is so comfortable to have.
Driven Whitehorse to Mile zero 100 times winter and summer. Never had a flat. Gas can good idea but the longest stretch between main gas stations is 300 miles, usually much less. You can drive by a gas station that's pricey if you plan a bit. Look at a map, they are free in Yukon

It’s a good idea having two spares doing A cross country east to west in the US, driving through long stretches of desert or mountains, good luck finding a tire shop, so definitely two on the road to Alaska through Canada.
The roads aren't that bad but it can be muddy in construction areas. If you don't go off road, you shouldn't need 2 spare tires unless your tires are bad. I did the trip by motorcycle from Michigan towing a small camper trailer with 8" wheels and had no problems.

I’m planning on driving a truck up with my brother from Washington to North Pole, Alaska at the end of November. It’s a brand new truck and is winterized. I’m very used to driving in snow and ice living in Alaska. Any tips for winter driving ?
Yes, bring along about 5 gallons of extra gas just to be on the safe side. There are some long stretches of the road that don't have gas stations, and some of them shut down during the winter. That, and gas efficiency isn't as high in the winter because it's designed to be thicker.
I have driven the ALCAN 5 times. Here is my commentary on the "tips" tip 1: Either bring an extra tire or be okay with the trip taking extra time. I have had one flat tire on the trip and if there wasn't a full-size spare available it would have been a 5 day wait for a replacement. tip 2: bullshit hysteria, there is gas at major intervals. Buy a Milepost and study it, if you are going for a long stretch fill up earlier than necessary. tip 3: Yes. get your paperwork taken care of and check it out in advance. tip 4: Sure, bring some water and food, but don't go overboard. There are plenty of people on the road and every time I have seen people on the side of the road there are good samaritans ready to help. tip 5: Not an issue. Yes there are dead spots but there is internet at the gas stations. tip 6: 100% Milepost is better than the Bible out there. tip 7: Bring a credit card and know what the currency exchange is on the card. tip 8: This is expired with the times. tip 9: Sure, but this is a small number of travelers. tip 10: Duh - this is international travel. He's stretching this out tip 11: See tip 10 tip 12: You should do this with any travel trailer. Not trip specific Bonus: Not a thing outside of normal life
That was a provision from A WHILE ago. At one point, that's what their website said, but it's changed since then. Kinda impossible to do that, which is why I bet they changed it.
6:16 24 freaking hours!!??? Brother, tell me how that is even possible. You've got treacherous terrain that can take DAYS to get through including resting eventually throughout the trip. GPS says it takes almost 40 hours to get from Washington border to Alaska border. I hope I heard that wrong because that sounds insane to me!!
I would personally shoot for after May if you can. Keep in mind, March is still going to be winter up there. Not the end of the world if you can't make that work, but it's certainly preferable.

I am planning to drive through the alcan high way with my honda civic hatchback sport 2020 around the first week of April. Will I make it?
Yeah you got it. Just take your time on the bumpy parts and slow down on turns and you'll be fine.
Trying to help my aunt move her new suv to Ak. What is the boarder like if I am helping her drive the alcan.
Speaking to canada border officials ahead of time is smart because of pandemic rules, and plus they have the best answers
Will gps work for navigation, is there a 24 hour travel requirement to go through Canada? Downloaded the arriveapp thank you!
No 24 hour travel requirement checked Canada website
Good deal, they changed that!
ARE YOU SAYING THAT YOU ONLY HAVE 24HR FROM ENTERING CANNADA TO RE ENTERING THE USA AGAIN?
Typically, how are the road conditions late March/early April?
Sloshy. The snow is melting at that time and there will usually be a lot of mud.
@@alaska_realtor too much mud to drive safely? we'll have a small-mid size SUV hauling a 3k (or less) lb trailer
I have driven the ALCAN 5 times. Here is my commentary on the "tips"
tip 1: Either bring an extra tire or be okay with the trip taking extra time.
He's stretching this out
tip 11: See tip 10
tip 12: You should do this with any travel trailer. Not trip specific
Bonus: Not a thing outside of normal life
What do you mean about the 24-hour deal to get through Canada?
That was a provision from A WHILE ago. At one point, that's what their website said, but it's changed since then. Kinda impossible to do that, which is why I bet they changed it.
What are the conditions like in mid-October?
Cold and likely getting the first snow of the year. It's coming early this year it feels.
Make sure .
24 hours to get through the Yukon Territories.
SO WHATS THE AVERAGE SPEED LIMIT GOING THROUGHT CANNADA? IF YOU HAVE SUCH A SMALL TIME LIMIT OR TIME SPAN IN GETTING THROUGH CANNADA?
i took 6 days and they didn't have problem with that
What's the trip like today ?
Really interesting and helpful info!
Thank you!
What time of year is the best to travel. We were thinking of doing it in the middle of March.
I would personally shoot for after May if you can. Keep in mind, March is still going to be winter up there. Not the end of the world if you can't make that work, but it's certainly preferable.
Can I travel with firearms from WA to AK?
Through Canada? Technically, but it's pretty challenging. I would just ship them if you can do it.
Is it rough on class A motor homes?
Had to watch this again. I gotta get the current mile post and headed to Amazon right now to order an Atlas if they still even exist. hehe
It's a solid purchase!
@@alaska_realtor Just ordered on Amazon and should be here the 13th. I ordered the Nat Geo Atlas as well. I'm trying to convince the wife to turn the GPS and all the fancy stuff on this new truck off and lets travel like we did when we were teens........So far, no luck. hehe.
Hey I’m on military orders to to go to Alaska. How unsafe is it to drive through ALCAN at the end of October?
That's going to depend on how much stuff you're bringing with you, but I would strongly advice against it. Can you take the ferry?
@@alaska_realtor I will hopefully hear back from the travel agent today or tomorrow on taking a ferry. If we were to make the drive it would just be my wife and I in a Nissan Pathfinder that is decently packed.
@@Arnold2217 Gotcha. I would say that it would be highly preferrable to take the ferry. The roads will likely be OK, but there are a lot of restrictions on traveling out there at the moment and dealing with that on top of the winter would make it an extra challenge. Let me know!
@@alaska_realtor unfortunately the agent said everything is booked til December 28th so we will have to drive the Alcan. I do have a ferry scheduled from Whittier to Kodiak. Now I’m just researching what is still open and the safest way to get to Whittier. Thank you for creating your video, it was really helpful.
@@Arnold2217 Roger that. I'm going to try to interview one my clients who recently drove the Alcan to see what they experienced. They're awesome people so be looking for that and let me know if you have any questions I can help with!
IS THERE ANYWAY THAT YOU KNOW OF TO REQUEST A LONGER TIME LIMIT IN GETTING THROUGH CANNADA IF YOU ARE DISABLED AND YOUR DISABILITY IS LIMITING YOU IN THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOUR ABLE OR ALLOWED TO OPERATE YOUR CAR EACH DAY?
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFROMATION ON THIS WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY HELPFUL POINTS YOU COULD GIVE TO ME...?
Experts say 1 tire if you have very good quality tires to begin with
I won't be making this trip until I can lollygag.
I disagree. After driving this route twice, I’ve found that the hype surrounding the difficultly of the road is way overblown. There are way worse roads in the states, where I live.
Oh for sure there are more challenging roads! There's always a more challenging road, but what makes the Alcan unique is that most people on it are going to be towing a trailer.
Lol which roads?
It was useful, but this is the only video that actually made me fearful of traveling
How out of date is this? I thought you were allowed now to visit Canada???
Last I heard you can drive through if you're moving to AK but not just to visit.
i'm going to be making the drive up to canada from san diego in april and i'm only taking my car (a kia soul) and anything that can fit inside it. before i leave, i plan on having my car completely checked and like new to avoid any possible mishaps. is the alcan as scary for a regular car as it is for large ones? i want to make sure i'm safe but i also want to make sure i'm able to fit everything i need in my car at the same time. any tips or info would be appreciated.
That's exciting Charlie! You should be able to make it, as long as you have some kind of snow tire/all weather tires and you don't weigh it down too much. It'll be during breakup when you're driving.
The glare off your head blinded me thx
6:25 Nice burping sequence, thanks for sharing , geez , how about a re-do of that 10 seconds
Anytime. Tune in next time and I'll include some farting sequences.
@@alaska_realtor Can't wait!
And have a new spare tire on it
24 hours to get from one border to an other...really?
No handguns nor mace
We've never had any trouble taking bear spray across the border. Just fyi.....
@@throwaway692 you shouldn’t have, bear spray is ok, mace is definitely not.
@@JeepCherokeeful Yeah... I screwed that up! LOL! I also found out I was mistaken about the kinds of firearms the Canadians will allow.
@@throwaway692 and handguns require a special permit!
@@JeepCherokeeful No handguns. I was just concerned that they might not allow my semiauto shotgun. But it looks like that's ok so long as it's at least a certain length. I don't plan on doing any hunting. And we always observe good practice for bears. But sometimes they don't always get the message. And I'm not going into the Yukon with nothing but bear spray.
I’d recommend to absolutely not download that app.
Really? What was your experience?
@@alaska_realtor think “big brother “ and the utter failure of governments to prevent hackers from accessing their databases. Other than that, it’s just wonderful;(
@@JeepCherokeeful Good to be aware of. Thank you!
Sorry, bring money? Wow.
Huh? you mean Canadia isn't a US state? 🤣
Sorry this is a very generic video no real info.
Sorry you think that. Feel free to check out the podcast and I interview a lot of people about the trip on the Alcan.
Y soooo many thumbsdown..you are found wanting, do better nxt time.
How about driving this in a Jetta in the winter
You know it would probably be OK, my concern would be if something did happen if you could get it repaired there
