Officials face big challenges involving new homelessness law

  • October 1 may seem like a long way away. But sleeping on public property becomes illegal that day in Florida, and local governments have three months to decide what to do about providing shelter for homeless individuals.
    Here in Palm Beach County, that means housing more than 2,000 people and community leaders are scrambling to find solutions.
    Palm Beach County Homeless Advisory Board member Ezra Krieg responded to a question about whether they were worried about being ready by October 1 to find housing for all of them, simply replied, "Absolutely worried about it. Absolutely worried about it."
