I have the 192hp Toyota Corolla T-Sport and love it. All stock, packs a punch. I bet the others do too - these were days of fierce competition! Hatchbacks are great for hiding your power, I was pulled over in my Saab Turbo and my Audi A4 Sport but never once in my Toyota Corolla. ;)
I can't take an opinion from someone who chooses to drive 10 to 2 after passing their test, just cannot. The Rolla deserves more praise than what these are giving it. Its actually a really reliable motor.
I can remember watching this particular TV series with excitement back in 2002... I can't believe that its 17 years ago now. There was huge hype about the new Honda Civic Type R (EP3) in the motoring media at that time. It was annihilating all of the other Hot Hatches for the life time of its production. The motoring critics just loved it and even today it is still a favourite with every motor mouth over the modern day Civic Type R's.... Turbo has killed the Honda N/A V-TEC screamers.... And our bent governments!! This is precisely why these magnificent Classic Honda Type R's should be cherished and treasured. Thanks for posting.
clocktower7 I had a 2004 EP3 which I owned for 6 years from new - loved it so much. Would never consider a Honda hot hatch these days. I currently have an Audi S3 and whilst incredibly quick, it doesn’t have the soul of the EP3, or the Peugeot 106 GTI I owned before that!
Never drove a car that picks up after 6000rpm? Clearly didnt push the corolla then given its near like for like straight line as the type R and has near same type of characteristics from the engine and as a Ts owner for a year so far I still never get enough of the speed and change over, its not in your face which is good so surprises some people and its comfortable both short n long trips.
Its_ Mo I have a blue sr corolla, I find it looks better than a 3 door, has a nicer front bumper too, much of that chrome effect chip off your gearnob?
that particular T-sport wasn't great, the engine revisions in 2004 made it better, it's on par with the civic but because the toyota is seen as an old mans car its always underrated and therefore cheaper to insure. the T-Sport was only 1.5 seconds slower than the T-Sport Compressor
I own a T-Sport, paid £700 and it's the most reliable car I've know despite that I thrash it. I don't want people to know how powerful it is, my insurance is peanuts ! Probably the best sleeper thanks to it's bland looks ? Do I care....nah - surprising the hell outa other drivers on the road (including motorbikes) and track (with a set of extra wheels with Toyo semi-slicks) is what it's all about. Twocommon bemoans - suspension a bit 'whale-ish' and stock brakes are on the limit. So, stiffer, lower springs, strut braces front and rear with vented discs front and rear - the rest is stock and my wife loves it as a daily too. What's it worth today - who cares...always puts a smile on my face and wipes off those of others. ;-)
295mm discs and calipers from the avensis 98 03 fit straight on ,discs need drilling to accept 4 bolt pattern. The lsd from a mr2 goes straight into the gearbox aswell.
Have driven and owned all currently have a 182. Imo I miss the Corolla as it was a real sleeper and an incredible engine. Not great handling or as precise as ctr or clio but more fun and usable as a daily
The Corrolla T Sport and Honda Civic Type R are the best cars in this video ... the others are literal crap after 10 years. In addition, those chavs don't know that the Corrola T Sport Engine was designed partly by Yamaha bikes (it even says on the engine). It uses a bike chain instead of rubber one. Therefore it never needs to be replaced ... just tightened and the engine responsiveness is better due to that. The engine red lines at 8200 rpm which is madness and the BHP to litre (192 bhp from 1.8 L) was the best till the Honda's S2000 engine was made (223 BHP from 2.0). Oh and lastly the same engine (2zz) was used in the Lotus Elise and Exige ... these clowns know nothing.
Toyota is heavy, as is Honda. Clio is 200kg lighter and subsequently will show either a clean pair of heels to both on a track. That's just looking at it's weight advantage, before you even get into the gulf in chasis development. Renault were miles ahead of Honda in terms of chasis tuning, let alone Toyota. The Toyota engine is interesting, the Honda has a lovely crisp gearbox, but not the stock Vtec lump that you really want, (that'd be the F20C high compression JDM spec found only in Jap AP1 S2K's)...but ultimately it's low cost, low weight (let's not forget cup spec cars which are even lighter still) and massive aftermarket support which makes getting the F4R to make lots more power cheap and easy...is the reason that track days all over Europe are full of Clio Sports, not Toyota Corollas. As for the rest, early Golf GTi's and Pug' 205 GTi's will be heralded in automotive museums commanding large investment values long before the Corolla is a rusty pile in a scrapyard, because they were properly styled by the world's leading Italian design houses, whereas the Toyota was based on an econobox without a momentary consideration for style. I know which I and the vast majority would rather own. Being in the majority doesn't make me right, being in the minority doesn't make you wrong, but the way you so self assuredly proclaimed that all the others are crap makes you appear rather small minded. They're not crap, and they'll be appreciated long after the Corolla is forgotten, in fact they already are.
Makes me laugh when people review cars, but don't know how to drive them lol. The corolla is a cracking car, it might not look that sporty compared to some, but it's not just about looks. Ironic these guys would push the Type R, but not the corolla considering they both rev above 8000rpm.
Civic type R with a better power to weight than a lotus elise? That is impossible considering the Elise has the same engine as the Corolla T sport(Which makes about the same power as the one in the civic) and yet the Elise weighs significantly less than all 3 of these cars... Lol better power to weight ratio than an elise... An elise would kill that civic!
Funny the tsport isn't even the best version of the corolla as they have a 215bhp supercharged vvtli which is the top model, the clio and civic are there manufacturers top spec... 🤔😉
Gonna buy me a t-sport with tte compressor, love the whine this thing makes, maybe mod it a little bit, and stiffen up the suspension and upgrade the brakes, it will be so much fun...

t-sport best engine all day long. You with me?
no
Yes! The 2zzge has been one of the most underrated engines Toyota have EVER made, similar to the 3GSE & 3GSTE

Once you hit 5k revs somethings happens and it gets faster. And they asked these to test these cars.
3 to 6, baby, 3 to 6. Everyone knows this...

The Corolla T Sport is the best car and the fastest car there!
Exactly well i have an sr 2005 petrol i doubt u know what it is but it looks way more agressive that the t sport
The best? Er, no. The worst? Yes.
Its_ Mo I have a blue sr corolla, I find it looks better than a 3 door, has a nicer front bumper too, much of that chrome effect chip off your gearnob?
yes the best, the fastest and the best handling one

dc2 integra had 200 hp aswell with 1.8n/a , ek9 1.6 185hp
Owning Clio Sport 172 from 2001, so 17 years old, drives great and nothing is crap.
syed bokhari I agree with you... Unfortunately, the Corolla TSport was underrated all the time...
Anyway, still one of my dream cars!
Actually, a rubber belt engine has a better responsiveness due to less weight of the distribution system.

"These cars will spend most of their lives in busy cities"
Uhh... No mate.
Looks like MPV, great words Plato! :)

I don't think any of those chavs know what jason plato do for living and they pretended they can drive in front of him!!!

Probably an older Elise with the Rover K series engine in it. They're a 1.8 160bhp engine.
Good point to be made there
daavee03 The early elises were just 120 bhp from the Non nutty K Series. They were all about the light weight, they weren't that powerful at all!
+AyCarrumba Yeah aha definitely depends on which elise...
daavee03 118 to start out with on the elisr
State of there own "hot hatchs" 205 is the only decent one, mk3 gti golf and hot hatch dont go together and the state of that r5.
TOYOTA🇯🇵

The show was filmed years before t sport compressor came out
The corolla t-sport would beat all of these in a track, even the porsche
Gonna buy me a t-sport with tte compressor, love the whine this thing makes, maybe mod it a little bit, and stiffen up the suspension and upgrade the brakes, it will be so much fun...
type r isnt rally its touring car aint it????
12 grand for a clio?! I just picked mine up for 500 quid!
The Honda...... 5.8s to 40!!! Terrible and doesnt sound even close to its book time to 60 in 6.8s. No way.
lol, it is crude and shit compared to the Civic type R and no where near as exciting
