      To some degree that can make sense. Japanese Armor did have gaps adn they never considered closing the weakpoints for practical reasons. Many helmets like the Barbute would give reasonable protection, but if an arrow comes for your mouth or eyes, you're screwed.
      Speaking of that coat of plates: I would cover first the most probable targets with plates and if then gaps remain, so be it, but I would try to make it harder to spot wehre those gaps are, so that no-one could aim for them intentionally. Still, I'd prefer a well made Brigandine.

    • @2bingtim
      @2bingtim 6 лет назад +1

      Odds of protection functioning 50% at the most. Every plate should be overlapping, working with each adjoining plate to maximise protection; fixed singly & apart they're far less effective even if what is shot/weilded at you hits them. If you fought in a battle it might save you for 5 minutes if you were very luck, but sooner or later it would let you die.

    I have worked in the UPS package warehouse in multiple warehouses. They pay you minimum wage and force you to work extremely fast. They may say as a company they value your packages, but the people who I've seen pack trailers don't. They throw your stuff, step on your stuff and place your stuff under heavy objects if they really are in a hurry. Things get lost by falling off of the platform and getting miss sorted and never got verified into the trailer because some new guy missed a package or a seasoned veteran can't get fired because of union reasons. Speed is more important than quality for UPS and it is enforced on the workers at your cost.

      @@blaze4487 Everything this guy said is true. I worked for UPS in the warehouse for nine years. I'm betting you don't ship expensive fish via ground. The same day and overnight stuff gets the best treatment, and there is a special process for high value items. It's still not great. I once watched $2,500,000 worth of gold bullion that was supposed to to Idaho go down my line in Texas because someone loaded it on the wrong truck. The less people that handle it, the better. No fucks are given about any other package. Always insure your package to the max if shipping UPS.

      It is beginner level sca heavy armor. The point thing doesn't matter that much in becuase we fight with Dowel,s it is rigid enough to protect your kidneys and the impact armor pinch problem is "solved" by having the plates sandwiched between to levels of cloth. No one murder hits beginners because that would dissuade people from joining,so even in hard hitting kingdoms, this would work for a bit. I personally don't there in any practical purpose of wearing armor in hobby that involves being hit with foam and latex swords.

    That is a poor armored sleeved surcoat. It was a short lived mid 13th century to very early 14th early armor that varied between surcoats with plates riveted to a garment made to emulated surcoat tails. The former had plates with gaps had small (just enough for the plates to flex for movement) and the had plates that only cover the chest. The staute of Saint Maurice shows the later construction www.sah.org/images/default-source/blog/fig--3960053adbac8564e5abfcff0000eafba5.jpg?sfvrsn=2

    Speaking of Armor and how expensive it can get... every Halloween my history teacher, Mr. Delaney, like to bring his full suit of crusader armor (and i mean FULL), yell Deus Vult, and only respond to Mr. Delaneyus... And every time we ask about how much it cost he refuses to tell us how much exactly, but he does say a couple thousand... I'm not sure if he's an awsome teacher or just a weird one.

    I'm finally able to put into words why I enjoy watching your videos so much. You confidently point out idiocy and incompetence and laugh at it, which makes me laugh as well. When making an argument, skall always makes sure to state the counter to his argument and then throws that counter into the trash and incinerates it himself. Not just in this video but almost all of them 👌

    I've used a coat of plates almost exactly the same as the one featured in this video and I have found it fantastic. The only part I was worried with was the shoulders and that was easily fixed with light padding on the shoulders. I have never had a serious injury when using this type of coat of plates and would highly recommend it. The problems he raises in this video regarding the gaps in plates have never been a problem for me but it can easily be fixed with a chain mail shirt worn underneath.

    An afterthought, if you didn't want to return, sell, or give the 'armor' you could tear it apart to save the metal plates, I'm sure they're good in and of themselves.

    I agree that this is sub-optimal armor. In my first year at the Battle of the Nations I wore it but had to put a Cherbourg cuirass over it to protect me. The plates in the lower skirts pulled the rivets out of the fabric and fell down, inside the garment. I kept on stitching and re-stitching pockets to put the plates back in their places. Also the plates are so thin that they folded up like a taco shell when struck by a longsword.

    I think you should sew 2 lines up the middle, then cut in between them and fill that area with leather straps and buckles, and plates riveted to the backs of the straps (or maybe on one side sticking across) adding coverage and making it easier to remove.

    In my coat of plates, the plates are 4x8 cm and are 0,5 cm apart. They are riveted on a piece of fabric and further backed by a piece of leather with a linnen cover in the front. I tested it with sharp weapons (because I could). The weapons able to slip between plates do not penetrate more than a few mm (when after about fifty tries you DO hit between plates). It seems they are stopped by the many layers and scraping against the sides of the plates.
    Ofcourse, on your coat of plates you can fit a dane axe sideways between the rows...

    6:20 i have actually put that kind of armor on all by myself and it was properly tighten even. But that said i am way above average when it comes to my joint flexibility (I can literally shake hands with my left and right hand when one is coming from below and one from above behind my back) so majority of people cannot do that and require assistance. So i think frontal locking is the best way to go (If historical accuracy is not the main point then using a Velcro is probably best solution).

    There is something i would like to add to what skall has said. I am in the medical field (but in no means a medical expert) and there is an injury called comotiocortis, this is a swift and substantial blow to the about the center of the sternum, which can cause the heart to stop (cardiac arrest) even in people in amazing shape. Without going too much into detail, a blow delivered at the right time around the center of the sternum can cause someones heart to stop (it disrupts the hearts natural rhythm causing it to stop), which is the reason im so surprised they didn't include a plate (metal or plastic) there. Ive never experienced this in the field before (thank the gods) but ive had many colleagues who have. They are the most common in little league baseball games where the pitcher is inexperienced and accidentally hits the batter at just the right time, causing death. Doing CPR sucks. Doing on a young person is worse. If by any chance the makers see this, at least just add a plastic peace to prevent this possibly fatal injury from occurring.
