ahh skal you lost so much weight im so proud of u been watching for years and the progress is amazing also fresh cut man and the content great as always
I've used a coat of plates almost exactly the same as the one featured in this video and I have found it fantastic. The only part I was worried with was the shoulders and that was easily fixed with light padding on the shoulders. I have never had a serious injury when using this type of coat of plates and would highly recommend it. The problems he raises in this video regarding the gaps in plates have never been a problem for me but it can easily be fixed with a chain mail shirt worn underneath.
I didn't bother watching the video because the thumbnail explained everything. Keep up the good fight for quality products Skal, be it fantasy or reproduction.
You and Shadiversity are teaching me so much about weapons and armour, it's great! I'm totally using it in my fantasy story that I'm writing. :) Thank you!
Skall, I'm really glad to see you reviewed this. I was considering buying it from KoA awhile back, but instead purchased the leather brigandine by Epic Armoury, which seems to be of higher quality and of better make. Seeing it worn on a person tells me I made the better choice. An afterthought, if you didn't want to return, sell, or give the 'armor' you could tear it apart to save the metal plates, I'm sure they're good in and of themselves.
Jesus Christ, just buy stuff from actual reenactor armourers next time. That thing gave me an eye cancer. If you want I can recommend you some good armorsmiths from Poland or Ukraine. Edit: 9:20 I wouldn't say, this "coat of plates" is good enough for practice with blunt swords
Loricamos www.loricamos.vizz.pl/Products_Brigandines,%20Coats%20of%20Plates.htm for example, which I'm personally not a great fan of, but they still make way better coats of plates and brigandines than this shit Skall just bought.
Non-overlapping plated coat like this was used to help your maille shirt spread the force of impact. Adding this on top of your maille shirt would improve the odds off shrugging of a blow with your rib cage intact for sure.
This is like a comedy skit about a Norse warrior who feels burned by the cheap armor he just bought so he makes an angry vlog about it, except it's happening for real.
I agree that this is sub-optimal armor. In my first year at the Battle of the Nations I wore it but had to put a Cherbourg cuirass over it to protect me. The plates in the lower skirts pulled the rivets out of the fabric and fell down, inside the garment. I kept on stitching and re-stitching pockets to put the plates back in their places. Also the plates are so thin that they folded up like a taco shell when struck by a longsword.
I think you should sew 2 lines up the middle, then cut in between them and fill that area with leather straps and buckles, and plates riveted to the backs of the straps (or maybe on one side sticking across) adding coverage and making it easier to remove.
there's actually no point in saying "made from steel or iron"... just say steel, bcs technically pure iron was never produced in history. every possible result of smelting iron ore included, and it still does, an iron alloy with some carbon :P ...pls don't judge me, i'm an engineer :D
Finally!!! Someone made a video about a lamellar type amour👍👍😆😆😆! Glory to God!! Now if only someone would make a video series about these armor types. Lamellar is so rarely discussed, and (to me at least) it needs to be discussed in depth. Anyway, tanks for the vid Skallagrim 👍🏻!
In my coat of plates, the plates are 4x8 cm and are 0,5 cm apart. They are riveted on a piece of fabric and further backed by a piece of leather with a linnen cover in the front. I tested it with sharp weapons (because I could). The weapons able to slip between plates do not penetrate more than a few mm (when after about fifty tries you DO hit between plates). It seems they are stopped by the many layers and scraping against the sides of the plates. Ofcourse, on your coat of plates you can fit a dane axe sideways between the rows...
Wow, that is a terrible design. Leaving a wide unprotected are down the middle is just dumb. That would be the last thing I ever purchased from that company, the price is no excuse. A hundred and sixty dollars for trash is just wasted money. They have no respect for their customers. This really is garbage.
Also, putting the plates on the outside would allow the unsecured adges to catch and bind on things. It's hard to be effective in a fight if you're also having to battle your own armor.
6:20 i have actually put that kind of armor on all by myself and it was properly tighten even. But that said i am way above average when it comes to my joint flexibility (I can literally shake hands with my left and right hand when one is coming from below and one from above behind my back) so majority of people cannot do that and require assistance. So i think frontal locking is the best way to go (If historical accuracy is not the main point then using a Velcro is probably best solution).

We have a strong movement in "historical fighting" not in HEMA but bughurt. So there are a lot of great smiths here, and you can "dress" yourself in good armor for not very high price
You know, I’ve been wondering what a Brigantine was - only ever come across them in Pillars of Eternity and it was tricky to see what it was between the camera angle and such.
There is something i would like to add to what skall has said. I am in the medical field (but in no means a medical expert) and there is an injury called comotiocortis, this is a swift and substantial blow to the about the center of the sternum, which can cause the heart to stop (cardiac arrest) even in people in amazing shape. Without going too much into detail, a blow delivered at the right time around the center of the sternum can cause someones heart to stop (it disrupts the hearts natural rhythm causing it to stop), which is the reason im so surprised they didn't include a plate (metal or plastic) there. Ive never experienced this in the field before (thank the gods) but ive had many colleagues who have. They are the most common in little league baseball games where the pitcher is inexperienced and accidentally hits the batter at just the right time, causing death. Doing CPR sucks. Doing on a young person is worse. If by any chance the makers see this, at least just add a plastic peace to prevent this possibly fatal injury from occurring.
It'll be a gamble, eh? Then I guess you could call it... A GAMBLESON.

Trishooty45 well it's the same as Eddard's and Jon's and that shit looks padded as shit 😂 but they died becaise... Well fuck 'em hahaha
ahh skal you lost so much weight im so proud of u been watching for years and the progress is amazing also fresh cut man and the content great as always
The worst for me are the rivets. They give away the exact positioning of the plates. It is like a "stab elsewhere" neon sign.
Nah, it's more like a "stab _here"_ neon sign.
This was a very good comprehensive and fair critical review. Well done!
0:04 I really want to hug you for some reason lol
Donsmacker1 that’s normal, we all do
Donsmacker1 I will report you to holden
Donsmacker1 DAUBENY!
Intro is meme worthy. Someone make a meme.
Ik, I'll get on it.
Pommels
Rubén Bastida Jiménez ew people who call other people normies, cringest shit.
With that armour on, you look even more like Joakim Broden
Holy shit he kinda does...Maybe they are the same person.
DrakeTheBadgerman lost brothers, maybe?
Naah, Joakim has less hair (and he's starting to bald)
I have never seen Skall amd Joakim in the same room. Coincidence? I think not
Macdeas me neither, suspicious...
That intro killed me 😂😂😂😂
then how did you type that??? you're alive aren't you?? i'll teach you to fake your death at me....lolz, just messing man :]
darthXreven magic 😂😂
That intro killed me...literally. I'm in Valhalla watching this!
btw your warrior hair is radical!
Like always kinsman, well met and love it.
I didn't bother watching the video because the thumbnail explained everything.
Keep up the good fight for quality products Skal, be it fantasy or reproduction.
the inthro was funny as heck and your impresion was undiscribibly halarious.
You and Shadiversity are teaching me so much about weapons and armour, it's great! I'm totally using it in my fantasy story that I'm writing. :) Thank you!

You at the ren fest and this guy smacks your girl's ass. You see he has a pommel. What do you do?
Skall, I'm really glad to see you reviewed this. I was considering buying it from KoA awhile back, but instead purchased the leather brigandine by Epic Armoury, which seems to be of higher quality and of better make. Seeing it worn on a person tells me I made the better choice.
An afterthought, if you didn't want to return, sell, or give the 'armor' you could tear it apart to save the metal plates, I'm sure they're good in and of themselves.
Where did you get that godly gambeson btw?
Armstreet.
More of a coat "with" plates than a coat-of-plates.
Helgis Armour shop on facebook if you need Eastern armor
Kamil Szadkowski How’s Steel Mastery
Lamellar Armor would be an amazing addition to your collection Skallagrim! I highly recommend investing in some!
You shave the sides of your head before winter? You're either crazy or you have a truly amazing winter hat.
Neither. We just don't get "real" winters here. 0 degrees Celsius is considered cold by local standards.
Russian here, summer in Moscow is about 20-30 celsius, 0 is November or late March weather.
Non-overlapping plated coat like this was used to help your maille shirt spread the force of impact. Adding this on top of your maille shirt would improve the odds off shrugging of a blow with your rib cage intact for sure.
Mobility is 50. #whatevenismobility?
Der Doctor *is in a tank* mobility is great
Lol I'm dying
Put it up on Ebay as Tactical Outdoor Survival Jacket.
Added random splashes of coffe = Woodland Camo.
Also the plates are so thin that they folded up like a taco shell when struck by a longsword.
if you find a good one do a comparison of the difference in quality
I think you should sew 2 lines up the middle, then cut in between them and fill that area with leather straps and buckles, and plates riveted to the backs of the straps (or maybe on one side sticking across) adding coverage and making it easier to remove.
It kinda looks like the Minecraft armor :)
That intro was PERFECT!
there's actually no point in saying "made from steel or iron"... just say steel, bcs technically pure iron was never produced in history. every possible result of smelting iron ore included, and it still does, an iron alloy with some carbon :P ...pls don't judge me, i'm an engineer :D
It's still called iron, by engineers.
Are you positive you didn't order a straitjacket?
TheExegetic haha I thought that too
Such a good intro
What the heck was that opening?
An intro
To think I actually thought about buying this thing a while ago. Thanks for the heads up!

What is this xD
a video duh
A person
I came for the click bait
That sword makes a satisfying noise, thanks for the neat vid.
Wow, that is a terrible design. Leaving a wide unprotected are down the middle is just dumb. That would be the last thing I ever purchased from that company, the price is no excuse. A hundred and sixty dollars for trash is just wasted money. They have no respect for their customers. This really is garbage.
"Hey... Uh... This make me look fat?" Instant like cuz of how quickly the video made me laugh. Gotta love Skall's sense of humor.
Why are the plates on the inside rather than the outside?
snowsurfer 251, To protect from weathering or being dislodged. That part isn't actually a negative to the design.
first of all it protects them from water and its good for concealment
Also, putting the plates on the outside would allow the unsecured adges to catch and bind on things. It's hard to be effective in a fight if you're also having to battle your own armor.
Historically that is how they were made. That is where this nonsense about studded leather armor came from.
This looks like a good idea for outfitting extras in a medieval fantasy movie. It's more accurate than what Hollywood has in their supply closets.
Fridge armor.
Not sure if it really matters, but the aorta is the big curved blood vessel. The straight one that the arrows are pointing at is the vena cava.
my god my armour made of boxes when I was a kid has better design them this
6:20 i have actually put that kind of armor on all by myself and it was properly tighten even.
Hideous, and ineffective. A brig is not only way prettier, but more effective
Thats a nice buckle you've got there Skall.
Anyone else hear his wife laughing in the intro?
TheHonestLiar i didnt...
Those straps on the side... they look like they are from a straight jacket. Which explains why it's so hard to get out of.

That looks WAY better.
Artem Korolkov I am surprised those look great!
We have a strong movement in "historical fighting" not in HEMA but bughurt. So there are a lot of great smiths here, and you can "dress" yourself in good armor for not very high price
That's what I call brigantine!
7:52 "Just gonna fiddle with this a bit longer, and if i'm not getting anywhere i'll call cara" Oh dear...
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Skall is demonetized
I came for pommel jokes just like you
You know, I’ve been wondering what a Brigantine was - only ever come across them in Pillars of Eternity and it was tricky to see what it was between the camera angle and such.
Looks good.
Skallagrim and the video, not the plates of course.
I’ve always wondered where he got that gambeson, it looks cool as heck
If by any chance the makers see this, at least just add a plastic peace to prevent this possibly fatal injury from occurring.
i am an emergency medical technician in case anyone was wondering.
That armour looks like it was built to help you get killed.
