Funny, one of my first jackets is a navy blazer with brass buttons, British style aka double breasted. Back then I didn't have much knowledge about double breasted style but I thrifted that blazer just because I like that millitary style. Even sometimes I wear it with matching pants make it mix between blazer and suit
I never stopped wearing a double breasted suit; it's just that NOBODY sells them anymore and I can't get one to wear. The double breasted suit was and still is my favorite suit jacket. I'd choose dark navy with pinstripes, as a lot of my ties and sweaters could go with that color combination.

Not easy in your climate but then again, any suit would be hot no ? Personally in a climate like that I would go for unstructered Naepolitan style jackets. If you stick to db suits, maybe consider linen, or one of these modern linen/wool/silk mixes in order to minimize the weight.
maybe try a linen blazer in a subdued lighter color like Grey or blue for a classic look that is still breathable in hotter climates. Notched lapels ,2 buttons with flapped pockets is in fashion and will give you the modern gentlemen look you are going for without sweating everyday
I just turned 18, & became a fan of db suits. Getting my 1st suit for weddings & farewell party as a navy blue db suit. The tailor here made the suit good but he's messing up the front 4 button placement 😂 (🇮🇳)
I have a friend in Abu Dhabi that wears all kinds of suits even three-piece. He pretty much lives in air-conditioning but another way around. It is obviously to make a liner less jacket that will help keep it as cool as possible and I’m guessing maybe some light colors would be more beneficial
I am 20 years old pursuing a bachelor's in fashion design about to enter my final year where in the last semester we are supposed to make a graduation design collection and present it on a runway where a lot of industry leaders will be present. As it will be quite a remarkable day for me, I always thought of designing something special for me to wear that day and the double breasted suit seemed to be the perfect choice. It's really a shame people aren't wearing such an elegant and masculine garment from the golden age of menswear. I hope it makes a resurgence. Always love the videos Raphael and team. Thank you for all you have contributed to the classic menswear community. Peace.
I find double breasted suits to be incredibly sexy on a man and I think more men should wear them, if they can. It's interesting to learn about the history of the double breasted suits, especially that they mostly stopped really being worn in the 1940's because of cloth rations. Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for such an informative video.
I agree! Double breasted suits enhance men like nothing else. Makes them look the right combination between solid and powerful, portly and dignified, and suave and elegant. I think it’s because of the smoothed out V shape they create and the fact that usually the double closure results in a higher closing point at the chest (except during the 80s). I find that the higher the jacket closes at the chest, the more composed and taller men look (waistcoats have a similar effect)
Im 34, I only wear Double Breasted Suits (all bespoke). I have a Charcoal Grey three piece solid, a Navy Blue Window Pane two piece, and a Light brown Prince of Whales (with light blue accents), all with jetted pockets except the POW suit. I love them so much ill put them on in my own home just because i feel like it and also to test out different combos,so no problem going in public with one.
I changed the 6/2 buttoning of my suits to a 6/3 because I love the pre-1930s look. Sure, it changes the structure to something the cut was not made for, but it works well enough.
I love wearing my Blue, Black or Gray Double-breasted suits when I go to new York City, window shopping, Restaurants or Broadway some times. It's a lot of fun and I have gotten some compliments in the way a dress too which I appreciate. I sometimes wear my 1930's style black and white spectator shoes with the suit too!😀
I found an amazing Blue Double Breasted Navy Blue Blazer with Golden Buttons at a thrift store, it is always a showstopper esp as a skinny college student. Double Breasted Suits are so underrated
I have a 1960's turnbull asser DB jacket. I replaced the buttons and it looks just as good as new. I went with gold plated ones. Now despite the fit not being as much of a X-taper as I wanted it to be, I think it works for a DB suit to be slightly fitted. It's meant to be a conservative piece, and should have conservative fits. I too love DB suits and it should be on big guys, super flatting. Flattering should be focused on the best bits about yourself, for me nice full legged trousers flatter my muscular legs.
I own, wear, and enjoy several 6/2 DB suits plus a couple of navy blazers during the late fall, winter, and early spring months. A few alterations made them fit wonderfully, and I feel like a million bucks in them..
I enjoyed this video, many thanks. I always associate double breasted suits with my great grandfather's "demob suit" - a grey flannel double breasted suit with chalk stripes. True three button suits (rather than three-roll-two) also seem to have had a similar history, experiencing surges in popularity (1960s, 1990s) then disappearing 15-20 years ago

When I was being fitted for my last mtm suit at mens wearhouse the tailor said she was seeing more men ordering double breasted suits so it may be coming back. It's my preferred style because it flattens my front but also has a older silhouette that I like.
Ironically the person who helped me with my mtm suit at men's Wearhouse tried to talk me out of double breasted for my suit, but I stuck to my guns. I ended up loving the results for my double breasted suit

Im young, tall and thin so i usually rock the double breasted jacket, it works really well for my build but i have found that's more important than on single breasted jackets that they fit well.
I far prefer DB suits. I think the reason for db suits falling out is the fact that often even in offices you see few people keeping their jackets on. So having a fancy/ dressy jacket is less important and folks just stick with whats around...and whats around is simple single breasted jackets you usually take off once you get to where you are going. Furthermore, a db suit is usually worn closed which already makes it less appealing to folks obsessed with comfort.
Yes, I have a double breasted overcoat and I find it occasionally annoying to have to remember to button the inside button when throwing on the coat to go out. But on the other hand, my SB coat feels weird because it just doesn't cover as much.
I bought a double breasted suit because of it's association with the 40s and all the fiction I like and fiction that's been inspired by it. Humphrey Bogart, Michael Corleone(yes he's a criminal and that's terrible, but he was dressed well), film noir, gangster movies, and at the risk of sounding cringe, Spike Spiegel. I hope it makes a comeback. Also you guys should do a video on Humphrey Bogart's style. Much love.
@@jackthomas6952 Yeah, I hate to admit that's part of it. But part of the reason is I'm a swarthy jew and Michael's swarthy italian so that's why I plan on buying a dark grey double breasted suit😅. I already have not just a black double breasted suit but also a three piece black suit a la the senate testimony scene.
@@danielgalil5020 Very Nice! My Newest DB Suit is a bright blue more Paulie Walnuts from Sopranos. Im also an 89 Joker Cosplayer and I’m having the purple 3 Pc double breasted suit made in the hand buzzer scene.
I’m 6’ 2 1/2” and 175 lbs., and every time I go in a store and ask about double breasted suit, the salesman says, “You’ll never pull it off. How about a nice two button single breasted suit?”
I wear a very shiny satin white 1 row button jacket. Usually with a black shirt with a silver necklace with a rather large pendant. Helps to keep the feel casual while looking exceptional.
I agree with your comments as to the demise of DB suits. Pleated trousers. Ralph Lauren Purple Label do this well. They are brilliant. What you fail to mention is the current fashion of DB Jackets for women. Purple label makes this fashion trend look fabulous.
I really appreciate the versatility of a DB suit. It’s classically elegant, and has been worn by the world’s most notorious clothes horses. Loving the “Kent” style, lately making a slow return to the scene.
Whilst patch pocket double breasted suits are a relatively modern trend, I actually own a 1930's bespoke suit, 3-piece, that has patch pockets. They certainly weren't prevalent at the time but they did exist.
Double breasted suits & odd jackets, sport coats, blazers etc with patch pockets appear fairly frequently in 1930s men's fashion advertising. Esquire, Apparel Arts and so on. I'm thinking of the warm weather/summer casual suits in particular. There's about three or four illustrations from the 30s with patch pocket DB suits in this video
Came here to say that I wore a double breasted suit yesterday! I try to rotate at least two double breasted suits into my weekly dress wear to change it up some
From what I'm seeing available off the rack the only way to get a nice double breasted with larger lapels and a healthy drape would be bespoke. I would have no idea how much that would cost or where to go though.where to go where to go
Every one of your videos teaches me something, My mother and father would have loved your channel. She was with After Six Formalwear in their glory days. It’s where I developed my interest in men’s haberdashery. I just wish more men took an interest in it. 🤭
These days every time I wear a suit I get comments from other men who almost seem offended. They seem to think that I am overdressed (even at church, weddings, and funerals!) or that I must be uncomfortable.
Im a big fan of double brested suits and waistcoats. The one blue double brested suit is a long time favoriet. The thing with slim fit suits is, that as a very slim person, it is the only option to wear and not lock like a little brother in his older brother siut, but i got your point. Greating from Germany ^^
I still make plenty. I have talked to short men, tall men, slim men and not so trim men who often thought they couldn't wear one, If you get it made bespoke and your tailor has an eye for form it will work, the button placements and nuance doesn't translate well to OTR or MTM.
I am a musician. I always dress for gigs, suits, ties, etc…, other’s are wearing cargo shorts and t shirts, sneakers with no socks. What is wrong with people?
I just bought my first double breasted suit from Mens Wear house, it’s a nice 30s styled one that is Navy with white stripes. I can’t wait to start wearing it around!
Great advice and a wealth of information. My favourite suit was a double breasted suit in Prince of Wales check with cuffs. It was one of my winter weight suits. When I changed offices to one with fewer draughts it was simply too warm.
I’m personally not that big of a fan of DB’s, but only because I really like waistcoats! Maybe I’ll get a velvet DB dinner coat though. I can take a liking to that
Iam a huge fan of DB Suits/sportcoats. I wear them all the time...Ralph Lauren makes some out of Chino-material and they go perfectly with jeans. I get compliments from guys which dont really take care of their style, that the DB-look gives every outfit this "official"/neat look - even with Jeans and plain white sneakers (I know Raphael doesnt want to hear about the Sneakers ;-) ).
I have a double breasted suit and a double breasted prince of wales jacket and I love them both. However as you mentioned, everytime I wear any of them I stand out what makes not wearing them frequently.
I usually think of Acorn's Poirot because the character Captain Hastings wore a double breasted suit all the time and it worked well for him. He'd fit will in this group.
I have a blazer that I use for formal events like weddings and such. I wear a short sleeve shirt underneath as the blazer is hides the tie bar I use. Allows me to switch to business casual quickly. I don't have a suit as use expanding waist slacks as they are more comfortable.
I would love to wear a classic british cut like double breasted suit. But as pointed out in the video the main problems I face in this matter are flattering cut designwise and fit in the RTW and MTM world in my area. I saw a rather cheap MTM double breasted suit once on me and I looked horrible in it mainly because of a bad fit. And since I seem to have a bad body for the standardized patterns in general (mainly asymmetrical square shoulders being quite wide in relation to the rest of my body) I guess having seen some MTM results now on me and double breasted suits being far more less forgiving for cut/design and fit problems I would have to go bespoke for a double breasted suit. But right now at the moment (sadly) a bespoke suit would not be the smartest investment for me. Maybe a very high advanced MTM system could also manage to get an acceptable result but I guess this would be for a price point with still some limited options where I personally would question why not go all in with bespoke and its unlimited options and being able to influence the making process instead of something where you still can only pray that it will look good on you after your measurements are taken.
Excellent video, Sven. I own both single and double breasted suits and jackets, and my style leans toward the double breasted by far. I second your reasoning for style, elegance and a uniform look. That being said, I also went them more casually using buttons and colors. I also love the Fred Astaire, Bogart, Cary Grant look to that of the single. Style is for the individual and the double breasted is mine hands down. Thanks again for an excellent and informative video.
I remember when I was in the Air Force and deployed to Turkey. I went to a shop outside of the base and had two double-breasted suites hand made. Turkish labor was cheap and you could get nearly anything custom-made. When I got back to my base in the UK, I remember hanging out in a club wearing one of my suites. Good times! I like the look and hope they one day make a return.
I didn't. I've also got a nice navy double breasted blazer too. Thankfully I have them made at a reasonable price because I live in the area where the finest fabrics are made so manage to get roll ends. I think a gentleman needs a strong figure to wear one.
I really like that navy striped Ralph Lauren suit and the brown Glenncheck one looks great as well. Personally, I think a double breasted suit would probably look like too much on me (and there's the overheating topic as well), but I might consider a dark blue double breasted blazer, possibly with patch pockets, once my trusty single breasted one has given up, which is hopefully still a bit down the road.
My interest in classic men's wear is directly inspired by my maternal grandfather, who raised me along with my mother and grandmother. An Italian-American man of very modest means, he always found a way to dress well. Any association with him is an honor.
this style is so very classic, keep it up guys. the channel for any and all men young or old to look and feel great. European men, forget the tracksuit and trainers, thats for... well, lets just say none Europeans. you/we are better than that. long live taste/class/style and long live the king! (Real Piece Of Work)
I think the future of the double-breasted suit in terms of popular fashion lies in pairing it with a turtleneck shirt, because two of my favorite looks from this video are @ 24:17 (gentleman at far left) and 26:05. Hands down, fantastic. Pairing it with a dress shirt and tie is great, of course, but it may appear too costume-y for the uninitiated to classic menswear fashion. The turtleneck combo = a more modern look. I personally have shied away from wearing the double-breasted suit due to the fact that my shoulder-to-waist ratio in relation to my height is more mesomorphic (inverted pyramid), and thus I haven't the need for what a double-breasted suit is supposed to provide a slimmer/athletic body type. Same reason I only do peak lapels on more solid-colored suits like a black tuxedo. Finally, 16:25. Huh? Can you imagine Joseph Guerney Cannon responding to the question of why he wore a seersucker to meet the President with, "climate change, bro!"? Me neither.
I remember seeing Tom Holland wear a double breasted suite to a Spider-Man premier. It looked really good, it had a very modern cut to it. I think that’s what needs done, upgrade a classic style with a modern cut.
Drake's and Pina Parma have some good looking RTW double breasted suits this year. I've noticed most places that do carry them have shortened the jackets and brought in the legs, I'm not sold on that quite yet though.
Admittedly, the first exposure I had to the double-breasted suit was Darkwing Duck. And while I have since come to see them in other sources than just the Terror that Flaps in the Night, I still have somewhat of an association between the two. Nevertheless, I have always thought they looked nice, but have never been able to find one that fit.
Interesting video. I think I've been a single-breasted suit guy for ages. I just can't get over that horrid 80's look and also the 30's gangster look. Perhaps I need to revisit with a well fitted double breasted suit. I think you almost convinced me. I think the problem is the casualization of mens wardrobes with even ties falling out of fashion. It's pretty common to see a single-breasted suit worn with a shirt without a tie these days. I'm pretty into watches and picked the Nomos Tangente. The blue dial look great. I'm a stickler for this, but I would have tried a brown strap to match the shoes, but I know that isn't a hard rule these days. Or just worn black leather shoes, that may have looked better anyway. Though navy suits and brown shoes have been in fashion for a while. Nice video and new subscriber!
I have got two double breasted suits stiched from a local tailor, one in light grey and one navy blue. Trust me, it looks so masculine. I already have broad shoulders and it looks amazing! Now im looking forward to make anothet double breasted tuxedo and one pinstripe suit.
I personally prefer Double Breasted over single breasted. I love the style, lapels, drape and feel of the suit plus I ware them over wearing a single breasted with a vest. (personal preference). I have quite a few full Double breasted suits and single jackets, I mix them up from time to time. I have noticed that the Double breasted has come back more this year than last year, interestingly I saw a DB suit at mens warehouse that I bought that have pleated pants which gave an unique looks so maybe the pleats are coming back as well? Thanks for a great informative video about Double Breasted suits!
I actually think it's starting to make a comeback, at least in the UK. I'm not saying it's super common, by any stetch of the imagination but I have seen a few younger men wearing double-breasted jackets. I actually really like them and would try one; however, they look best on larger, or well-built men and I'd be a bit concerned they wouldn't work for my body type.
I have a suit like at 18:00 but it is S150 and my taylor said it is the best fabric you can get, made in Italy. I will ask him the next time abot 250´s, but i am satisfied with S150. I also have a jacket of Tasmanian wool wich has realy a nice fabric and wearing. For me the main benefit of above S120 fabric is that the suits lose their wrinkles if you hang them outside on a damp night, of course on a appropriate coat hook.
Also, double breasted suits look rather odd if they aren’t done up. People in the city (by which I mean London) often don’t even do up jackets any more and many go for fits which they couldn’t do up - even if they wanted to. Double breasted suits won’t be making a come back for daily use as sadly the suit is dying out. Many people in the city wear more casual clothes into the office now. I normally just wear a shirt, suit trousers and oxfords, and I’m on the more formal end of people dressed in the office. Anything more would be a bit overkill and people would get the wrong impression/ think you are a bit up yourself. I only really wear jackets for social events (black ties dinners, Ascot, Henley etc.) or for job interviews now.
My favorite suit is my double breasted. It has a nice lower drape and is a 6/2 button pattern. It is very elegant and shows nicely. It always stands out whenever I wear it.
Ricardo Tubbs in Miami Vice made the double breasted jacket one of the most definite looks of the mid to late 1980s. As a collector of Vinyl records, I am all into the 80s, so I recently went back to the double breasted look. You can quite easy find them back again these days: Suitsupply and Reiss have them. But even stores like Mango and C&A offer some cheap double breasted. I even have a very cheap checkered grey double breasted jacket from asos that I quite like for the money. I think most important for a double breasted jacket, is that it has peaked lapels. Gangsters and daggers 😎
I love double breasted jackets. I only have odd jackets for now, but that's only because I'm yet to find a double breasted suit that I love. I'm a big fan of the silhouette they give off, but, just like you say in the video, they are harder to fit than single breasted ones.
I once bought a vintage double-breasted sport-coat, and brought to a tailor to have it altered to fit me better. When I got it back once he was finished I was startled to find that he had removed the double breasting!
I don't know I've always worn double breasted suits for special occasions. I was very fortunate in the '90s to buy some vintage double-breasted suits from the 1930s and over the years I've had them retailered several times. Every time I dressed up and gone out I always get compliments.😊
I wear double breasted suits deliberately to stick out from everybody else. I hope it doesn’t become mainstream again
I have seen it is becoming more mainstream little by little. Especially among celebrities

@@thechairman74 i can put up eoth the extra move..but folks today are likely too lazy.
Much love.
I don't think much people would think admiring the style of a criminal means you endorse their crimes 😂
@@vegetables1593 that’s actually part of the Allure on some level. Looking like a Stylish mobster from a bygone era.
Looks like Mr. Corleone gave you an offer you couldn't refuse, eh?
I am 6’8” and 215 lbs, double breasted 3 piece suits are the only style that make me wider and more proportioned. I hope they never die
Yet for me, 6’2” and 275 it looks terrible.
I’m 6’ 2 1/2” and 175 lbs., and every time I go in a store and ask about double breasted suit, the salesman says, “You’ll never pull it off. How about a nice two button single breasted suit?”
@@TonyfromBhamhahaha lol
I love the Brunello Cucinelli 1.5 breasted suit look...much slimmer and more elegant looking. I hope it comes back in that style.
I wear a very shiny satin white 1 row button jacket. Usually with a black shirt with a silver necklace with a rather large pendant. Helps to keep the feel casual while looking exceptional.
Well tailored DB (to a lesser extent 3pc) with a generous lapel is a godsend for those of us that are taller and slimmer.
I normally tend to wear casual... But if certain things go as I hope I may start wearing suits soon. Your videos are always teaching me a few things.
I try to rotate at least two double breasted suits into my weekly dress wear to change it up some
A double-breasted suit is my dream suit. I love the look, and I can't wait for the day I get one customed made
From what I'm seeing available off the rack the only way to get a nice double breasted with larger lapels and a healthy drape would be bespoke.

A great informative and inspiring video as expected from GG. Much love and appreciation to Rafael and team.
I love DB Suits, I had a beautiful one made recently, Full Canvas with High Rise Trousers.
I really like dbs no matter if it is just jacket or suit. I have some db suit like 4x1, 4x2 and 6x2.
What I don’t like about the double breasted suit is the wrinkles at the top button area!
Keep up the good work!❤
JIM
My first suit was a double breasted pin stripe( maybe not the best choice for a first suit) but I loved that suit.
Hallo Sven wir haben uns im Zug nach Hamburg gesehen😅 gutes Video!
Great advice and a wealth of information.
My favourite suit was a double breasted suit in Prince of Wales check with cuffs.
It was one of my winter weight suits. When I changed offices to one with fewer draughts it was simply too warm.
Personally, I like the double-breasted, it stands out great, and I feel like it compliments me very well
I’m personally not that big of a fan of DB’s, but only because I really like waistcoats! Maybe I’ll get a velvet DB dinner coat though. I can take a liking to that
I just bought a RL purple label DB suit. Pleated trousers. Love it. ❤️❤️❤️
I have 5 of them and use them regularly.
Love them! You definitely stand out in the crowd! I have a few , always pleats and always cuffs!
You gotta buy them online fellas!
Dropped this video the day I just purchased my double breasted suit from Suitsupply! Got it for my wedding day
I usually think of Acorn's Poirot because the character Captain Hastings wore a double breasted suit all the time and it worked well for him.
Thanks Most men need advice about their wardrobe. 😊
His navy blue pinstriped is majestic, where does it come from I want the same 14:56
Ralph Lauren Purple Label - you can find out more here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/what-to-buy-from-ralph-lauren/?
(Real Piece Of Work)
I love my tone on tone double breastfed suit. It does separate you from the crowd. Peaked lapel is the only way to go!!
Thanks for the information.
I have two and wear them weekly. I love the silhouette.
Grown men are seen wearing skinny pants and a sports jacket is a rare occurrence! Your very optimistic my friend with resurrection of the double
I'd appreciate a video on pocket square styles and folding
Can you elaborate on which body types should get the 4x1, 4x2, 6x1, and 6x2, please? That‘d be greatly appreciated!
IMHO, Higher waisted pants look better than the hip hugger style.
Raphael, it's nice to see you back on the channel, but I really find the collar gap distracting...
Such work put into that video. Thanks!
I feel it in my water, chaps......it's coming back....DB is gonna come back!! x

I find it funny that this video came out on the same day I wore my new double breasted suit outdoors.
I am in the middle of binge-watching Project Runway and now find myself fascinated by fashion. Cool channel!! Subbed..
Welcome!
I love double breasted jackets. I only have odd jackets for now, but that's only because I'm yet to find a double breasted suit that I love. I'm a big fan of the silhouette they give off, but, just like you say in the video, they are harder to fit than single breasted ones.
I bought a near perfect, 3 season, black, double breasted suit in the late 90s. Still wearing it.
I love double-breasted suits! I own 3 of them. I usually wear them to weddings, funerals, & church.
That Vitale Canonico suit sure looks one of a kind
Piazza Sempione would be my favorite.
