Since we got to the South of India - by definition when we started this trip in India - we were offered Pongal. And I was thinking Pongal, Pongal.... that sounds familiar... And it does. There is an important festival called Pongal. But that is not what they mean. Or maybe they do too....
Pongal (lit. 'to boil over') is a South Indian and Sri Lankan dish of rice cooked in boiling milk.[1][2] Its preparation is the main custom associated with the Pongal festival. It is also eaten as a breakfast food.[3] A part of Tamil cuisine, varieties include venn (hot) pongal, sakkarai (sweet) pongal, kozhi (chicken) pongal, and sanyasi pongal. It has been described as "very dear to (the) Tamil people."
Anyway, I did try it down in Trichy and it was unusual I must say, but how was it exactly? Let's find out by watch the full video. Of course we tried some other foods too....
Please don't skip the adds as this is what keeps us running, give the video a like and maybe even a comment if it is not too much to ask for as it then will be more present in todays youtube algorithm.

Brother, the breakfast you took is a wholesome meal. It does have carbs from rice, protein from dhals in Pongal ,Vadai, Sambar, vitamins and minerals from the vegetables and spices added in sambar and chutney, very low amount of good fat from the ghee, coconut and oil added. I am so proud and happy to see that you have enjoyed the food. All the Tamizh foods are wholesome one in whatever combination it was taken. Our foods have all the six tastes added in them also.

But this ven pongal is the normal breakfast things you can easily find anywhere around tamilnadu hotels, sweet one made of Raw Rice boiled in milk and raisins, cashewnut and cow ghee. Ven pongal made of Rawrice, Moong dal and seasoning with pepper corns, cumin seeds and curry leaves. we usually dont use cardamon in ven pongal, that is for sweet pongal

Brother , Pongal with coconut chutney or Pongal with Sambar are great combinations . You should not mix sambar and chutneys. Kara / kattu Pongal( what you ate ) and Sweet Pongal with Jaggery are healthy . Poori with curry ( Masala) will be too tasty , but in Hotels , they use dirty oil . South Indian foods are all healthy and tasty too. You can try vada dipped in a bowl of sambar along with Idly. Your feelings Shows how you enjoying Tamil foods. Don't forget to visit greatest temple RANGANATHA and ancient JAMBUKESWARA Temple at Trichy . Nearby you can visit great MEENAKSHI AMMA temple at Madurai. Lovely to see this. As a native Chennai'ite I can maybe shed some light on the Pongal with milk. Cow's milk is not a required ingredient when making it at home, especially on non-festival days but it could be a welcome addition. Mainly, it is Rice, Moong Dal, Ghee & tempered with Ginger, Peppercorns, Curry Leaves, & Cashews. The 'milky' taste that you may be getting could be from the pure cow's milk ghee that they used.
Great to see you, and especially your kids enjoying the food. Hope you got to try the sweet pongal too.

Please don't get worked up over ghee. It is heated butter! after heating butter becomes aromatic and looks like oil and can be used as a substitute for oil.
    It is very expensive, though

The banana leaf was washed with water right?? It is a practice that must be followed before food is served on the banana leaf. So whenever you get to eat food on a banana leaf, sprinkle water on the leaf and gently wipe it.

Only Sweet pongal is made with Milk, as you said Rice boiled with milk and later add jaggery. Sweet pongal is mostly made during festivals at houses in Tamilnadu. However in restaurants you get sweet pongal as morning menu.
The Savoury pongal is actually called VenPongal that is GheePongal, which made of Rice, Jeera, Ghee and moong daal.
In Tamilnadu or in South India, Breakfast will be with Sambar, Coconut chutney and also with additional chutney depending on the state where you are in.

The one u ate (salt version) as u said its normal breakfast. The one they do in pongal festival is the sweet version. So its sweet pongal made of ghee cowsmilk sugar or brownsugar and raisins, cashew nuts etc.,. No one eats sweet pongal everyday and its specifically prepared on pongal festival all over tamilnadu. The sweet version though its served in hotels as desserts and also in some temples during auspicious days for god. So cheers u ate one of the traditional breakfast with in traditional style and ur son was even more traditional I would say.
