I just used the portal the other day for the first time ever to book round trip tickets to Cancun for a family of 4. Prices were the same and it was nice to cover taxes and fees too. Combined with P2s $300 travel credit, I’m out of pocket $72. This was with the CSP. That 25% bonus helped a lot. I’m out of the sapphire 48 mos rule and have 2 chase slots left. I’m downgrading CSP next month and will apply for the CSR next year. Plz keep up with the CSR videos.
Here’s where I’m at: I think I’m finally ready for a lounge card as I have a ton of travel planned this year, and while I would love the Venture X, Capital One won’t give me one because I’m a churner. I’ve applied twice in the past 2 years and been denied both times. I’ve never been denied by any other issuer. Good credit and a clean file. They just don’t like how often I open cards. That leaves the Platinum and the Reserve, and I just don’t value things like Clear, Walmart+, etc. That makes the Reserve look quite nice to me..
I’m on the fence for this card. Im approved for CSR but also carry Venture rewards and am debating VX or CSR. I’m just a guy that wants a simple, low effort, easy to use card and the VX I like because I already get $400 in benefits off the bat every year via the travel credit and 10,000 points, so basically that pays for the card and everything else is a cherry on top. For CSR, having to transfer points to the portal, transfer out to partners, and not having some $250 value item off the bat that makes up for the delta between the annual fee and $300 credit is what’s off putting.
For my wife and myself....... CSR and the IHG personal and business. We transfer CSR points to Hyatt, and we use IHG for ALL of our hotel stays. By concentrating, we both have top elite status with IHG and continuous upgrades and benefits.
As a CSR holder myself, I felt I had to add a few things after watching this. I definitely understand what you're getting at here, and I do agree to a certain extent. For people who don't want to complicate things, and want easy value for their points, the CSR 1.5x through the portal is great. However, one thing that you forgot to mention is that Chase often marks up the price through the portal and booking through the hotel or expedia is often cheaper. Second, and on the topic of Hyatt losing value I think you missed a key point here. Like everything in the points game, there is nuance, and theres good and bad redemptions in every program. Hyatt points don't shine in cities where hotels are cheap. The nature of the fixed award pricing means they are best leveraged in expensive cities and destinations. A category 6 hotel in Morocco is going to be a lot cheaper than a category 6 hotel in Tokyo. Your hotel in Morocco was 110,000 points but only $1,500 which, I agree, is poor value. If, however, you look at the Andaz Tokyo or Grand Hyatt tokyo where a 5 night stay costs $3-$4k or 150,000 points, then the value is exceptional.
I totally agree. I use the CSR exclusively as my hotel/transit card. Current setup- AMEX Plat, AMEX Gold, BBP, CSR I’m a fan of AMEX and needed a non AMEX card in my setup so I decided to go with the best card in my opinion that also covers categories I don’t currently have
I have a similar setup. The Amex trifecta (G, P, BBP) and the IHG business card. I really want the CSR, but it needs to make sense. Do you think the Chase Sapphire Reserve slots in well with the Amex Trifecta? I just wish there was a little more credit available to make the card make sense. $250 ($550 AF-$300 credit) is hard to overcome since the food perk overlaps with my Gold card’s spending categories. Thoughts?
@@DecayedMushroom the CSR makes since in my situation. I spend 9 months a year outside of America for work and 5 of those months are spent inside of hotels. The CSR is great when Amex isn’t accepted plus I get access to the Chase lounge and the added Air Canada lounges. For me my math is $1,667 per year in hotels through the portal which is easily doable for me. That’s not including me using the card for food when the gold isn’t accepted $550- $300=$250.00 $250= 16,667 points (1.5 cents/point) 16,667 points = $1,667 hotels purchased @ 10x I book through the portal because most hotels I stay at are local and aren’t part of a big chain. Plus my company reimburses me
CSR works for me and my family but I can see how it doesn’t for others. We enjoy the portal for car rentals if we’re going to use the portal. Prices have always been similar to booking direct and we’ve never had any issues. I think people just echo “never book in the portal” without doing their own research cause as always YMMV
At this point, I'm still shocked that ORD hasn't been tapped by one of the banks for an official lounge. I think a Sapphire or Capital lounge would be a great get for the airport.
Realistically, everyone holds some form of the Chase Trifecta, so the comparison is CSR vs CSP vs CIP. And the CSR gives Sapphire and AC lounge access, which can't be found on the other two. If you value lounge access and aren't in UR, your only other option is the Ritz Carlton (which itself is onky for Marriott enthusiasts). What would be a game changer is a Chase Ink Reserve with office supply store credits instead of DD.
Another hotel benefit....CSR is a Visa Infinite card, so you have access to the Visa Infinite hotel collection...doesn't help with points booking, but has its own set of benefits like the edit and FHR
Chase travel portal makes sense sometimes. I do always see higher costs but if you value UR points at 1.5c/point it could make sense. Mostly have used it for lower end properties. My one annoyance is that even tho the Chase portal lets you put in your hotel membership number when booking hotel properties, it’s never worked for me in the times I’ve done it. When I’ve checked in the hotel staff don’t see my membership number so not sure why that box is there in the portal?
Luke, thank you for the review based on this card alone. So many of the others look at it from the perspective of already having the Platinum or Venture X, and then just talking about the overlap. For me, the choice was which one of the Big 3 would be best and the CSR was the clear winner. I had the Platinum and found it just wasn't taken in enough overseas locations. When I looked at the no-brainer $300 yearly statement credit, the excellent primary CDW, purchase protection, travel protections (delays, lost baggage, etc.), Chase lounges (I fly mainly out of Boston) and UR point trifecta set-up, it was an easy choice for my situation. I do think they could tweak their benefits to really set themselves apart, but it does what I need.
