Suisei pretty much found the perfect balance for a singing Vtuber. Her Music is pretty much front and center of her activities, which results in her huge success and reach. On the other hand, she doesn't neglect her other activities to keep growing and retaining her fanbase. She has signature games (Tetris, mario kart), memes (Senkou, psycopath), and brand power (Merch keeps selling out, connections to music producers and programs). All of this and she somehow keeps a somewhat healthy relationship with her fanbase. Some people might think that all you need to do is sing as a vsinger, but that's just not true. Unless you are backed by a top label, you'll need to create your own branding and audience. Otherwise, you will always be a hidden gem. A good recent example would be Azki, where she found success in her GeoGuessr streams. Hopefully, it converts to even more success for her music as well.
See, occasional genuine commentary like this from her is why she is my favorite Vtuber/Vsinger for a long time even though she wasn't my first exposure to the culture While objectively few technical aspects of her singing could be polished more (like her landing from high note), she never forget to insert some feeling/emotion at the right moments to create impact while not being restricted by "rules" Not to mention she did all of that by instinct which is amazing by itself
Suichan being humble but she's right that the level where vsingers are at is very high. Some might be more talented than her but no one comes close to her level of versatility. That's including utaites and even goes into the level of pros.
Guys this is only something that can be said by someone truly talented who loved and in return is loved by music. "I lived among music for as long as I can remember"
If i remb correctly she also audition for alot of places related to entertainment and music. But always failed at the last moment since they thought she's too wide spread in term of skills set since she knows alot of things other than music. So, she's very lucky indeed that yagoo saw her potential and took her in.
Yeah, there many vtubers out there I could say are better singers than Sui-chan, but I like Sui-chan voice the most and her songs are my cup of tea. I actually don't like most of the j-rock or pop because it's too commercial for my taste, but after listening to NEXT PLANET COLOR I knew I had found someone special. Also many songs in her new album are so good. It took me by surprise the awesome quality of SPECTER. Many thanks to Yuna, because of her clips (and may other clippers) I can learn more about her and her journey.
Mind sharing some names? Especially female vsinges and outside of holo/niji. Only ones I know and consider to be on par/above Suichan right now is MiCosmic Baby and Ashizawa Saki, and the latter is sadly gone already...
Raw voice probably yes. But performance experience and skill is entirely different than just raw voice. Being featured on The First Take is a proof of that. I consider risu has better raw voice, as other holomems had also said before. But performance wise suisei and irys deffinitely beats risu in consistency.
The discovery thing is huge for any musician out there, just being good isn't enough anymore to make it because there are so many people who have made it that are already established talents that many won't bother to check out someone new, especially if they're small and unheard of. What makes or breaks a career for new musicians is often just a string of lucky coincidences, which is kind of why you get people in the pop charts blowing up despite being fairly replaceable, they just happen to get picked up by the right people. This doesn't mean that everyone at the top is washed up of course, some people do make it because they're insanely talented, but there's also a ton of people who never make it *despite* having the talent and dedication to make it if they just got their chance.
im so amazed that even though she is so talented, she is still so humble (not a modest humility but actually humble) and so down-to-earth/reality. she's doesn't put herself down yet acknowledges all the talented and undiscovered people out there. it wouldn't be a big deal for an average joe like me to say something like this but someone as big as Susei saying it hits harder.
Suisei so humble, but is correct that it's all about opportunity and discovery. Suisei is my favourite holo singer, Enna is my fav nijisanji singer and Quon Tama is my fav indie singer.
Sui-chan is not the best singer. No one is. No one is perfect. There is always a give and take. You may be better at one thing while another person is better at another. Like I recall Sui-chan admitting she wasn't good at hitting very low notes (tho I believe she has improved). But her range (singing in multiple genres), control, and ability to put emotion into her singing is superb, making her one of the most talented. There are also differences in voice, as Sui-chan I think described hers as being husky and deep. While folks like Azki and Watame are more light and gentle. So it's also up to vocal preference. Which is fun, as you can change it up sometimes and enjoy other vocal styles. But the thing that makes Suisei so successful is her whole package and not just the singing alone (personality, Tetris, charisma, Mario Kart, etc). And her hard work and drive to always change the status quo and constantly create opportunities for herself. Luck plays a part but luck does not happen if you just sit there and not go out to create those chances.
Deep voice always have better chance to have success cause they are more appreciated (take Ado for example) it also help giving emotion to the song. For female singer, having a deep and low voice is always an advantage. Of course, you can't limit success just to that, Suisei is far more, and that's why she's on the top of Vsinger. And in addiion having something unique/special in your voice help too.
the question should be "when did you start singing with going pro in mind?" or something similar since you know there are a reason why karaoke is so popular in japan.
- she has talent and inclination for music but only regard it as hobby. No formal training. Only karaoke marathon. Rely on artistic instinct. - change of mindset only after joining INNK - honestly, around early 2020 her vocal is not that good. She has distinct voice but it was rough. In Hololive 1st fest, tenkyuu, her live performance is good enough, but people still can point out flaws. Fast forward to January 2023,the first take. No apparent flaw. What is scary is her growth. This is still not her final form?? - other vtubers may have better voice, better skill, there are lots of vtubers with great singing skills. Still, if we count how many can potentially get invited to TFT, the number shrink down to only a few. They need to have certain recognition and popularity. They need to have original songs. They need to have some experience in live singing so TFT would trust that you won't screw up that bad. They need to have 3d model. A big plus if they have skill to play instrument, or resources to have band playing. Another plus if they make special arrangements of the song for TFT version. The other vtubers that came to mind that fulfill those criteria, are Tokino Sora, Inui Touko, Azki, KAF.
There's plenty more vsinger artist of her caliber actually if you look around some I would really vouch in is (current) Cocoa Domyoji and Suzuna Nagihara from RIOT Music Then there is Harusaruhi and RIM from Kamitsubaki Studio (same agency with KAF) Even from Hololive I think a lot of people, especially kaigainiki, not exposed to Shion or Laplus amazing voice There's also a highly underrated hidden gem like Shishigami Leona and Kyo Hanabasami from Re:AcT Lets not forget some love for Fuji Aoi and YuNi who is riding on the first waves of Vsinger
her mum probably play sentimental rock music when she's in the tummy.. such genius 6:13 this is why i click on indie when they do karaoke and found quite a few
It's incredibly hard to make a name for yourself on talent alone, whatever it may be. There are so many talented individuals out there just don't get that kind of recognition simply because they are doing everything on their own, much like Suisei was doing at the start of her v-tubing career. Having a platform to elevate your work is such a boon, and Suisei doesn't downplay it at all.
My feeling is that with music, or really any art, there is no "best" because it's way too subjective. It's what voice speaks to you. What's pleasing to my ears may not be pleasing to someone else. And ever since I first heard her I have preferred listening to her sing over just about anyone (not just vtubers). singers and vsingers that I get told are better that I just don't enjoy listening to as much. so to me wouldn't that be "best" or among them, at least for me?
From what I understand she was rejected by a lot of places she applied to. I imagine she knows a thing or two about being good, just not being discovered.
Something important about being a famous singer is having a unique voice, not just being the best singer (like Alice Cooper mostly gets by on being unique lol). I think Suisei is an amazing singer, but I also think that her voice is very recognisable, and her personality shines through.
I think the issue is that the interviewers / interviewers are more used to asking those questions to mainstream singers or idols, those who tend to have certain background and education in music. VTubers tend to come from much more mundane origin, normal people so to speak. Suisei while she stood out among them for her musical prowess, was no exception to that. She grow up in a normal household, go to a normal school and her singing skill were mostly self-taught. That's why she struggles with those kind of question. Frankly speaking, she has no specific time where she starts "learning to sing", she simply love to sing since childhood, there's really no story to tell.
2:00 I think it's supposed to be : that feeling And perfunctory is defined as - (of an action) carried out without real interest, feeling, or effort. (For anyone as dumb as me)
I feel like that last point applies to Gura. If you listen to her covers, they're insane, not just because of her vocals but her techniques and pitch accuracy (I'm convinced she has perfect pitch). She listens to a song and immediately makes it her own in a creative way. Unfortunately, she doesn't feel like the type to push hard for a music career. I think if an agency doesn't reach out to her, she'll probably never do anything strictly music related.
Even in hololive she is second to risu in term of best singer but she succesfully build her brand to be this big she know she cant achieve success not by her voice only
Honestly for me Suisei overrated, there is so many clip reporting like how good her voice, she's singing good, yes she is good we knows, but the news just overhyped, there is many vtuber & vsinger who can singing better than suisei but they are unlucky because not exposed because they are not joining Big company like COVER who Ez promoted anyone they re like
I mean, isn't that exactly what she's discussing about here? If that's what you think about her singing then that's a perfectly valid opinion to have. However, it's not only because she's with COVER that she's this successful. She has a lot of important qualities beyond just singing. She has very good networking and marketing skills, a very upfront yet humble personality, and the drive to take on any work and challenges coming her way to further her success. It's not like she's always been with Hololive, as she was relatively successful during her time as an indie and had to waste months at INNK. Even then, I think a good number of producers (Like Ayase, InoTaku, NioP, and Nanou) confessed that they wanted to produce a song for her after hearing her cover their own songs. She definitely deserves her success, but if you think that other Vsingers deserve even more than that's great!

exactly the truth!

Suisei should counter the question with a "how many breads have you eaten in your life?"
"13 times. I usually eat japanese food"
From what I understand she was rejected by a lot of places she applied to. I imagine she knows a thing or two about being good, just not being discovered.

Many Vtuber are better singers than Suisei but most of them feel content as small indie or even give up to join up a big company.
