  • In 2018-19, I had the most crazy experience of my life! I crossed the ocean and experienced life as a Belgian exchange student in the United States. Living in a totally new environment and family was definitely a big adjustment! I joined marching band, ate a LOT OF fastfood and last but not least… I WAS A CHEERLEADER!
Peeps, go on an exchange if you can, you won't regret it!

You were at a small town. I hope that really worked out for you. Some "big city" kids move into small towns in the USA and they really hate it, because it doesn't match up to their dream of America. But it seems like you jumped in with both feet, which is the right thing to do, because in the small town the people make all their own fun and much more than the big city, they will care.
Thank you for show casing us as we want to be seen. I hope you had a good time. God Bless.

Hi Matthew & The Real TK-Dragon! Thanks for your comments. I was in a very small town 45 minutes away from Richmond. I arrived in the airport of Richmond and came there on Sundays to go to church with my hostfamily. My school itself had around 1,200 students (I think) and had many extracurricular activities, which I loved so much! I'm very thankful I got to do things like cheerleading, going to football/basketball games, joining the marching band and just living an American lifestyle cause it made me experience the dreamy but real American things. I always tell other exchange students to not have any expectations cause they might have other chances that dont fit in their 'dream'. I just learned that not the place, but the people make the exchange and I couldnt have had a better experience in my small town in the outbacks 😊

I understand that your parents are worried, mine were mostly about the fact that I would go to the unknown. I really showed them how much I wanted it, took them to info moments, let them talk to former exchange students (which helped a lot!). Tell them that everywhere and anytime things can happen to you in life and you need to be careful everyday in general, but that shouldn't take a possible life changing experience away. Also choose an organization that has good reviews and you trust. I have been close to guns, but have never at any moment felt unsafe. My host parents were also very protective. I hope this helps! Inform them about this unknown thing you ask them

Im american, and guns (if your family owns some) are always kept in your house usually in a safe, and only taken out to go hunting. You should watch "The deer hunter", thats what i mean by hunting, like in the forest for animals. Very rarely will you ever see someone holding there guns randomly out in public, ive only ever seen the police do that (which is normal). Also, a huge amount of families dont even own guns, most places you need a permit im pretty sure. Hopefully you get to come one day!
