It is smart sticking to your trip plan. I got lost once with friend in my 20's and we ended up following a creek bed for miles to find a road. We kept thinking, no one would find us since we never told anyone where we were going. Having that connection with civilization is comforting.
Good to see your back hitting the trails again. I keep forgetting how cool & colorful this time of year is in the northern climes. Been in the SW longer than I thought. We're just now getting down in the 60's at night. Today a blue norther blew through. It was 80 then down to 50 in less than an hour. Hope the knee get's better. Thanks for taking us along.
Ahhh, a new Shug video. Just got back from a long day at work. There's nothing (aside from getting out to the woods myself) better for the soul than a Shug vid! WHOOOOOO BUDDY!
Alway joyfull & never down in the mouth! The last one I was on my bad ankle really had me hobblin' around. I was hiking a riverbed with water shoes & really relied on my hiking pole. Still great to be outdoors, thankful for ibuprofien in the ol' first aid pouch : ) Watched this one with my new baby boy! He loved it!
Good to see you back on the trails Shug! I missed ya! Also thanks for keepin' it real! It's pretty easy to get turned around in the bush, and a lot of videos don't really ever show anyone experiencing that (with a twisted knee to boot)...on to part two!
Hi Ya Shug,it's great to see you on the trails again, hope your knee is ok,and staying with the plan you left with your wife was a great idea,I'm getting back to the trails as well, this summer had been "HOT",have a great weekend buddy, Donald
I'm still amazed that Shug still responds to every comment no matter how insignificant. I freakin' love you Shug! You're imbued with so much positivity.
Thank You for your trips that you take us along on. I've been waiting on another video to come up. Of all the videos on youtube, your's are the best. And take care of that knee. Please bring us more videos. Thanks for the good times.
Nice to see you out and about, you deserve it. Sorry about your knee but I'm glad it is ok now. I enjoyed the video and how you kept your cool and spirit up. Take care and see ya soon.
Snowbank, snowball, 's no joke :-) Hope that wounded knee of yours holds out. Great to see you back on the trail Shug. I look forward to more from this trip.
It's really good your back. My son and I love these videos. He's three and calls you uncle Shug. Hope the knee starts to feel better. Thanks for everything. Mikeinajeep.
Hey Shug, happy to see your upload !! and that your back on the trail. I really hope your knee gets better. I'm going through something simular with my achelles tendon, look forward to your next vid!! Thanks for sharing
Nice to see you again Shuge. Man that trail looks confusing! Im going to the gorge next weekend to stare at the trees man its beautiful this time of year!
Great video, I have been looking forward to you back on the trail. That looks kinda like some of the trails here in Arkansas, being rough rocky trails. Hope your knee gets better, I'll be looking for more awesome videos. Thanks
Great to see you out in the Boundary Waters Shug. I was up there doing a canoe trip the last week of Sept. and it was gorgeous. Sorry about your knee... those rocky trails make ya look down a lot while you walk don't they? Can't wait for more.
Shug me too... And I went on a trip on last Friday night... Did the coffee in my dream hammock in the morning hiked about 10 miles... And I sure did enjoy that cup of Joe in my hammock... Thanks~
Boy howdy, as an older hiker I know what it means to hike in pain. Good job, man. Also, thanks in big part to you, I've joined the Hammock Forums and ordered a WBBB and Yeti. Thanks, Shug!
Done that many a time Shug getting lost especially when you get confused with a fire break and a path. Had to push the learning curve and get my head round sat nav map technology. Looking forward to your next instalment . All the best from Greg from Scotland.
Yeah I feel ya! I know what it is to think you're on the right path and be wrong and have to backtrack... A lot! I loved the colors and the adventure! I hope that 6 years later, your knee is healed, buddy! ;)
ohh man, what a frustrating start to your trip! Glad you made it back safely, getting ready to view Part 2. btw, just watched The Grey, which altered my response to seeing wolf poo on the trail. . . .
My folks would feel right at home on the banks of Disappointed Parent Lake. Sorry for your knee. I just twisted my bad knee yesterday and it is twice it's normal size. When I hobble along it is not so much walking as a really slow forward convulsion. Fun for the whole family.
Wow.. those colors are truly amazing! I am not proud to admit this.. but I haven't been out much lately. =/ I hope your knee is already.. walking around in discomfort is not nice.
Haha, I am in the southeast mountains and there are no flat areas here :) Where we were, going south would have meant climbing back over the mountain only to find cliff faces. I knew this creek, that I later found was called Mike's Creek, led down to what is called Suck Creek which runs into the Tennessee River. It took about 7 hours to climb down this creek bed that had boulders big as cars that we had to climb over. It was not fun :)
Shug, Cliff Jacobson talks specifically about this trail and this area in his wilderness navigation book so i guess your experience here is pretty typical! Thanks for the videos
Blueberry cheddar cheese? It can only be good :) Beautiful country for sure. And those colors, magnificent! Looking forward to the next one. Btw,wasn't that Curtis we heard in there? :)
Can't wait to see how this one turns out. Will Shug be able to finish his trip, or will he be on a slow march home? Tune in tomorrow to find out. Hope the knees okay Shug.
Awesome video shug glad to see you out. It's also to see some of the people subscribed to you are people I'm subscribed to. RitchiePowell One of the first people I subbed to cause of all the ray mears videos he had and ausurvival she makes awesome videos
I know this is an older video now, but it's neat to see kek trail! I did trail work on the kek with the Scouts clearing blowdown and brush back in 2009.
Sorry to hear about the knee. They are buggers when they dont wanna play nice. My right gives me jip sometimes. I looked up the area on google maps and found it. You should have gone to Smitty’s On Snowbank and really relaxed.... :-)
what a fun video. Ive been on that trail many times and the view and tarrain can mix you up. Just a warning to new comers take a compass and stay on the trail. Also a day pack set for an emergency over nite if you do get lost.
Shug. I've been so inspired by your video's that I've gone out (into familiar woods mind you) to do a couple solo treks. I get to my location, make camp, eat and then sit and wait. Then as dusk rolls in I start second guessing myself. Then I talk myself out of facing the darkness. I hump it back to my car and head for familiar campground to spend my night. Any suggestions as how not to get psyched out as dark approaches.?
Since this is posted on RUclips I take it you made it out. :D Seeing this vid brings up a question from a hiking noob, what steps do you take to plan and map out your trip? As usual great vid, can't wait to see the next installment.
Really good color showing up in the woods. I'm looking forward to seeing the hang during the first night. Did you stay out the planned number of nights or did you end up coming off the trail early ??
i got lost on the AT for about 2 hours but that's all it takes to start to feel the fear, i guess you gotta tuck it in and follow your instincts, which eventually for me led to a toothless man and a can of soda
Have you ever hiked abroad, Shug? Maybe a video about where you'd like to hike but you haven't yet? (i've looked at my settings btw, you should be able to reply to this one!)
again, watching these 3 vids in reverse order, so i'll "p.s." by asking how the knee is now that you're off the trail? (both my 53 year old knees have the same problem)
It is smart sticking to your trip plan. I got lost once with friend in my 20's and we ended up following a creek bed for miles to find a road. We kept thinking, no one would find us since we never told anyone where we were going. Having that connection with civilization is comforting.
Hey, Shug. I prayed for a quick and complete healing of your knee. That is beautiful country. Can't wait to see the rest. God bless. John
Nice fall colors on the snowbriar trail. :) Thanks for taking us along Shug.
I'm envious every time I watch your videos but I find they always make me get out and do something. Excellent work Shug man!

Good to see you back on the trails Shug! I missed ya!

You are fun to watch get lost in the woods. I have to see more. Was it snowball, or snowflake, or what?
Wow, america looks like so much fun, you have everything! Modern cities, vast open natural spaces and good weather. The UK sucks...
great vid brother, lots of good info.
Good thing about being up in the northern usa Tony...if your lost...head south and you will eventually hit a road or house sooner or later.
Excellent style of film making. Some good ideas.
Sorry to hear about the knee. They are buggers when they dont wanna play nice. My right gives me jip sometimes. I looked up the area on google maps and found it. You should have gone to Smitty’s On Snowbank and really relaxed.... :-)
Hope there's a part 2 to see how it all turns out.
another great video, thank you! Curious what bluegrass band you always put in your vids? Love the song that opens this vid up...
Wooo! Can't wait to see the rest!!
what a fun video. Ive been on that trail many times and the view and tarrain can mix you up. Just a warning to new comers take a compass and stay on the trail. Also a day pack set for an emergency over nite if you do get lost.
Mitch Lukasavage Truth on that!
Shug's back in the woods, that's good news.

You guys sound real good! Anywhere to download it?
was expecting this to be a father and daughter outing. will keep my fingers crossed....lol.."wink"
Shug, teach me the ways of kickin back. I'm underemployed in the twin cities, dreaming of the north shore again and in the mood for some good karma.
Really good color showing up in the woods. I'm looking forward to seeing the hang during the first night. Did you stay out the planned number of nights or did you end up coming off the trail early ??
HAHA thats funny thats exactly where I am... in a hotel with the A/C blowin!... Wanna be in the woods!
Hi Rob!
Oh yes, Shug is a Legend. :-)
i got lost on the AT for about 2 hours but that's all it takes to start to feel the fear, i guess you gotta tuck it in and follow your instincts, which eventually for me led to a toothless man and a can of soda
cool one man
Oh noes! Shug lost in the woods.... What will we do? Oh ya, wait for the next episode! :-))
this trail series should prove entertaining. :-) i hope it doesn't end with a sar team... what a cliff hanger... lacking a hang.
Snowbank trail as rough as some of the gorge trails?
Have you ever hiked abroad, Shug? Maybe a video about where you'd like to hike but you haven't yet?
(i've looked at my settings btw, you should be able to reply to this one!)
is that a bark river strapped to the pack strap?
I have back tracked ....yes ...a compass is a must have.....
Hee hee hee.....it's a trail...it's gotta go somewhere...who only knows where...i've been down THAT trail before...
Snowman it is then. I need a Shug hat where can a trail hikin', homemade gear makin', clown shoe wearin' guy like myself get one of those sweet hats?
again, watching these 3 vids in reverse order, so i'll "p.s." by asking how the knee is now that you're off the trail? (both my 53 year old knees have the same problem)
Hah salami and blueberry cheese-sounds fantastic.
What are the brown pants you wear in this video? I need a good pair of hiking pants.
Too many comments already too say sumpin cool...you betcha! NiCe CoLoRs out there shug!
