Brody Cates same! it's terrible when that happens

Brody Cates I struggle with the same issue. I find blowing more air into the flute helps a lot. When I’m nervous I don’t blow as much air as I normally do in practice. If you think you’re blowing harder, you’re actually blowing the same amount of air you’re blowing in practice, which helps stabilizing the tone. I HATE the lips vibrato.

This video hit the nail on the head for me. I attempted to practice one day when I was tired because I felt like I had to and needless to say the practice session went terribly lol. Once I got some rest and came back everything went more smoothly. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

My lips tremble when I'm nervous and playing in front of someone, like when I had to play for solo festival. It's not as bad as last year, but it still happens.

Long answer, but it should be useful to you:
Experience will help tremendously, of course, but you can help yourself in various ways.
For a first example, this might sound silly, at first, but give it a try: When in front of an audience of any size, try to imagine playing to each person as an individual, the only one listening, not a big group of people. One-to-one is much less intimidating, so you can even imagine that you are playing especially for the one person you feel safest with. I'm not a flautist, but that technique works for all sorts of public performances, whether you're an instrumentalist, a speaker, or performing some other function.
A second thing which also helps me, and many others, is to have a bigger audience. It's a psychological thing, of course, but an audience of 300 is easier than an audience of 30, and 30 is easier than 3, because it's less personal in a bigger group. They're usually there to enjoy your performance, not to criticise, or comment about you, so the more people there are, the less likely they are to intervene, _because they're more scared to stand out than you are!_ They don't want to interrupt the enjoyment of the other 299, or even 29, people.
Long answer, but it should be useful to you:

It's a psychological thing, of course, but an audience of 300 is easier than an audience of 30 (and 30 is easier than 3), because it's less personal. People are usually there to enjoy your performance, not to criticise, or comment about you (your music teacher is the only one who is given that task), so the more people there are, the less likely they are to intervene, _because they're more scared to stand out than you are!_ They don't want to interrupt the enjoyment of the other people, because they don't want to be told off for doing that.
If you're a bit scared, this third thing is very useful to know. Fear and nerves are caused by a flood of adrenaline. _But that adrenaline is exactly the same hormone as the adrenalin which floods around your body when you are excited._ So turn your mind around; when you're feeling fearful, think of it as excitement. The nerves will melt away, with practice.
And the most important thing, which many people forget about. Call it the 'zeroth' thing, rather than the fourth: If you practice regularly, well, and often enough, so that you know the music without thinking about playing it, then you will be far less nervous, and that lip will tremble far less. A guaranteed way to be nervous and quivery is to fail to practice, properly, and to leave the performance pieces until the last opportunity. That puts you under pressure, even when you think you know the music without practicing. Competitors, job candidates, and students for music exams will all tell you that they make good of a practice room, if there is one. If not, then they find a suitable place to do it. They often rehearse right up to a few minutes before going out in front of the audience.
All the best for your musical future!

You should do a review on piccolos from amazon vs your piccolo. I’m wanting to get a decent piccolo for a cheap price although I use a school piccolo for marching band they have seen better days.

I am getting back into the Flute, after 30 years of not playing it.
    (I stopped after high school.)
I dare say I have to redevelop the muscles for the embouchure.
    (Plus I have Fibromyalgia)
    I just need time, right?

You have my empathy. FM is a real show-stopper. It has afflicted me for more than 10 years. Concentration is a real challenge, but stick with the flute practice; it's worth the effort, and doing something productive and not too strenuous really does alleviate the symptoms.

    HELP!
My C key is acting up I’ve tried the dollar trick but it just isn’t making a difference! When I press down on it it slowly rises back up instead of regular bouncing back up! What can I do?

    • @flutechannel
      @flutechannel  5 лет назад +2

I would advise not to don't use the dollar trick again. Butcheck the screw the the top of the post and see if its loose. I would very gently tighten it. Also it could be the spring right under the c key. It might need re-tensioning by a technician. What flute do you have?
