- One of the hardest things to do on any instrument is to stay in TUNE! So today we talk about 3 ways you can stay in tune when playing your instrument. These principles can be used for any wind instrument so I encourage you to give it a try. I tell you my secrets in this video on how to learn what to listen to when playing and to get a great and in tune flute sound. These tips can help beginner flute players all the way to pro. I have been working on getting more fluent in the 3rd octave, but have been bothered by not being able to play all the notes in tune. This should help me to be able to improve. Thank you.

My problem is I keep splitting notes like 2nd octave G/E/F# I might play them fine for half a piece and then 'bang' it will come out a whole octave lower, hollow and flat... I swear I don't feel as if I have done anything differently. Any ideas?
Well, I am having the same problem sometimes in my end blown flute and I have a theory. It is possible to make all of these sounds in the same position, because it is all about the vibration mode. So we just initiate the certain vibrational mode when we play different octaves. Since it is easier to initiate lower frequencies (I don't know why exactly) the minimal error in our initial position, say it is a disturbance in the air flow or a minor flick of lips, initiate the lower octave vibration so it continues as lower octave.
Any tips to stay in tune in a loud session ?
Some people have clip on tuners that give them a better understanding on your tuning with a big group. Private practice wise, I would try practicing with drones ( search drones for musician practice ) or practice with other players if you have that luxury. These things will help your ear develop and understand tuning with yourself and others. This could be a start.
Thanks :) yeah I join Irish session every 2 weeks but have a tendency to overblow because of loudness and be too sharp.
Would you please recommend a good, moderately priced, tuner? I do not have a great deal of money but I would like to purchase a tuner.
sure, if you have a smartphone you can get free ones. but if you want an analog one like mine the KORG OT120 its around 80$ but theres a cheaper option and its the KORG CA-2 does the same thing.
Korg has several, very low priced. Snark has one with a microphone, $13 dollar a clip on will not work with a flute, I believe.

This is a very valuable subject, and practice exercise. So many players do not recognize that the tempered scale, from which a 440 is one note, is essential to playing in tune. They follow the philosophy of "I'm OK, you're OK" tuning- they are tuned somewhere other than 440, and it goes unchallenged by their fellow players.
I’m wondering do get your tune perfectly you would need to do these exercises over a long period of time??

Cependant je pense que pour faire un forte à la flûte il vaut mieux relâcher les lèvres afin de baisser la vitesse de l'air et donc que l'intonation ne monte pas trop plutôt que de baisser le menton, ce qui impacte la qualité sonore

i generally play sharp, and my teacher says you need to blow hardly, i want full tone. and i think it makes my tone sharper but full, i can't do it in the right place when my tone is full and bright. can you help me? (and also teacher says it's your flute's tonation, when we play together, we will control the flute from the embouchure, pulling back and forth.)
