fatal con: if the cover side tracks are hidden inside the pool, under the coping, all leaves and debris are trapped (will also stick to the cover if it rains). it is DIFFICULT to remove that debris and significant portion of that debris will fall into the pool as the cover is opened. if the cover tracks are on top of the coping, it is possible to blow debris off the cover before opening. NO MATTER WHAT, a significant time loss is removing the debris before you can open the cover. you don't want that debris rolled up upon AND you don't want it in the water. if you don't know this then you've *never owned an automatic pool cover*. i've had both types and it is far easier to open the cover quickly if the cover tracks are on top of the coping. the trouble is that top of the coping doesn't look very good (open or closed) because there will be a very visible tracks to stub your toes upon. also you do NOT want an automatic hidden track in a freezing climate: keeping water off the cover becomes a nightmare - the surface pumps are ruined by freezing. also you need to mention that cover surface pumps are required to prevent damage and the water must be pumped off the cover before the cover opened or damage is possible.
Great video! I have watched all your videos to help me decide on the new pool for my house. Cost is accurate , mine came in at $12 k for a small fiberglass pool in California (12 x 26 rectangle-7600 gallons) they don’t get much smaller. They heat up fast with a 400,000 btu heater ( 1 degree every 15 minutes) and the cover traps it in. With backyards so small, the cover was the way to go to avoid a security fence.
im from socal and we are having a pool built 14x24 r ours was around the same price. I didn't want a fence because 4yr old has been climbing them since he was 3. This way I know for sure ill keep him out as long as I close the cover. For that extra peace of mind the cover will be worth the cost.

BUT, my pool temp DROPS a good 10 degrees every time it RAINS, and that’s almost a DAILY occurrence here in FL in the summer months, AND it takes another FULL DAY of sunshine to warm back up!!😕 I’m debating on whether or not to invest in a gas pool heater!!
@@beachgirl4truth672 I've since discovered the insane heart preservation of solar covers. They aren't related to the sun, but instead keeping heat in at night and a good bit when it rains. You can put one huge one on a cranks, but I cut mine into 3 big pieces. In terms of a heater, the heat pumps can't bring the temp up crazy fast like a gas heater, but they are essentially air-conditioners in reverse and use electricity. Cheaper than burning all that gas. You can even use excess heat from your house ac to heat your pool. More details if you want.
Robert, I have a coverstar automatic pool cover with a saltwater pool, one year in and I don’t see any corrosion on the parts( most parts do not come in contact with the water) the cover is still in great shape.
A pool enclosure is far superior to a pool cover in every way. If you have a pool heater and pool enclosure, together they will literally extend your season to at least 6 months, and more like 8 months, in all but the coldest climates. You will still need some sort of cover to keep evaporation and the heat in the pool. Get one of those plug in solar cover reels, which is enough for the job, and at around $1K, far cheaper than a full automatic cover. Now an enclosure will run you probably $40K to $50K, but if you can afford it, get it.

The ONLY reason I cover my pool is to keep the water warm. I live in FL, and every time it RAINS, which is almost every day in the summer, my pool temp DROPS about 10 degrees & it takes a whole DAY of sun to warm back up!! Seems it would be much less expensive to buy a gas heater and just pay a monthly gas bill!!

How can I clean limescale off the slatted cover?
Can a traditional automatic pool cover be used with a salt water pool or would there be problems with corrosion of components?

Coverstar is stainless steel so you wont see near as much corrosion as you would with other systems.
I have had an Automatic Pool Cover for 7 years on a saltwater pool. Zero corrosion.
