Some people say that little nightmares one is an allegory for child abuse, how trauma can turn children into the monsters that made them. How the maw is an orphanage and such as well.

I was thinking that, or that the eye could be the fear of feeling like everyone's watching you, that you constantly have to do your best because you don't wanna let down the expectations of how others see you. Japanese culture is very big on respect and social acceptance, for example in schools most kids are expected to look the same (dress code and hairstyles have to be a certain way) and that goes all the way up to job hunting. Growing up in japan, kids are constantly expected to be good kids and not let anyone down. Which is why i think the eye represents the eyes of society. Imo its also another reason why people are afraid of loneliness, they think that if people leave and if they're alone, that it means they're just not good enough.

what if mono’s dad suffered an accident while hunting where mono shot him in the face (hunter has a hole in his head) but he survived, was in the hospital having to get facial surgery/a prosthetic and ended up dying from his injuries, mono goes to boarding school but gets bullied, and he ends up scared of being alone, sadly blaming himself so he maybe copes with his tv. thin man is locked in a tiny room, no windows, depressed, just sitting there waiting in his own personal lonely nightmare. your theory is one of the best dude

Thin man could be the shadow of a man in front of a tv. This make so much sense. Mono was afraid of being one

    • @slavapie
      @slavapie 3 года назад +30

As a kid you often imagine different things based on your experience, tv shows you have watched etc. Hunter's place looks so out of touch with the world, it seems like it was fully recreated, based on things Mono could see on some discovery channel.
What if his dad couldn't stand life any longer and decided to end his life in the woods but got rescued and Mono was next to him in the hospital while dad was there in the critical state? So he couldn't understand why dad got injured and imagined some hunting accident, it could be the story he told in the orphanage to the kids or something.

Monos mother dies in some sort of way leading monos dad to go into a depression, he gets "sucked into the tv" and rarely never keeps his head away from it, mono feels all alone hence his name mono and his father sees how sad he is and takes him on a trip to the family hunting cabin when mono gets there he's still a little decided from his dad but overtime he gets more happy and energetic, they go out hunting and mono accidentally shoots his father, while mono is in the hospital he sees amputees because he probably shot one of his father's limbs off ( probably his arm because the hunter looks like his arm is falling off) while in the hospital mono is probably shamed for severely hurting his father which causes him to put a paper bag over his head, he also sees the doctor giving the amputees new limbs which only makes him feel worse about making his father one of them, he's probably very scared of the doctor too because he probably shamed him alot, monos father is realeased from the hospital and sends mono to a boarding school, the school is probably for bad children which is why all the kids are bullies (it also ties into the fact that he would be shamed for shooting his dad), the teacher was clearly very strict and saw everything, he probably met 6 in the school to so they probably had a good friend ship, until mono was forced to come home to take care of his father, where once again he never kept his eyes off the tv and would scold mono and almost attack him for pulling his attention from the tv, his father died and mono is forced to stay at the school until he's an adult, six eventually leaves the school and also leaves mono behind, mono becoming the thin man is a representation of the average adult who has to twork to live and mono lives the rest of his days alone making up this false reality that is the game we play until he decides to go on to the maw and see six (the lady) and wants to reconnect but she wants nothing to do with him and he sadly kills him self becoming the hanging body on the beginning of LN1

Hello?! This theory actually made way more sense! That explains why Six letting go of Mono is perceived by him as a betrayal. Despite the growth of their friendship, they'll part some time in their lives. Six had to go onto her own path, and because of the separation, Mono is shrouded in loneliness. The chronic hunger she later encounters could be her need to search for something that would fulfill her. It's awesome to see the franchise tying to real life events! Everything in the game could be metaphors or exaggeration of what and how a child sees the world and the people!

I love this theory. It also helps explain the end: the whole time, he thinks he's Six's savior. Six sees this as a "misery loves company" type of situation. Also, she's always the one having to encourage Mono to jump the gaps, rather than being the other way around. If you think about Six's hunger appearing after she 'dumps him,' that's her ambition kicking in. She's off to the Maw, to take on the 'fat cats,' and dethrone the Lady of the establishment.

My analysis on the Barber, who is definitely an interesting character.
We have seen his portrait within one of the corridors of the Pale City school and within the residential quarters of the Governess, meaning the Barber has some sort of relationship with the Governess. This may indicate that he is a rather influential figure within the Pale City. Similar to how both the Teacher and Doctor have their portraits featured in the residential quarters of the Maw and are incredibly impactful within the Pale City.
The Barber owns his own barber shop which is located somewhere within Pale City. The inside is quite well-kept, which is in complete contrast with the many dilapidated apartment complexes that surround him.
The Barber seems incredibly sadistic towards children, as he attempts to kill any within sight with his hair-cutting scissors. Though this is common among most adults.

I think that mono remembers all the bad things that happened in his past and has nightmares about it, and every time he tries to wake up when he is about to get to that door on the tv six gets him because she is trying to use mono to save herself, so if she lets him go then she won’t be able to save herself, but then when mono was able to reach the door to scape the nightmare, he noticed it was not a dream anymore, and that he had to turn into what used to scare him, the tall man who I think COULD be his dad, which basically means that he did not wanted to be that way but everyone expected him to be like his father.

When I was a child, I had a reoccurring nightmare in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, and there was always a snowstorm outside. Every time, my mother would leave me alone at home to go to the store, and while she was gone, a creature would come try to catch me. Every time I was caught, the dream ended. The idea of Little Nightmares being a nightmare is the way I initially interpreted it because repeating the same scenario in an alternate world and trying to get a different outcome was the reality of my sleeping life. If LN is a nightmare, it would explain why there is a time paradox, why it appears that Mono knows where he is going, and why it appears that elements in this world can be remembered. Additionally, some of my nightmares involved switching perspectives. I may have spent part of the story in my body, but I would also spend some parts in the body of another significant character, a friend, or in another life within the same world. This would explain why we play as different characters throughout the series. I don't know that everyone has similar childhood experiences, but if so, Little Nightmares being a nightmare is the most believable explanation.

What makes me wonder is why Mono feels the need to open the door at the end of the corridor in the first place. When you play the game, Mono seems to be the only one with a purpose, always knows where he wants to go and what to do. Six doesn't seem to have a goal, she sits on a bench, plays with some toys or is generally uninterested in moving forward. Mono is the one who makes them go forward, he grabs her hand and seems to even forcefully drag her to go further. He seems to have o goal. But what goal? Does he want to save himself? Release himself from behind that door? Does the Thin Man call to him? To be reunited? And then he notices Six and takes her away to not repeat the cycle? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.

Thank you so much for this theory. After seing the end of ln2 I assumed that the whole story of ln and ln2 is based on the life of little children, who see our world from a more abstract and horrifying perspective. Based on the ln2 trailer, where nightmares will be "described" I also thought the games could represent dreams of the adult people, who regret so many things in life, so their thoughts create those horrifying dreams, where their younger selves are haunted by their fears... and hate to see what they had become.

coming back to this theory after the sounds of nightmares podcast; it actually fits super well!! in episode 3 of the podcast, the entire theatre noone is in is based on moments of her past, where there's a giant eye-blob monster that wants her to stay with it because it's lonely, at the end. this literally feels like a carbon copy of ln2 - if we go off this theory - with everything in the pale city being based on mono's past outside of the nowhere, and the end of the game resorting in being surrounded by an eye-blob creature that also kind of doesn't want to be lonely...

Me and my mother stayed there for a while and after about 20 minutes, my father came and we got out of the classroom. By then I realized that our classroom was in an unfurnished apartment with no furniture and as we reached the front door, I looked into the other room and I saw a huge teddy bear start to move.

The whole game is a metaphor of how society raises children to become sheep/slaves. And we see a child's point of view here, and his struggles to get away from the society's grasp. Everything is twisted and nightmarish from his point of view, and he doesn't quite understand why people are like how they are.

I think a possibly overlooked point about the ending here is that mono sitting in a chair in a small dark room seems reminiscent of a sort of punishment. As though somewhere along the line he and six did something they shouldn’t have and rather than stick it out with him six let him take the fall (badumtiss). Perhaps the history of shooting the hunter, fighting in school and possibly killing a doctor all added up and they were both supposed to be punished but six pins it all on mono so he is left behind and ends up living a life that leads to him trying to be upstanding but constantly stuck ruminating about his mistakes and his friend that screwed him over.

@Ellie Smith: I sorta of think this fits with much of this story. However, I think there is a lot more than we think. Little Nightmares 2 seems to represent a more nightmarish version of Mono's past with some events symbolizing Mono's friendship with Six. Six was probably Mono's first friend and the same could be said with Six. Still, it when we meet Six, she is all alone which could indicate that she recently moved in and had no friends. Hence, she played with her music box until Mono found her. Six is alright being alone at first which is why she runs away from Mono but eventually warms up to him as her first friend. Six and Mono both spent quite a bit of time together in the woods and sometimes got into trouble but luck always saved them at the last moment. This is represented by their chase with the Hunter in the woods and the various places they visit. At school, both Mono and Six went to a boarding school where they were bullied by the other kids because they were seen as different from the rest with Six being the new kid and Mono being the 'nerd' as he spent much of his time in the library instead of playing games with the other kids. Mono would spend quite the bit of time trying to save Six from the bullies but often times, this led to him getting into fights where he hurt the other children very badly because he was using tools to fight them. The teacher was also very strict towards the children and would spend much of her time making sure the other children were studying. Since Mono wasn't like the other kids, he and Six were not bothered by the teacher unless they bothered her. This journey is represented by the school trip. The kids are called bullies because Mono saw them as bullies towards him and Six. His mission to save Six from the bullies represent the countless times he had to rescue Six from the other kids. The school library trip represents Mono's main location at school when he was not learning in the classroom or saving Six. When Six kills a bullies with her bare hands, it shows when Six finally decided to stand up for herself instead of waiting for Mono to rescue her. This would lead to her getting in trouble hence why we visit the teacher's house. Six's parents were called in along with Mono's as the two were caught fighting the other kids in front of the teacher. Both would escape with minor punishments which is represented by their escape through the vents of the teacher's home. Sometime after this though, Six ends up in the hospital for a surgery or medical illness. Mono is the only one who visits her and continues to watch over her until she is released. The hospital trip represents this as Mono is going through many things on his own in the hospital and Six is often times not around and just doing her own thing. The mannequins represent the other patients at the hospital and Mono's fear of them as he believes that one of the pateints would hurt him if he let his guard down. Either way, Mono also find the hospital very disturbing as the many decorations on hospital walls are of charts of the human body which creep him out. This is represented by the various masks in the hospital that look almost humane and the numerous body parts that we see-throughout the trip. Mono also watches over Six during the operation and eventually leave the hospital together. This is represented by the doctor boss fight and the two leaving the hospital together in the elevator. Towards the end, we see Mono fight the Thin Man which symbolizes Mono's desire to never be alone or his fear of being abandoned by the one he cared so much about. Back in the real world, Six is still recovering from her hospital experience and once again finds solace in her music box. However, this leads to her neglecting herself and others which is represented by her monstrous self. Mono sees this and takes away her music box several times until it one day breaks. While Six is angry at first, she eventually reopens herself to the outside world as seen when she returns to normal. However she blames Mono for breaking her music box and doesn't forgive him for doing so. Eventually, they do forgive each other in the end but before their friendship can be reconciled, Six ends up moving again. The part where Mono and Six try to escape the collapsing bridge represents their path to forgive one another and Six catching Mono is a sign of this forgiveness. Her 'betrayal' symbolizes her family's move to a different place where she will have to leave her old life behind and let go of Mono. Mono doesn't want this but he can't do anything about this either. In the end, Mono isolates himself from the rest of society and allows his fears to take over while he grew up, hence his transformation into the Thin Man who is subsequently locked away. This isn't the end though. At the start of the game, Mono comes out of a TV and the story repeats. The entire game is a cycle of Mono's past, one that Mono chose to trap himself in. When Six left, Mono like six found solace in something else but rather a box of music, it was his past. His attachment to the past turned him into the very monster that he despised. Like Six, he needed to let go of his attachment in order to be free of his demons. However, whereas Six was able to move on from his past Mono was unable to, which is why Mono's story in Little Nightmares 2 is an endless cycle.
Mono becoming the Thin Man was not because of Six's betrayal. It was his unwillingness to let go of the past that cause him to become the very thing he hoped to destroy.

Whatever that guts-looking monster with multiple eyes are is the main antagonist in whatever this world is. That's why we see the eye everywhere. It's the nightmare that feast on this world's inhabitants.

I love this theory! Thank you, it's nice to hear something that isn't completely time loop centric - I never liked that theory. What if the original tall man isn't Mono at all, but a lonely monster broadcasted by the signal tower, Mono's nightmare of what the signal will turn him into. Which he finally does through being captured.
A cool thing about dreams to note, don't know if it's true but I heard it from somewhere; you cant read words in dreams apparently, the words are scrambled up, maybe resembling something like words, but your brain doesn't recreate them exactly. So the words in LN looking vaguely like Japanese but maybe not exactly (if that's the case) makes sense if there is a literal nightmare distorting the world through a strange signal.

Rather or not it's mono nightmare, I definitely agree that this was inspired off of the concept of loneliness
