    My mother gave her kids Wusthof when we each got our first apartment-chef’s knife, sharpener, and long serrated knife (does a great job slicing cooked meat on the bias). Outstanding. I’ve had them for 20 years, still good as new, and I never needed to buy anything else. These two knives cover all needs!

      I completely agree! They’re worth the price, in my opinion. They last a long time and don’t take much maintenance!

    Hi Laura, this video really resonates with me ! I have been married for 38 years and over these years I have spent sooooooooooo much money on kitchen tools, pampered chef $$$ stuff and pots and pans etc. My absolute best kitchen tools now are my Instant pot hands down and my air fryer! Oh well we live and learn right? 😮

      Yes!! I completely agree with you! I’m hopeful that this video can help someone whose just starting out to avoid some of the mistakes I made 😅 And I love that this conversation can spark inspiration for someone whose trying to minimize, like I am. I have SO much on hand that I don’t need or use. 😬

    Great tips! I love wood cutting boards as well! I will need to make the investment on good stainless steel cooking pots!

      Thank you! I definitely think it’s worth it to get good quality stainless steel. I’ve fallen in love with the Made In pans I just got for Christmas!

    Some great tips. I am all about buying quality and taking care of my things, they will last a long time, if not a life time.
    A couple of thoughts / lessons learned.
    - You don't have to buy a whole 'set' of Stainless Steel pans. Buy the ones you use and need. I got my Rösle pans at Home Goods. One pan at a time. They have thick bottoms and sides, plus the big bonus in they have short handles on both sides, making storage a breeze. I'll never need to replace them. Rösle is one of the best manufactures of kitchen tools, at about $25 - $30 per pan, they were a great deal.
    - Sheet pans and sheet parchment. Use parchment every time you use a sheet tray and the trays will last for decades. I get full sheet parchment at Smart and Final. About $40 for a box of 1,000 full sheets which cut in half becomes 2,000 sheet pans covered. (One box will last for years) Full sheets are great for laying on the counter when prepping and packing meat.
    - Cast iron. Great pans, both skillets and roasting pans. Great bang for the buck. No, they can't be put in the dishwasher, but none of your pans or knives should go in the dishwasher.
    - Love the Ball canning jars. Great for storage & leftovers. The jars themselves will last forever.
    -Knives - Never put your knives in the dishwasher. A good set of knives doesn't have to cost a fortune. Mine are kept in a knife block, not the drawer. I did invest in a knife sharpener which I use about once a year. Mind you, I also sharpen my neighbors and daughter's knives so it was a good investment.
    - Cuisinart immersion blender with mini food processor is a great kitchen addition. I use it almost everyday. (Costco about $30)
    - Like you, I like my IP. In fact if I had only one way to cook the IP would be it. I do like the slow cook function better than the slow cooker.
    - Wood cutting boards, YES! Again, check Home Goods.
    - Stainless steel mixing bowls last forever.
    Fun thinking about what is really worth owning, is useful and what is just wasted $$ that will end up in the landfill or Goodwill.

    I agree that we don’t need a lot of tools or gadgets to cook good meals! This year I’ll be in my current home 10 years and my kitchen is small but functional. I’ve always gone through my house periodically and purged and recently I went through my kitchen and made decisions on what I use regularly, what is necessary, and what I actually needed. Since it’s just me and I don’t cook big meals for my family anymore I didn’t need the amount of cookware I had. I was hanging on to things simply because I had them but in a small kitchen any space is precious. One thing to remember about plastic cutting boards is that they dull your knives quicker than wood.

    • @LauraLegge
      @LauraLegge  5 месяцев назад

      That’s so true! I completely agree with you. I do the same with things in my kitchen and I have to remind myself that I don’t need all the extra cookware because many things are multipurpose! Great tip about the plastic cutting boards!

    lots of good ideas - just one thing though - if you are starting out with inexpensive spices / seasonings - please read the labels - yes read the labels - I needed paprika and just took the least expensive - got home and looked closely at “the ingredients” - it included peanuts and wheat - I kid you not - neither of which I can eat - all I can figure is that peanuts add flavour and wheat adds bulk - I passed it on to someone who could cook with it - I ended up paying twice as much to be sure there was only paprika in the bottle - just be careful so you really are budget shopping 🇨🇦🙏

      @LauraLegge  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you for mentioning that! I completely agree. I recently was shopping for spices and looked at the ingredients. I was surprised at what was in some of them that I had never noticed before. It was definitely an eye opener!

    I swear by my moulinoux rotary grater. Unfortunately they are no longer made so the last one was pricey to replace when I cracked it, I have to buy 2nd hand ones from ebay.
