When soldering XT connectors, plug the connector into another connector to help with heat dissipation. Also you csn twist the cups so they both face up while the connector is flat so you can solder both wires without moving the connector.
I did the same build basically. Took the 550 typhon. did a hobby wing max 10 with a 4000kv motor. Added a bunch of the blx parts off of the granites and extended the chassis and swing arms. The thing is a beast!
There is almost no videos on people going from brushed to brushless on this exact car and that’s what I want to do, so this video is so amazing and super helpful. I want to upgrade mine to brushless but I just didn’t know what I could use and what would work, but this video is a saving grace thanks for uploading this.

I’ve ran my Hobbywing Max8 for only 2 weeks and that tape did nothing but attract first and eventually fall off. I’m gonna try a few other ways of holding the ESC. Awesome video though. Mines a Typhon 3S upgraded to 4S/6S.
Awesome Vid. I put a Velineon esc and the 3250kv motor, motor mount, and slipper from the 3s typhoon in my mega. It’s 32 pitch now super durable. Only issue I have is the flimsy shocks in the front. Repaired the a few times hate the design.

First things to go will be the plastic pinions. Next will be the spur gear. Get the front and rear diff from the 3s (different ratio from the mega, so you have to do both). Next, center spur and slipper from the 3s (hard to find and expensive). Don't worry about the driveshaft center bearing. Have run 6s on MM2 with castle 1900kv, no driveshaft issues.
These are good points, but this is the V3 version of the car that was just released. It is running the brushless ready front and rear diff and the slipper outdrives have been updated to handle brushless power. I still think upgrading the slipper to the 3s version is a good move because of the dual slipper pads and 32p gears.
Amazing 'One Screw' motor system! It's a good idea to check your gear mesh in several places and look for tight spots. BTW, it's best to cut the ends off the wires and start with your own solder instead of mixing with their lead-free solder.
Nice conversion Tony and you beat me to it in converting one of these, that said I'd like to see one with the stock arrma brushless upgrade. Dropping a small bomb tonight on youtube when the Arrma upload is finally completed!
Driftomaniacs I’ll be watching for it! The new stock setup is Spektrum and those are back ordered. I went with what the local shop had that would fit and not cost more than the car did. 😃
It will need HD input shafts. You can't set the gear mesh on these without the motor cover on. The cover sets the spur assembly so it's straight.... then trial and error to set the mesh.
You are very right! I figured that out after the video and seeing how tight the mesh was. You can get a good idea if you really work on getting the spur sitting centered, but it needs to be tested after. Mentioned all this in the run video I did after the motor change. I still ran it briefly, because I knew when I opened it, I'd be changing to 19T pinion. A lot of these videos are shot back to back and distributed over a couple days, so I try to address things I may notice I did wrong in a previous video. I'll have a comprehensive look at moving the Mega 4x4 V3 to brushless at the end once I've figured out what I can and can't do.
Cool vid as usual. I still think the brushless is the way to go, unless you get a free one of course. That's because in order to upgrade this Mega identical to the $320 Blx version with the 100amp esc and other upgrades, it would cost over $410 total using brand new parts.
Right. You are coming at this from an RCers perspective. I'm coming at it from someone's perspective of buying it for their 8 year old kid for a birthday or Christmas. They've now outgrown the speed. You don' t have to drop a fresh $330. You can drop $100 and get them more speed and enjoyment out of the vehicle you bought on a whim which was still considered an expensive present for them when compared to RCs they saw at Walmart or Target (and will way outperform them). Anybody that can handle brushless and afford to drop $320 plus a charger and battery is better off with the BLX. I've written this out before. There's a reason I didn't get the same 100amp ESC and Motor....because at that point you might as well think about just getting the BLX vs. dropping over $150 on electronics. I figure this would make it fun as a bridge to their next RC car. You could do it for less if you bought something on Amazon like a GoolRC or bought a used system on Facebook marketplace.
My 8 year old has been playing with my 3s typhon and I think I'm going to get him the brushed version. I put a 7700kV castle in his 2wd stampede on 3s 17 tooth pinion and it's to fast for me even now I'm in a pickle
Hey glad I found this video, thanks for the useful info! Got this car for my 8yo for Christmas and he's already outgrown the speed. man thank you for this video.. im trying to get into upgrading and moding my rc cars.. just got this and want to start upgrading and cant get any help.. than here came your channel to save me thanks man...
My first electric 1/10 is a Granite that was converted to Brushless. its got a SPektrum 3300 and 85a ESC, with the 15t pinion and stock everything else, its a fast little sucker on 3s. but the gearhead in me wants to know what a bigger motor would do on it, I think im already verging on the edge of what the little truck is capable of using and having fun. I fell like at some point, they get not fun trying to control power.
Doing the same mod to my Mega, but if placing the ESC where U have done you got like 1-2mm Clarence from the ESC fan to the body shell. So I will not recommend that placement. It fits down in the chassis perfect.
Yeah. I need to go to a 32p spurt. Did you change out the entire slipper to the 3s one? I have one ready to drop in....but wanted to see what would happen to the stock slipper assembly
@@CCxRC I did do an entire switch to the 3s slipper. It can be done with the stock assembly but it's just way easier to put in the 3s. Well, my husband made the 1 from the stock assembly. I smoked it on 1st run too though! The 3s, even I can put it in. He did saw the piece, the screw that goes threw the spring, screws into...in 2 pieces (spring screw nut)to get a good snug fit. Good luck
Thanks for taking the time to make this detailed video - brand new to RC and this helped with taking things apart. I do have a quick question though - I heard a weird grinding noise and a strong burning smell coming from my car about 4 days after buying it. Hope I am getting the terminology right... i opened the motor mount and saw where the spur gear and pinion gear mesh. The spur gear looked a little big chewed up in some areas and the spur gear seemed to have a lot of play - as in the shaft itself seemed a bit wobbly. It was clear that the "wobblyness" could hook up the gears or pull far enough apart that it would slip. Is it safe to say the pinion shaft should have no wobble? Any idea what would cause that? I have submitted a technical support request with Horizon Hobby but their response times are very slow. BTW - I love this truck, and while only having it for 4 days I can say I completely beat the crap out of it through dirt, gravel, mud, wood chips, etc - so I kind of assumed some things would go wrong.
Glad it was helpful Dave. It will have wobble when apart because it is held in place when the other half of the plastic case is screwed together and holds the shaft. It does make it difficult to set the gear mesh. It's possible that dirt and other grime got in there. Some people drill/cut open a spot in the chassis below the spur gear to let the dirt that gets in fall out the bottom.
@@CCxRC Ok - thanks for the quick reply. And yes - a lot of debris got in there, I had to keep cleaning it out. Thats a good idea about drilling the hole underneath.

Can you go up in pinion size from a 17 to a 19 doesn't that make it slower kind of like a bicycle or a mountain bike going up in gears on the front sprocket
but now you have me second guessing. It's like when I lock the car and go into a store...but don't remember locking it....I have to go back and check 🤦♂️ So thanks for that 😂😂😂😂
Regarding your choice of the XT60 vs the EC5, aren't you concerned about dropping the limit of the connector by half? Have you experienced in your future runs that the XT60 gets too hot?
I don't know. It was small and inexpensive. The ESC isn't rated for a 1/8 buggy though...but I think it'll handle this. We'll see how long it lasts and if it gets too hot.
Hey guys I'm a total noob to RC stuff. does anyone know if you have to swap out the ESC in order to convert to brushless or does a brushless motor work just fine with the stock ESC. Also if not what is the benefit of the ESC converting
@@CCxRC would I be able to use the 18T pinion gear or would I just use the standard 3S pinion gear? Also the 32 pitch spur gear, how many teeth would that be assuming 57T right?
I probably end up doing same..... Thank for the info. 1st arrma vehicle so trying get a Lil here n there. I've owned everything but 1 til my son wanted it...... Pretty fun buggy for the price tho
It wasn't as fast as I'd expected. I did a speed test with it, but wasn't blown away. Got it to 37mph, but destroyed the spur gear. Setting the mesh is tricky, because when the case is opened....it's not locked in place. I have a 32pitch setup I want to try in it
@@CCxRC oh ok makes sense. Yeah lots of weak links. Needs to be locked like the 6s one is. 32 pitch will help forsure. Now was that on 2s or 3s the 37mph?
The one I got was the brushed version of the Typhon. They have a 3s BLX version and 6S version as well. I'm just working through what new people might go through to upgrade their brushed versions if they start with one. Max10 4000kv is nice too. I just went with what was in stock at my local Hobbytown.
Street Blue glad to hear it. It’s my first one. I usually buy castle creations combos, but wanted to keep this one more budget friendly and I’ve loved my Hobbywing Axe crawler systems
@@CCxRC btw, isn't the mesh too tight, ccxrc? the wheels. stopped too fast!? never heard about Castle Creations, at least not in Poland, are they more durable than Hobbywing or SkyRC motors/esc/combos?
@@deltazero3796 the wheels did stop fast. Not sure I want more space than it has though. There was definitely play already between the pinion and spur. I'm not a huge fan of 48pitch gears as there is little room for error in the mesh. I don't know who had the better systems. I've just always ran Castle and like their programming software.
ed glauner they are sold out right now a lot of places. There is a new Version 3 of them coming out that have a new controller like this one. There are links in the description to the BLX models through Horizon Hobby site. When they come in stock they will ship. I pre-ordered a Big Rock BLX
I stripped out two spurs on my first battery through mine. Even on just 2s, is too much power for that 48 pitch gear or my car had some sort of slop/defect :(
Hobby logic: let's buy a super model with 350$.now let's upgrade the batteries ,the motor ,suspension ,aesthetics and tires . overall 900$....now i am ready to buy another model
Dont do it folks! i have tried several times and each and every time the plastic spur gear just cant take it and strips in no time, as in within a battery pack or two at most so unless you can find a steel spur to take the brushless power you best buy 20 spurs to change with each battery pack.
CCxRC It’s possible mesh sounded a little screechy , having experience with these arrmas Diff it’s worth popping one out to see if the diff is spinning freely around the yoke I found every one of them so far to bind causing a drag which will increase load .🤷♂️
It’s that the spur gear moves around making it hard to set mesh. You have to make sure it’s centered and check it when closed. It moved the spur when the chase held the other side in place
No offense but outside of these videos I can see why some people stay away from this hobby. If you call some of these retailers they have no clue, so dam frustrating. My son's car is making a clicking noise near the rear wheels when you roll it. I think it's the motor so I had some questions about what I need to purchase and everyone has been helpless but this video has been informative but I still don't know what to get smh
@@CCxRC I didn't o[pen it up but the car rolls with now issues on noises with the motor out so I'm thinking it's the motor what you think? Also if I have to replace the motor what do you recommend?
The Max10SCT is a bigger ESC then the one I got. This isn't rated to 1/8 scale buggy either, but I'm not trying to go crazy with this yet. I'm going out on a limb, but I think this will work with this car alright if I keep it geared right.

Question, how did this work out? Were there any problems? Thinking of doing this mod to my sons Typhon v3.
need to get the 32 pitch spur assembly from the 3s lineup. It helped a lot
@@CCxRC would I be able to use the 18T pinion gear or would I just use the standard 3S pinion gear? Also the 32 pitch spur gear, how many teeth would that be assuming 57T right?
How's the slipper holding up. I put a 3300kv on my son's. Just hope it doesn't burn it up lol 😂
I upgraded to a 3s Blx 32pitch slipper
I probably end up doing same..... Thank for the info. 1st arrma vehicle so trying get a Lil here n there. I've owned everything but 1 til my son wanted it...... Pretty fun buggy for the price tho
Ok bro can you tell us how she has been holding? Gotta believe that's 55mph speed with that system in there
It wasn't as fast as I'd expected.
Now was that on 2s or 3s the 37mph?
it's brushed in stock?!
and i use max10 4000kv in my Rustler XL-5 4x4 :D
The one I got was the brushed version of the Typhon. They have a 3s BLX version and 6S version as well. I'm just working through what new people might go through to upgrade their brushed versions if they start with one. Max10 4000kv is nice too. I just went with what was in stock at my local Hobbytown.
@@CCxRC Good choice, so far my max10 works flawless:D
changed receiver steering device for RadioLink, because more options :)
Great info
How is this setup holding up? I would like to upgrade my son's brushed motor setup to brushless
It dont hold up mate.
I have tried but cant find a steel spur gear and the plastic ones strip very fast.
Ur going to strip spur gears I would have went mod 0.8 for spur and pinion if u look at all brushless rcs went mod 0.8
That speed control and motor combo costs more than the buggy.
Great informative video. I'm doing the same conversion to a Granite Mega V3.
I’d get a bigger system for that. Those big wheels will really be a strain on this system.
@@CCxRC I'm using a Arrma 2050KV out of another model with the Arrma 100 BLX ESC. Good enough system for a cheap basher.
What size mod does that spur gear come with? .6, .8 ? Or what? Or does it come with 48 pitch?
It comes 48p, but I’d recommend getting the 32p slipper assembly and changing the pinion.
@@CCxRC thanks. What is chanting? Sorry about all the questions
@@billy3650 I meant to type changing. I corrected it in case anyone else is reading and looking for this answer. :)
So was it cheaper than just buying the 3s one or is it better 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Cheaper and in stock locally. Just seeing what we can do to give people more speed without breaking the bank. Not everyone need 50mph.
But the 3s BLX is a better deal if you don’t need to start slow.
Great videos much help can anyone give me a hand list my paper to put the setting in is there a website where I can find it?
^*Lost my paper with the list to put the settings
CCxRC how durable is the typhon and how much is it i might consider purchasing one and is it water proof stock can it run lipo battery?????
this one was $220. It's a great starter car. If you know you want a really fast one from the start, the $330 Typhon 4x4 BLX is a better option.
@@CCxRC what site can i buy the typhon arma blx from amazon??
ed glauner they are sold out right now a lot of places. There is a new Version 3 of them coming out that have a new controller like this one. There are links in the description to the BLX models through Horizon Hobby site. When they come in stock they will ship. I pre-ordered a Big Rock BLX
rule of thumb is if you cant put your finger on the motor for two seconda then its too hot
Im wondering will this single side slipper hold the brushless power?
I'm going to see. I have a 3s slipper on the ready that I'm hoping will drop in if it gets obliterated.
Just buy the brushless version. Done.
This is for people who have already bought the mega
The trick is to buy the 3s blx slipper and 32p gear. That's what I did and it worked great.
@@CCxRC A good way to go but i cant afford that these days...
Bash on mate.
I highly recommend you heat the connector for a moment before tinning my man.
Something is wrong with that it doesn’t run free !
Agreed.
Going to up the pinion to 19t and see what’s causing binding. The mesh looked and felt good...but maybe not.
CCxRC
It’s possible mesh sounded a little screechy , having experience with these arrmas Diff it’s worth popping one out to see if the diff is spinning freely around the yoke I found every one of them so far to bind causing a drag which will increase load .🤷♂️
It could be the rear differential. Might have to open that and see if the teeth are all still in tact
@@CCxRC I was just thinking that. The car was purchased new in Dec and he barely drove it, would you say these guy bad pretty fast
@@CCxRC I didn't o[pen it up but the car rolls with now issues on noises with the motor out so I'm thinking it's the motor what you think? Also if I have to replace the motor what do you recommend?
Very poor choice of motor and esc. Really not gonna handle 3s
I got the max10sct in my 1/8 scale buggy. Even though it's advertised for 1/10 scale only i had no issues with it. Runs 4s and hauls ass. 👍
The Max10SCT is a bigger ESC then the one I got. This isn't rated to 1/8 scale buggy either, but I'm not trying to go crazy with this yet. I'm going out on a limb, but I think this will work with this car alright if I keep it geared right.
@@CCxRC should work fine as long as the gearing is right. 3100kv in a 1/8 scale is a little high.
@@OldfartRC1 what would be good for 1/8th scale then
@@robertarraiza max8 combo would be ideal.
