for me the most haunting thing is all the similarities to the Race and Dale himself
Dale was 49 years old when he died, the 2001 Daytona 500 had 49 lead changes,
on that final lap he was battling for third, Dales number is 3 and his final moments were in turn 3,
Dale started the 2001 Daytona 500 in 7th, he had 7 Championships

I too disagree with EmpLemon about the danger. I feel like all the safety improvements have given drivers license to play dirtier, leaning into the scrappy spirit of NASCAR. I agree with you, I just feel like a lot of older media has simply become overshadowed by new media. Despite all that, I view NASCAR as an art, it's a performance of speed, and ruthless driving, something that new media just doesn't have. As cathartic as seeing a sick knife kill in CSGO, or a victory royale is, none of that compares to seeing things like Kenseth starching Logano, or Dale Jr. channeling the spirit of his dad on victory lane.

Finally caught one of these. The last 2 didn't appear in my sub box.
About the last question.... about the danger. The answer came out extremely long, so I'd appreciate if you read it all. I think it's worth it.
The danger of NASCAR until about 2004 was the fact that a driver could get injured at any time. A tire could fail, the engine could blow up and the impact without a SAFER barrier could be costly...
I think I know what EMP was trying to say.
The appeal of NASCAR from those days was the same appeal he pointed out earlier in the video - the fight with the danger, physics ans nature itself. That made the drivers like astronauts. Something bad could happen at any moment and these brave, talented individuals knew what these dangers were and risked their health and well being to do what they loved.
Nowadays however... The danger is fabricated in a way. Like most things in NASCAR. The close finishes are fabricated by artificially bunching the cars together by decreasing the power from 900 to 550 HP and giving the cars higher downforce and atleast 3 mandatory cautions throughout the race... The close championship battle is artificially fabricated by the playoffs and an idiotic points system.
The same way with the danger. The danger now isn't the car, it isn't the wall, it isn't the physics and engineering.
It's the reckless behavior of some drivers that is often encouraged by NASCAR and the rules.
A good example of it is the 2020 Daytona 500 finish, when Ryan Newman nearly passed away after flipping after contact with Ryan Blaney, when they were coming to the finish.
    Why did that crash happen?
It wasn't anyone's fault. It was the fault of NASCAR executives that made the leader at Daytona and Talladega be at a constant disadvantage.
The closing speeds in the draft are too big, because the leading car, out of the draft, gets affected by the drag so much that it loses speed dramatically, much more than in previous years. Something like that happened again in 2021 Daytona 500. It's become acceptable to crash a driver at 200 MPH.
Like Austin Dillon did in 2018, when he crashed Aric Almirola entering turn 3 at Daytona on the last lap to win the race, instead of finishing in 2nd.
Joey Logano crashed Denny Hamlin at California in 2013, because they had a disagreement at Bristol earlier that year. In post race interviews he (Logano) says that this crash was revenge for what happened at Bristol. Denny ends up with a broken BACK. Logano then changes his mind and says that it was an accident. He never got penalized for wrecking a driver on purpose at 200MPH, because he wanted to retaliate for something that happened at a track where speeds don't exceed 130.
The last example of this dangerous driving I will bring up is Ross Chastain at Daytona on 2 separate occasions.
One was in xFinity, the other was in Cup.
In the xFinity race he drove straight through his teammate, who was leading at the time, when his team was running 1-2-3. Both crashed hard.
He tried to fit his car in a gap that was going to disappear. After the race he said "What was I going to do? Run 2nd?" He wrecked his teammate at 200 to not finish 2nd... And finished waaay down the order.
Earlier that same year I believe, he went on the apron of turn 1 (which is out of bounds) and crashed multiple cars.
    He wasn't penalized.
NASCAR and the young "nothing will ever happen to me" drivers are using the safety innovations and advancements made after Earnhardt's death to produce more crashes and spice up the show. It seems like everytime they go to Daytona or Talladega the leader gets crashed.
Which is in my opinion absolutely horrible and shouldn't happen.
The cars on NASCAR trscks are the safest they have ever been. It's a great thing, but that safety shouldn't be exploited to make the races "MoRe EnTeRtAiNiNg" by producing more crashes.
After the new car came out in 2007 the racing product on the track suffered and now NASCAR is trying to fill in the holes that they made themselves with crashes, crashes and crashes. Because they think that drivers can't get hurt anymore...
They can. It's still dangerous. The danger itself is different than it was earlier.

I'm in agreement that there's not been another driver to compete w/what Dale was, but I do disagree that the much overdue safery measures are what is causing NASCAR's downward trend. It's not like drivers still aren't at risk for serious injury (see: Newman, Ryan) or potentially death.
One thing not mentioned is how NASCAR's rise coincided with Indycar's decision to set themselves on fire & blow themselves up in 1995. That made NASCAR a lot more attractive to sponsors, drivers, & teams & created a bit of a positive feedback loop. Only in the last decade has Indycar started to get its act together again, culmination in the Hulman-Georges selling their interests to Penske. NASCAR has been facing ever stiffer competiti3from the former king of U.S. auto racing. I would argue what we're seeing is more of a regression to the mean.

It's not so much that NASCAR lost fans. They had a big peak for a while and expanded racetrack capacity to match. It was a temporary peak and retracted to where they were before. 60,000 fans at Bristol with a capacity of 60,000 is a sell out. 60,000 at Bristol with a capacity of 150,000 looks like disaster. Their ratings drop is comparable to all other televised programming. A standard race still outrates a regular season NBA or MLB game or a regular golf tournament.

It's a sad indictment of NASCAR that it took the death of their greatest driver to finally motivate them to improve safety regulations. There have been no deaths in NASCAR since Earnhardt due to the improved safety rules. If they had made those changes a few years earlier, so many deaths could have been avoided.

When an engine can breathe it performs when you restrict it it won't!... Risk or living on the razor's edge is exciting and all in the name of safety they have taken the fun out of everything and NASCAR has become a casualty of that!... 35 years ago these cars were going 210 plus miles an hour and they should have built stronger fences and let the men race because they know the risks and the rewards of the sport.

I can tell you exactly why there is a decline in viewers. People are tired of Nascars gimmicks and went to watch Indycar.
You have to understand those statistics that everyone is talking about happened during the pandemic. Nascar was the first major sport to come back and was the only sport on for a little bit. The Iracing with Nascar drivers helped get viewers before the sport came back.
The other thing is that it is a comparison to how much viewers the sport usually gets compared to how much they got during the pandemic. Nascar was one of the few sports that saw about the same viewers as previous years but that doesn't mean it has near the amount of viewers that the NBA, MLB, NFL, etc. has. Even though those sports saw 15% - 30% decrease in viewers, some of them still had almost twice the amount of viewers that Nascar got.

I strongly disagree with this guys assessment of the decline of NASCAR. There are still as many crashes. They are just safer crashes. The rules have evened the ability of the cars. So, it keeps them bunched up more.

I stopped watching it because of the idiotic "chase" and "stages" of the races those ruined it for me it should always be the best driver from start to finish of the season and if they never started the chase I don't believe Jimmie Johnson would be a 7 time champion

MotoGp is more dangerouse then NASCAR. Way more dangerouse actually. So Nascar never set irself apart in racing because of that. That's what I think. And RIP Dale

Nascar lost around 75% of it's audience from it's high point in 2005 from there it's opinions on why.
For Me it's the chase took away the best driver winning the championship which usually was the driver with the best average finish for the season.
Another reason Jimmy Johnson will never be a 7 time champion to me he only had 3 best average finish not 7
    Mandatory cautious
    No long runs
    no pit strategy
    Sucky racing
    Lucky dog
You go a lap down you should make it up the hard way

Sterling Marlin, from Columbia Tenn., who had a pretty good career, winner of the Daytona 500, will go down as the man who killed Dale Earnhardt, trying to get him out of the way.

  • @Amber-mv8wz
    @Amber-mv8wz 3 года назад

NASCAR's decline has everything to do with the way they handled Dale's death. Not because they took steps to make racing safer but because it took the death of an icon to get them off their asses. They tried to blame the wreck on Sterling Marlin and then on Bill Simpson, who made and installed the safety harness in Earnhardt's car, then they tried to blame it on his open faced helmet. They tried throwing anyone and everyone under the bus for the death until they finally had to improve driver safety. The sport is dying because of NASCAR's greed. They're so concerned about revenue that they've killed racing. No one wants to watch a bunch of whiney man child, paid spokes models ride around a track. If there are any men left in the sport they're in the pits not behind the wheel. That's why no one cares anymore. It's all show and no go.

Grew up watching nascar. I haven't watched it in 10years. Not because it's safer, but because it's stupid. Between the playoffs and stage racing along with the boring tracks, simply lost interest, as most of the core audience did. You can be in demi with nascar. But they ran off the tradition fan. And it's in decline. 😁
