  • When the passenger ferry MV Sewol sank off the coast of South Korea in 2014, over three hundred people lost their lives, most of them schoolchildren. Years later, the victims’ families and survivors are still demanding justice from national authorities.

"Dont tell me to wait, the kids were killed while waiting"

  • @sph6908

I’m one of the people who worked directly at the scene immediately after the sinking. I feel this movie largely skipped a very important part - the utterly incomprehensible behavior of state agencies in the days following the sinking. The days immediately afterwards when the parents came to the small port from which rescue works were organized and still hoped their child may have survived in one of the airpockets. The heart-wrenching hours and days of desperation when the parents waited and stared at the ocean imagining their child just about clinging to life in the dark and cold water inside the ship while the time was clicking by and nothing was hapenning. The way the government treated the parents. The way the government agencies including the coast guard sabotaged the efforts of civilian divers and civilian scientists and specialist who came to help. The way the high government official took the helicopter that was supposed to transport a korean student in serious condition from the port to hospital. The student then had to be transported by road, which took a lot of time and the student died.... there’s just so many things...
I feel this part was just brushed over in the movie. The reality was much worse and really truly utterly incomprehensible.
It’s scary that a government of a democratic country could reach such lows. I’m proud that at the end the Korean people took power into their hands and the government has changed. Korea reforms really fast and I have hopes for the future but the Sewol times were really a dark period...

I'm so sorry for what you had to go through, and the pain and endless suffering the families cling to now, I only pray for them to be blessed and continue their lives in peace, and for the lost ones to find the light. Such a shame that the gov. had to act that way, the disappointing actions of ex-president Park will not be forgotten, and I hope nowadays they act differently than their past leaders.
Do you know by chance any other video that could give me a more detailed explanation of the tragedy? Its hard to look for in english or english subs :/
      Bless you.

I feel like they got the incomprehensibility across pretty well with what they did cover, I can only imagine the rest. They mentioned how they didn't bother telling anyone there were no air pockets and no hope from day one, and refused to let the divers keep working for 3 years. I'm proud there was some accountability in that government, I feel like if this happened in the US everyone would cry and protest but not a single politician, let alone the president, would lose their job, and it would be business as usual. Its a shame they had such a failure of leadership in the first place but its hopeful to see that being rectified, even if it is too little too late.

They were all my age and I just can't stop crying. All of them would've been starting work now. I wonder what profession each of them would have wonderfully filled. They all sounded so witty, so full of life, optimism, hope and trust. I wonder how vivaciously each one of them would've developed their personalities. They all listened so well, they were all such good boys and girls, if only the adults instructing them weren't as selfish, self-serving, negligent, lazy and evil as people. I really hope and pray from the bottom of my heart that they are all happy and in peace now. Hope they always remain just as full of joy, life and happiness.
Do you have any resources that I can read up on to know about all the other issues, discrepancies and corruption that wasn't covered in this film? I don't know why but for some inexplicable reason I just can't move on from this tragedy after having viewed this film 3 days ago. I keep revisiting the student's recordings, the parent's and divers interviews. My mind always seems to steer back to the victims', several times throughout the day, despite trying to distract myself. The sharp aching pain with each in take of breathe that I get, makes me feel like, those last moments of recorded film are of my very own friends. Friends I knew, friends I wanted to have in my life as I grew up. I get chocked up with an overwhelming sense of loss, even though I never knew a single person on board and don't even speak the same language or share the same nationality. I lost both my parents to horrific murders when I was 11, their death is also shrouded under government corruption and agenda and I never really had hope for any justice or reconciliation. I also similarly didn't know for 3 days if my parents were dead or alive, while helplessly watching the situation being broadcasted on all national tv channels..Maybe that's the reason why I am drawn to the victims of Sewol, due to certain similar experiences and age. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any resource you can direct me towards.

This is so so heartbreaking.I’m American so it’s very hard to watch some of the documumentaries. One was a 8 hour show. It broke my heart as the narrator was one of the fathers of a child on sewol ferry. I couldn’t understand a lot of the comparisons bcuz they were in Korean but it had English subtitles and I get most of what happened well, actually what didn’t happen and the neglect and the coverup. I wish I could understand more of what happened but I understand the heartbreak and anger. The part that really gets me is of course no one deserves to be left to die and when it’s children it’s just worse but these kids were so dam obedient and trustworthy and they were betrayed they were failed they were lied to. The captain and the employees were to see the passengers safety first. The fact that citizens cared more than the people responsible is just ridiculous on the part of those at fault! Not even sympathetic at all. My heart goes out to all of the families.

I’m not even a South Korean, but this tragic incident will forever pain my heart.
I cannot even begin to imagine how the victims must have felt when they realised the help they were waiting for all along was never going to arrive. The pain and sorrow their loved ones will carry for the rest of their lives, knowing the cruel fact that their children were brutally left to die in the sinking ship. The guilt they are not responsible for but will carry, for telling their loved ones to obey instructions for their safety.
I’m not sure about this, but I read that there was a recent re-investigation into the case, and I hope it finally brings the truth to light, and finally give closure to all that need it to move on.
I don’t want to wish evil on anybody, but I sincerely wish that those responsible for these children’s deaths are prosecuted, and may they rot in hell, and even then, it will never be enough compensation.
I am not religious, but I pray and hope that these students are in a better place, and they can rest in peace, somehow.
Lastly, though it will literally not make any difference, I will make it a point to visit the memorial site when I’m in Korea one day, and let them know that I’m just one of the many who will remember their lives. 🕯🙏

On this situation they had to rely to the adults, they had to listen to the adults. My hand was shaking as i was watching the footage of the kids sitting and laying casually, chatting and waiting to be rescued, and knowing none of these kids were saved, it just so traumatizing to watch. I can't finish watching this.

I was at the different ferry on the same sea, same time, and for the same reason - Apr. 16th 2014, on the way of school trip to jeju island.
When my friends (we were 15) saw the news at first, we thought it wasn't a big deal. Why? because the news said "all students have been rescued", which soon revealed that it was fucking misinformed. They wore life vests and even took a chance to play with it, without chances to know the true situation.
Though I was not involved in the tragedy,
I remember my whole family called to me and crying,
I remember the rage when the number of survivals goes down from over 300 to less than 100, due to the misinformation.

As a British Korean, when this happened I was in Korea and heartbroken but unsurprised. By then I'd already spent decades in Korea. Even in 2023, whenever I talk about Korea to ppl I have a lot of indignance towards the country. If any country could have an incident like this (though Korea isn't the only one, though with this many youth fatalities it may be), it would be Korea. But this incident still hurts my heart and always will. Those poor children. I have to leave out some personal feelings towards the captain and majority of crewmates because of ToS. But there is smth specific that I defintely think those ppl should be doing sooner than later. And I hope they do. There's just so much anger and rage surrounding this particular incident, because the captain, majority of the crewmates, rescue, and the government did so many things wrong that many other countries wouldn't have. I want good things for Korea. But if this was going to happen anywhere, it was going to be Korea. I know things are a lot better now with their government. God bless the future generations, but I pray constantly that I don't have to go back there ever again, that I don't end up trapped again in a country with so much need to improve on so many fronts to the detriment to their people. I spent half my life there and it scarred me irreparably. All the native Korean friends I have there were grateful and hopeful that I could leave finally. Many Koreans are just as kind and brilliant as you can find anywhere else in the world. But leaving them in Korea, their country, felt like I was leaving them on a sinking ship. I hope Korea will continue to grow and be better for its people. They deserve a better country that what it has been so far.

A story of everyone involved waiting for instructions from the people above them or the people they were supposed to trust and none of it ever came, and everyone at the top just assumed everything was okay because they weren't listening to any other information. It's haunting that those kids predicted their own fate by saying the people who ignored the subway stay put order survived. Everyone who fought for themselves survived and everyone who trusted their leaders lost their lives. I almost couldn't blame the president at one point when the rescuers literally put on a show instead of doing anything to make her think it was good. I imagine its hard to lead when everyone just blows smoke up your ass. But she's the one that created the culture that made that necessary and more important than actually doing a damn thing. I feel like that crying police officer says a lot, what it feels like to be a cog in the wheels of a broken machine, trying your best to keep working or being unable to cause nothing else around you is doing its job, least of all the elites. The two parts that sickened me the most were seeing the fuck-ass captain escaping first, and the order to evacuate and rescue coming when the whole ship was already underwater. How disconnected from reality can you possibly be while those kids depended on you? May they rest in peace, they didn't deserve such a failure from the grown ass adults in the world.
