Letter E- Engage with their responses! An analogy I learnt recently to keep the conversation going is to think of a hacky sack! When the little sack is dropped pick it up again by asking another question or comment to restart the hacky sack conversation!

One of my biggest problems when talking to someone new is going on the ‘self-monitor’ - almost by reflex. That tends to get eroded very quickly when talking around a subject in which I feel I’m in my ‘element’ and the smoothness of the conversation ramps up and I feel pretty good about it. But at the start I have this apprehension that the person will be rude out of nowhere and more importantly, not being able to deal with it. In a nutshell it’s the fear of humiliation and dejection which I think the self-monitor reflex is ‘protecting’ me from.

Hi Dr Grace! I was wondering what you would do if someone was aggressively flirting with your boyfriend or acting destructive toward you out of jealousy? Especially someone louder than you. I've met quite a few people who seem histrionic and ended up affecting my self confidence or personal life. I don't want to have my worth and regard be at the will of an aggressive, jealous, disrespectful attention seeker. Long winded description, but part of me feels there must be a formula for this I will understand with age. I have seen this kind of behavior in academic, work, and personal settings - competitive women trying to bury me or exclude me to advance themselves, take something from me, or just feel better about themselves. I am introverted, socially anxious and have se self esteem issues but I actively work on these things.

    I always kill the conversation.
    Person: Hi
    Me: Hi
    Person: How's it going?
    Me: Good, bye.
    Person: (wtf?)
    Me: Hi, how's it going?
    Person: Good, you?
    Me: OK, bye
    Person: ......
    Person: Hi, how's it going?
    Me: Good, bye.
People can't answer me back after I say "bye".
No matter what you ask, I'll always add "bye" at the end.
Sometimes when people ask me for something, I always answer with "No".
