I appreciate your honesty with the struggles of being in a creative rut. I haven’t painted in two months, not sure why but I watched your videos for inspiration. Thank you so much for your vulnerability, Emma. I’m a fan of yours and I hope you can find time and space to play and enjoy painting. Your work is beautiful and your honesty in this series is also. Thank you ❤️ P.S. those dang algorithms put too much pressure on you 💕

We call the little white daisies "frost asters" because they start blooming about the time of the first frost and of course they're white. Lovely job on those!

I don’t know why it made me so happy to see you paint the dead asters too. 🥰 and watching the daisies come to life was delightful.
Once it’s cold why not get a piping cup of hot cocoa or coffee and paint in a warm coffee house. One with a fireplace. Plenty to paint in there or looking out a window.

I love painting outside. It's a pain with not having endless supplies of water and the breeze blows random bits of nature onto the page, but there's a freedom in it that you just can't recreate indoors. There's a serenity about you at the end of this one and it's lovely to see. ❤

I find it’s important to focus on the process of creating versus the end result..easier said then done! As you were painting I could imagine breathing in the smells of a fall day, hearing the sounds of nature, taking a deep soulful breath and letting all those feels flow from your hand, through your brush onto the paper. Regardless of the end result, when you revisit these paintings, you’ll always remember the experience of that day…the smells, sounds, and the joy of just being. There is nothing more healing for an artists soul than to let yourself just enjoy the one thing that can fill our hearts with pure joy…the process of creating!😊 Thank you for all you do!

Emma, I'm going through the same thing you're going through.
I try to paint every day, but the enthusiasm is not there. I love painting, and I thought that maybe during Autumn, which is my favorite time of year, would just snap me out of it. Nothing is working. So I will keep painting and just hope and pray this will pass.
    I CAN RELATE. 😔😥🖌💕

Thank you so much for your videos. And your beautiful paintings. Well, actually I believe that most people are not taking enough time for themselves. Even if you would not paint outside - the time alone without having to do anything for anyone is worth so much. And when you are in nature there is nothing that you could do for somebody else. Just letting go - as there is nothing else to do at that moment. In my opinion, we are trying too hard to be "perfect". A perfect wife or man, laundry, cleaning, taking care of children, pets, work, painting. We want everything to be "perfect". Well, the sad thing is - no matter how hard we try, we still have the feeling that it is not enough and then we feel as if we are a living thing, without joy at what we are doing. You have to let go of beeing the perfect person that can handle everything and still having joy when painting. I am sure that even if you only did 75% of all the things you do now, you still would do more than enough. And perhaps even enjoy painting again 😄😘

I absolutely loved this. I live in Northern Michigan now after 68 years in a city. Now I have ten acres of natures beauty.
I started watching you and love your style/personality 💕. I owned a long arm quilting business for 12 plus years and was totally burned out after my move north. I still have my machine but haven’t touched it since my move. But I took up watercolor painting to relax and continue my artful process. So I do understand where you are at. And the

Emma, you have a lot on your plate. As someone who is one the other side of raising children, I can tell you it gets easier to find time for what you enjoy as your kids age. Please remember that if you don't take care of yourself first, you can't take care of others the way you want to. I used to lock myself in the laundry room and draw when the kids were past the danger to themselves age just to have a little time to myself. Painting small is a good idea as it doesn't take as much time.

Gosh Emma, thanks for sharing your beautiful vulnerability about how hard it is going for you now. You could create videos about your journey through motherhood and mental health, and still we will all watch it with even more fervour. And then you can keep art to yourself. I just want you to know, that as a mum whose 2 boys are now 8 and 11, I can look back and safely say how freaking hard it was in the first 10 years. Especially the first 5. You just lose yourself and there never is enough time. Never. So its the season of life you are in now. They are both in school full time now, and the difference in time I have for myself and my art and business is so so so different. As much as I find it hard to go outside too, I force myself to take small daily walks. and it helps. Anyway. Big hugs. As a human to another human. A mum to another mum. And so appreciate your warmth and vulnerability in this corner of the interweb.

Beautiful, Emma! I loved the asters especially. The purple ones are New Engand Asters and the white ones go by many names - Hairy Asters, Frost Asters, Oldfield Asters (and this is why it is best to just go by the botanical names). They are native plants! Glad you got some time to paint for yourself. 🥰

I got a lump in my throat watching this. Please don't let people around you intimidate you. I know, it's taken me a large chunk of my life to reach the point that I think "sc**w them" and just do my thing, both artistically and personally. You see detail that some of us miss. Get out more. Yes, bundle up and go for a walk. Take your camera on a cold day, and photograph things that you find joy in, and then go home, find a different spot in your house, use your travel pack materials and paint. At the kitchen table, at a window seat, on the couch! It's really just doing it for you!! You are a great artist, mom and wife! You are so much more than you think you are. Go girl!!

I feel like I lost my joy for painting but have continued to watch your videos because I enjoy them and get inspired by you and your transparency and honesty as well as your teaching style. I have wanted to go outside to paint too but worry about people coming over to see what I am painting and I am just learning. I don’t really know why I let that keep me from trying but now I am inspired to go give it a shot. Oh Emma, you have such a beautiful soul!! My heart hurts a little after seeing this, so I decided to hop on here real quick to share that I found peace and joy by, for the fist time in my life, no longer only doing what is expected of me. For instance, siting next to my husband every night. Our marriage actually got better with me taking time to paint in my room, even at night bc I need that for my mental health! Or not having to go do things in the weekend, just bc it is the weekend! Instead I just stay in my art room and paint all day, in my pj’s!!! I never did that!! Yes I am a mom and a wife and I take care of my mom, but i am also just Sonja! And Sonja is a lot happier now, taking care of Sonja! And that means benefits for all!! So keep finding moments like this just for you!! You deserve it, girl…. ❤

I think it doesn't matter what your "job" is you have to make time for yourself. If you don't life sucks joy right out of you. No guilt, self care. Take care lovely lady ❤

I so enjoyed this & I think we all fall into the issue of never enough time to do what our hearts are calling for us to do but when we do it is amazing. I hope you continue on in your journey.

Thank you for sharing your journey of finding joy in your art again. I was inspired by your previous video with Kristy which I watched last night and just painted today for fun. I am only a beginner but i still put paint on some paper. ❤❤

my hus and I had an art date where we went to gardens in the centre on town and sketched together. It was awkward to start with but after the happiness kicked in it was sooo lovely. I think we need to schedule some outside art time. Love your idea of painting small.

Emma, this was a delightful video. I love watching you paint. I am sending you a huge heartfelt hug today! You deserve to do whatever makes you content! You just had a baby & these first few months are always the most difficult. You are making a lot of adjustments in your life right now. You are a wonderful artist! And it’s ok to take time out to paint. I watched the Girl with the Pearl Earring today. It’s one of my very favorite paintings. I made a special trip to the Met museum of art just to see the original! You did a GREAT job!!!

Hi Emma! I love that you are opening up yourself to these new experiences in art. I too have spent most of my time in one place in my home doing art. But even in winter there are fun places to go to draw everyday items. I watch another You tuber who does Urban sketching. He goes to Cafes and arboreatums and farmers markets. So winter painting “outside” is an option to explore. I am going to go out of my comfort zone this winter and try painting in public. I like your new series and look forward to seeing your journey!

This was beautiful… and very grounding (if that makes sense)! Get out more, even if just a walk if painting isn't possible! Thanks for sharing your quiet time. It was really nice!😊

Thank you so much for this clip. I am teaching myself sketching and water colour painting and I love your approach to single items to paint. It simplifies the process which is so useful for a beginner like me. My main focus is nature journaling and again your approach is so helpful for this. It’s Autumn in Scotland and so much to capture. Thank you again for sharing with us

I love how you started small, and then found a bigger object. So many people get so overwhelmed with what they see when painting outdoors. That is the perfect warm up and learning technique for those who want to start painting outdoors. Start small and gradually go bigger, and like you did with the lovely tree, learn to edit detail. Plein air is so addicting.

It's inspiring to follow your Journey. I have a little tipp for you for painting in the cold. You can mix your water with alcohol to lower the freezing point of your water. It works well for small pieces and quick sketches.
