- Michelle ‘Mace’ Curran is a former fighter pilot and one of only a handful of women who have flown with the Thunderbirds demonstration team. Michelle was the lead solo pilot of the Thunderbirds from 2020 to 2021, and during the darkest days of the pandemic, her flying skills served to entertain the public and inspire the next generation of female aviators.

The Super Bowl flyover. Michelle recalls her first nerve-wracking public flight with The Thunderbirds and reveals the final adjustments she needed to make to synchronize her flight with the singer’s rendition of the National Anthem.
Pulling 9 Gs in an F-16. She describes what it’s like to pull 8-9 Gs at 100 feet above the ground and talks about the left-wing solo pilot’s signature manoeuver, a 360-degree right turn performed in full afterburner.
The America Strong flyovers. We talk about the collaboration between the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels on their joint flyovers to support healthcare workers during the Covid crisis, and Michelle expresses her gratitude for the rare opportunity to fly at 500 feet over the Manhattan skyline.
The impact of an all-woman crew. As a proud member of the all-female Thunderbird # 5 crew, Michelle points to the diverse opportunities for women in the Air Force and hopes that her example will inspire others.
What flying with the Thunderbirds taught her. After a stellar career in the Air Force, Michelle confesses she will miss the camaraderie of her exceptional colleagues as well as the opportunities for continuous improvement offered by the service’s debrief culture.

* I've the Angels four times at Lemoore NAS, once in the 70s, twice in the 80s and once in 90s. I've seen the T-Birds twice at Travis AFB while I was stationed there. I've seen the Red Arrows, Snow Birds and even the Tri Color a couple of years before the crash at Rammstein AFB. I bleed AF blue, but I love the Angels and my Navy brethren. God bless all of you ✝️🇺🇲
Navy pilots don't land well. They crash into a boat without even flaring, firewall the Burner when they are supposed to be stopping, and their equipment figures it out.
They fly very well though. Note: I have it on good authority from a fantastic civilian instructor, that the Navy pilots are "a cut above" even the air force pilots, both of whom he instructed at the same time in a certain program.
I love how at 6:48 she talks about how the T-Birds picked something up from the Blues. That is exactly why and how training together should work.

I was stationed at Nellis for many years in my career and saw the Birds on a regular basis in the T-38 then the Falcon. I love watching Mace’s videos especially when her pony tail is flying tight behind her helmet. I was sorry to see her leave the Air Force but I understand. Growing up outside McGuire AFB I had the fortune of seeing both teams in the F-100 and F-4I really believe that they had a big influence in joining the USAF and ultimately a career.

The most exciting part of a nascar race or football game is always the flyover. I live next to the Bristol track so, I get to witness flyovers even if I’m not at the race. I love it! Thank you for all you do.

Whose idea was it for the covid flyovers? Who pushed it into being?
Who video taped the routine that is played at debrief?
So why do they only do 2 years as a thinderbird?
Thunderbird and Blue Angel tours are limited to 2 years (with rare exceptions) to 2 years for demo pilots to avoid stagnation.
It's a special temporary duty they have to apply(like a job) for. Demo Pilots are active Fighter Pilots so they can only stay for 2 years before they have to return to fighter pilot roles to stay proficient. Rarely if ever does a pilot get to return to the Demo team a 2nd time. They like to give the opportunity to the most Pilots that want to apply.
