D7 First Start in 25 years!

  • Gil Szabo's dad was a heavy duty mechanic and maintained this early D7 very well. Gil says it has been around 25-30 years since the machine ran and all attempts to start the tractor failed because the pony wouldn't fire because of the angle it was parked.
    Several months ago I was able to get the pony running with my brother Anthony but the main engine was seized and would stall the pony in low range at full power. After some research I decided to fill the cylinders with a 1:1 mixture of ATF and diesel through the exhaust from the top. It took around 20 liters before the mixture began pouring out of the air cleaner connections. This meant that the cylinders with open valves were full and because oil beginning to pour out of the intake - both intake and exhaust valves were open/overlapping in at least one hole.
    After letting it sit for about one week I returned and started the pony and the engine still would not budge and stalled the pony at full speed. After 4 weeks I returned, started the pony and the engine broke free but would not turn over fully with decompressor lever in on, half or run position. I suspected it was hydro-locking because it stopped abruptly. I did not attempt to turn it over again until consulting Chico, heavy duty mechanic and fellow Cat D2 owner. He suggested pulling the injectors, and we built a 1 3/4" deep injector socket but it was not the correct size. We pulled off the valve cover and checked the function of the valve train and decided to loosen off the brass exhaust manifold nuts and drained off the excess diesel and oil. We did the same for the intake manifold at the air cleaner elbow.
    We changed the oil in the pony and checked that the fuel rack was free. As soon as the big 4 cylinder engine fired up, the ground began to shake and the engine hood at-top the cage, fell down cutting my hand slightly and bending the camera tripod. We haven't found the serial numbers yet but there is a lot of green pain under the hand painted yellow. Any ideas were to look?

    You know she's true old iron when she's got a pony motor! Great job getting this old girl up and running! Nothing is built as good as it was back then so we gotta keep saving this stuff. Thanks for doing your part, and I hope no one was hurt from engine guard falling off at the end!

    Why cat got rid of those pony motors I will never know.They were invaluable to get a diesel running in the arctic.
    Crank up the pony, go back in the cook shack for 20 minutes ,have a coffee then come out and engage the pony in low and get things rotating, go back in the cook shack, have a coffee and a donut then come out and fire the old girl up.Two big smoke rings later and you were ready to go!

    The most favourite machine I have ever run was a 1968 D-7E. Thank God the pony had an electric start but that machine was a beast. You could haul it down so low you could count the cylinders popping off but it would just keep pushing. It had a leaky final drive that we put a special brew of 80-90 gear oil with a tube of grease mixed in to slow down the leaking.

    • @AxleHildebrand
      @AxleHildebrand  Год назад

      I totally agree. Adding grease to slow an oil leak is a heck of a lot better than running low on oil.

      @AxleHildebrand  2 года назад

      Hey Mad Farmer, yeah there's a lot of b.s. out there when it comes to modern equipment and what to do with potentially good old machines. This D7 was destined to the metal recycle yard a long time ago but was immune due to its remote location. It was not worth scrapping due to high recovery and hauling costs associated with the fact it was a dead crawler machine. As a matter of fact, the fellow who informed me of this D7's location is a metal recycler himself and despite efforts, he was unable to get it running to track down the mountain and haul away. Most the iron I hoard isn't expensive or viable on a modern jobsite because lack of modern safety equipment and the EPA environmentalists. Too many pesky leaks and some factory drains that literally flow onto the ground.
