- I've been asked a lot about my hand suction dredges lately. So I decided to do a brief instructional video on how to build one. The are very inexpensive to build and can really improve your gold recovery. If you're willing to invest an hour into building it, you can save $60 over buying one. Enjoy.
My man! Absolutely epic presentation! Thank You for sharing! 👍🏻
This is what I love about RUclips. Excellent video. Excellent build. I will be using this idea for many different purposes
I used the same test plug, and built it so it grabs the wing nut for adjustment without disassembly. A 45 on the suction tube, and wire in a tic tac toe pattern through small holes near the end, for a classifier on the fly. The real reason was to stop plugging it up with rocks. Great job.
very nice work,Red Green would love the clamp.if the rest of the world was like you and yours,it would be a better place.thanks again for all your sharing.
+bill bailey
Thanks Bill...much appreciated.
thanks John!!!
I built one without the one-way valves..I intend to spit the sucked up material into a classifier on top of my 5 gallon bucket, then pan out the concentrates if I don't get a sluice by spring...your 2" wingnut rubber test plug is by far the best for suction..local hardware store had 2 soil grabbed both lol.
anyways great design thanks again for sharing.
I "will be" a first timer this spring and this will help a lot!!
Thanks and good luck. I hope you find lots of that pretty yellow metal. Let me know how it goes.
+John Jacobs after further testing I am going to buy 2 check valves...mine sucks up water during the test but doesn't hold it in very well..the check valves you used are a bit pricey in my area so I will pick up 2 basic PVC check valves for about $12.50 each...I just hope it can allow sand and small gravel to pass through..so now I see why you used the valves...mine wont have a hose just a draw and release into a classifier on a bucket for now
+Waynos Detecting Adventures Waynos. You may just want to build a hand suction dredge without the valves for what you want to use it for. You can build one just like the one in this video with the tube, plunger, and plumbers stop. Instead of the hose and valve system at the end of the tube, put a 45 degree elbow at the end and suck, turn, dump. You can see the one that I made in my latest video "Fall day down on the creek". Even my brother mike (in the video) can use it! :) It's my 4" sucker...works awesome and it moves a lot of material.
+John Jacobs awesome thanks so much for your advice.. it's hard being a newbie sometimes lol
Great production and contribution. Great stuff man!
Owesome dredge pump 👍, I also build one when I see this presentation, thank for sharing 🙏
Hi John! Cool video, nicely done. Didn't know you were a RUclipsr. Congrats!
I’ve watched as many of these hand-made PVC suction dredges that I can find, but not one of them has made the inlet pipe shaped like one of those vacuum cleaner nozzles. I’m talking about the nozzles that start out flat and then become round in about 10” of length. People use them to clean between the console and the seats of our cars. By heating and shaping (tapering it flat) the PVC inlet nozzle a person wouldn’t need the internal grid classifier in the end of the round inlet tube. Knocking rocks that get stuck on the end would be easier and faster, too.
Hmm...not a bad idea...I may be using that idea shortly!
@Edward Gold if you gently heat PVC it becomes soft an maliable. Once it cools it re-hardens
I actually seen a video the other that a fella made one with a flat edge. He heated it up add squished it with 2 cinder blocks. Then he trimmed the flat edge to suit his needs. But I don't think it was on a DIY video for make pumps, I believe it was on a things to bring panning video. I will search in my history to see if I can find it for you and add to these comments if I can
I will be building this in a couple days thank you so much this is just what I have been searching for
Thx Ben. Good luck with the build!
I'm so glad that you also use the same slice as me. I was thinking I was the only person in Idaho who uses the bazooka
+Ben Caspers sluice ***
ya I did see those bazooka gold traps in one of your videos those are pretty sweet..just want to say thanks for your time and your videos..keep it up and hope in the future if I have a question I can ask ya. here on the Idaho Utah boarder not to many people know too much about gold. it's kinda hard to find things out..that's why I am glad you have your videos on line..thats again!!!
+Chase Johnson No problem Chase. I hope you have a great time prospecting. Its the greatest hobby out there! Happy diggings and I hope you find lots of yellow metal.
Great design John and well explained how to put together well done lad i use the oul tennis ball or pipe foam in mine works well also they are such a important piece of prospecting equipment their what i find a lot of my nicer pieces with at the end of a hole were the shovel wont get to. Take care and best o luck.
+jaffyger
Thanks Jaffy. Hope you're finding lots of that yellow metal!
I know this is really old video but It is done really well and is totally an understandable project that the community can do. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍👍👌👌⛏⛏
Excellent video, thanks for sharing! Where did you get your stopper? Thanks
I have all the materials to make my version. I found 2" one way check values at home depot for like 10 bucks each.
Nicely done John...I really like the adjustable rubber plug idea...b
+SuperB776
Thanks superb. I wished I could say it was my idea...I saw it in another application. They work great.
That last remark, pump it really hard hanny!
great video, thanks for doing it. my question is where to find the smooth innards hose??
Goog video buddy do you reckon u could send all the parts list I love to make one . Thankyou
Do you happen to have a link where you got the rubber stoppers? I can't seem to find any.
Awesome & subscribe and followed. 😉🖒 I feel you on the sciatica I was in a bad car wreck and I have sciatica as well along with no feeling in my left leg below the knee. So I can definitely relate.
Ha! Psychotic nerve! I can appreciate that a little too well.
That comment got you a like and a sub.
You explained how to make a bait bump you can buy them at any bait and tackle shop. the dredge is the bit you have on the bottom of the bait pump with the one way valves
Could you build one of these that has a 3-4" suction?
I like it thank you
hey man thanks a lot. I purchased some of these materials already having in mind to make one, and with your ideas I can complete it. Such a good video. I am going up northern vancouver island in a few days for a summer of prospecting!
Cheer
Thanks Bradley...Good luck!
A good addition to this design would be a second 90° handle on the main body pipe, for better grip and handling - faster and stronger pumps! I would pay you to make this for me !
Can you provide a list of all the parts you ordered? I would be highly thankful. 🙏🙏🙏
Hey John, I put together the dredge and it came out very nice. Thanks for the tips. Got the valves from Gold n Sand and made two different tips. They bale the boat real well. Wonder if they can pay for themselves!!
Glad to hear it!
2" ABS 1 1/2" street sanitary tee 2" X 1 1/2" bell reducer ABS dollar plug(they're called dollar plugs) A 1 1/2" street sanitary tee may be hard to come by.. The white fitting is PVC and not compatible with ABS. But there's more ways to skin a cat. I like it! What's with the check valves? They swing or spring? Or ball? It's genius!
"Pump it real hard honey". OK. Thanks for the video.
Gem state anything I feel the pride to subscribe
Hello
Thanks for the awesome build
I'm thinking of making one aswell.
Can you send me , a diagram or blue print on your invention
Look's awesome..
I'm up in Canada Alberta
Prospecting flour gold out the NSR, near Edmonton Alberta.
Be appreciated
Keep up the great video's, make more lol

👍
Would 1 inch lay flat hose work?
So what size of rocks can be sucked up in this?
Great video, but can you list a parts list, and the quantity’s of each part please. Thanks
does this take out sediment and mud? or only water?
Did you find the one way valves at your local hardware store?... thanks I made a hand dredge but didn't put vent holes ... and what a work out...
+Shawn Doyle Shawn, I tried finding the one way-ers online, but couldn't find any that I wanted. So, I purchased them from GoldnSand. Your right about a work out if you don't include the vent holes! :)
Nice set up.
I have a snake river products expedition sluice have you tried one yet?
I'm interested in how they compare.
Now I need to build a hand dredge for mine
One more question how much dirt do you get in one stroke can't you dig more than dredge?
Really impressive job and video thanks
How heavy is this what's the strength requirement ? Can a old lady or child use this at ease??
Besides the height, how did the gold and sand work? What is the newer x stream hybrid pro? Thanks for the awesome video!
What is the exact check valve you use and where did you find the. Also dive of check valve ?? Plz. That the only part I can't find !! Thanks
Anyone have a link to where I can buy these stoppers? Or what exactly their called? I've looked at multiple stores and online.
Go to GoldnSand.com and search for the leather suction cups. I think their about $20.
I'm looking for the adjustable rubber one as seen here. Goldnsand didnt list a diameter size and I need two different sizes anyway. Thanks for yur help!
Home depot has them, just bring a picture in and they will help you
Can you tell me what those one way valves are called specifically so I can buy my own, I found 2" ones for $10 at home depot but need to verify it's the right part I need
you ever verify that?
its called a check valve
@@MasterBojangles yes just make sure they are facing the right way
Hi sir.
Can you tell me what kind of valve is ? Name or model please ... 😉👍
thanx awesome video really helpful
I just made a river sluice box and I was thinking about making one of your suction dredges. those two would work great together I think..Do you ever use river sluices?
+Chase Johnson Oh Yeah...I have several sluices and have used them often in the past. I generally now use one of the two Bazooka Gold Traps that I own. Much easier to set up and clean out. Thanks.
Would this not work for fines into the sluice? It looks like the inconsistent force between pumps may wash fines away.
Hey Wil. I've tested my tailings on several occasions and have not found any gold loss. Thanks, John
hello mr john Can you publish the dimensions of this sand pump? Please..
hi...nice job....this blue tube dont keep gold?
So I am from Idaho and I am interested in making one of these. I know there is tons of rules to follow while prospecting is this OK todo in state of Idaho?
+Chase Johnson Chase. You can use hand-powered tools all year round. The gas or electric powered equipment can only be used at certain times that is defined in the state's mining rules and regs. But, it is my understanding that hand powered tools like this suction dredge are open for use all year long. Thanks.
John I've seen the video's put out by "Gold Hog" on their "Hog Pan" . They say it is legal to use anywhere as they patented it as a "Gold Panning" Device like an ordinary simple hand-held "gold Pan". However, with all the rules and regulations in Idaho pertaining to even personal recreational prospecting would it be legal to use in Idaho?
i wouldn't use anything with ribs on the inside.. it'll act like a sluice inside that hose.. get something lined or with a smooth inside.. you'll be amazed how much gold gets stuck in those poop hoses.
That’s the one
Where can we supply the valve?
He said he got his from gold n sands
ficou muito bom
Хорошая помпа! Молодец!
if you want it to work great you need it inside with a 45 degree ventilation valve otherwise the flap will lock. you can only use it for water sorry.
john, where does one get the one way valves?
ahhh gold N sands okay. thank you. I'll be building this, I already know where the gold is : )
It would really help if you put the model/part numbers, cost, and where purchased in description/comments. Have not been able to find the plug you purchased.
Home depot is where he got the plug, they sell them on Amazon too
@@poopinpainz166 Once again part numbers not just where you can get as there a many similar brands and parts and they vary by region. Not hard to provide when you yourself purchased.
“Criks”,
Must be in the Midwest. It’s a “Creeeeek”. Lol
Creek/Crick. Potato/Potauto. Tomato/Tomauto
lol
My grandfather was born in Venice, CA and he says Criks and rut instead of root. Must just be the older generations.
i hate to say it bur those pipe stops will get tight and hard to pull, and also collect dirt, they not the best solution for this.
i have the same dredge i built years ago, all the parts are available @ home depot.. The Flexible Corrugated rubber Bellow is much better to use
Thanks for the comment and insight Csaba. At times it does get a little tight...I just pop the handle out of the tube and re-adjust the stopper. Thanks again.
The problem with this design is the check valves will get pebbles stuck in the flap and then your suction goes to hell. Better off building the simpler versions
I get your point...but I've used this dredge hundreds of times and have made 1000's of pulls...and the check valves have NEVER failed due to a pebble getting stuck in the flap.
GREAT IDEA! I HAVE THE SNIPER
+J Dean Thank J.
there is no November 17th, 2014 installment.
Jingle himer smit, his name is my name too.
Lol...never heard that one before!
Pump it really hard honey.
I laughed. And she did...
I'm six foot seven, can you make me one
Hi John,
I like your design and I'm gonna build one. (I'm 6'4", too.) but I thought 30 bucks was a bit steep for the valves. Here's a link to another RUclips contributor with an inexpensive alternative: ruclips.net/video/DG6own141z0/видео.html
+Tim Snyder Thanks Tim. I've watched this video in the past and thought about making them for my hand dredge,. But I didn't think that they would work well for this application due to the volume and size of material that I'd be moving. If this works for you, please post a video. I'd be real interested in watching it. Thanks again.
convert electric pump to gas
This is more portable. Plus some streams has motorized dredge restrictions
Use thongs for ya washer mate you can mak 3-4 each thong ya cant beat it.
