As an Egyptian I’m glad that He made this episode. Various Arabic speaking RUclips channels and media outlets have picked up his story and criticized the government and the people for what they’re doing. I’m glad he is shedding light on these issues we’ve had for decades and doesn’t try to sugarcoat things.
last year I was in Egypt. traveling to luxor through the desert we stopped at the bus stop. Bedouin children asked for money using the words, "hello money ". every native wanted money for everything. Poor country, poor people where the money from tourism and the Suez Canal are vanish :(
When I went to the Cairo airport, a man noticed me sitting by myself. We started talking and he shared with me some kofta his wife made him. He pointed out every scam, how to spot every scam and every scammer. He sat with me for over an hour. The good guys in Egypt really are the best. But the scams are also everywhere.
It's good you're being honest about your experience and not sugar coating things like so many travel channels do. Thx., because I know you're speaking the truth about Egypt, from first hand experience.

This is Sonny's deleted comment about the producer Ahmed: About our producer, Ahmed: There’s no way to explain in one video how awful this man is at his job. To understand more, read below. This is the review I left on his trip adviser page. He’s since deleted the page. Ahmed was hired as a local fixer for our food focused production in Egypt. I'm the creator and host of the most viewed travel food show on the internet or otherwise. I've traveled to 50+ countries. I've worked with dozens of fixers and I can tell you Ahmed is the most incompetent person I've ever had the displeasure of working with. Ahmed contains none of the qualities of a good local producer. Ideally a local producer or fixer will do what it takes (within reason) to facilitate a shoot. Ahmed constantly worked against us. Here are some examples of who Ahmed is and what he's like to work with. - Ahmed didn't finish the pre production that was supposed to be done before we arrived. We had to actually hire a local tour guide to find exact restaurant locations in Cairo. Ahmed would not guarantee access to any restaurants and so we were unable to make a schedule. His idea was to just drive around and go wherever we could. Yes, this is the expertise I was paying thousands of dollars for. - Ahmed can't communicate. Any simple question will be answered with a long winded story demonstrating his brilliance and sophistication, yet the question will remain unanswered. He thinks he's a genius. It's true he has a lot of knowledge, but he has no practical way to focus that knowledge in a useful way. - Ahmed is paranoid. More than once he'd asked who on the team was secretly recording audio of him. He would yell at us to stop filming at random times. He'd always tell us the police were watching us. When we shot without Ahmed for a few days we had no issues. He just attracts negativity. - Ahmed has no ability to control a set. Sadly he was the only person who spoke Arabic and English in many situations, but he had no ability to lead the production and efficiently explain what needed to be done. He's easily overwhelmed and if given two tasks at once, he'll always forget the first one. Every production day took about 30% longer than it needed to. - Ahmed threatened me. When we were at a camel market Ahmed failed to make a proper negotiation with the local vendors. When they got angry, he tried running away from them. He then ran into my shot where I was already filming. Then he threatened me for filming him. He said I could be in deep trouble with the authorities. What kind of fixer behaves like this? My team is a small team of four and we were all at his mercy. - Ahmed would scoff at my requests. I've directed over 400 food videos that have been viewed over a billion times. I know how to make a food video. When I'd ask for simple things Ahmed would made audible protests or cross his arms. Once I asked him to have an eating rug moved into the sunlight so we had better lighting when I ate with some villagers. He scoffed. Everything was like this. He'd constantly tell me my requests were unusual rather than trying to assist in some way. - Ahmed is not a people person. This man cannot figure out how a conversation works. He'll spit out facts for 30 minutes straight about a subject no one has asked about, then when you try to join the conversation, he'll steam roll you with more pointless prose. - Ahmed is unlikeable. This is a simple one. He's painful to be around. - Ahmed lies constantly. But he'll lie in subtle ways to gaslight you and make you think you're crazy. When we were in a desert oasis he put us up in a "resort" with no heating and no space heaters while the outside temp was near freezing. His response? "What do you expect? Of course. We're in an oasis." Right... So we were the crazy ones. The resort provided heaters the next night, by the way. So it was ALWAYS in the realm of possibility. The same thing happened the next day. I paid $800!!! to see two farmers cook a sheep. The farmers made breakfast, then they left and a group of tour guides came in to cook the sheep. This was so confusing. The video is about farmers, not tour guides. Ahmed insisted this was normal and that this is how things are done around here and that the tour guides are related to the farmers anyways, so they're basically family. What a load of crap. - Ahmed conned us out of money. Near the end of the trip my team was ill. We knew we'd have to take some days off. He kept the full payment for the days we should have shot. This is reasonable. But then we planned POTENTIAL future dates contingent on us recovering. In true Ahmed fashion, he said he would not discuss any shoot details until we paid in full. So I paid for four days in advance. We ended up having to cancel all the dates BEFORE the dates took place and he still kept 100% of the money. Ever fixer in the world gets 50% of money before and after. Not Ahmed. He requests 100% up front or he'll threaten to halt production. I could go on and on. The point is this. I am a public figure with a public reputation. I have nothing to gain by making these statements, but I am making them because I don't want others to go through the same awful experience my team and I went through.
from my experience , this is the typical Egyptian guy thinking the businesses should be done in this way ,unfortunately ,they think being honest and straight is dump and stupid
There is no way all this was shoot in iPhone ,I don't believe this ,the footage I get from my iPhone looks trash compare to this 😅 idk thou if someone can explain this to me

This video just broke my heart...man... Sonny is one of the most positive food reviewers out there... After watching his trip to Jakarta, my hometown... I instantly become a fan of his show... The positive energy he showed on camera was so contagious that it made me happy every time I watched his adventure... Those positive energies are gone here, yet he's still trying his best to be positive... man... he deserves better...
All I kept thinking was, given all the places he has been and all the stuff he has experienced, if Sonny speaks poorly of you (as a person, or your country), you're probably pretty shit.
scammers in egypt are everywhere Due to poor levels of education, economy and salaries and all of this caused by a man named Abd El Fatah Saeed Khalil Hussain El sisi
Dude!!! I’ve literally was scouring RUclips about a year ago.. because I had negative experiences in Egypt. The people just looked at me like a financial commodity, and if I wasn’t more firm, they would have stripped me of my things & clothes (lol) before I finished my trip! You’re the only review that came near to the energy of the people that I experienced there. I’m a woman by the way!
@Noh Seen pretty sure you didn’t meet every single person to say that, every country has its bad people, doesn’t mean you judge a whole country off of it
@@frankbasile3662 that’s true and this is coming from a middle eastern person who literally speaks Arabic. I only visited Cairo once it was the first and last time. Been to Morocco, jordon, Algeria, Turky, Iran, And bunch of Asian and European countries. Egypt has to be the worst in terms of corruption and I have been to China who I thought was corrupt.
I gotta say though Apple should be paying you for this series! It’s like a giant ad for them. I am VERY impressed with the fact y’all were able to film something this great looking with iPhones! 😳👏🏻
@@user-fp6rb1tx1e I think there’s a mutual benefit if Apple recognise him as they can advertise what their iPhones can do and then he also receives viewers and that’s without any cash even changing hands
I'm reminded of when, very early in his career, Anthony Bourdain wandered into Cambodia and his boat was briefly hijacked by the Cambodian Army. One difference: Bourdain had the whole Food Network behind him; Sonny and his iPhone operators are on their own. This is amazing stuff, Sonny.
Am Nigerian and use to think Nigerians were currupt until i travelled to Egypt. The amount of scammers from the staffs in the airport all the way to the city is on a whole different level. Every single soul is looking to scam you especially the ones taking you to go see the pyramids. I actually left Egypt with a big smile on my face as i was glad Nigeria isn't as bad as i tought it was.
This video is too stressful to watch. These camels are treated so badly. Thanks Sonny for being patient and showing us. I have heard multiple people saying Egpyt is the worst place to visit and I am certain I wouldnt visit it based on multiple poor reviews about the scammers.
Islamic slaughterhouses are the most brutal killing Chambers I've ever seen, this was the most gentle Arab slaughter that I've ever seen and I went on a Muslim slaughterhouse video binge a while back and was absolutely sad to see how badly the animals were treated before being slaughtered
Egypt has its positives too. You just have to be extra careful with the locals. Having a great tour guide will sort your trip out. Even if going alone do proper research and plan out first. I had travelled their in 2010 and had a great time and as we had a tour guide we didn't really see much of the scammers unless we went out alone in market areas
@@adityathakoor4922 nahh bruv people there are pretty bad. I was there for nearly 2 months, I've seen good and bad both and the bad is way more than good My trip was planned for 3 months but the experience there made me leave the place. I could not stay there for any long People literally spat on me..
It's insane people are blaming Sonny for going to the "slums" of Egypt - to fair he always goes to less-desirable areas of different countries. He did it with Mexico but he was received with love & open arms. Locals gave him samples & the workers tried communicate with him w/ all smiles. It's not a reflection of the whole country, but he's not gonna hide the bad experience he had.
I’ve seen enough people complain about Egypt by now to paint a picture of what it’s like. sketchy people exist everywhere but I haven’t seen as many RUclipsrs complain about a place like they do about Egypt. It’s just scam galore.
I've been watching Sonny's videos for years. But this is the first time I saw him uncomfortable and not too happy making these videos in Egypt. So sad. 🥺🥺🥺❤
My husband who was a contractor there in Egypt for years stated what probably happened is the guy you hired either worked for the police or was some kind of informant especially since they were real paranoid about y’all being there and he was having the cops come in to harass you. It’s pretty much a bribery deal, they just extort you for money and the guy gets a cut on top of the money you gave him. This seems like the case especially when he wasn’t around y’all didn’t have any issues really. It truly sucks that you went through that. I have always wanted to go but after my husband telling me all the corruption that goes on there, I will just have to settle with watching it on TV. So yeah make sure the people you hire as a tour guide or producer has a good background and great references before hiring them on. Unfortunately this guy was probably an informant who was getting money from watching you guys and seeing what you were up to, along with shaking you down for money. This is why he didn’t want to be filmed bc he probably runs this scam on a lot of people
What they went through is extreme but they don't do it to normal tourists in a country that it's economy heavily depends on tourism bottom of the line what happened was wrong but they should've been more confronting so you don't look guilty.
@@mohamedzhassanin4353 as if Egypt was different under Russian or British, or Muslim, or Roman, or Macedonian, Lybian, Numidian, Hyksos, or Egyptian control
As a former Intel analyst I agree. I was thinking the same thing. It's just a hunch because there isn't quite enough evidence, but it's likely based on what I've experienced.
Have watched the entire series thus far and read the review you left about your incompetent producer. Despite all the problems you encountered and shooting on an iPhone (which was excellent footage) I commend you Sonny for never losing it and enduring. You are a true professional and this series proved it even more. Lastly, this series has been awesome perhaps the drama helped a bit as well!
Damn, this is crazy. If an experienced crew like Sonny's got scammed this bad, I cannot imagine what average tourists would encounter who just want to have an great time.
Exactly! What's worse is so many people making excuses for the way they act. The fact sonny and this crew have been to some seriously "scary" places and never had this problem, says a lot. He's not even one of those disrespectful food guys. Even if he doesn't like/agree with something, he always brings something positive about the situation. Especially the people. He'd be the first one to blame the govt and not the people. But here, it seems as tho most of the people are just as corrupt.

few of my friends visited egypt around 2012, 2013 ish (during our summer break holidays if i'm not mistaken)..they said they had lots of memorable experiences while visiting egypt at the time and learned histories throughout their journey with their tour guides, ofc their travelling over there had its downside but i can say that they were very satisfied with their journey back then. its a shame that it has turned out this way tho.
I know the struggle. I went to Egypt with my university course and my archeology professor and the trip was a complete nightmare. They confiscated our entire equipment and called it dangerous weapons (spatulas, brushes and shovels) and threatened to arrest our professor. So we had to buy new equipment and they only offered us super expensive stuff, that we weren’t allowed to refuse. When we finally reached Saqqara, all the people pretended like they didn’t know we were coming, even the man our professor had personally spoken to on the phone several times. So they wanted us to pay again, for a permit to be there and carry out our work and studies, again it was crazy expensive. Well, we did have our fun and learned a lot but there’s just so much going wrong in this country at the moment.
The thing is how can we be sure you won’t steal more artifacts to display at your museums? I am against banning cameras for travelers and good reviewers but I won’t trust foreigners digging for artifacts in my country and in that case I salute Egyptian police.
@@OmarKhaled-uj6cc typical backwards thinking ! For a very long time, archeologists don't exports artifacts and lots of countries are even returning them to Egypt... The artifacts exported nowadays through black market and smugglers are through local gangs (even within the administration...) and will always end up in shady private collections, not museums or such... To finish with, I will just remind you that ancient Egypt was NOT arabic, and that in some ways, have absolutely nothing to do with modern Egypt...

Love that Sonny feeds the entire community with the meat's and food's he purchases when traveling. He knows they can not take it with them & can't eat it all & makes sure to include the family, cooks, and their entire family and extends friendliness to all he meets.

Horses are treated worse... I cried at times when visiting Egypt and seeing how they're treated, neglected, hurt, injuries. Every animal btw. Saying Bismillah doesn't show or give any respect. It only shows the fear for Allah for how they're treating the animals

@@anthonybanlawijr.parangmag9727 The sad thing is that the honest Egyptians suffer along with them. Spent time in Egypt in 2011 I was staying in a complex in Hurghada and travelling outside the complex to work for two weeks. Worst country I've visited for corruption and bent police, I was arrested and forced to pay a fine for entering a marina where I had been working for the last 10days police made it up that I was trespassing even though the place was open to the public. Had to pay equivalent to $30 to take the cuffs off after I told them I had no more money. Turns out I wasn't the only guy who they had done this to. Took a taxi home one night , the guy took me into the dessert and tried to rob me and colleague fortunately private security from a hotel saw what was going on and pulled a gun on the driver before he left us and drove off. Seeing how the camels were treated caused me physical pain...☹️ Then again, if they treat tourists this bad, I guess why would I expect empathy from them for an animal.
I'm an Egyptian living in Europe, I usually watch travel/ food vloggers visiting Egypt to feel a little less home sick, but this video made me learn a lot of new things about my country, thanks a lot for this unexpected surprise.
Loved the cinematography and content. I was born in Egypt, but carry other passports as well, and would tell you that after 20 years I'm still hesitant to take my wife and visit Cairo because of all this! Yes the food is nice, dollars take you further there, but scams, lies, haggle is not something I want to experience on vacation! And if the police or locals turn on you for ANY reason , you are on your own.. My advice for anyone traveling to Egypt have actual friends that you trust and know that will take you places and take care of you there, tour experience will be a lot better. Most of the tourist facing Egyptians are smiling snakes.
Having a friend in Egypt before you come is actually a very good advice as an Egyptian there's some parts in Egypt I need a friend there before I go to it like the Camel Market for example i need someone that I trust to buy anything there.
I always wanted to go to Egypt, but after seeing how Egypt officials treated a well known food vlogger, Dam never in my life i would want to go to that hell..

Not everything you see is the whole truth, but Egypt does not always treat people like this. The Egyptian people welcome everyone, we are the country of the pharaohs. Whoever did not visit Egypt did not know its value. 🇾🇪🇾🇪

This is Sonny's deleted comment about the producer Ahmed:
About our producer, Ahmed: There’s no way to explain in one video how awful this man is at his job.
Damn it Ahmed
The question is ,is Ahmed still alive...
I think he had reasons to be paranoid.

My husband who was a contractor there in Egypt for years stated what probably happened is the guy you hired either worked for the police or was some kind of informant especially since they were real paranoid about y’all being there and he was having the cops come in to harass you.

When we finally reached Saqqara, all the people pretended like they didn’t know we were coming, even the man our professor had personally spoken to on the phone several times. So they wanted us to pay again, for a permit to be there and carry out our work and studies, again it was crazy expensive.

Passport(s) how many do you carry? Genuine question as I haven't a clue the maximum you can hold.
Having a friend in Egypt before you come is actually a very good advice as an Egyptian there's some parts in Egypt I need a friend there before I go to it like the Camel Market for example i need someone that I trust to buy anything there.
Don't come then you are not welcome in our country
@@yahyaelganayni4055 damn, wish I had Egyptian friends. I always wanted to go to Cairo and check out the nightlife and stuff
@@camvin575 It is different in every country. normal u can have 2 but there are countrys where you can have 3
I always wanted to go to Egypt, but after seeing how Egypt officials treated a well known food vlogger, Dam never in my life i would want to go to that hell..
I’m Egyptian , don’t bother coming
well known... Here he his in some part of europe too maybe...
If he have 100 viewer in egypt it good. Dont forget those are area of the world where few people have internet and even fewer will activily use it for recreative purpose
Not everything you see is the whole truth, but Egypt does not always treat people like this.
The Egyptian people welcome everyone, we are the country of the pharaohs.
Whoever did not visit Egypt did not know its value.
🇾🇪🇾🇪
Its worst because it’s muslim country if it’s Europen country then it’s the best one to visit this is the insincerity of white peoples
don't come please😂
I changed my plan and went to Spain instead. I had an amazing magical time. Thank you for your guidance.
I love your videos. I feel sad for those camels they were covered in rope marks from being tied up constantly and pulling heavy loads. I always wanted to see the pyramids but this video made me think twice. You were treated so badly and for people to be demanding money and making threats with the law is bullying tactics. Im glad you fired that producer!
Me too. I've always wanted to see the Sphinx but now... no thank you
I had to fast forward it was so sad
I wait everyday for lab meat 😄 for now I eat vegan meat made of dry/condensed tofu.
For me, the Pyramids don't even exist. After listening to some near people's experience and then this vlogs about bad experiences, this place is another planet for a person like me who can't stand Mafia's and double faced people.
@@quecle4776 Fr it was very sad :(
All of Egypt's issues aside, that meal in the desert at the end looked beautiful. It looks like you guys even managed to keep the sand out of your food! Hopefully Egypt can get its act together.
We call this way of cooking “ Mandi” it tradition in south of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
Egyptians are cool, its the paranoid government that is setting such a gross precedent for future tourists that needs to get its act together
Military rulling destroyed Egypt , i hope your country ruled by army generals one day so you can feel how we feel 😁
The people of Egypt don't owe Sonny a god-damned thing.
@@sir8221 Or better yet, maybe Egypt can one day regain its freedom so you can know what many other modernized countries on the planet are like. Something has to break eventually.
I think it’s safe to say your audience is so appreciative of you and your team for sticking through all the bull**** this country had to offer. Love your videos and I’m sorry you guys were treated so poorly.
every country has *bull***t* so don’t judge a country that you haven’t been to, plus there are way better places to visit in Egypt

for a series shot entirely out of iphones - tells us the skill of the team you have for this to look good, awesome content as always the only difference from other series you have is there's a sense of suspense as you always look over your shoulder for authorities
this is the best marketing material for iPhone to be honest lol
As many times said before
It's no secret
It's not the tech that makes a difference, it's the knowledge of the user of the tech that makes the difference
And to the quality of an iphone.
@@jeerzinqd6831 but not any person could pick up flagship iphone and get shots as good as these, it's about skill is what they are trying to say

You don't understand do you?
It's nothing to do with the iPhone
A competent photographer will know how to make the most out of anything they handle
The one thing they dont do is come up with excuses all the time
This series has me so obsessed and I can't wait for the next one - living on the edge is something I would never do (I'm a scaredy-cat) - this is what makes your vlogs intriguing; props to you and your entire team. I would never try most, if not all of the food you eat. I do enjoy how you immerse yourself in every culture.
Sonny often laughs and does funny things for the audience but in Egypt it's a nightmare with cameras. Plus what can go worse when your guide scammed you up.
If your not livin on the edge, your takin up too much space 😎
With all that hassle, the video turned out great! Seeing you guys eating together, makes me miss eating with everyone in the family. Outside our house, in the garden, using our hands, and a lot of seafood, rice and grilled veggies in the table.
Just discovered your videos and absolutely love them as someone who's more interested in the traveling aspect. You do a great job of immersing yourself into the culture
Aww dang…You looked super stressed during this whole time until you sat and ate with those great guys! I’m so glad to know you and your team survived the hell of that producer. You could definitely tell he was trouble. Hopes that you never deal with him again bc you and your team deserve the best. Hats off to you for capturing truth and making the most out of everything. ❤️😊❤️
Honestly I’m just happy everyone is home safely, i never felt so scared watching your past two videos i swear i was holding my breath the whole time. Just be safe 🙏🏾
I've visited Egypt three times in 25 years. The last time was 2010. By watching this video, nothing's improved. I am feeling awfully sorry for the locals but as a foreigner, Egypt's a terrible, miserable and dysfunctional state, since at least 35 years ago.
Nah its just not a tourist friendly country I live in Egypt and I think life is great.
@@yazidamr7545 the sad thing is that Egypt advertises itself as a tourist hot spot
yazid Amr exactly, you think life is great because that’s what you’re used to. If your country is too rude to treat visitors kindly, that’s probably not a good thing. Lol.
agree. went there once, never gonna come back. hospitality kinda ok, but people are very eager to con you out of your money. better go to thailand or something where people are more honest towards tourists..
@@yazidamr7545 what does that say about egyptians? Plz.
I just want to say thank god you have a large fan base and able to warn lots of people. Egypt was one of my top 5 countries I wanted to visit one day. Not anymore... Sad how it is there. I've been watching you since 2019, it sounds like this was the worst trip you've ever taken.
Can't even begin to imagine the pain it took to bring us these episodes.
Imagine the camel's pain.
