Digesting your content for the past couple weeks has been a real joy: you speak positivity and you promote firearms without heavy doses of political commentary that can be polarizing. My first rifle was an Anderson AM15, and I knew it was not the best, I also knew I was going to upgrade it. The only thing left from the original purchased rifle are the lower receiver and A2 flash hider. Everything else has been upgraded and replaced. I suggest this route of obtaining a rifle to everyone, not only do you learn basic functions of your new rifle but also have backup parts in case anything fails.

I love, love , LOVE my PSA guns, I'm a law enforcement firearms instructor , and was called a "poor" by a student during a range class, I had a PAS AR15 and a Dagger in my duty holster. I out shot his Sig rifle and pistol combo. I guess I'm a poor then.

    My guns in order:
    1. PSA off the shelf for $600 total
    2. PSA lower I built with custom .300 BCM upper by local shop for $800 total
    3. Fully self built with custom parts - Aero Matched lower/upper (both BLEM) BCM rails and other good parts (Most accurate gun I've ever fired) $1500 total
I have learned so much as I got into it, and I promise I can rebuild my rifle while most DD owners just buy a brand and fail to learn.
Have since put all Radian and CMMG function parts in all 3.

I retired from active duty military service, and yes mil spec is just a set of standards. What I look for in a AR part or whole rifle is the materials used to manufacture that part or rifle. The worst snobs are in the “cloning “ of military rifles. They fail to realize that no matter how many gucci parts you buy ,it is still a semi automatic rifle without the “giggle “switch. So why not use the budget part. Keep up the good work Randy.

    • @mikewithers299
      @mikewithers299 7 месяцев назад +4

Same here Sam. I'm no snob about brand names but I also look at the materials used and if they are proven. Mil Spec is a base line on materials and dimensions. If your particular rifles materials are equal or better, that's gonna be good enough. Everyone can't afford a Lamborghini but if you can afford a Ford parts can be changed to make it function like one. Chose wisely people

From what I've picked up interacting with the internet 2A community, a "budget AR-15" is any AR-15 under $2000. So if you buy a $1600 AR-15, it's a budget rifle. Kind of like a budget optic is anything that is not a Vortex Razor. In fact, one youtube guy actually proclaimed that if you didn't spend at least $1600 on your optic, not only is your optic "bad", but you're a fudd. lol. Honestly, in my experience with the online 2A community, I've encountered more idiots than I have good spokespeople and it's not a good look for our cause.

I spend my money on barrels, triggers and BCGs. Everything else is personal preference, and as long as the weapon is reliable, it doesn’t matter who made the parts. My first AR build was a QC10 9mm lower, and I spent a lot of money on that pistol. At some point along the way I grabbed a PSA 9mm lower and built a second pistol for my wife. Guess what? It runs just as well as my QC10. My AR308 is built with an Aero Precision receiver set, and that rifle flat out runs. You don’t need boutique parts. Spend your money on accuracy parts.

In this rapidly declining economy, many people have the same income as they had before the decline. Many now have several part time jobs or a lesser job than before. I celebrate everyone who joins the 2A community and buys firearms at this point. I spent 28yrs in the Army infantry. I trained a lot of soldiers. I have adopted the attitude of these new civilians joining our ranks as a new batch of recruits, right off the bus. One of my missions is to teach, train, coach and mentor. It started when my wife got her handgun license to carry. Soon I was training her girlfriends, ladies from church, my sister and all of her friends, and so it went and so it goes. I only do small groups, 10 max per session. They get individual instruction. This is BEFORE we even talk about a license. Once they are proficient, practice safety, and demonstrate they can easily pass the test, then we can plan for a test date. What does this have to do with budget guns? A lot. These are normal women. They are moms, grandmothers, they work, they are on a tight budget. Thank goodness for modern gun manufacturing. It has made decent, not too expensive guns that work, a reality. I refuse to tolerate people that think they can buy skills. I see it at the range all the time. I watched a guy with a Wilson Combat pistol shoot a 16" pattern (not a group) at 10 yards. I will put any of the women I have trained up against that guy with their Glock, Sig 365, S&W, or whatever they bought. The military fundamentals of shooting still apply and work. For all the veteran officers and NCOs out there, what was your most important responsibility? It was to ensure your people are trained and ready to fight. Make these new shooters your responsibility. Adopt one or two new shooters and train them well. Help grow our community the right way. (an aside: I only work with women because they listen and will do as they are asked to do. No bad habits to clean up.)

I wish someone would do a long-term study on different AR's (will never happen). I always hear that the more expensive the better it shoots (subjective), more reliable (but probably still had some malfunctions), and more accurate it is (is it? Using same ammo/sighting system/zeroed for same distance/environmental conditions the same/blah blah blah).
What I'm getting at is most of the metrics for better are subjective or anecdotal, without some hard data. I do know more expensive brands should be using better material and tighter specs but how much does that matter for the average, once in awhile shooter.

I still have the rifle. I don't know how many rounds I have put through it. But, the count is pretty high. In the AR universe, around $1,000 seems to be the sweet spot. Anything past that doesn't necessarily translate to superiority.

After that last video, I found people that had no idea what a rail gun was and who builds one! They didn't understand a benchrest rifle was a gun. And most of the shamers have no idea what a rail gun costs to build. I traded in my benchrest rifles for AR platforms and now enjoy shooting with both eyes open on moving targets. Those that have a lot to say is a personality trait, not a knowledge trait. I used to hear people at the range, tell that it was impossible to shoot golf balls at 100M if they can't do it. Meaning, they saw me do it, but they have no idea what to say or do. Once they are taught to shoot golf balls, they can use open sights or scoped and hit the golf ball.

I help guys with this all the time. Buy in your budget and upgrade later. Put in a few hundred dryfire reps then hit the range. If you're rifle shoots 55gr ball ammo 3" or better at 100yds you are good to continue practicing. You are not a high-speed operator. Worsted case you are a militiamen. If you train regularly any short comings of your rifle and/or kit will become apparent to you. Buy that $400-$500 rifle and get to training! P.S. always remember safety first.

My favorite is when the budget-shamers instantly show incompetence when you start talking about tactics or actually shooting the gun. There’s a reason you see all the budget-shamers online and barely any high-end users at the range or in classes.

Doesn’t matter what you shoot or the price it’s about having fun as group and supporting others no matter what they have or what the price was , I cant stand the cocky arrogance a lot of shooters have of budget shaming it’s honestly why I don’t join most groups , if it shoots and it works for you who cares

As long as the target gets hit and you have fun is all that matters. I experience this with tools, Snap on vs Harbor Freight, if the nut gets loosened or the bolt gets tightened I don’t care what brand it is. If a Daniel Defense hits a target and a PSA build hits the same target what’s the big deal.

I don't agree with budget shaming, if it's just shaming someone for not going with premium parts. However, there are some common habits that are dangerous, and ineffective that could stop for the same budget. For example, a lot of people get cheap red dot optics that are $40. They are designed for airsoft and can't hold a 0 on a real gun. If your budget is less than $100 for optics, you should be using iron sights. At least you'll be able to hit what you are aiming at. But the BIGGER problem is that people will have a Gucci rifle with expensive parts, or crazy decorated handguards, spending hundreds extra on looks, and then put an optic that can't hold 0 on it. This is what people refer to as plebeian. Make the rifle work before you start making it all pretty. The absolute cheapest red dot that I know of that works is the Romeo 5. It's $150 max, and you can freeze it, drop it, shoot it with birdshot and it will still hold 0.
Then you have parts that sound cool, but interfere with the safe usage of the firearm. Parts such as the BAD lever that put a lever inside your trigger guard for a function of the gun other than pulling the trigger. This violates a basic gun safety rule of keeping your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to fire. So you just paid extra money to make your rifle less safe. The same goes when someone mounts their light switch inside the trigger guard. Skeletonized parts look cool, and as an INDOOR range toy that you keep in a case otherwise, i guess they work. The problem comes when something essential is skeletonized, exposing moving parts to sand and dirt. Now you've just made your rifle unreliable, and it probably cost extra money to do so. Bet it still has that same chinesium optic on it, too.
Another thing is part combinations that don't match, or try to make a one size fits all rifle. Why would you put a bipod on a rifle that does not have a scope? or put a foregrip on a rifle that does have a scope? You have to decide what the rifle is for, short, medium, or long range, and build it with parts, and even calibers that make sense. an AR pistol with a 4 inch barrel shouldn't be shooting 5.56. The round is designed to burn all its powder in a 20 inch barrel, and the military has already pushed it to the limit with its 11 inch suppressed m4, and new types of ammo. All you've made with a short barrelled 5.56 is a 22 with a blindingly bright and loud fireball. That is not useful. Try a pistol caliber or 300 blackout. Also, small short range guns should be lightweight, so that you can maneuver them in buildings if necessary. Don't put a 100 round drum on it, and don't try to put one of those dual Scope/Dot Sight optics. The short barrelled rifle is useless as a DMR, lacking power and accuracy. Conversely, a long range rifle benefits from being heavy (if you're not hiking), because the weight absorbs some of the recoil, making follow up shots easier.
Just remember, there's cookie cutter rifle styles for a good reason. If there were some novel idea that were useful, the militaries of the world would probably already be making/using them, since they have guys that just sit there with analytics and battle reports, thinking of new shit.

Budget shaming is partly driven by justification from those who've already spent a lot of money and need to continue justifying it. If they don't, they'll have to admit to themselves that their purchase was not the greatest.

Coming from the machining side of things there is definitely a higher quality of materials used in most high quality firearms. The tolerances are way tighter, QC is 100 fold better, and most firearms are hand fitted. But yes, once you get to a certian point, the law of diminishing return kicks in. Giesslle, SOLGW, DD, LWRC, and Seekins all make a high quality firearm. Anything above that is boogie, and is more likely handcrafted and has more hand fitted pieces. PSA, Anderson, Ruger, S&W, and many others are good starters rifles, but over time, you should save money back and buy something better.

Been around the M16 since 1975. 99% of fan boys would shit themselves if they had to go to war with what the US Army issues routinely to Infrannty soldiers. In the 1980's and 1990's if a soldier lost his weapon he was charged $200 to replace his weapon. So if the Army is only paying $200 per copy and all of the parts meet the TDP that speaks volumes. On the other hand you can not even purchase an FN AR barrel for $200 today on the civilian market. My oldest son had 120K rounds on his M4 before he went to Syria. They issued him a rebuilt M4 right before he left but cosmeticly it looks like it had been dragged behind a MRAP for a few thousands miles. Almost none of the "premium boutique" AR's are worth the squezzer once you start tearing them down and measuring parts!

If that small percentage of gun owners that are budget shaming feel that way about budget gun owners I wonder how they fell, about those of use that have to purchase, less than budget. those of us that budget is top tier, high dollar expensive. Those of us, that are forced to buy the cheap of the cheap priced products, that even the budget minded manufacturers, dealers, and shops, make fun of and don't even care about if we can't spend X amount for budgeted products. those of us that HiPoint are expensive guns

In five years I'll replace the BCG and barrel if it needs it. I'll get a magnified prism optic when I find one I like. PSA or BCA or Davidson Arms would have probably been just as good.

So if your a neweeb and spend 5K on a rifle you get bullied.....that same person spends $500 on a rifle they get bullied. these same people would probably think i'm nuts if I spent $2000 on a nice suit or $600 on a quality pair of dress shoes and I shame them for their $149 suit and $45 dollar shoes, get what you can afford but please do some research, theirs good stuff out there for good prices, not everything has to be war quality for your at home rifle/pistol etc you get the point. We want people to get in to our hobby and be able to protect and enjoy themselves and use their 2A freedoms, lets welcome them in instead of shaming people, everyone has a budget! especially those just getting into the game.
