    You'll go through less fire wood if you limit air flow into the bottom of the stove. I would take the scrap piece from the bottom of the bowl you used to create the sliding window, put a bolt through the middle of that and the bowl with the perforated bottom, then drill holes through both to match the pattern that you already have. From there, create some sort of handle that either becomes out of the gap that's already there or through a hole in the very bottom bowl so that you can rotate it to choke off some of the air flow. Overall, this is a fantastic design though.

    • @QuietNerd
      @QuietNerd  Год назад +98

      Yea that would be a great upgrade for sure I wish I kept the bottom of the bowl I cut off lol that be the perfect part for it. Oh well Maby for version 2.0 - Cheers!

      You can also slow the wood flow by using a chimney that they use on these modern wood stoves.. burning the smoke creates more heat with less wood. 73

    • @ahayseed654
      @ahayseed654 Год назад +26

      @@ronb6182 You must mean a damper .

    • @DeliberateNRandom
      @DeliberateNRandom Год назад +11

      And you could use the ring for the feet so they don't move. Definitely larger than an ammo can. Probably a bit more expensive. Using the scrap piece would save you from needing a 4th bowl, but having the bowl is probably better for the leg stability, and safer in case you touch it. I bet you could use longer all-thread and use plumber's tape at the top for cheap handles and something you can set things on and not touch the heat, like warming your socks.

    • @ronb6182
      @ronb6182 Год назад +12

      @@ahayseed654 no it's more like a catalytic converter on a car. The new stoves are required to have them on the stove. Some people don't like them but they burn more efficiently put out less smoke. I will have to look up the video and see what they are called. But for simplex on your stove just put a damper instead of all them holes. Then you can control the burn. I didn't intend to make things complicated. I do like the stove idea for outside camping I don't think I would try it in a tent. There are tent stoves with a safer chimney. 73

    I'm going to pass this along to my almost an eagle scout grandson. Great idea on a small stove. Anyone who decides to use a hacksaw to cut the threaded stock, be sure you put a nut on it first, then if you get a not-so-perfect cut, you can back that nut off the threaded stock and it will realign the threads enough to get a nut on and off in the future.

  • @randomspirit
    @randomspirit Год назад +125

    You need a damper in the chimney to regulate the air flow so the wood doesn't burn so fast. It will also help the heat radiate outwards instead of most of it going up the chimney.

    • @idlewildwind
      @idlewildwind Год назад +9

      Yes. Perhaps that chimney is also too wide for such a small stove? For dog bowl stove 2.0, try a smaller chimney. If that's worse somehow, you can always cut the hole bigger and swap back to version 1.0 :)

      @@BubuH-cq6kmnot really. I can buy big stainless bowls like that at the dollar store for $2-$3... Maybe another $10 at home Depot for the rest of the stuff.

    The type of wood you burn will change the burn time from one type to another.
    Mixing hard wood with soft wood also changes how fast and hot the fire burns.
    Have a bottom damper is one way to control burn time but also placing a damper on the chimney will help control the burn time and amount of heat. Use briquettes on the bottom to have longer heat.
