Seriously brilliant lesson - I’ve been teaching myself for about a year and this is really useful as I begin to stretch out into some firsts attempts at improvisation . Thinking behind it , demonstration , how to practice . It’s got it all . Thanks so much Isaac!
Hi Isaac good job I have just came accoss your chanel and I find it very interesting. You illustrate barry Harris's concept very well. I bought his method but I didn't know how to use this 5 patterns. thanks for having let us know. Hope you 'll keep on adding videos on Barry Harris method. regards Bernard from france
Mr. Raz thank you for taking the time to teach. I'd like to make a suggestion if I may. Please invest in something to give you an OVERHEAD view. The view you currently have gets out of balance once we turn our phones sideways to get a better look. Also, it's not necessary for you to keep looking up at your viewers, all we need is your voice, a STRAIGHT view of the keyboard and your FINGERS. If you want to show your face from time to time that's cool but just go back to the STRAIGHT OVERHEAD view of your fingers whenever you play. Just look at some of the other vids on YT. Doing this will really help increase your views, membership and your $$. Thanks
Are there any interviews with Barry explaining how he conceived of these patterns and how he derived them? Did he derive this from some predetermined "architectural" rules or harmonic structure? Or was it simply based on aiming to land on the next lower scale tone? The reason for my question is: Are there other melodic patterns that would serve the same purpose? What are the rules in play?
Great Question! Yes it can, there are little modifications for the minor AND dominant as well! I'll do a video on it. the quick version re the difference is: if the major "4" pattern is 5-4-2-#2-3, the minor version is 5-4-1-2-b3. for the rest just flat the 3rd, otherwise identical.
@@MrIsaacraz Great ...Thank you ...i was thinking of using the 5-4-3-2 of E flat major for C minor ...and of course the C major for the A minor.to see what happens . I tried to use the major system in a minor chord and works for the Major minor 7 chord, .. changing the third (3) into minor
After an hour of videos I just got it watching him playing all the forms within the Combo Plan part of the video. Basically, if you play one lick after the other (notes for combo plan are G B C F D Eb E G B D B C Db D) the 5, 4, 3 and 2 can be seen as points of reference on which a line ends and the next line starts
Thanks Isaac, I’m having fun working my way through your 10 steps in each key , it’s slowly coming together. Please keep the videos coming.
That was a great lesson, thanks!!!
I've been doing these in all keys for the past week. Nice practice.

Thanks Isaac for your amazing videos. Is there a rhymic/harmonic logic behind these patterns that we can apply to arrive at more patterns?
I came up with a couple, I think the point is to be creative and make up your own, right? at the very least they sound good in a myriad of situations!
Wich Scale must I use over the 1 6 2 5 Turnaround? Is it just C major all the way?
U can use this with all scales just have to apply the same thing
a year late, but please visit Barry's scales for I Got Rhythm

Is this system meant for the major chord? or can it be used for the minor?

That melody screams grab your girl and dance....
oh yeah. interesting you should say because BH always stressed that Jazz is from the dance hall not the concert hall.
I have to ask: is that a U-121? It’s the people’s U1, man. The old Young Chang, late 80’s, classic pre-behringer Yamaha clone, sounds great :)
Yes, I traded in my "Not So Young Chang" a few months ago for a regular U1. I had that piano forever.
@@isaacraz How do they compare? I have U-121 from new. Now I tune myself, and it eats all vsts for breakfast :)
