    I just thought of a potential issue over a long time... the liquid might come out of suspension over some time. Normally you effectively shake the bottle each time you use it, if it's completely static like it is in your case that might be an issue...

      @lezbriddon День назад

      Add a 2nd pump, maybe the 2nd best one from the pump tests, and have it pull from the bottom of the bottle running it back to the top, to circulate the liquid. wait for the wash cycle to be a few minutes in, then run for 5, the sound of the washing will mask the pump noise...

    Very nice project! In commercial machines they use a dispenser with a solid detergent. They run water and wash it over the detergent.
    But it’s impossible to tell when it’s empty. Which is a problem.

    What about a vibration sensor to start the system instead of the led?

  • @sierpus
    @sierpus 2 дня назад +3

    You could use smart socket to detect that washing machine is working (based on power consumption) and use magnetic liquid level sensor (e.g. SES-07244). Of course smart socket would create dependency on HA (so if it is not working, it won’t add washing liquid) but other than that, you would not need to play with washing machine electronics

    If you have a dc voltage across that 2 wire sensor, it may rot and drop crusty bits into you detergent, happens in a lot of simple water sensing done this way and is a definite no-no for drinking water sensing as you put nasty metal irons into the water. (for drinking a float is used)

    Why not an automotive 12v washer pump? Cheap, widely available, good flow, and if you get one for the headlight washer system, they're absurdly strong.

    Nice modification! The rotary wheel looks like it came like that from the factory haha. On the note of figuring the start cycle, you can use any vibration sensors and put them on the motor itself. That way you'd be able to know when the machine is running or not.

    • @Mellow_labs
      @Mellow_labs  3 дня назад

      Yes, but the motor turns on and off multiple times during the cycle. So I would probably end up with a bug that would dispense detergent into the machine every time the motor stopped and started up again.

    • @adfjasjhf
      @adfjasjhf 3 дня назад

      @@Mellow_labs right, that's true but you could tweak it to look for the vibration only once per x amount of time. If it detected vibration after certain amount of time from the first detection, it wouldn't dispense it. Maybe that would theoretically work.

  • @dregenius
    @dregenius 2 дня назад

    Could you use current sensing or a hall effect sensor on one of the inlet valve solenoids (say, the bleach solenoid should only be on for the main fill and not rinse, right?) to know when to dispense?

    • @dregenius
      @dregenius 2 дня назад

      Also a source for *free* peristaltic pumps is old inkjet printers, which use tiny ones to suck all the ink out of your cartridges in a feeble attempt to "clean" the nozzles (read: increase shareholder profits).

  • @Badg0r
    @Badg0r 3 дня назад +2

    Why didn't you use a solenoid valve and let gravity do the work? You'll only have to open and close the valve fast.

    • @Mellow_labs
      @Mellow_labs  3 дня назад

      Mostly because we don’t have anywhere to put the bottle where that would be a possibility

    I'm curious about your Google fu, or maybe it's you requirements I don't understand. But I found plenty of DC 12/24 V peristaltic pumps for cheap, with one Google search. I'm talking $10 USD to $30.

  • @bitsRboolean
    @bitsRboolean 2 дня назад

    Can you step down the ~10v to 3v or 5v with a big resistor or is that bad practice? The input impedance should be high on the input pin so the current should be low so it shouldn't be too wasteful/generating heat? Thank you for doing all this for science

  • @ciabattasupreme
    @ciabattasupreme 2 дня назад

    Interesting. I would probably go to the wreckers and get a windshield washer tank + built-in pump. Some of them come with float-style level sensors.
    But not only do I feel no need to automate my clothes washer like this, I also use powder soap.

  • @M0UAW_IO83
    @M0UAW_IO83 3 дня назад

    Occurs to me that most washing machines pull in detergent by flushing it through with water, maybe gravity feed through a solenoid valve into a 'chamber' and then pump water through to flush it into the machine?

  • @WoLpH
    @WoLpH 3 дня назад +2

    There are also liquid sensors that you can attach to the outside of the bottle, seems a much better solution than anything that contacts the liquid. That sensor could corrode in a little time and wash your laundry with rust ;)
    Some mmwave sensors are also able to detect liquids so that could work too, but I haven't found a cheap option for that.

    • @DrLamalama
      @DrLamalama 2 дня назад

      Submerging is probably not an option, due to corrosion and stuff. But you can keep it at the very bottom of the fixture, so gravity keeps the liquid in, even if there is some backflow.

    Why not just do the level of detergent by weight.... Super simple and quick. Calibration would be minimal, considering your expectation of precision is low.
