Wow! What an exquisite machine! I wonder if the Perspex changes the resonance of the tone...
Actually I also have the standard version and didn’t find too much difference in sound between them.
Perhaps putting the recorders just in front of a loudspeaker shouting at 130 dB SPL could reveal some differences.
The most involved parts would be the headblock and the mechanics plane where all the parts are screwed to.

Hi - I worked for Souncraft Magnetics from 1978 - 1988 as a mechanical technician and latterly as Tape Recorder Production Manager. It is really good to see that this 'one off' S20 still exists. I recall very cleary building this unit. Are you still the current custodian?
Hello and thanks for writing. I’m happy to hear you worked for Soundcraft Magnetics and built this particular unit which I purchased last year form TJ as faulty and immediately repaired with success. Of course it’s still with me and I’m both happy and proud to own it, together with an ownership certificate signed by TJ himself. Besides this unit, I managed to find four more pre-production units, one of which is an “MkII”.
I’d like to have a direct conversation with you, if possible. I’m trying to collect the most information available on this rare and unfortunate model.

7.5-15-30 IPS. Never sold officially, just a bunch of units given on trial to studios around the world.
