Hey Luke !.. Your Beatles journey is taking me back to when I bought the Beatles Collection box set of all their albums, having only previously heard their most well known hit songs .. I couldn't believe as I worked my way through these early albums how they all contained banger after banger ! .. Hardly a bad song, and so many hidden gems like these 2 .. Just incredible stuff !
"Any Time At All" .. What a song !!! .. One of my favourite early period Beatles numbers, and as you said Luke, John just hit it out of the park with this one .. So melodic and so passionate .. Love it !
Both of those are so catchy and that second one just sounds like old-school country to me but with this Beatles aura about it. They actually did cover a straight-up country song and I love it, and it's perfect for Ringo, it's a cover of The Buck Owens hit Act Naturally.
Luke - Did you catch that John sings the first "Any time at all" (at 0:35) then Paul sings the second "Any time at all" (at 0:39) and then they both sing (at 0:42). Then John sings by himself (at 0:50). This repeats the same way again with John singing the "Any time at all" (at 1:12) and then Paul (at 1:16). Then again with John (at 1:50) and then Paul (at 1:53). Then again with John (at 2:20) and then Paul (at 2:24). Just one of those special little Beatle touches... that many of my Beatles mates never realized before I mentioned it to them.
Same for me, @FavoriteMovieDate, Exactly how I feel about the Beatles' music since the beginning when I first heard "I Want to Hold Your Hand" the day after Christmas 1963, when I was 16. LOVE them ALL
Two of my favorite earlier Beatles songs (I have quite a few!). You never mentioned that little bass run in 'I'll Cry Instead' where he sings 'and show you what you're lovin' man can do' - love that part. This album is so underrated, it's one of their best. I love every song on it. The progression they had made in such a short time as songwriters is amazing - compare this abum to what they were writing just a few months earlier, it's astounding. Like someone else mentioned, this was mostly John's album, as far as the songwriting went. He wrote several of these songs more or less by himself. And in a very short period of time. They needed songs to fill out the album after the tracks used for the movie and he ended up writing most of them. Their output from 63 through 66 is mind boggling. They were continually improving and changing and getting more creative as they went along, all the while influencing the rest of the popular music world.
Hey Luke! Once again, I thank you for doing this amazing deep dive into the Beatles’ catalog. The “lesser” noticed songs like these two were just wonderful and were only overshadowed by other songs because the others were spectacular. The old songs from early albums are bringing back cherished memories. You are doing a great job. 🌺✌️
Hi Debbie, I see your name all over the place when it comes to the Beatles lol. Classic rock radio playlists have for decades tried to bury the Beatles songs that did not fit their scheme...therefore trying to rewrite history and dismiss the Beatles as nothing but a "boy band." [insert Rolling my eyes here]. There are scores of metal heads out there who have been duped into this mentality. Yet man of the the metal artists themselves pay homage to the Beatles beyond While My Guitar Gently Weeps etc. They know their rock history and it's importance to how rock and roll evolved, or in many cases, has "devolved"...oh, the irony...back then as you know, rock music was about singing and not just the guitar hero mentality, it was the whole band as a unit. Many do not even know it was the Beatles who started the long hair and stadium concerts....sad....and dumb too...
@@thomastimlin1724 Hey there Thomas. It’s always nice to hear from a fellow Beatles fan. I was ten years old when I first heard the Beatles and I have loved their music ever since. Yikes! That was nearly 60 years ago. I feel so fortunate to have been able to grow up listening to and watching these amazing guys. Their music has and will continue to provide endless hours of enjoyment to me and the rest of the world until humans become extinct. Thanks for reaching out. 🌺✌️
Your reviews made me pull out this album. So great! Forgot how much I ❤ this lp!! Yes, I always loved John's songs the best. Also, who wouldn't want a boyfriend that says, "I'll be there any time you need me. Any time at all." The next song is great too. Ringo's drumming is great & very distinctive. One reason is he's left handed - just like Paul.
The early Beatles were so important and special. Their sound was like nothing I heard before and was raw. You really had to be there to fully grasp it. Of course their evolution was epic but if I could relive any time it would be the early days. Those harmonies are priceless.
I clearly remember the first time I heard The Beatles. I was watching a kids show that everyone always loved, and the host said something about showing a video that had music provided by The Beatles. I thought, what, what’s a Beatle ? The host then played a video they had made locally of a dancing scarecrow dancing to “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” I immediately felt a shock running through my body and goosebumps all over. I’d never heard anything remotely like it, and I immediately fell in love with them. It’s lasted a lifetime. God, what a band !
You do such a great job commenting on their music and vocals ! So glad you let it play. Some reaction people stop every few seconds - very annoying. Been a fan since 1964 and still going strong. I am going to a Beatles event tomorrow in fact !!! Love A Hard Days Night album in fact it is my second favorite as the White album seems to be my go to and favorite album. Keep up the great work !!
I LOVE this album. Nine of 12 songs John sung lead on. If you're a Lennon fan, like me, it's Heaven. All the songs are so catchy, you can't help but sing along. Early Beatles, just fantastic! And your reactions, Luke, are without a doubt the very best out there.
in the newer version 20th anniversary 1984 copy of the Hard Days Night film I'll Cry Instead was added to the beginning of the film with a photo montage before the film starts in earnest, that was really fun. It really should be included in the movie now.
In the 60's songs were short (less than 3 minutes) otherwise radio stations wouldn't play them! Once they made a song that was more that 4 minutes long.Paul said that the radios wouldn't play it, but John said " They will play it...we are The Beatles!!!"
Enjoyed yet another of your insightful Beatles reactions! As a kid I watched them live on Ed Sullivan show in '64 -long time fan. I like your take... I'm learning a lot! You really are musically perceptive and can communicate it well. Thanks again..oh, and your Brit accent adds such a nice touch of the ol' Beatle world to this Texan...
I actually prefer them til about '66. Their absolute peak for me was 65 to 66. The rest was GREAT and AMAZING, but the enthusiasm and energy is fantastic.
You have to understand that radio was THE thing back then, and most of these songs were released as singles. The 45 had deeper grooves, so the sound was more vibrant. Records were 2:00 to 3:00 minutes typically.
'Any Time At All' is completely written by John, as Paul stated in the 'Many Years From Now' book. There's no middle-eight that's part of the song, just an instrumental break.
Any time at All is well crafted, the three accented nots between verse lines really adds a punch to the song, and the "middle 8" instrumental chords and build up keep the song exciting, avoiding too much repetition, and as you noticed, the use of the piano doubling the guitar. This is genius writing, sure the song is short but that of the formula of the day. in the USA AM radio was king, in mono, not stereo, owned by individuals or small corporations that owned up to 5 stations. The "rules" were songs should be no longer than about 2min 40 seconds and shorter. Their motive was advertising time and using the music to draw you in, keep you hooked. where the disconnect was, adults had the money, kids didn't buy pickup trucks or furniture lol. the Beatles music over time actually helped keep pushing that tine limit into longer songs because of their popularity being overwhelming... it was like "oh it's the Beatles, okay let this one slide, it's longer but hell, it's the Beatles! soon songs were 3 minutes 40 seconds or longer. Hey Jude [1968[ REALLY broke the rules at 7 min plus...
The vibrancy and emergence of The Beatles! 💖 it! You might enjoy a video on George Martin and his influence on The Beatles sound and arrangements. In the past, songs were almost always short for radio play.
"Any Time At All": yes, John's intense double-tracked vocals are the star here. Raw, bluesy. I also like the 12-string guitar, the snare, and the cowbell. I've always felt the "cha-cha" instrumental interlude is odd; as is the "dry" outro. "I'll Cry Instead" is IMO top-tier Beatles, showing off George's Chet Atkins feel. Again, great vocal by John. I love the bass/tambourine break ("and tell you what your lovin' man can do"). I sing this in a band as a medley with Elvis' "That's Alright Mama" and it fits perfectly.
I think Not A Second Time ( from With The Beatles ) is a very underrated Beatles song. Like Any Time At All the melody is beautifully embellished by piano. And considering John wasn't much known for being melodic, it's a remarkably well paced composition. I'd be interested in your reaction to it.
It's interesting to note that this album was produced under incredible pressure due to their work commitments. The recorded the basics of the album at the Pathè Marconi studios in Paris whilst they were performing nightly live shows. She Liebt Dich and Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand were also recorded at this time and the mono & stereo mixes of the album differed considerably. The US mono mix of I'll Cry Instead also had the first verse repeated towards the end of the track. It's still one of my favourite albums.
Interesting you sensed the folk music sound on I’ll Cry Instead. It will creep in more and more during the next three albums as Dylan and pot begin to influence the Beatles. Then LSD kicks in…
Yeah too short but very good both songs. Love John's voice a little bit more in 'Any time at all' with more energy maybe, but both are great. Almost done with this album, go ahead!!!
Good call on John's vocal. He's really settled into his mature early phase by this time. On the other hand, IMO these two songs feel just a tad more like they're going through the motions, but still -- both are songs their peers would have killed to take credit for. And this is about the time Paul and John's songs were starting to get covered elsewhere in real numbers. Plus they were writing songs for others they weren't even recording themselves.
John Lennon was one of the greatest rock singers of all.
Love both of these songs. I'm 70 and grew up with the Beatles so love the early songs, which my son loves the latter ones!
The Beatles really did move around different styles effortlessly. Love your reactions.

Looking forward your help reactions and rubber soul and revolver are great too
And I love a hard days night too!! Excellent review..you love Ruuber soul..
"Any Time At All" .. What a song !!! .. One of my favourite early period Beatles numbers, and as you said Luke, John just hit it out of the park with this one .. So melodic and so passionate .. Love it !
This really WAS John's album. He was at the top of his game as a vocalist and songwriter. Paul hadn't quite emerged yet but he was getting there! 😊
What a journey! The Beatles are so great!!!! And you are great too! I love your comments and analysis on Beatles' art ❤
Both of those are so catchy and that second one just sounds like old-school country to me but with this Beatles aura about it. They actually did cover a straight-up country song and I love it, and it's perfect for Ringo, it's a cover of The Buck Owens hit Act Naturally.

Would never have picked up on that without you mentioning it .. Thanks for the info.
Perhaps, like I did, you had more of musical ear than just a "fan" ear, lol.
Almost every Beatles song is a gem. Very few I am indifferent to, not a one that I dislike, let alone hate.
Same for me, @FavoriteMovieDate, Exactly how I feel about the Beatles' music since the beginning when I first heard "I Want to Hold Your Hand" the day after Christmas 1963, when I was 16. LOVE them ALL

Just sooooo good!!! Thanks
Tempo is always up beat with dynamic vocals!
Sweet!
As for the lyrics to "I'll cry instead" John was very much a man of his word🙂.
I LOVE this album. Nine of 12 songs John sung lead on. If you're a Lennon fan, like me, it's Heaven. All the songs are so catchy, you can't help but sing along. Early Beatles, just fantastic! And your reactions, Luke, are without a doubt the very best out there.
Im definitely a John fan and this album is heaven to me. Energy, passion, excitement and hardly a flat note. Its wonderful.
"The bass takes away the lovey-dovey". Great.

Love the older Beatles stuff. I'll Cry For You almost has rockabilly feel to me 🎶🎵
Anyway to hear more LP???
An astute passionate review - loved it.
Long songs?
Yes but American Radio loved short songs, so they could play more commercials.
They are great at C & W.
"Any Time at All" is a very good Beatles song. The break is stellar. This is punk rock.

Also, the record buyers were TEENAGERS
'Any Time At All' is completely written by John, as Paul stated in the 'Many Years From Now' book. There's no middle-eight that's part of the song, just an instrumental break.
Short songs are a show biz trick. Always leave them wanting more.
If you want more then they have done their job.
In what way is it a show biz trick. Please explain!

Hooray!!🎉❤
McCartney's bass walkdown on "and show you what your lovin' man can do" is fabulous.
Great video. Beatles the best
I like the 2 at a time songs. The radio used to play a Double Barrel Beatle Bash (2 songs in a row)
The vibrancy and emergence of The Beatles! 💖 it! You might enjoy a video on George Martin and his influence on The Beatles sound and arrangements. In the past, songs were almost always short for radio play.

John was right about breaking girls heart all around the world
The middle eight of Any Time At All was supposed to have lyrics, but the song was left unfinished due to time constraints.
Paul is singing the second "Any Time at all", cause John couldn't hit the high notes!
Dude, great reactions
The only truly great Beatles album.
What???
