Lennon was such a masterful melody writer. I don't know why anybody would think any differently. So inventive, so unique, so intuitive. And that voice, man. Gives me chills. What a talent, gone too soon!
Way too soon
🥺
"The Beatles, very early classic songlyric'Hold Me Tight',sent chills over me,:Mr.quite young teenage Lennon, sang romantically, with very young teenager Mr. McCartney, whom sounds like a little prince, with adult poetry'Being here with you tonight'. . .'8-7-2023'
My favorite voice in this world.
@@JohnLennon99791me too for sure🎉
Wait till you hear 'Hey You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'. Bitter, pessimistic, but so moving, & it really helps you know? To know that somebody else has been through the wringer, through the pain & humiliation of a love lost, but has survived. One of their greatest tracks for me.
I don't know if it's true, but I read that this song is a reference to Brian Epstein's secret life as a gay man in the 1960s.
Me too.
@@cosybully Yes, I remember reading that as well. He wrote it for Brian Epstein I believe when he came out to John. Being gay at that time was a terrible thing and John was trying to console him. For some reason I seem to have a Spain connection in my head. Maybe that's where they were at the time.
@@reggy_h It was also considered a crime in Britain, against the law, and you could go to prison for being gay....very very sad.
Yes, but you're jumping ahead a few albums... let him soak it all in. It's worth it!
John definitely had the edge on Paul at this stage.
I love that you appreciate Ringo. A left handed drummer playing right handed and Paul playing bass upside down, left handed. It's all these little weirdnesses (?) that made the brilliance shine so brightly. Chronologically is the best way with them. "Hard Day's Night" is deep joy and I am so looking forward to you hearing it. You should do the film, that' fabulous too.
I don't know if he had the "edge" or not, but his voice was certainly at its height, and it would remain there for another couple of years.
@@SpaceCattttt Well yes and no. I'm a Beatle maniac and purty as Paul was, John had my heart. Of course I love them all with a passion but am slightly, a bit, of a Lennon freak too. Maybe if we'd had him for the last 40 years I might have changed my view. But... I don't think so.
John DOMINATED the song writing into "Revolver".
@@jnagarya519 Agree.
@@DawnSuttonfabfour I suspect you picked up the fact that John was -- behind all the bluff and bravado -- exceedingly tender, even gentle (though society doesn't allow men to be).
I recall the scene near the end of "A Hard Day's Night" when he says to Paul's grandad, that he's "clean" -- the way he put it.
Just to be clear: they may have recorded "Hold Me Tight" for the 1st album, but that's not the version released on the 2nd album. They re-recorded it.
I think you'll be missing some crucial songs if you leave With The Beatles alone at this point. George's first composition Don't Bother Me is on the album, and John's Not A Second Time is definitely a good example of the progression from the first to the second album. Also, some of the covers reveal the band's influences - their cover of Smokey Robinson's You Really Got A Hold On Me shows how well they absorbed the gospel-oriented vocals of the original, and their well-known cover of Barrett Strong's Money is pretty heavy for 1963 rock & roll.
It's hard to think of a track that shows what a great feel for R&B they had more than their cover of You Really Got A Hold On Me.
"You Really Got a Hold on Me" used to literally make me breathless with desire when John said "tighter". Also Not a Second Time is friggin fantastic .
@@DawnSuttonfabfour IT sure DID, they did a better job on it than the original!
Ringo plays a right-handed drum kit left-handed...that's his unique sound...!
Please don't skip the rest of the album, you're going to miss some really great tracks
ABSOLUTELY! NO TRACK on ANY BEATLES' album should be skipped!! UH-UH!!
First Harrison track "Don't Bother Me" is on this album!
@@urbangrouse With an amazing bass line that changes with every verse.
And when you get there, Harrison's Think For Yourself is a must listen
@@bobguitarlearner8007it’s such an underrated song! Think for Yourself is my top 5 favorite
I mean. All 4 of them are fucking geniuses but the 4 of them as The Beatles is the ineffable MAGIC.
Truth.
Lennon was writing from childhood. In 1964 and 1965 he published two books of poetry, short-short story, and drawings. He was characterized as the "intellectual". He was certainly more the wordsmith than McCartney.
Ringo is a most unappreciated drummer of all. No fancy 5 minute drum solo - just one of the best drummer behind a band
Those Beatles reactions are awesome love watching someone discovering their evolution
Before the Beatles, it was almost unheard of for musical erformers to ever write their own songs.
“All I’ve Got To Do” might be the first great Beatles track. I’ve always loved it. Lennon raises the bar with that. All the elements are in place, and ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ is the first great leap and great Beatles album.
Hold. Key change in bridge. Not as simple as it seems.
You must listen to Don't Bother Me by George from this album
Before you move on to A hard day's night, I think it would be cool if you reacted to Don't bother me, which is the first song that George wrote. It's not really his best by any means but I've always quite liked it.
"DON'T BOTHER ME" is one of my FAVORITES of George's.
For his first time writing his own song, it's pretty good.
"All I've Got To Do" is one of the first songs I listened to from that album. Eventually I did the same thing as you. Going through the whole discography. I'm done, 0% regret it, I've started last year and The Beatles are by far my favourite band now!
Edit: You've missed (or it was taken down) "Do You Want To Know A Secret" and "A Taste Of Honey" from the first album as well as "She Loves You" and "I'll Get You".
YES, I noticed that TOO CAN"T MISS "SHE LOVES YOU" that was another VERY IMPORTANT song and how "YEAH YEAH YEAH" became their "catch phrase" back then (by the press) PLus I LOVE I'LL GET YOU" AND "A TASTE OF HONEY" I LOVE Paul's voice on that track.
Now multiply that feeling by at least 1,000 and you might get close to the heaven we enjoyed.
My generation had it all,my grandkids call us boomers the lottery winners of history.
All I've Gotta Do is a low key banger. Love the staccato guitar and you're so right, Lennon sounds awesome here. Lovely sentimental Lennon number. I also recommend Julia as a great showcase of his voice.
"Hold Me Tight" -- certainly original musically, and a fucking kick-ass band doing what they forged in Hamburg through 8 hours a night 7 days a week on stage.
You have to check out Don't Bother Me from this album! The first song written by George to be released, and it's pretty good!
Your commentary about John & Paul are pretty accurate. I love them both equally, but Paul in this period was a bit more cheery...John more cheeky! LOL...This will change & evolve . They BOTH will grow by leaps & bounds in the next few years. You CANNOT leave this album without listening to the very underrated George Harrison song, " Don't Bother Me."... Cheers.
Not a fair comparison, if Paul's song is from the year earlier.
Lennon had great respect for Paul's writing and talent, and he said so on many occasions.
I've always thought that John had the idea, the inspiration, the muse and then found the music to communicate it. McCartney seemed to come up with the great hooks and melodies and the lyrics followed
Lennon was also married with a child at this point. Although this is early on, still in the "could be a flash in the pan/love songs" era, John definitely was at a more mature point in his life. The whole rhythm background of Hold Me Tight is amazing.
married with a child? what do you mean?
@@JoaoGabriel-lk9cv John and Cynthia were married in August of 1962. Julian was born in April of 1963.
One aspect that is seldom mentioned is that the Beatles insisted on so many tracks on each album, and they quickly filled them up with originals. Two albums a year, 4 singles, and the singles weren't included on the albums. So many good songs.
Yes if released today it would have 'she loves you" and "I want to hold your hand " "This boy" On "with the Beatles"
The Beatles were destined to be great! They write in keys that are pleasing. They never wanted the songs to have any sameness, they alway added a twist to every song!
For me, both of these are GREAT numbers. With most other groups, songs like this would be released as singles because they're *very* strong, but for the Beatles and their ridiculous overabundance of brilliant material, they're left as deep cuts on an album.
I don’t know how Lennon didn’t like his voice it’s one of the best in music. Keep the Beatles coming brother.
✌🏻❤️
The Best!
I love what you are doing by contrasting the two songwriters! John will always be my favorite because he taps into my rebellious nature. but I love Paul's vibes as well!
yes, but don't ignore George please
Excellent breakdown, Syed. I stood on line at the local record store in Long Island, N.Y. for every Beatles release through to Magical Mystery Tour. My friends and I were immediately aware of the progression of their development. We were staggered by each new record.
By the time Revolver and Rubber Soul came out our teenage rock and roll joy turned into something more profound. It was quite extraordinary to live it in real time.
Syed - Too true about Ringo... in "All I've Gotta Do" just listen to his hi hat and snare pattern... It's stellar.. try and do it yourself it's so difficult.. I love how you have quickly picked up on their rapidly advancing maturity and development... As one podcast I listen to (shout out to Nothing Is Real) says... Beatle time moves faster than real time... When you look at what they packed into each day for the 7 years they were recording it's no surprise they were the band they still are...And had that much influence on EVERYTHING that came after them....!! Keep on Rocking and enjoying.
That is great that you called out ringo. It turns out to be the perfect choice for them.
After the Beatles break up, Lennon was critical of Paul writing too many silly love songs. Paul responded by writing a song called Silly Love Songs.
Please don't skip - there are some amazing covers on these albums - tracks like Till there was you will show you how broad their range is. Even if you don't do reactions to them, you should listen to the albums in their entirety - this is music history in the making.
Btw, Paul was always ahead on the music side, his understanding of melody and harmony was his biggest strength, whereas Lennon always had the edge when it came to content/subject matter and lyrics. They were both capable of switching that up though, which is what made them a great team.
John being a couple of years older than Paul is almost definitely a reason why he seems ‘ahead’ at this point. You’ve probably been told that the Beatles’s music matures and becomes more expansive when they did Rubber Soul in 1965, and I think Paul starts to come of age around that time. John was the ‘leader’ of the band at this time but after their manager Brian Epstein died, Paul seems to assume leadership and you can see how much his music develops. By the end they are equals, though I think Paul’s genius starts to be seen more in the later albums, just my opinion though
Being part of that era no one put too much thought into the music, It was a bit of fun and not written for posterity. That came a bit later.
I think Lennon was referring more to the later Beatles years, when McCartney started writing more "fruity" songs, as George Harrison described them once. Songs like "Honey Pie", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "Martha My Dear", "Hello, Goodbye" and "Your Mother Should Know" might be the types of songs John was referring to. Paul, of course, wrote many masterpieces in the later years too.
I think you're correct.
the muzak quote is from How do you Sleep, from 1971's Imagine. John is referencing Paul's solo work, in contrast to his own.
I was 9,living and growing up in South London when this album was released.
Literally changed everyone’s lives.
Our black and white world suddenly turned to vivid colour from that point on.
The swinging 60’s was finally here.
Cultural and musical phenomenons, the impact they had was unique and global.
Well put ❗ Brilliant talent. Changed a lot of lives 🎵
Two points. Firstly, even though either John or Paul was the main writer of a song they did work together to a lesser or greater extent of the process. Also, Paul was 20 when this album was made whereas John was 18 months older which is quite a lot at that age so more mature. Just a thought.
They were songwriting face to face at this stage. Not sure it’s fair to give either so much credit for a song. Both deserve credit for each song. ❤️❤️❤️
You need to do "Don't Bother Me" from this album, before you move on... It was the first song of George's that they recorded. A must listen!
All of these early Beatles songs are untouchable. Each song is so different and the harmony of these guys is off the charts. Thanks so much for reacting to so many Beatles tunes. Makes me very nostalgic 🍂🍃They are at the top of my favorite all time bands.🧡
I think you're getting too deep into the Lennon vs McCartney thing. It's a very reductive way of appeciating The Beatles.
This particular video also fails to appreciate the schedule The Beatles were working on. Hold Me Tight was an old song from 1961, brought back for With The Beatles. That is more likely to account for any difference you're hearing.
I agree. And that quote from Lennon about Paul’s music being Muzak was from a much later period when they were producing solo works. The early years were a marvel of collaboration and closeness with the band. To look for rivalry and contempt and comparisons in the early stuff is just misplaced.
One of their greatest early songs
I’m really enjoying this. Love hearing your takes on the songs and the dynamics between Lennon & McCartney. Cheers from Denmark
You’re right about the growth between their first and second albums , and remember we’re talking months!
THIS is WHY I wish ALL reactors would START diving into the Beatles catalogue from the beginning and going chronologically, THAT is how they will SEE the growth that happened very quickly over just 7 1/4 years!!
Spot on observations. Very insightful. I was 14 in 1964 so I’ve been a Beatles fan from day one. I enjoy your insights, especially the yin yang characterizations. You may have noticed Paul’s voice was a bit weak at this time, yet, his voice became really strong.
I’m really enjoying your reactions and stepping through their albums and evolution.
Paul's voice is "WEAK"??? are you SERIOUS?? Does he have to be screaming through every song like he did on "LONG TALL SALLY"? was THAT "weak" I am glad that EACH Beatle had a DIFFERENT VOICE. That is what made their HARMONIES so GREAT. I think that is why I didn't follow the stones as much, because it was ALWAYS Mick Jagger singing lead until this day!! I LIKE hearing different LEAD singers in a group, so that all their songs aren't sung with the SAME voice. Paul's voice was the most versatile of the Beatles and had the widest range in his vocals.
@@patticrichton1135 I think that a better description is that in a couple early songs, maybe Paul was self conscious and wasn't delivering as strong as he could. Naturally, he's a great singer. I appreciate your supporting Paul, John, and Mick.
I'll Get You is a very early song I don't think you've heard yet. It's one of my favorites of their early songs. Good old rock-n-roll, Lennon/McCartney style!!!
Paul's bass and Ringo's drumming excellently complement Lennon's lyrics. George is a steady hand.
I spent a week on a scuba vacation on Maui in November of 2021. After the morning dives and lunch I spent the afternoons by the pool listening to the Beatles albums in order, starting with Meet the Beatles. I was in the 8th grade in 1964 when the Beatles hit the US.
You should do this whole LP.
To be correct, the released version (this version) of "Hold Me Tight" was recorded mid way thru the sessions for THIS album (With The Beatles). Some have critisized this song, but you can't deny the power of it due to the astounding guitar figure played by George Harrison - that really MAKES this song!!
its a killer riff
John only said those things about Paul because John thought Paul had subtly dissed him on the Ram album and the single Too Many People. Although Lennon could spit out venom on many people, he was notoriously thin skinned. So, when someone he always considered a brother and best friend, he was hurt and raged against him in the song How Do You Sleep? Thankfully, they made up a few years later and became friends again. In fact, in 76 or 77, whenever SNL producer, Lorne Michaels, humorously offered the Beatles $3,000 to appear on SNL (this was right after someone had offered them $50,000,00 to play one concert). Paul was visiting John at his Dakota apartment and they were smoking pot and watching SNL So when they heard the offer, they giggled and said let's go down there. Sadly, they didn't because that would have been amazing because I was watching that show. You should listen to John Lennon's last interview with Rolling Stone where he goes over a lot of the Beatles songs and he praises Paul profusely. Surprisingly, his two favorite Paul songs were two ballads from Revolver, Here, There and Everywhere and For No One. He also calls Hey Jude one of Paul's masterpieces.
Regarding John being “darker” - a perfect example is John’s contribution to the lyrics of Paul’s song “Getting Better.” Paul says “It’s getting better all the time.” John responds “It can’t get no worse.” That’s them in a nutshell.
We want more!
Lennon biggest criticism of McCartney was that he used to write "Granny Music" Paul was often influenced by the music his own father used to play, and often brought in elements of pop music from earlier generations.
FUNNY how we TEENAGE GIRLS then (LIKE ME) NEVER thought Paul wrote "GRANNY" music, NEVER even HEARD the term then. To US that would have been music from the 1920's when OUR Grandparents were young. We DIDN"T ANALYZE and COMPARE voices or styles of ANY of the BEATLES back then. WE LOVED EVERY SINGLE TRACK. Otherwise, they wouldn't have BECOMES SO HUGE and start "BEATLEMANIA" among us fans, IF we had been THAT "CRITICAL" of each song and singer. . And ANYWAY, I AM a "granny" now, and what is wrong with "granny" music from ANY period. LOTS OF GREAT music written in decades from the turn of the 19th century into the 20th, and even before.
@@patticrichton1135 and that's the music that John called Granny Music. Songs like "Martha, My Dear" and "Honey Pie", and stuff like that really got under Lennon's skin.
Just love your reviews/opinions.....great job
Ringo was definitely the best musician in the Beatles in those days.
Love the commentary, as usual. I was a HUGE Beatles fan right from their debut on the Ed Sullivan show, and a lot of the things you say are things I thought at the time but didn't know how to express. Good job!
Hey I love ‘em both - enjoy the ebb and flow! As a body of work, unsurpassed
You can tell everything you need to know about a person by who their favorite Beatle is.
Your opinion may shift as you get further into their catalog because in my opinion there is a point where Paul eclipses John. However, I think you're spot on at this point. John is pushing the band forward and will continue to do so for a couple albums. Around Rubber Soul/Sgt Pepper they may be on an even keel.
Yes I think from revolver on. Rubber soul is Johns last true dominance
When these songs came out in the US it was in the album "Meet the Beatles" in Jan 1964. The US (Capital Records) didn't release the exact same album early on. I would add that John was critical of nearly everything, including his voice. He also told George Martin, years later - after they had broke up, that he would redo all of their songs. He just never was satisfied. It must have been tough to be John. Having Paul, George and Ringo kept John a bit more balanced, but he definitely provided the edge.
Opening chord by George is an augmented five chord. How many bands were using those jazz chords back then or even now? Nada.
Love your reactions - you're really listening. Keep in mind, that besides R&B they listened to a lot of the "girl groups" of the 60s: The Shirelles, The Crystals, many others.
John was said to say to Paul “ Please not another ‘ lovey dovey ‘ Love song ! Honestly how long can you keep singing these nice songs before getting bored . You cant appeal to the young teenage girls forever . I think the nice thing with the Beatles is their music and songwriting was totally unique a very tight band and always exploring new directions with George Martin’s guidance as well they were very disciplined to the work ethic
This is an excellent channel. You’ve a long way to go in the ocean you’ve chosen to explore … hardly tasted Jimi Hendrix who incidentally Paul helped launch in London, I believe … Rory Gallagher … Frank Zappa … Captain Beefheart … Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, the founders of punk … Santana at their peak … loads more Dylan … Duane Allman at his brief peak … absolutely no hurry. Enjoy the trip ~ I am.
Completely agree with you on Lennon being ahead of McCartney here. Paul's song is very Everly brothers, wheres John's has a unique sound to it.
Beautiful reaction. Spot on.
Haven't heard these songs for a very long time, but they do bring back some fond memories of first hearing them. Still my nostalgic favourite Beatles album is "Beatles For Sale". Our family was on holidays staying with my one of my uncles family over Christmas 1964 and the album had just been released. One of my cousins had just bought it and was playing it on rotation for the 2 weeks we were there, so I got to hear it a lot. I had just turned 12, they were a bit older, so I was very impressed. I am sure I could still recite all of the words of those songs.
Good vid pal keep it up 👍
Hold Me Tight is just a hidden JEM!!!! Especially when John sings the low 5th on 'Tonight' during the chorus.
Paul was 'the pretty boy' so did the popular A sides with John doing the 'gutsy' B sides. A generalisation but basically true..
I can't be the only one who loves the Across the Universe (film) adaptation of Hold Me Tight.
Good observation. I would (don’t need to do a video) but listen to George’s first song - don’t bother me. I wanna be your man (Lennon/McCartney) but sung by ringo - and a song they gave to the Rolling Stones ! Also while covers, “til there was you” and “money” are excellent. And the B side to I want to hold your hand - “this boy”.
All My Loving is my fave Beatles song of all time, as is on this album.
I have always loved John Lennon's input into the Beatles & Plastic Ono Band. A big part of my musical education.
I'm grateful & flattered that a guy with your background is enjoying this "New" music, but mate You can't move on to "A Hard Day's Night" whithout listening to "don't brother me/Little child" , "i wanna be your man/not second time"
Very impressed ❤.
Both Lennon and McCartney were great songwriters and you could argue all day about who is better, but in regards to John being "a little ahead" at this point of The Beatles, don't forget that John is nearly two years older than Paul, and that may have been a factor in their early writing. Looking forward to more of your very insightful reactions - they are always worthwhile and thought provoking!
I'm also a John fan, especially post Beatles. However, 2 of my favorite Beatles songs were written by George and Paul respectively. I think John was simply a bit more mature at this stage. He was 2 years older than Paul. 3 years older than George. At their age of the time that can be quite a difference maker. Ringo was the oldest.
Both of these songs are major-league PANTY-DROP songs! John's super-smooth croon and Paul's "punkish"-roguish persona he is playing in Hold Me Tight are both songs that definitely drove the girls crazy! I love Hold Me Tight's "breakdown" section, where Ringo goes to the tom-toms (with hand-claps in the background) and Paul keeps up the smolder with the singing --- totally excellent Rock/Soul music! "All I've Got to Do" is a better song but they both have their charms.
For the uninitiated about the 1960s decade world, "Muzak" proliferated as background music for folks to listen to whilst doing something boring. It was referred to as "elevator music".
We have the same phenomenon occurring in our supermarkets with (now renamed) "Mood music" filtering our shopping experience whilst dealing with inflation-bloated food prices.
i JUST LOVED THE BEATLES TEAM OF 6
The first Beatles LP was recorded in a hurry, and included many tracks from their club repertoire at that time, and only a few originals.
Fantastic
I’ve always been more drawn to Lennon as well. Throughout, not just early on.
Wait! No! You're not going to do anymore from With The Beatles? Did you do the who thing? I want/need you to do John's darkly magnificent "Not a Second Time"!! It's an awesome deep-cut/dark horse song! Please check it out!
You like Lennon, another likes Paul = biggest band in history. By the way John loved Paul's early stuff , it was Paul solo songs he crapped on.
For A Hard Days Night Album the 4 tracks I would suggest are,
Things We Said Today
And I Love Her
Can’t buy Me Love
I Should Have Known Better
Tough only picking 4 tracks from this incredible album!
If I Fell
I’ll Be Back
2 more!
Great to see you clicking with the early sound more and more Syed. I'd urge you to reconsider on moving forward so fast though - as someone else pointed out, you'd be missing out on Not a Second Time and George's first song, Don't Bother Me. The covers on this record are also far superior to the ones on Please Please Me, but if you'd rather skip those I still think it's important to hear all the originals - just my 2c!
Whenever I-I-I-I 🎶see the title 'All I Gotta Do ', I inevitably think of 'Thank You Girl', regardless of who wrote it. I too have always had a far greater affinity for, and connection with Lennon, despite my appreciation for McCartney's musical gifts and proficiency and output. I dunno, roots, baby. I'm also reminded of 'I'll Be Back'.
'Hold Me Tight', unless I'm very much mistaken is an illustration of Lennon's often claimed and lauded facility with the bridge, or "middle-eight", as they called it.
Since their earliest days in the British media-sphere, when I was a little shaver, years from actually needing to shave 😅🪒, I was more drawn to Lennon 's delivery and emotional viewpoint. 😊
Does it get any better? Stick around and find out just how. You know it does. They continually top themselves and each other. My recommendations? 'I Dig A Pony', 'And Your Bird Can Sing', the new theme for the Beatles TV cartoon series in 1966!! An absolute mind-bending revelation, for the twin guitar leads by George and Paul at the time, and a persistent back-of-mind puzzle as to subject matter and inspiration in the years since. Great reactions, mate, keep diving and breathing it in. Beatle gills, activate!! 😂🐟🦸♂️❤🕊
It's superlatively successful songwriting because it achieves its goal.
It's tricky to think about them as 2 discreet songwriters on these early records. At this point they were still writing very closely together. These were all very much collaborations.
I think Lennon was a year or two older than Paul. As you move through their albums You can hear the studio technicians slowly figuring out how to record electric bass and drums etc. there was a lot of innovative talent involved in making these records
Hold Me Tight - the style of play, and guitaring is underrated. It was heavy for '63. Put an distortion or fuzz on the guitar pattern and you can hear what became heavy rock in the late 60's through to the 90's. Especially down into the dark chords during the transition to the slower rhythm...which in itself was new to rock n roll music, something The Beatles invented and made popular (I've heard transitions in the beginning of songs, but never in the middle with early rock n roll). You can hear in many future Macca songs, how he transitions back and forth through speeds and rhythms. Kinda became his thing. This songs just might be his first one!
I've been listening to the Beatles since they first hit in America in 1964 and I've really come to love Lennon's contributions to the group the most. Don't get me wrong, Paul is a genius songwriter in his own right but there is a rawness and honesty to John's voice and delivery. In the beginning, to my young ear John's vocals sounded very raw and unpolished compared to the crooners of the time. But over time I came to love that rawness. In fact Lennon's work on his last solo album Double Fantasy is some of his best work IMHO. I think McCartney was a pure songwriter while Lennon was more of a bad attitude rock and roller. BTW Hold Me Tight has some parts that sound like the tape machine was slowing down and everything goes flat from time to time which still grates on my ears.
There was an article out some years back asking musicians from back then about the Beatles. Some didn't like them, most did to one degree or another - but the majority agreed that Lennon was the best musician in the group.
Very good analysis of the two writers as in John and Paul. The great thing about the Beatles and McCartney and Lennon is the differences made them.
That darker side to Lennon would be too much to have such a wide appeal, whereas with Pauls writing they hit almost everyone, hence they why they became so massive, and was able to progress in their writing together as the albums went by, with George adding his brilliance as they went along.
You have really good insight, Syed. Lennon had a darker outlook on life, while McCartney was more upbeat. And yes, Lennon was more advanced at this point in the band's career. Remember that John (and Ringo) was 2 years older than Paul (and George). So John would have been 23 when All I've Got To Do was written/recorded (late 1963). Paul would have been 20 when Hold Me Tight was written/recorded (early 1963). I've always thought of Lennon as the 'tortured artist' and McCartney as the 'musical genius technician'. It was Paul that spent hours working with George Martin on the production of their albums. John didn't have the patience or temperament for it.
And I love your insights into Ringo's playing. The guy is really inventive. Love his playing.
Lennon was definitely the darker songwriter but he could write romantic songs too He did throw daggers that he later regretted He didn't even like his own songs or voice
All I've Got To Do, so great. The harmonies and his voice! Similar song for Harmonies is "Yes It Is".
You've got it pretty spot on, Lennon Lyrics, brooding hard songs, McCartney Melodies, mostly feel good songs. Later you will see McCartney develop his songwriting, lyrics but mostly melodies and harmonies. He sort of takes the lead and becomes a song writing machine.
