One day is now; I just don’t care for that style of music (or hip hop!). I’m wired for rock, the Deep Purple, Sabbath, eighties hair metal, etc. type of rock.
This stuff sounds like it belongs in the soundtrack for “Pleasantville.”
I always appreciate Fil’s objectivity in the different styles of music he capitalizes. He’s obviously a rocker, but can appreciate other styles. Personally I love this kind of music along with many other styles. Good job on the analysis too!

No auto-tune, anywhere. You're right that youngsters don't know that live bands can sound as good as their records, because today's musicians lack the skills.

it was absolutely the destiny of the tremeloes to cover "baby" and make it their own. i have always loved the live sound of that record and I cannot imagine a catchier melody!

One thing people may not be aware of is in that era there were so many places to play (they didn't pay well but they paid). Add to this the fact that most of the gigs were where people danced. I'm of that era and I could literally go to 6 dances a week and later when I was playing I could play 6 nights a week.
So when you look at those numbers it was just so much easier to learn the newest hits + some golden oldies. Your goal as a band at that time was to see how many times you could get someone to go buy a drink. and keep them dancing

I’ve always been a fan of bands with quality vocals, and the Tremeloes are a great example. There’s something magical about a band that can produced the beautiful sound of voices joined in perfect harmony....there are few who can do it, particularly live. And, as you pointed out, singing in multiple part harmony can be extremely difficult, not to mention playing instruments at the same time. A good choice for one of your spot-on reviews, thanks Fil.
I grew up listening to these guys. Watching their videos today is a treat. it really stands out that these guys had fun on stage. It is infectious!

I love their music. I watched their videos over and over again already. I had teenage sisters who had me listen to the radio. 60s and 70s. I remember 'Yellow River'.

I am scanning through your back catalogue and was stunned to see this piece on the Tremeloes. 1st. I've always loved the Tremeloes (and many other British Invasion bands). But, and 2nd, there is only one other reaction to this band that I can find on RUclips. That is a pity because they were so so good. This song is a gem, as was the Cat Stevens penned beauty, "Here Comes My Baby', and "Yellow River', and even their cover of "Proud Mary'' . I can tell that your analysis is not only intricate and detailed but enthusiastic. You like these guys too and that cheers my bones. Thank you.

Thanks for making it possible for us to see a great live version. Definitely a great job of making it possible for us to see and hear a superb live version of it. It was all over AM radio play summer of '67, especially when we were on summer vacation as it was released in May of 1967. Yet another great Bob Gaudio composition. As a smooth, melodic piece of love "message music" (like To Sir With Love) I had always wished you'd analyze it, never actually thinking you would as there's no awesome guitar work, which you tend to favor. Thanks so very much for taking me back to my younger youthful days of the British invasion. You, sir, are so very varied in your taste and your ability to appreciate all the great early, classic music pieces. So very awesome of you to present this classic love song!
Fil, as you know, the 60s-80s were witness to a plethora of great voices and tunes, lyrics and singers. I LOVE THIS GROUP. AND THIS SONG. Also Turtles, Little Rascals, Dave Clark 5, Four Seasons, the Vogues, The Association Marmalade, Vanity Fair, Mamas and Papas, of course, the Beatles, and on and on. So many great melodies!!!! Thanks for highlighting all of them.
The Tremeloes we’re so solid vocally I always thought they were strictly vocalists, like the Four Seasons. Nice to learn they were much more.
All the 4 Seasons played instruments except Frankie Vallli even though they usually used a backing track for the instruments or a live band. The Jersey Boys stage show didn't touch on this. They were strictly vocalists.

Born in '69 ,I missed out first hand the incredible musicians of the decade , but by my teens ,it was the 1960's music that made me want to play guitar. 👍👍👍

What an auditory cortex you have young man. Your points made plus the lack of adequate and separate monitor mix (in the ear) back then. I teach my produced bands attempting harmony to sing slightly sharp if they get lost.
Brilliant analysis. This band was so tight and accomplished. I didn't pay much attention to them back in the day, although I was the right age (16 in 67) to track them. I really loved Here Comes My Baby, but it's only since I have gotten old that I've rediscovered them and seen how good they were. Four great singers, four good musicians. Thanks for highlighting them. They deserve to be remembered.

I think this is a good idea, makes sense with the vagueness of the copyright algorithms. Folk music in the 50's / 60's was a staple on TV and radio, lots of groups like the Four Freshmen, Four Seasons, The Tokens, Four Tops (see the pattern :D ). I can see why they were chosen over the Beatles in 1962, more bankable. Thanks for the analysis, always stop on.

This was the very first single I purchased at the age of 12 with my pocket money all those years ago. I still have the single in my record collection. Makes me feel old. Great band. Thanks Fil.
Released in 67, great year! I was born at the end of 67. Totally enjoy the Tremelos and this one of my favs.
I have this video in my music library. Silence Is Golden was the first "slow song" I ever danced to at a sock hop. It always made me cry (I was still a baby...).

I think the Tremeloes were the first band I ever saw live, in Harrogate, probably 67 or 68. Another great analysis Fil.
The Association is another band with a similar style and harmonies. They had a number of hits... Never My Love, Cherish, Windy, Along Comes Mary... And the whole band sings on most of their songs! Good stuff!

@@oldermusicloverWho are you referring to ? The Wrecking Crew never played on the Tremeloes' records. Only the English groups that came over here used The Wrecking Crew. The Tremeloes recorded in England. The Wrecking Crew didn't travel to England. I don't remember the Tremeloes ever being on TV over here. I was 22 in 1967 so I would have remembered. The Wrecking Crew basically worked with American artists. DC5 haters try to say that the Wrecking Crew worked with the DC5 but they didn't. Dave Clark's records were made in England.
@@wesleycook7687 No the crew never worked as a whole on the UK songs but I do know via some books one of who Hal Blaine wrote that from time to time some of the guys were flown into a session in the UK one of the main drummers in the UK was the late Bobby Graham he in fact was the drummer on the early Dave Clark Five song although he was never given credit. also some of the song, like Because were NOT written by Dave but he took the money and ran

@@oldermusiclover I knew a DC5 hater would surface. That's the reason I made the comment. No, Dave was in the sound booth during recording. He used session drummers but Graham wasn't good enough. I've heard him play. He's nothing special. Dave played live on their live gigs of course. Sir Paul Mccartney said so. The DC5 played live in 62 and 63 and they had to be good to get a recording contract and then knock the Beatles out of number one. They were Ed Sullivan's first choice but they didn't know who Sullivan was since the show didn't air in England. That was a year before the Beatles. No bull. I read that in the History Of The Dave Clark Five on U Tube. As for the Association, I don't know. Maybe. It would have been a USA recording. The Wrecking Crew didn't travel to England. The bands came here. There were 5 drummers in the Wrecking Crew. Don't remember any of them except Sandy Nelson. Bobby Graham ? When was he a member.
The trems were a great sixties seventies band.for me as a teenager then it was the trems and the hollies.fabulous

I have a promo pic sleeve for a Tremoloes and Hollies with the heading , "There is room for both at the top !". It was a colored vinyl single by both Epic Records acts. One side was Silence is Golden and Carrie-Anne on the other side.

I spent an afternoon with Rick W. in the home of one of the Rubbettes - just chatting. He played with them for a while after Tony Thorpe left. I learned quite a lot about their background.

Loved how Chip went to tenor range after the key change. meanwhile the CBS single had a lot of sybllience on it, which is less present on this beat club performance.
Thank you so much for doing this, my family member was Allen Blakley, I grew up with the Trems. I always went to there shows with my mother. We followed the Trems everywhere. It was such a shame that Dave Munden passed recently. Most of the main members have left now. Seems Chip is the only one still singing. This group should have been larger than they were. They should have had more success. Well done for this video and recognizing them.. Make me so happy to see Allen and Dave again..

Again. So sorry youtube is messing with you, but thank you for featuring The Tremeloes. I know they're particular style isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I have eclectic taste and I love the uniqueness of their sound. Not a lot of bands can perform with this type of quality. The high notes above the other three vocalists makes a fascinating effect and the lyrics of the song are beautiful as well and i feel that their sound captures the emotion of the song subject.

Totally agree about the vocal harmonies. I've not had a chance to see The Tremeloes play live, but I do see Rick from time to time and it's always great hearing stories about the band, especially during the recording of Silence Is Golden.

Good job with the work around. Definitely worth including this great band. I well remember this song blaring through my radio back during the "Summer of Love."
I was into psychedelic rock and folk that year but I remember hearing it and of course by the four Seasons. When the latter sang it all they had to focus on was singing. I'm impressed that the Tremelos could juggle it all so well. I also appreciate your ingenuity with this. Thanks for opening my eyes and mind to new discoveries!
Another note for the Tremeloes is the song, Yellow River. They were offed the song by Jeff Christie. They completed the music for the song but didn't feel right about the vocal. The song eventually went back to Jeff to sing the vocals with the groups music backing him. As in every music story there are a few other twists to the story. But that's for another day. LoL

Great comeback, Fil, to yesterdays debacle with the copyright stuff. I find it odd that we can watch the vid in its entirety on RUclips but you could not show it in parts as you analyzed it! Certainly glad you found a way to circumvent "whatever" and present this fabulous performance. I always enjoyed hearing The Tremeloes back then but never got to see them perform live. Another great song that they did was Christie’s Yellow River- I think they actually acted as the backup band on Christie’s recording of it if I’m not mistaken.
Allen Blakley’s of the Trems brother Michael Played the drums on this track, was awesome to see him on here, all are family…

I remember buying when I was a kid, "Here Comes My Baby". The various voices in the background used as effect was unique.
Great video. You might want to look at a similar group from the same time period called the Fortunes. Great songs and vocal harmonies and they're still performing.
Notice the bass amp in front of the vocalists and the minimal stage volume. That had to help also.
I think we should confer an honorary degree on Professor Fil, for his diligence in bringing to the masses an understanding of the genres and techniques that make music an enriching experience.
I’ve loved the Tremeloes since I was a kid in the 1960s. I remember when they were on an episode of The Flintstones.
Hey Fil, I hit the thumbs-up button BEFORE I watched the video because I already knew I was going to enjoy your analysis! When I first heard this song in 1966 it just completely knocked me out. I loved it and even knew right up front that I was not hearing a Beach Boys single. When I acquired my own wheels (with tape 8-track deck) I always had this song ready so I could sing along to it.

When people dream about the sixties, this is why. Four-part harmonies, all playing instruments, touring constantly, primitive gear, all capable of lead vocals, hundreds of miles a day, sometimes and often in the legendary Transit. Chip Hawkes is the nicest guy possible, and Rick W is a very fine player. They were, effectively, Christie, who played "Yellow River." Also, the contracts were often dreadful and the bands incredible tired - Edinburgh tonight, Plymouth tomorrow. On occasions, when they were touring the UK with Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, Tich would help out with the higher register vocals.

The Trems really are a British institution and always were highly professional. Yes, R & B (when it was just that - rhythm and blues) die hard that I was then, I would curl my lip at the this group's work, but now I can appreciate them, just as you say.
I haven't heard (as I can remember) the demo tape that the Tremeloes sent to Decca, but (like many) I have heard the one from the Beatles. I hazard to state that the former was probably a far more professional piece of work and more in line with public tastes at that time; so who then can blame Dick Rowe for his choice?

“Silence is Golden” by The Tremolos, also got a lot of air play in the USA on the “adult” stations, which usually wouldn’t touch any “teen” music (which was how rock & roll records were categorized at the time).
It is strange that this song is all over RUclips now, especially several live versions. Great band, great song, and some very good information from Fil.
I have No recollection of The Four Season's Release, of this song, and I was living in that time, and enjoyed their music. It was the Tremelo's version, of Silence is Golden, that I loved.

I’ve always loves this song, but now whenever I hear it I’m reminded of the scene in “Love Actually” when Colin Firth’s character is blathering on about “Silence is Golden” and how it’s a Tremeloes song but originally by the Four Seasons and then begins to hum the falsetto part and fails miserably. There’s an indication of how difficult that is to sing (and how you can look like a complete idiot when trying to impress a woman).

I was 5 when this came out and it was one of my favorite songs! It's kinda funny I just went to a Korn and A&C concert this week, and after listening to this music I still love this song and this group, incredible music and talent always stay the test of time!!! Yup I was singing along at 2:30 am!
