OSRIC is really damn good tbh also free, can get at cost POD from LULU, Its a great starter for people for a low or no cost still missing alot of stuff but its great to run some games with no problems :-) I just got AD&D books but this is still very useful with the books for many of the charts alone tbh. Again doesnt have everything but its still very good.

OSRIC, the choice for smart DMs who realize D&D has been more about selling books since 2nd and not really about the real D&D. OSRIC is essentially the better organized version of 1st AD&D. All you get out of the 3 core books you can get still today, is a dose of nostalgia. So go ahead, download OSRIC and replace the cover with maybe the image of the original DMG. It might make you feel better.

I literally got Osric 1E for $56 in VG+ condition in Ebay auction last week after playing Basic Fantasy and White Box. I picked this up because I no longer have my original AD&D books, and theres no way I was paying the prices people want. Even for the reprint versions would cost @ $100+. That was my reason

18:42 "there's NEVER been a indexing that includes DMG, MM and PHB". Rules Cyclopedia says, "Hi! we did this with BECM"😂😂

Thanks so much for this video! I am trying to get back into 1e AD&D, and I am happy to have a copy of OSRIC. You're video does a great job of capturing some of the cool features of this adaptation (restatement) of the game.

Just want to caution. The softcover is THICK, but as a softcover that spine IS going to crack. Either get the hardcover, or get it printed out as spiral bound. You will thank me later.

I printed mine and had FedEx office bind it with heavy duty spiral. Makes it much easier to deal with.

@@Classic_DM There is a cool option. You get the holes punched, but forgo the spiral and weave up and down from top to bottom and back down to the bottom with cord or something similar like twine. Use a large needle to thread it. You end up with a very simple VERY secure binding. Anything from 100 to 500 pages is easy. I do this with everything other than books I need to lay flat.

I heard that WotC was thinking about renaming the game to Dungeons & Mephits....😅

The are doing a kickstarter supposedly in early 2025 for v3, so might be worth getting the free PDF and waiting for the KS to get the hardback. Likely licensing issues first and foremost, but new formatting, some extra items, more tutelage style. I still think reading the originals is the way to go, just to tap into Gygax's brain, but this could be the book at the table for brevity.
Probably not worth re-buying a hardback but for new buyers a great option. It's not exactly like the original AD&D with all the fiddly bits and classes, but likely easier to grok than the original books for newcomers. Original books or OSRIC, the real benefit is having a ruleset with a direct, easy way to play some of the finest modules/content for the hobby that have become classics. One theoretically would never run out of content made for 1e.

Does OSRIC contain the Encounter Tables from the back of the DMG?? I may just have to buy the DMG.

It does, but sadly they forgot to include wetland encounters. Otherwise, it's very comprehensive
