I don’t understand the hate. The man’s work on Doctor Who was and is brilliant and it left an indelible mark on me and I hope my child. How could you deny the magnificence of that era of the show?? As well as on Sherlock?? I find them both to be two of the best, if not THE best, television shows I’ve ever had the privilege of being able to enjoy. It’s almost like there are people whose soul purpose is to provide the opposition, and they don’t speak from any real solid ground. I mean, creating an arc about the time traveling baddie-ender who loses his companions to time, who then falls in love with a psychopath sent to kill him while their time-streams flow in opposite directions…that’s inspired. All while playing out the love story of Amy and Rory, whose child ends up being that love interest…that’s beyond reproach in my book. It went international and the show reached every demographic. Unfortunately it has devolved into pandering of all demographics and seemingly misplaced its soul. Hopefully that is only temporary. Writing is difficult as it is, but they took a show that’s 50+ years old and made it new again and spun new stories and storylines, while staying within 99% of the lines that been drawn prior. Fantastic. All while simultaneously making Sherlock who has the same international prestige and success. Come on man, get real, this guy is an international treasure and if it were up to me he’d have been honored with an American citizenship for blessing our children with the era of his work he made. Even as a man in his thirties these shows helped me grow up and got me through dark times, so I, for one, am truly grateful and seriously chalk the hate up to people either venting their negative energy somewhere they don’t comprehend or believe is a target that means much to them, or they’re standards are so high they’re going to be constantly disappointed. I hope Moffat and Gatiss come out with as many shows as they can muster so long as they enjoy it, for as long as they can.
Mr Moffat is one of the funniest and wittiest writers out there. Him along with Mark Gatiss and Steve Thompson have made of BBC Sherlock one of the cleverest shows of modern TV. So much detail and so much thought put into it; truly brilliant! I'm lucky enough to have met them and I can say they're also very humble and grateful for their fans. Thanks for your work!
He's extremely witty with words. You could really see the wittyness in the dialogues he has written in sherlock and doctor who comes from steven moffat way of talking too. I find him funny but a different kind of funny. He's not a stand up comedian funny but more of a naturally funny
I just finished watching S10E11. I wonder what Moffat was thinking when he got that question.... Congratulate to Moffat! Brilliant episode! And thank you!
such a brilliant and humble man! I am really grateful for each and every one of his stories! They made me love Doctor Who and his and Marks version of Sherlock is just off the charts brilliant! So glad he got into the business :) (and I'm glad he gives interviews every once in a while, because he's so witty :D :D )
Dr. Who never made me hide behind the couch when I grew up, I destroyed the tapes by rewinding and watching over and over. The show inspired me to get into maths and science at all levels from chemistry to quantum physics.
Ross Betts Yes I know that one too. I am a syfy lover and hallmark lover weird right. One of my all time fav tv show and movies that came from it called "Alien Nation."
I'm glad he had the guts to say the writer is the most important person in creating the shows. Everyone else is very skilled at executing their craft and making it come alive but it's nothing without a well written script. The writer is the one coming up with all the brilliant characters and stories but they are often the most unknown out of everyone working on it. It's not that everyone else doesn't deserve praise for doing a great job but writers really don't get any credit for what they do.
Just noticed his comment about Mark Gatiss saying "you love the BBC but don't expect it to love you back" (35 mins) is kind of the line they used for River referring to The Doctor in Husbands of River Song (just before his Hello Sweetie line). I love that they weave lots of real life stuff into the show!
Everyone is about to miss Moffat and regret every criticism. Chibnall's writing is a disaster and now all of Moffat's critics will get exactly what they deserve, boring witless Chibnall Dr Who.
33:36 I will not tarnish the memory of such great days with the regret that they are over. I will be happy that they happened to me of all people! Stupid, rubbish me.
As someone from the states, I don't understand why people are freaking out about the BBC losing funding. Are there no affluent people/production companies that could fund it? It's nice that the government chooses to fund it but you can't argue they have a duty to.
phhhft, he says students at Oxford don't need his advice because they're already so accomplished for getting into the school but he couldn't be more wrong. They haven't been successful in a career yet and don't truly know what it entails. You can't really until you spend many years in the workforce. Many have accomplished less than any working adults and have very skewed realities of the world and workplace at that age. Advice from someone who has spent decades in the workforce and been successful at it has a lot of advice and experience to pass on to College students.
Well geniuses are often rubbish at everyday things. Which is understandable, their mind is already filled with absolutely brilliant things others could never, not in a hundred years could think of. There's no more room for reverse parking and such.
I have to respectfully disagree on the point about not being able to control how good you are. Life's all about improving. But I totally agree on the cheating point!
At 32:05, when Moffat was asked the question about regenerating Doctor Who and Sherlock, I feel like he should've given credit to Russell T. Davies as it was really Davies that regenerated Doctor Who; he should also have mentioned Mark Gatiss for Sherlock.
It would cost much more money to have species back which hadn't been in the new series as there need to be so many design decisions that go into it - especially now that we broadcast in HD/4K. It would be a bit of a waste of budget to have all that and only for a few shots.
what the hell... it looks like the audience is entirely made up of like 16 year olds. I don't remember that in Oxford Union interviews I've watched before.
I find the reason a lot of men appear to be catering to feminists as they approach middle age is because they actually develop the ability to see life from other peoples points of view. This is often from having a daughter.

I think Steven Moffat is my spirit animal. He gets so much hate but he is actually just freaking brilliant and extremly adorable
Yess right!!!
"Hate"?? Hes arguably the most coveted writer in Britain.
I'm imagining you are American.
Same.

Just wanted to thank you Mr Moffat for all those wonderful episodes.
I watched the Dr from the very first episode..
Yours were phenomenal...thank you.

Writing is so exciting by itself but watching people talking about how exciting it is makes it all so much more amazing!
34:58 Now I know where that River Song quote from the Christmas special came from!
😢
Dr. Who never made me hide behind the couch when I grew up, I destroyed the tapes by rewinding and watching over and over. The show inspired me to get into maths and science at all levels from chemistry to quantum physics.
Ross Betts Do you remember the American television show "Quantum Leap?"
Kkoreatheempress AyHung all too well, gave rise to a few thoughts as well as Sliders

Watch Seeds of Doom, absolutely terrifying. Scariest story of anything from New or Classic
The master of dialogue and speeches is showing his skills even in this talk😂
absolute legend

i could listen to him for hours. thank you for some amazing stories you have been the best Doctor Who writer ever
He will always be right besides the greats like Eric Saward, Terrence Dicks, Robert Holmes and Russell T. Davies.
@Cryer24597 you realize that someone can have an opinion right
Thanks for all the nightmares, 2005 - 2017
Great and funny story about where the Weeping Angels idea came from! Loved this interview a lot!

My favorite TV writer of all times
This guy is a genius. A rubbish one, but a genius none the less!
" 28:50 Genesis of Cybermen" that's what they are doing for the s10 finale!
Thanks Dan
I can only imagine how much fun Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss must have when they are together. Such fun and brilliant minds.
33:36 I will not tarnish the memory of such great days with the regret that they are over. I will be happy that they happened to me of all people! Stupid, rubbish me.
19:40 "Let's say it's an axis of criminal activity and bizarre, futuristic alien malice" Wonderful.

more Sherlock!! you are not rubbish. We depend on you.

28:44 did this guy just give steven moffat the idea for capaldi's last few episodes?
Doubtful. The episodes would have been written and partially filmed by this point.
And hes referencing a previous quote anyways
When do the questions start?
After the 'writer's' talk.
About 21 minutes in.
Adam Darren Why the inverted commas around writer's? Are you implying he didn't write the talk?
I wish I was rubbish like Mr Moffat
"not fear that will genuinely harrow the soul forever" - don't cremate me scandal
Wonder if he’ll come back now rtd is also coming back
yes what is Steven Moffats full address pls
A very lovely man.
0:49 nice to meet you, Finn Moffat!
Steve is a great guy, i feel close enough to where i call him "steve"
40:33 I don't know about you, but that seems like quite a rude question to me.

I'm not sure if he ripped the 'driving his pregnant wife to hospital' story from Peep Show or vise versa
Is it me or is he acting like the doctor. I mean like the doctor in real life ?
He is the Doctor in real life. He's the only real Doctor.
