- Celebrities have reacted with a mixture of shock and anger after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars.
Comedian Rock, who was presenting an award, made an on-stage joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss, which is due to alopecia, saying “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”
Smith walked up on stage and struck Rock before returning to his seat and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”
Smith later apologised in a tearful best actor acceptance speech, declaring: “Love will make you do crazy things”.

Will laughs until his wife throws shade! This family has delusions of grandeur and need deep therapy and anger management. His interview talks about how he was put on earth to spread love - and how he DEFENDS his family like the movie. I don’t think he knows when to stop acting!
The joke was nothing and not even very distasteful. Pretty light hearted. The real joke is why wasn’t he arrested for assault. And why the academy ignores that their host was assaulted on stage. I used to like Will Smith, although there is some bad press going around lately. But he is clearly a spoiled lunatic now. Chris Rock is the real class act here. And he always has been!

I think there’s a further layer… Jada is a black woman, we probably put way too much value on our hair but I can see why she could still take it the wrong way, especially because Chris probably shared similar knowledge about afro hair struggles with his female side of the family being black too, it probably felt worse than it should’ve…

Shocked and appauled. I have always loved Will but what he did was wrong wrong wrong. I work in Healthcare and l have seen a lot of colleagues being assaulted while doing their jobs. Chris Rock is a comedian. He was working, he gets paid to make jokes. Will and Jada have been in entertainment for many years and they should know it was just entertainment. Physically assaulting someone like that is wrong. To rub salt into the wounds he make some silly excuse about protecting his family. No way man.

I cannot understand how some of you condone such tasteless jokes about people's spouses. That joke was in very bad taste! I know someone who almost strangled a policeman in my country for touching his wife's breast. You never know when you cross the line. For someone in healthcare, I cannot understand how you call a joke made about an autoimmune condition "just entertainment".

He figured he's probably going to win an award later and so could do no wrong; he figured this would make him look like an alpha male (which he isn't and never will be) and maybe get some shock laughs. Instead he made a complete misjudgement, embarrassed himself by trying to act hard and ultimately revealed himself to be just another out-of-touch celeb with no idea how to carry himself around people.

Very violent and aggressive behaviour. The crocodile tears don’t work for me. He should of been stripped of his award. Much much better ways of handling things and he could of done so privately. As for Chris Rock he’s a comedian but when jokes become personal it’s not funny anymore. I must say he took and handled the situation very well. Will Smith should be charged this was an awful example too so many.
Personally, and I speak from experience here, I understand that losing hair is a traumatic life-altering experience, but Smith's reaction to this was over the top IMHO.
Will could have said something about it at the time (i.e. calling Rock out for being insensitive) or even during his acceptance speech, without resorting to violence first. It was just a stupid joke. Imagine if Ricky Gervais had been hosting the awards, for instance! He takes no prisoners. Would Will have done the same then?
I doubt Will will get prosecuted in any way for this, which just goes to show that the elite of Hollywood can do whatever they like and get away with it. If I'd done this, I'd be behind bars in a heartbeat.
One thing I can't get out of my mind though is what would people be saying if Will Smith was white, and he hit a black guy? It would take on a totally different meaning, right?
While I believe we're all equal, and totally acknowledge the historical and present day mistreatment of black people, this kind of behaviour should not be accepted - regardless of their skin colour.
This is assault, pure and simple. But, Rock handled it like a champ.

If Smith is allowed to get away with hitting a comedian on stage, it sets a dangerous precedent with comedy, where comedians will feel more restricted by what they can say. Smith needs to be punished.
It was a cruel joke from Rock, but that's what comedians do, make fun of people and sometimes they cross the line. When they cross the line, a silent unamused crowd should be enough of a punishment, but violence should never be the answer. If violence is a legitimate answer to comedians being cruel, then Ricky Gervais would be in a coffin by now.
The fact his son tweeted our afterwards "That's how we do it" is very worrying. Clearly his dad is not setting a great example for his kids and solving problems with violence.
He should have just got up and asked Chris to apologise to her in front of the entire room and nation.

I think Will Smith was just angry and embarrassed with himself. To me it seemed that he wasn't even angry with Chris Rock. It looked like he was fed up of Jada , the stress she puts him through, the situation and the failure he has become as a man and then directed that anger at Chris. This incident is a major setback for Will Smith. This is the man who is renowned for being the chilled-out/laid-back, “good guy;” the man who refused to “cuss” in his rap records; the man who criticised other hip hop artists for the violence in their lyrics and challenged rappers in one of his songs to: “write one verse without a curse.”
Now this same man has publicly assaulted and “cursed” someone live on TV with an estimated 16.6 million people viewing. This incident has basically undone all that Will Smith stood for in life.
In another song called “just the two of us” which he released in 1998 he speaks these words which are directed to his son Trey Smith:
“Throughout life people will make you mad
Disrespect you and treat you bad
Let God deal with the things they do
'Cause hate in your heart will consume you too”
If only Will Smith had remembered those wise words which he once spoke and handled the situation differently. As Denzil Washington said to him: “At your highest moment be careful that’s when the devil comes for you.”
Well, the “tempter” came at Will Smith’s highest moment - finally achieving an academy award; all his effort and sacrifice over the years finally paying off - but, unfortunately for him, he took the bait - hook, line, and sinker!
He notably did not apologise to Chris Rock when giving his acceptance speech so it’s clear that he was still harbouring some anger towards him and wasn’t “truly” sorry for what he had done (at the time). He has since apologised to Chris Rock for his behaviour.
Don’t get me wrong. I think that Will Smith is a great guy and one of the most inspirational and influential people out there. Just look at all this man has achieved in his life. Not only has he excelled as an actor but also as a multiple award winning music artist and boasting a career spanning nearly 40 years. He is the epitome of “success” and as a “black” male as well he has shown that “colour” has no barriers. The man is a true “superstar.”
It’s just a real shame and so unfortunate that his greatest moment was tarnished by this one act of thoughtlessness. His actions that night are going to have lasting consequences and he’s going to have to live with the poor judgement he made for the rest of his life. He will now be remembered not for his crowning achievement but rather for “that incident.” A very sad, sad situation.
With this single act, Will has shown that all of that great stuff he said, sang or acted was just a false persona, a mirage, and he sunk all that greatness to zero.
I used to look up to him, now I look down on him. All of his previous "greatness" now counts for nothing to me. I don't care to see his movies or hear his rap anymore.
Respect to Chris for keeping it together. No respect for Hollywood threatening to take Will Smiths Oscar away, and not taking ANY of that asshole Weinsteins. Go figure.
