Dav, please try and do a follow up video if you hear of him finishing the 3 other rooms/ enclosures. Especially if they do become more monitor enclosures. I am a huge varanid fan, as there are many of us. I mean how can't you be as they are like mini dinosaurs and/or dragons. Lol
I‘m not a reptile keeper but this is... I‘m speechless. It‘s so beautiful, the animals are so chilled, they love their life. That’s what I saw as a non-professional. Must be like you mentioned... like a kid in Disneyland. Jan Paul seems to be a very nice person and I think a little bit shy. That makes him extra sympathetic. Thanks for sharing this awesome adventure at such a wonderful and incredible place. Have an amazing journey.
Hey Sandy, I think with a few modifications this could be converted to a regular animal home. It truly is fantastic. Now, when I win the lottery, I know what I can spend all those millions on.
The propane/water heating system should be fairly cheap, and he uses a lot of natural light and has all that stone thermal mass, so he's as efficient as possible. I hesitate to guess and how much his energy costs went up, but it's much less than it could be with a different system.
That bazooka used a 35kW heating system tho. That's a lot of money. I work for a pool equipment company, and we design electric heaters etc. Your average 8x4 meter swimming pool would need about 15-18kW of heating to maintain the temperature if you are not living in very cold climates. That's 48 cubic meters of water being heated, and it still requires about HALF of that bazooka. This dude would save so much money if he invested in something like a heat pump using inverter technique. The COP (coefficient of performance) can go up to 15. Which means that it'll produce a heat worth 15 kW, when all you are actually putting in is 1kW. Needless to say, his house and the way he built it is beyond anything I have ever seen. Such a smart design, and I also like that he is using water as a heating medium instead of running a bunch of electric heaters.
@katy donawether Your USA numbers couldn't be more wrong. The US state with the most expensive energy prices is Hawaii; their price per kWh is similar to Portugal/Italy, and about 2/3 the price of German electric prices. Our 2nd most expensive state/s are Alaska and Connecticut; their prices are similar to Luxembourg and Finland, and about 10% cheaper than UK electricity. Energy in the US is, by far, cheaper than the EU. I don't know where you got your information. Would you care to share? Sources: ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/Electricity_price_statistics www.eia.gov/electricity/state/
Dav, that truly is a once in a lifetime adventure. Jan Paul is really smart. I noticed when he was explaining different projects, nothing had just one use. For example, water coming through heated the floor and misted the animals. And I was pleasantly surprised when he was talking to you one of the spotted string rays came up to him and Jan Paul had food that he fed the sting ray. He clearly spends time with his animals. They are not just display animals. When he pulled off the leaves to feed some animals it reminded me of Kenan Hardwick. Dav, I’m glad you had the opportunity to see Jan Paul’s place. Perhaps some other herpers and even zoos can get ideas from what he has done. His initial outlay was huge, but he did it in such a way to reduce costs in the future. Thanks for the video. Pat
I was also truly impressed at the innovation and forethought he put into his structures and enclosures. He went farther than just ‘simulating’ a natural environment, he provides almost a complete clean up crew for his animal! Besides all the live plants and soil, he has smaller animals in each of the larger enclosures to keep the water clean and break things down into smaller waste components. The food web is also respected with each of those creatures taking care of any possible pest control, while the larger creatures take care of population control. It’s simply brilliant.
Im so glad dav did a video on Jan and his home, Jan's channel was the one i suggested you check out in ypur dream reptile video bc of his Caiman lizard Hugo 😊

Yay!! I’ve been following that channel for a while now. I randomly searched “indoor rainforest” and one of his videos showed up and I was left speechless after I watched the basement at night video 👌❤️
If I didn't have little kids running around I'd have something similar.
this has to be unrivaled. Id say better than a zoo because you have one keeper, one thread of trust and care relationship. what an incredible display and gem in the hobby!
Hey this was my first reptile expo ever! I got my first snake here and it was super cool too see myself in your video!
I'm awe struck with his set up.This guy is amazing. And what's so cool he's pretty unmoved by his incredible creativity.
I know, right?
Wow. Everything is absolutely genius and gorgeous. What an incredible place. Just wow. A true work of love and art
Been following it for more than 12 years, and it still amazes me.
Even after visiting twice, you will always see something new. ;)
WOW! I can’t even wrap my mind around how much work he did to get to this point!! Just an unbelievable place. Most people find it hard to believe that a reptile can inspire so much love and dedication, but they are such awe inspiring creations that a lot of us that keep reptiles just can’t help but go a little crazy on them!
