@@jack_edwards ROMEO AND JULIET (RECOMPOSED) by Jason Rudge THE PROLOGUE The CHORUS enters. Our scene is set in an enticing city Where two rival households swap stinging scars, Uglifying the air two teens make pretty When true love blows their hearts across the stars,… Which rouse a prickly sun imparting heat To twisting blades that twist the plot on stage For the benefit of worms seeking meat From fools who rashly court despair and rage. Youth can make fools of all the greatest lovers, But sometimes outside forces play a part And in this tale a foolish youth discovers His love can’t keep old hatreds from his heart- Nor halt hearts taking trips to heaven’s gate, Which fast becomes the lovers’ tragic fate. The CHORUS exits.

You got this !!! 💪also a little tip, when you're in a hardcore reading slump, try changing up the genres of books. Graphic novel , collection of essays or poetry books are the way I do it. I can finish them faster and they make me fall in love with reading again
Good luck, you got this!! I went from years of barely reading to finishing over twenty books in 2020. Find books and genres that you're genuinely interested and don't worry too much about what's popular or what everyone else is reading. Pro-tip is to also check out audiobooks!! It took me awhile to get into but was a game changer when I finally did. If you're in the US, most libraries will give you free access to Libby (kind of like a Spotify for audiobooks).
I jumped on the bandwagon and read “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”. I’m speechless. Agree with you, it deserves the hype. Evelyn is so human yet amazing and loving.

I read "Convenience store woman" because of Jack's recommendation in both English and Polish translation and I regret nothing, the book was good and it was interesting to see the subtle differences the translators made and how it affected the mood and the flow of the story. So, thank You Jack.
Being brutally honest I started reading again bc of you, you have such a charming and interesting way to make me curious about all of this books. You’re great, looking forward to your book recommendations this year!
Same, I brought 9 books, I’m finishing the song of Achilles before I move onto Kim jinyoung born 1982. Most of the books 📚 I brought were books he read.
I enjoyed the format - giving your succinct up/down take on each. Sometimes you speak so fast I would miss the title/author, but showing the each cover solves it for me. I wish I had enough time to read everything that you really rave about - but I'm 77 now. I do read a lot, so appreciate your recommendations. There should be a literary prize for the most books read AND reviews given in a year - you are hereby nominated!
My TBR list is basically full of book recommendations from Jack Edwards and I have already made use of my Reading Log this year, my New Years Resolution is to read 50 books this year because its been a while and I’ve already read 3 thanks to Jack. Any time Jack makes a video my anxiety goes, weather it’s building a book trolly or writing an essay (which I should be doing now), its supper calming and allows my brain to escape for a while
Song of Achilles was one of the best books I've ever read until I read Circe, which was even better. Wow. Madeline Miller has written exactly two books in her life, and both of them are amazing.
I want to read Circe but I’m scared it’ll change the perception of Achilles’ and Patroclus’ relationship that I have engrained in my mind?? I don’t wanna ruin it, will it do this?? 😬
i just followed along with his storygraph profile and added stuff to the 'to read' pile directly. It was better than what i did last year lol so definitely my plan for future videos as well
I love hearing other perspectives about books I've also read. I loved the Midnight Library. As someone who consistently worries about making life altering choices, and fearing that I'll choose the wrong path, it shifted my perspective to understand that not all regrets are worth the heartache we feel.
Definitely agree. I think people give it a bad review because they think it was going to be a full on self help book masked as a novel when it's just a light heartfelt story that makes your see your past regrets/decisions differently which in turn helps your future.
Your recommendation of The Song Of Achilles made me buy the book, read it in two days and rediscover my love for reading. Thank you, truly. I didn't even realise how much I had missed the feeling of not being able to stop reading.
I relate to this a lot. Also read it in 2 days and loved it sooooo much that I kept thinking about it the next day. It made me so excited to read again and now I want to spend all my days reading.
However corny it may sound, I wanted to let you know that you're by far the most brilliant and lovely person that I've ever encountered on RUclips! Your videos have really prompted me to get back into reading this past year :) thank you for being you 🌹
"The Master and Margarita" is an incredibly difficult book to understand, especially if you read it for the first time. My mother and I have a tradition of rereading it once every 1,5 or 2 years (we are Russian). Growing up, you notice more details, more understanding comes, but each time it's a completely new story! Love your videos😍
The same, I mean it's my mother's favorite book but when I read it the first time I was like: what the hell had just happend? But I absolutely loved it
I had to pause this video so many times to add recommendations to my Goodreads, and this video successfully put me in a Mood to Read, so I’m pretty excited! Thank you, Jack!
I was just about to have a mental breakdown because of ✨exams anxiety ✨ and this popped up! I've never felt more relieved in my life🥰 everything became easier already~ thanks for being our free therapy Jack!! 😂❤️
@@ose5226 i think either 1. they live in a different part of the world where their semester didn't just start, or 2. they're like me and their school didn't get the chance to have finals before lockdown and now that things are opening up all their exams are piled in the first 3 months of the year
Me: absolutely LOVES to read Also me: takes forever to finish a book for so many reasons Idk how you can get through 164 books, I barely got through 10 books last year. Enjoyed your reviews though, they seemed genuine and honest. Looking forward to reading some of these books, especially since it'll make my bookshelf more diverse.
Take as much time as you need to read. If you rush because you think you need to be quicker you won’t enjoy it as much, and might miss important things. I imagine this is his full time job, so technically could be reading 8 hours a day which is a lot of reading time!
Just finished reading seven husbands of evelyn hugo. Read it in one night until the early morning the next day... i totally agree its a must read. The pacing and the characters are intense and well crafted... i cried loads towards the end. This is what an emotional/sad but happy book should be like... wow! And now i wonder if i should read all the books of hers...
I started crying like a baby when you talked about "Loveless". As a member of the AroAce spectrum, I get emotional everytime people learn more about my sexuality and I'm really glad that you could read the book and try to understand what it is like. Thanks, and amazing video as always Jack.
I'm nearly 30 and reading Loveless was such an "oh shit" moment for me because I recognized so much of myself in the character. Not all parts, but a lot of parts. Wonderful book
I'm queer but not aro/ace and immediately put this book at the top of my TBR! Love reading LGBTQ+ and learning more about our community. Thank you Jack for being such a great ally 🏳️🌈❤️
Piranesi was my favourite book this year! What a book, I spent hours after it trying to understand symbolism in it and unpick it and got nowhere and I just love that. It was its own maze and I know each time I’ll reread it I can go down a different interpretive route find a dead end and change my reading all over again.
The way you describe books in your videos is so concise yet whole it actually is the reason why I never get tired of watching your videos. You don’t go off in weird tangents and really keep it short it’s very great for someone like me who has adhd and the attention span of a tiktok (like you)
As a Portuguese who studied Pessoa’s poetry in high school and fell in love with it this video makes me so happy! If you ever want to read more from Portuguese authors I rly recommend Blindness by Saramago (our only Nobel prize in literature)
Thank you so much for mentioning Loveless! I can't put into words just how much that book changed my life, loveless was really my first exposure to what it can mean to be aroace and seeing someone like myself on paper for the very first time helped me to feel like I wasn't alone or broken. I couldn't stop beaming just seeing you talk about it on your platform. It makes me incredibly happy knowing there are people like you who care enough to actually make an effort to understand us instead of just being dismissive which saddly still happens more often then not. It would mean the world to me if more people could to learn about aroace with a more in depth review of the book some time in the future even if it was only short or part of a queen book compilation video :) (Remembering that being aromantic and/or asexual is a spectrum and one person's experience is not the default experience for everyone who also identifies the same way)
People have been sleeping on Fitzgerald’s short stories. They’re utterly wonderful. Flapper and Philosophers is my favorite collection. Head and Shoulders, Bernice Bobs Her Hair, The Cut Glass Bowl. So many gems.
I absolutely loved Song of Achilles and have recommended it to my serious reading friends. I'm glad to see it tops the list. Now, go read Circe by the same author and be blown away again.
I feel the exact same way about “the catcher in the rye” as you in “no one is talking about this”. Didn’t enjoy the reading process and still remember quotes and ideas from the book every single day.
Yes! I consider that to be my least favourit book and I still think about the whole thing with Holden wanting to be the catcher in the rye and what tha represents even though it has been almost 10 years since I read it
literally! at the end of the book I was like why is this still happening? this could have ended like 20 pages ago but I still love that book and annotated tf out of it 😂
I found your channel through this video back in 2020 and I've been obsessed with it since then. Your recommendations, your opinions, your aesthetic, the way you communicate, the vibes... it's just immaculate and I just know I will be watching these types of videos as long as you keep making them! Keep up the great work, Jack. We love you, we support you and thank you so much for being the absolute best booktuber that ever existed! Lots of love from Portugal!
Ahhhh! I love Crime and Punishment. It’s a dauntingly long book to some, but I urge literally anyone and everyone to read it. This was what confirmed my love for literature.
omg no cos I get so excited for every video jack posts 😭 this man single handedly got me back into reading and I can only applaud him (with both hands) ((please excuse my weak ass pun))
Jack, I had a really bad experience with the sponsor you are promoting - University of the People. I tried to request more general information using their general enquiry form, and then they tried to charge me £60 for a "processing fee" at the end, even though I wasn't enrolling in their university, just asking for information! They then kept emailing me talking about my "application" and saying I had been assigned an academic advisor?? I have asked them 3 times to stop contacting me but they won't and keep sending emails like with the subject "Reconsider your decision". The phrasing of their messages was really shady and cold-calling business like and really didn't sit well with me. I've still not gotten confirmation they have cancelled this supposed "application". Cruciallly, their degrees are also NOT recognised in the UK, if you read deep in their terms and conditions it says, which considering you're from the UK and a lot of your viewers are I feel is irresponsible of you not to mention that.
Side note - I hate to leave criticism as I enjoy your channel but just need to warn others about this. Please choose your sponsors carefully because we trust in you.
The Italian film adaptation is really lovely too! It's called Le Notti Bianche and it was made in 1957. It has the most beautiful studio set and the cinematography is absolutely dream-like. It's just **chef's kiss**
I just want to tell you how much I absolutely love listening to you talk about books. You're a great RUclips channel! Thanks for sharing your love of reading with us! : )
you've gotten me into reading again after school made me feel sick of it, and this has given me more books to put on my to-read list. thank you, as always!!
Since im at uni i only read books i had to for studying... its so sad because i loved reading just for fun... i watched all your videos and made a list with 15 books you recommended and im really looking forward to it.. thank you!!!
I read the song of Achillies in the first week of this year! As in last week and my heart still hurts :( but ohhh myyyy goddddd what a read! I saw it well everywhere but finally picked up after your recommendation and all I want to say is THANK YOU!!!!!! Also, read The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo a week prior to the song of Achillies (also after your recommendation) so that was my last book of 2021 and now I can't stop praising these books and recommending them to everyone I know! I love your recommendations pls never stop! All the love from India! :)
We must be connected!! I also just read the song of Achilles the first week of this year, and then after that, the seven husbands the Evelyn Hugo, and I also thought they were both just wonderful!
omg I can't believe I binge watched your videos all day today, and I can clearly admit, I'm obsessed. Day one of a fangirl finding her new favourite! ♥
the fact that you started the past year with song of achilles & i am starting 2022 reading it!! (kinda scared for the ending but i’m really liking it rn)
still not healed from that and i read it early 2021. also, if you haven't already read Circe by Madeline Miller, i would definitely recommend. i read it for my dissertation but absolutely fell in love with it.
Very happy to see Fernando Pessoa on your list. He’s a marvelous poet and writer and it is so sad that only a few English speakers who are interested in poetry get to know about him

Jack, I saw you read "I Have More Souls Than One" by Fernando Pessoa. He's a portuguese poet who wrote under hundreds of literary personas (heteronyms). He invented lives for all of the personas he created, made birth charts for each of them and each had a different way of writing and explored different themes. A lot of my favorite poems ever are written by him and I actually believe he is one of the best poets to ever exist. I recommend "The Book of Disquiet" by one of his heteronyms, Bernando Soares. It is an unedited fagmentary selection which he called a "factless autobiography".
As a person who loves buying books but can never read any. You are amazing and I really hope this might make up finally make me pick one of the books I have on my shelf.
Exactly!!! These are the books I'd skip over in a thrift store or book shop. I thought I'd never want to read them but now I have a never ending tbr list because of his recommendations! I never thought I'd read these but now it's all I want to do.
Hey Jack! I'd like to thank you for inspiring me to read more in 2021. I read around 63 books in 6 months, which is amazing for me! ps.- Can you please make a video on the best books you've read that are under 200/250 pages??
Your opinion on dune just breaks my heaaaart haha. I thought the characters were so well thought out and Herbert was a genius in confronting them with these Sci fi problems and make it all seem so complex but still so human that u would sometimes forget that this is a Sci fi novel. Brilliant.
Wow. I read 147 and thought there would be a boatload of overlap... only 2 of yours matched up with two of mine for 2021 (Rodham, Educated). THANKS for all the great ideas!
I have been binge-watching your channel this last week and my TBR list just exploded. You have such a genuine and contagious joy when talking about books it makes me smile. And I decided to read more diverse litterature thanks to the arabic and asian authors you reccomended.
I read Before the Coffee Gets Cold, because I saw it in one of your videos and it look really interesting. I read it and it has become one of the best books i have read in my life.
Jack and Jess helped me get out of a 2 years read slump. So here I'm for new recommendations for my, now, very long list. 2 years of books to catch up.
I love your videos and recommendations so much, man! You are the one of the reasons my book wish list will never be empty, even if your opinion on Dune is wrong on so many levels.
Clap When You Land was excellent. I love, love, love Elizabeth Acevedo’s work and narration. She’s one of my favorite storytellers. I highly recommend the audiobook versions of Clap When You Land, The Poet X, and With the Fire on High.
Absolutely loved last year’s one and hoped you would do one for this past year! And some of you may have heard but we actually created a BOOK CLUB with the community 📚😎 (details in replies)
It’s on 📚R📚E📚D📚D📚I📚T📚 And the community is just Jack’s name :) It’s also a cool place for us to communicate and post anything from memes to book recommendations. Thank you to anyone who joins and we really hope you enjoy it! :D
Dune is great as an audiobook. They get different voice for whoever is the pov character for the chapter and the cast does an amazing job. I don't think I would have had as good of a time with it if I read it.

@@jack_edwards ROMEO AND JULIET (RECOMPOSED)
by Jason Rudge
THE PROLOGUE
The CHORUS enters.
Our scene is set in an enticing city
Where two rival households swap stinging scars,
Uglifying the air two teens make pretty
When true love blows their hearts across the stars,…
Which rouse a prickly sun imparting heat
To twisting blades that twist the plot on stage
For the benefit of worms seeking meat
From fools who rashly court despair and rage.
Youth can make fools of all the greatest lovers,
But sometimes outside forces play a part
And in this tale a foolish youth discovers
His love can’t keep old hatreds from his heart-
Nor halt hearts taking trips to heaven’s gate,
Which fast becomes the lovers’ tragic fate.
The CHORUS exits.

Yay. Go for it ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
go for it! kick that reading slumps ass :)
Happy Reading ! I found joining book clubs helped get me excited about reading books I wouldn’t normally consider.

There should be a literary prize for the most books read AND reviews given in a year - you are hereby nominated!

Her writing is absolutely stunning. I need her to write more 😫

@@thomasbramwell8752 i doubt it will, she hardly ever talks about achilles or patroclus, only fleeting moments as she thinks about the far away war

i just followed along with his storygraph profile and added stuff to the 'to read' pile directly. It was better than what i did last year lol so definitely my plan for future videos as well
@@anusreeashit5548 how did you find his profile on storygraph? I want to add his 5 star books to my to-read pile.

Your videos have really prompted me to get back into reading this past year :) thank you for being you 🌹
Same!
same!

Somehow I just realized that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle are two different books.
I always mix up the titles and have been doing it for years now. At this point, I just go with it.
I read them both, they are definitely very different books
I had to pause this video so many times to add recommendations to my Goodreads, and this video successfully put me in a Mood to Read, so I’m pretty excited! Thank you, Jack!

Me: absolutely LOVES to read
Also me: takes forever to finish a book for so many reasons
Idk how you can get through 164 books, I barely got through 10 books last year.
I read 120 a year and it is pretty easy...

If you know about more asexual literature, please recommend.
I'm queer but not aro/ace and immediately put this book at the top of my TBR! Love reading LGBTQ+ and learning more about our community. Thank you Jack for being such a great ally 🏳️🌈❤️
I was about to comment the same!! I literally couldn't stop beaming :)
@@merin7286 you should check out Nick and Charlie by the same author. Everything written by Alice Oseman is a good read and time well spent, imo.
I work at a bookshop and these videos help me so much with giving recommendations!! Thanks Jack x
Piranesi was my favourite book this year! What a book, I spent hours after it trying to understand symbolism in it and unpick it and got nowhere and I just love that. It was its own maze and I know each time I’ll reread it I can go down a different interpretive route find a dead end and change my reading all over again.
!!!!!!! this !!!!!!!!
Yessss! Piranesi is stunning!
I'm reading this right now, good so far but I think the "Other" is hiding something from Piranesi.
The way you describe books in your videos is so concise yet whole it actually is the reason why I never get tired of watching your videos. You don’t go off in weird tangents and really keep it short it’s very great for someone like me who has adhd and the attention span of a tiktok (like you)

Quote of the Day: “That’s right, baby! Words and numbers. Get yourself a boy who can do both.”
My bisexual ass just jumped when I heard this lmao
Thank you so much for mentioning Loveless! I can't put into words just how much that book changed my life, loveless was really my first exposure to what it can mean to be aroace and seeing someone like myself on paper for the very first time helped me to feel like I wasn't alone or broken. I couldn't stop beaming just seeing you talk about it on your platform. It makes me incredibly happy knowing there are people like you who care enough to actually make an effort to understand us instead of just being dismissive which saddly still happens more often then not. It would mean the world to me if more people could to learn about aroace with a more in depth review of the book some time in the future even if it was only short or part of a queen book compilation video :)
(Remembering that being aromantic and/or asexual is a spectrum and one person's experience is not the default experience for everyone who also identifies the same way)
32 minutes of Jack and Books 😩❤️✨ what could be better than this?
People have been sleeping on Fitzgerald’s short stories. They’re utterly wonderful. Flapper and Philosophers is my favorite collection. Head and Shoulders, Bernice Bobs Her Hair, The Cut Glass Bowl. So many gems.
Literally they're so good! Diamonds as big as the ritz might be my favorite short story of all time!!
Imagine if Jack was a celebrity and Jack decided to read what celebrity-Jack reads

Damn that's a shame, it sounded like a good concept. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know if Jack has read it, but Fyodor Dostoevsky's "White nights" is a amazing short book, i really recommend.
It’s such a great short story, and the film adaptation is wonderful too! Four Nights of a Dreamer.
The Italian film adaptation is really lovely too! It's called Le Notti Bianche and it was made in 1957. It has the most beautiful studio set and the cinematography is absolutely dream-like. It's just **chef's kiss**

You’re so great at summarising books and making me want to read them! Thankyou so much :)

Your opinion on dune just breaks my heaaaart haha. I thought the characters were so well thought out and Herbert was a genius in confronting them with these Sci fi problems and make it all seem so complex but still so human that u would sometimes forget that this is a Sci fi novel. Brilliant.
This. To say Dune was overly complicated, with one-dimensional characters... "not like other girls..." just sounds like he didn't quite understand it.
