Make sure you check the swing arm for cracks by the welds everyone ive worked on ive had to have them welded or repaced
The z 400 frame is worse than raptor. That was one of my dream quads. I never got the swing arm reminds me of my 88 lt250r swing arm

I think for the next build, you should do the opposite of the z400 and try and build a quad from completely aftermarket parts, but still cost conscious.

As far as I can remember all the ltz frames I encountered were junk. Did a lot of racing, some Gncc mainly local XC series and raced a 04 ltz400 for two seasons ish. Had to gusset the frame and went through a few swingarms due to cracking near the carrier I believe. I know you’re going for a OEM plus theme which I love but I would highly recommend the frame gussets if you’re going to sell / ride the machine. I will state that mine was pretty well built; built motor, full suspension, and I certainly wasn’t nice to it. But a lot of guys were running stock machines and running into the same issues. None the less they were awesome quads and I certainly wouldn’t be against owning one today even having switched to Yamahas for racing… the ltz was fun and definitely a great wheelie machine. Can’t wait to see more on this the work you do is awesome. Would love to see you build a yfz.. carb or efi.
Put the drz cams and head on it. Really wakes it up especially if accompanied with 440 kit and exhaust. Fcr carb is the best upgrade I can recommend tho, miles above the stock carb
I've heard these are great upgrades! I really want to keep this one stock though.
Want a faster acting penetrant? Mix up a 1:1 ratio of acetone and ATF. I've been able to extract exhaust studs that were originally cut during a head gasket r&r on a 5.4 Ford Triton after letting them marinate for less than 20 minutes with just a pair of Chinese knock off vise grips. The ATF I used was even used. Changed out of a Honda Accord with like 25,000 miles on the fluid.

A lot of the people I watch who do "Let's Starts" on old diesel powered equipment like to use the Acetone & ATF mixture for getting the engines unseized, it does quite the trick.

Really looking forward to this build. I had a 2005 LTZ400 that had Roll Design A Arms, Custom Axis Stage 5 suspension, high comp piston, and stage two cams. It was a blast in the woods!

Aside from the motor the frame is most important. You could use it but wouldnt be worth it. Cant wait to see more! Love this build! I think your teardowns, repairs and build backs give a lot of us the self confidence to tear down our own quads and bikes. Just go for it!
That frame is way worse than I figured it would be with the possibly low hours it has. Scrap it and start with a better frame to have a much better foundation. Keep up the great work man!

Michael, your dedication to restore used and abused powersport vehicles is very inspiring. Getting the original oem tires is one of those thoughts where most everyone else would just find alternative tires to get the job done fast is why you are becoming a wealth of knowledge.

The z400 I got for my wife coming apart so hard. My axle nuts fought the hole way off I pulled my carrier out and it was broken in half!!! The swingarm had a hair line crack down edge of the weld.I can't wait to see your machine when it's done keep up the great work man!
That's another reason why the 400EX will always be the king of the 400's ;)
The 400ex is the most reliable but the z400 is faster and handles better. They both have great potential though.

I would not use the frame for sure looks weak and thanks for the heads up on the ball joint seperator fixing to do a yfz450r and that will save the day ,and thanks for doing what you do love the videos!
I GNCC raced my 03 Ltz for a couple years and added gussets to the frame everywhere then when it broke the other places had to add more. That bad boy wouldn't last one ride.
I've worked on a lot of rusty crap and occasionally things just come apart easy. Awesome video as always! My guess is the Raptor being worse.

I did a 04 a few years back. I didn't go OEM rebuild. Mam, some of even the aftermarket parts for these are expensive. I did a full engine rebuild. The head alone was 400 bucks.
I’ve been lookin forward to this build since you teased with a few pictures back in October. I have an 03 that I’ve needed to do a valve job on for the last 6 years 🤦♂️.
Money pit. Im just as bad though. Spent major money doing a 87 LT250R that serious frame issues as well. Ended up purchasing a used frame. All in the name of keeping the two stroke tradition alive.
It really is for the love of the game and not so much for ever making a profit on the machines lol

Miss my 2004 ltz400 it was my first best quad I’ve wanted since they come out and it was low hours and all stock show room condition . I regret that I sold it

I'm the same kind of idiot. 😆 I have been holding on to a 1990 Suzuki LT250S fat seat kickstart only w/reverse to go thru. Barn kept, still runs & rides. The person broke the rear fenders the day I got it while unloading it from his truck. 🙃 At the time I didn't know I would never find another set. 🤨
I think those A-arms fit the 250 lol
I like being able to fit an entire wiring harness & electrical system of this machine into a faraday cage. 😉

You've got one hell of a build on your hands! That frame is screwed man. Too much rusted out spots, not to mention there is probably rot inside the frame where you can't see it. But knowing you, seeing the ASPCA raptor, you'll make it one hell of a build!
I recently bought a ATV jack from harbor freight. I did purchase the better one they have. It's made maintenance work on my quads much easier. Just over $200 I'm happy

Also invest in the Milwaukee mid torque 3/8 gun I use it daily as mobile mechanic and it takes ambulance lugs off no problem cv axle nuts etc 600lb of nut busting torque it's even been submerged in water a few times still works like new

I would say the raptor was more bad with having holes in it but the z400 is worse over all. Also I would use that frame only because I don't have enough money to fix it lol
The suzuki manual says to replace the locking nuts every time you take them off, probably bs, but just thought I'd say something
I just used some blue loctite as opposed to spending $300 on hardware

I try to get one video out per week. My regular times are Friday at 8pm or Saturday at 2pm if I am unable to get the video out by Friday. I do also post at other times occasionally but I try to stick to that schedule if I can.
I feel somewhat satisfied seeing that coming apart without having to tear into anything than some of the severely rusted part. - Edited - Spoke too soon.
Mike, everything is a hammer, unless it’s a screwdriver. Then it’s a chisel.

Watching like a hawk my ltz400 has a couple trail rides left in it and im guna tear it down and recondition and tidy it up to continue to thrash it. Have owned it for 8+years never touched motor and starts about every 3rd rotation. Love my bike n live the channel cheers Michael 🤟😎🤙
that frame seems like a 04 with a 03 swingarm . i could be wrong but its different from my 03 .

My swing arm bolt was a nightmare on my 08 Z400. Finally after hammering on it on one side with an impact at the same time as sledge hammering it from the other side it broke loose. I was hitting it hard enough I was afraid I would snap the case because it’s engineered through the engine in the center. Once you’re that aggravated you don’t care anymore 😂
my quads also have 17mm front nuts and 14mm rear nuts very often banshee, raptor 350, adly 300.
Frame is thrashed definitely replace that, the 03 kfx 400 is the same atv if u need parts
