sounds like a nothingburger to me. loose collaboration with not much business interest, borrow some lab equpment and brainstorm some design ideas, no one should be really responsible, if things went well it's a win-win, unfotunately accident happened and it's totally understandable no one want to talk about it. To be fair the titan did make multiple trips to Titanic so it's a success, maybe just not reuse it so many times. Saturn V is single use and made it to the moon no one call that a failure.
The Saturn V was _designed_ to be used once. That's why it was a success when it landed on the moon once. The titan sumbersible was designed to be used multiple times. Therefore, fact that it broke at all while still in use makes it a failure.
How much do you understand the diplomacy involved in obtaining donations? What would it take for a University to publically rebuke a wealthy donor when other donors would witness this and have concerns about being anywhere near such an institution? And if someone has given you hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars and you feel the need to distance yourself from that person, how mean are you going to be to the person who has just given your group more money than many people make in a lifetime?
Here's something you probably didn't know - The UW spends like 600 dollars on each chair they put in the "Faculty Lounge" they buy SecretLabs Titan Evo (specialty "gaming" chairs that are garbage and overpriced but they are famous because youtubers use them) chairs for their lounge. I found one hidden away in the hospital when I worked there and management told me to shut up about it and ended up firing me later because I called them out
Bohemian Club- Stockton was a member- his dad had been president
Posthumous question I'd love to ask Rush. "What's it feel like being such an asshole ?"

It is not a success just because it didn’t break the first time. Hopefully no one lets you become an engineer with that kind of logic
