We got some expert pro drummers in the comment section complaining about “pop punk” drumming who can’t even hear the techniques, tempo changes, the complexity of the tracks he’s playing.
I don't know why everyone's complaining about the sound. I've seen Hannes with his band live and I kind of stood behind the P.A. , so I just got the sound from stage. And the drums just sounded like in this video. Less EQ and stuff. And the drums sound killer. Especially the toms! Enough talking, great video, great drummer! Servus!
Love that Meinl is accepting these great metal drummers. Derek Roddy, Hannes Grossmann, and I know there have been some other metal drummers play these festivals. Would love to see Jamie Saint Merat get invited to play at the festival! One of the best metal drummers out there and he deserves the recognition!
The almost unmatched blistering speed of his blast beat is one thing. But the sheer force he is able to generate while doing it is what really boggles my mind. It’s like his hand and finger muscles possess the bite force of a saltwater crocodile
He also previously played in Necrophagist, besides Obscura and Blotted Science which he's in right now. Obscura is the stuff he's playing here, basically progressive, melodic death metal. Blotted Science is a mix between technical and progressive death metal. Although it's more progressive than death metal, if that makes sense? His old band Necrophagist pretty much defined technical death metal as we know it today.
@TheAnnihilator12 And one of the coolest, most humble persons you'll ever meet. Last time I talked Jamie we were drum-nerding it up for a little less than 2 hours just talking about all these greats in music. It's real cool that he doesn't consider himself to be one of the best but always sees room for improvement.
I like it how the bass drum volume is not way too loud, something that ppl in my band dont realize haha, they want my bassdrum to be as loud as the instruments.
I just think they didn't give him triggers on the bass drum, he is hitting all the notes for sure...but towards the end of or in the middle of double bass runs, its like the right kick is coming through more, triggers would have solved this...which I know Hannes normally plays with. His blasts still sound really really good. It's just the the higher note divisions get flubby and lost.
I'm going to guess the Power Center Reverse Dot head (or maybe HD Dry or ST Dry)...and some coated G2 heads for the toms. G2's are warm, and the Power Center is like....industry standard for Tama drums.
Never thought about it), every normal musician can remember playlist no less then 10 songs without any troubles, and if you created all drum staff in song by yourself, i think you can memorize unlimited volume of it)
that's because drummers don't necessarily play their stuff note for note - many just know the patterns, grooves and trademark fills. but memorizing each particular stroke would often be too much. There are a few perfectionists, but it isn't common.
Aside from memorizing a song using your brain, you can also do that by using your muscles. If you play a song often enough, and you do that if you're in a band annd rehearse often, your muscles are able to remember complex movement patterns. As long as you keep playing the songs and don't change your setup, you're able to play even these difficult songs without really having to think about them.
lots of repetition. Also many times as a drummer you improvise a bit. But if it is note for note it's just many weeks of repetition. Not as hard as it seems
Guitarist and drummers in bands don't need sheet music because they just remember what they write. Hannes does a good job playing the music the same without a lot of improvising. It is definitely as hard as it looks at first. But once you tour it becomes as easy as walking. Normally people use sheet music if they didn't write the music. It is less personal to them.
Again, people crying over the sound of the mix. It's probably more important to Meinl if the people who actually paid to be there could hear the sound properly. Isn't this simply meant to showcase Hannes' performance? On youtube? For FREE? Some extra mics around the right cymbals for this video might've helped sell them better but other than that, it was a live performance at a festival, not like a Jimmy Fallon session with a trillion dollar budget. People complain too much.
I have never heard a good mix on any video filmed at the Meinl drum festival. Nothing against the company at all because I love their products, but I seriously always thought it was just me!
Yeh, the sound is good, but the only thing what I find a bit distracting is that the kick drums are pretty quiet, specially when he does some faster stuff but otherwise great natural sound! Cheers! :)
@danielcalderon Meinl should actually be concerned about the sound on RUclips. RUclips has millions of potential cymbal buyers who want to hear what the cymbals actually sound like. You'd be naive to think that Meinl just want to appeal to the people that were there.
Like I said, "Some extra mics around the right cymbals for this video might've helped sell them better." But they're just a cymbal manufacturer, not highly trained professional sound engineers. The sound you hear is probably what went straight through the FOH.
the only thing i might complain is the bass. i would have put triggers on it.. I bet (like you say) it sounds better live, but idk... not saying i hate the sound of the bass, but i would preffer triggers. lol
True musicians don't bring their judgements over what others put their efforts and passion in, unless you re a complete douchebag, you either like and try to open your eyes and mind to grasp as much as you can from others, or you re just free to pass your way if you don't like!
Its a obscura song....all his shit is the shit obscura, blotted science,necrophagist...and all his solo stuff is bad ass...hes got alex webster whos bassist for cannibal corpse...playing guitar and bass
The bass drum is only important if you make it that way. Actually....it is VERY important....but not most. You know what's most important? The guy behind the bass drum, haha
Do you know how it sounded there? A shitty YT upload, captured and compressed audio will disclose, how the live audio was. When people get that? And btw, if you think in metal the BD is the most important, you have no clue about musicianship.
To my little critics: I was doing studio work and playing jazz and fusion before you were born. Drumming today HAS changed to more foot work on double bass. It's all single stroke rolls and bass/ tom triplets. There is no rudiment work! That's the point. Charlie of Slayer is the closest to this stuff BUT he was unique. Disagree if you want but this gives me a headache.... No groove and monotonous. I'll take Benny and JoJo any day!
ScofieldSeminary ReasonForHope Hmm... it's sad that you are close minded. This is a different kind of drumming/music! And Hannes Grossmann can play double strokes and paradiddle (and other stuff) too and he is doing it in some songs. Most extreme drummers are really boring, only speed, no finesse. But some of them are really good and playing in different styles too. You should see "Derek Roddy: Live at Modern Drummer 2008" and Flo Mounier at Drumeo and other stuff. I'm a metal/hard rock/progressive rock guy, but i like Benny Greb's Moving Parts and Nerve with Jojo Mayer. 'Cause i like good music! I try to be open. You should try it too! Maybe you are old and feel bitter or maybe you want trolling and you fooled me. Fine. Now have a nice day
Charlie if slayer? charlie benate? he's in anthrax. dave lombardo is the original drummer for slayer. and then pull bostaph is his replacement. anyway I agree with you a out this guy and his drumming. it's the same crap. but there is goo death metal drummer. im.sure you haven't seen. like Pete sandoval, Derek roddy, t yeung. Yiu should just check those 3 out. I'm mean look at alot.of there work. not 2 vids and claim your old age and know True drumming. ever since youtube everyone is a pro now.
+Kenny Rhodes Calm down bruh. Rudiments aren't the only thing in drums that make you good. Mike Portnoy is one of the most technical and creative drummers our there. I don't see many Jazz drummers do anything near as interesting as he ever did. Hannes Großmann is a great, technical metal drummer. Using rudiments does not make you a good drummer, nor does just playing fast. Hannes's parts almost perfectly fit the music and that's what it's all about.
So? Every instrument evolves and if you ask me Drummers are in their prime in this day and age. Most of us are well rounded and can play multiple styles and genres. You're completely moronic in your statement. Also everyone I hear talk Shit about double bass and being fast in general is because they can't do it themselves. I know I've faced discrimination like that.
Let's not forget that Hannes also played the drums on the legendary "Epitaph" by Necrophagist.. without a doubt Hannes is an amazing drummer.
The fact he went from the middle of Anticosmic Overload into Universe Momentum so flawlessly is a thing of beauty on its own
his plays one of the most perfect blast beats i've ever heard.
Yea an uses two feet which makes total sense to me at least, why would you have half the volume for twice the effort if it isn't just to show you can?
We got some expert pro drummers in the comment section complaining about “pop punk” drumming who can’t even hear the techniques, tempo changes, the complexity of the tracks he’s playing.
yes, bc tempo changes define a drummer lol. Ignorant
wat
I don't know why everyone's complaining about the sound. I've seen Hannes with his band live and I kind of stood behind the P.A. , so I just got the sound from stage. Can Meinl cymbals upload some more vidoes of Hannes he is such an amazing drummer
i love you meinl! thanks for posting all this videos of awesome drummers
I need that tama shells. The sound of those is so amazing! Btw Hannes is also an amazing drummer
It's a medley between "Anticosmic Overload" and "Universe Momentum". Both songs from the Cosmogenesis album.
No idea who this drummer is or what band he plays for but he's pretty freaking awesome!
Hannes has come so far. He has 3 solos albums and is now in one of the craziest progressive metal bands (alkaloid).
His techniques now are so solid.
Absolute beast
@TheAnnihilator12 And one of the coolest, most humble persons you'll ever meet. Last time I talked Jamie we were drum-nerding it up for a little less than 2 hours just talking about all these greats in music. It's real cool that he doesn't consider himself to be one of the best but always sees room for improvement.
Very nice! Good to see some extreme drummers finally getting the attention they deserve.
Hannes!
very cool,,as always.
sweet post.
Hannes amazing technique and aesthetically pleasing to listen
"Our drummer Hannes performing a medley of "Anticosmic Overload" and "Universe Momentum" at this year's Meinl Drum Festival."
best drummer straight up. he will run the biz for 10+ more years.
Marco Minnemann, Gavin Harrison & Hannes Grossmann... The fuckin'g incredible Drum Gods.
Add Matt Gartska too
mmm..ok, I first thinking in Blake Richardson and Alex Rudinger, but nothing as Minnemann, Harrison and Grossman, really nothing in the same level.
Sean reinert?
dreamtheater186 jamie st merat!!!
Hannes is not even close to Marco or Gavin. Lol.
Hannes has gott to be one of the best drummers of the modern day
The bass drum could have been a little bit louder in the mix, but I was really happy to see the toms so loud. Usually its the other way around lol.
A trigger would have helped as well I think
phenomenal ride work
The best and sickest drummer in the world
Remember that this is part 1. Maybe in the next video(s)?
I like it how the bass drum volume is not way too loud, something that ppl in my band dont realize haha, they want my bassdrum to be as loud as the instruments.
His hi-hat grooves are really cool. He's got some damn fast hands too.
Great playing, but the sound mix is awful.
I just think they didn't give him triggers on the bass drum, he is hitting all the notes for sure...but towards the end of or in the middle of double bass runs, its like the right kick is coming through more, triggers would have solved this...which I know Hannes normally plays with. His blasts still sound really really good. It's just the the higher note divisions get flubby and lost.
guess we can chalk it up to being 2012...
I really like the way this guy plays... pretty intense
hannes is a fvckin beast. gettin his dvd!
I'm going to guess the Power Center Reverse Dot head (or maybe HD Dry or ST Dry)...and some coated G2 heads for the toms.
G2's are warm, and the Power Center is like....industry standard for Tama drums.
I love Hannes.
He also did drums for necrophagist and Christian Muenzner
All those microphones and I hear 8% of the music. Well done Meinl's sound mixer, have fun at your next job!
The sound in this Video is not the best
but have you been there ... ???
If not you've missed one of the best sounds on a festival !!!!!!
I think he meant as in the recording of this video, opposed the sound when you were there live. I was there live, and the sound was fucking perfect.
he's awesome
the mix is fine.
In fact, he used it twice in the video. ( 1:03 - 4:23 )
очень очень круто!!!!!!!!!
how the hell do you memorize playing a complex song without sheet music? drummers, please i need an answer
Never thought about it), every normal musician can remember playlist no less then 10 songs without any troubles, and if you created all drum staff in song by yourself, i think you can memorize unlimited volume of it)

best. drummer. ever.
@VerdugoX2L Agreed!

Just great. Not much more needs to be said.
Yeh, the sound is good, but the only thing what I find a bit distracting is that the kick drums are pretty quiet, specially when he does some faster stuff but otherwise great natural sound!

never heard of this guy.......what band does he play in?

Song name? And is this Obscura's song?
I know that the band is Obscura, but what song it is?
I find the sounds awesome :)
Hey people just grab some head phones or even some crappy ear buds, it sounds pretty fine other than some of the fast double bass parts.
Intense af, amazing still.
What kind of evans drum head he use in the snare and toms?
Damn I want some Meinl cymbals haha
Sick Drummer \m/
what song? :D
the only thing i might complain is the bass. i would have put triggers on it.. I bet (like you say) it sounds better live, but idk... not saying i hate the sound of the bass, but i would preffer triggers. lol
What kit is he using here?
Beast
I'm not too familiar with his work but I want to be, what song is he playing here?
Obscura - Anticosmic Overload. Check out Orbital Elements as well.
The audio in this isn't bad at all
which he don't use in the whole song, by the way
He always looks a bit surprised and frightened :D
The only complaint I have about this is that I expected his kicks to have far more boom to them
It's fine.
someone hear the cymbals themselves?
True musicians don't bring their judgements over what others put their efforts and passion in, unless you re a complete douchebag, you either like and try to open your eyes and mind to grasp as much as you can from others, or you re just free to pass your way if you don't like!
Again. The Sound is horrible. Who mixes this? Is there ANYONE who mixes it?
Check out my band Nucleuspheres :))
we have a work of Hannes Grossmann on drums!
sean reinert+richard christy+gene hoglan = hannes grossmann
19 slipknot fans dislikes the video
I see that David Faustino has learned some drums. lol.
why can't meinl ever do anything right when it comes to these videos?
Superstars. You can tell by the long lugs.
just left a trigger in bassdrum
Am i the only one finding the compression on the snare very funny ( because it's very very audible )
I love all these performances, but the guy at the board for Meinl makes all the drums sound like pizza boxes.
Long live progressive :D, even progressive heavy/death metal sounds killer :D, now I need more prog jazz xD
great playing but very plastic drum sound
ALLLL them mics plus a good set and cymbals and it literally sounds like hes hitting cardboard boxes and pans haha
Its a obscura song....all his shit is the shit obscura, blotted science,necrophagist...and all his solo stuff is bad ass...hes got alex webster whos bassist for cannibal corpse...playing guitar and bass
that base drum...... fuck that shit
looks like a tama starclassic i thnk
He is god.
People have different taste
The bass drum is only important if you make it that way.

i guess the guy that gets paid from youtube viewers has mixed it.
QQ
He means the mixing. You can still hear everything and stuff but the mixing is very bad. All Meinl videos have terrible mixing.
THIN BUT POWERFUL
