/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so the 60th Anniversary Of Doctor Who is now out and the latest string of episodes sees the legendary David Tennant returning to the role. It got me thinking back to my favourite Doctor Who episode of all time which I'm sure many of you are also massive fans of.
That is Blink.
Often described as being a gateway entry into the whoniverse this standalone episode blew my mind when I first watched it back in....back in 2007 is that. Pffft time goes so fast.
Still though it's something that's stuck with me and I've went back to it more times than any other episode in the series.
Everyone I've showed this too has become hooked on the Whoniverse and this video is gonna be a kind of love letter to the episode that's about lots of timey whimey wibbly wobbly stuff. Now interestingly the episode was pretty much a rush job with writer Stephen Moffat thinking it was going to be a disaster.
He was so caught up in writing Jekyll he decided to throw himself onto what he called a grenade.
The episode was going to build off the back of the short story titled What I Did on My Christmas Holidays by Sally Sparrow.
This featured the titular character being contacted by the doctor after the Tardis burps him out. Writing messages under her wallpaper and sending her a video tape with messages in it these elements provided the basis for the episode with both becoming plot devices in it.
In both Sally takes the main focus and I kinda love how the Doctor isn't even really in the episode that much. Up until the end he's viewed through recordings and he's used mainly as a plot device that relays information rather than being a big part of the entry. This episode also introduces the terrifying Weeping angels who made their doctor who debut during this entry.
Huge thank you for checking out this trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoyed I journey back through it. If you enjoyed this video then please subscribe to the channel ruclips.net/channel/UCq3hT5JPPKy87JGbDls_5BQ
i'd honestly love more breakdowns of episodes like heaven sent and girl in the fire place. especially since it has a bigger audience outside the UK know thanks to disney +
Blink just works on so many levels as you can watch it multiple times and keep on noticing new parts! It just proves even simple script and good directors can form a perfect episode which endures time and space
And a lead actress with the following decorations: a British Academy Film Award, nominations for two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award.
Carey Mulligan elevates this episode. The story is great, and the weeping angels are creepy, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as good with a lesser lead actress. She makes Sally very relatable which is important when you're trying to get the audience to buy into a time travel story like this. She makes the episode feel grounded in reality while at the same time just as fanciful as you could want a time travel story to be.
Well said! Carey M. makes this episode. Which is one of the all-time great Dr Who stories.
Came to the comments to say this. This was the first time I remember seeing the actress, and she was perfect in the role, as she has been in many since.
This is my “background noise” episode for a tv show. I know this episode front to back and back to front, word for word and all. Sally Sparrow would have been a fantastic companion had the actress accepted a longer term on the show, and she is a phenomenal actress.
The best episode to show someone who's never seen the show before.
Agreed 💯
Definetly. Was my first one ever, too. 😊
100%, id probably do this, Turn Left and Heaven Sent.
There's so much stuff to watch in this show, I don't know where to begin from
Can you guys suggest some stand alone episodes like this?
@@ShoaibAli-iz3kn The Girl In The Fireplace from Season 2. The Doctor, Rose and Mickey arrive on an abandoned ship in deep space centuries in the future, and find inside it a window that looks back to pre-revolutionary France. The whole episode is outstanding, the closing scene magnificent.
Father's Day from Season 1. Rose begs the Doctor to take her back to the day her father died in a hit-and-run accident so she can comfort him in his final moments. Instead she saves his life, with dire consequences that not even the Doctor can do very much about. Splendid performances all round, but especially from Shaun Dingwall as Pete Tyler.
Heh, these DW episodes (and Jekyll) solidified to me that Moffat is a lot like George Lucas. If you keep his aim small and focused, he can create some *awesome* stuff. But... if he doesn't have someone looking over his shoulder to - even just occasionally - tell him "no," things are going to start going off the rails.
This brings back memories of watching peak doctor who on Saturday evenings man what a time
It's amazing to me that the episode's scrip was rushed out just too get it filmed. It's a fantastic episode. The Weeping Angels have been my most feared alien from Doctor Who since I first saw the episode. They are so creepy. Of course, you can make a good life for yourself in the past, but the confusion of being deposited into the past and the loss of everyone you loved in the present is terrifying.
Thank you for this breakdown. :)
yeah I think the angels might even be my favourite villains, just something so creepy about them silently waiting to attack
I hardly watched doctor who but this was one of my memorable episodes, the weeping angels genuinely used to scare the crap out of me, even now as an adult they're creepy, they pretty much don't move and are still so effective, suchhh a good use of an antagonist
It was my first episode! That's literally what she said! It's been ten years and it still freaks me out! Thanks again Paul!
Thanks for posting this deep dive into Blink
I remember watching this episode when it first came out with my kids, 9 & 11 at the time. Weeping angels still make my daughter shudder now.
I rewatched the episode before watching your breakdown and I couldn’t believe what a great piece of television it is.
Thanks again Paul
Glad you covered this one. Even with all it’s wibbly, wobbly, timey, whimey stuff it’s still enjoyable for even people that have never seen the show. I’ve used this more than once as a recommendation to get people into the show.
The string sounding theme of the angels still gives me PTSD such a chilling sound for a terrifying villain, Blink is still my top episode of Doctor Who. To this day statues make me nervous 😂😂
Yes, it is perfect! I remember so many folks who lobbied to make Sally Sparrow a companion, but I think in her own way, she's the best non-companion ever!! And that's a great accomplishment in itself! So THANKS for this!!!!
I’d love to see you do more doctor who content!
This is the very reason why I was so sure Carey Mulligan would nail Daisy Adair (sp?) in The Great Gatsby. Impeccable performance & was my intro in Dr. Who. Admittedly I haven’t watched post David Tennant but he was flawless as The Doctor
The one and only good weeping angels story 😂 what a banger blink was, felt like a kid again seeing tennant in the 60th special
I love that my favorite RUclips breakdown channels are doing doctor who's stuff now.
I completely agree. I remember being scared as a child with Dr Who, and this one scared me as an adult. Genuinely frightening.
Agreed. Nothing tops the fear and dread of the Weeping Angels. Great, great writing.
Learning that the script was rushed further cements my frustrations with Moffat. Moffat often tried too hard to be clever which reflected poorly in the final product. I shudder to think how this episode would have been ruined if he actually gave it more attention!
Thank you for make me revisiting the nice memories
Totally agree! I loved this episode! One of the best Doctor Who episodes ever made. And I’ve been watching Doctor WHO since the Tom Baker days back in the 70s. Tennant himself, the best Doctor since Baker.
This is weird as heck I have been thinking about this episode a lot last couple of days and my time visiting my family in Scotland (2nd generation American) and how much they loved dr who and how they all made sure to sitdown and catch the new episode now my favorite breakdown channel covering this episode out of the blue xD.
I thought you were talking about the Dr Who special for a second! I was like WTF? 😂
I absolutely love this episode. When someone asks me what are my top ten TV shows, I say "Blink" and "Dr Who with Vincent Van Gogh" are in my top 10 list.
I have seen every Doctor Who episode throughout my life. I started watching as a small child. Up until David Tennant’s arrival, The Fourth Doctor was my favorite. But Tennant went to a whole other place of inhabiting the role. He is, by far, the definitive Doctor Who now and I don’t see how he will ever be surpassed. He is, as Paul said, legendary. Blink is one of my favorite episodes of all time.excited to see your take on this, Paul. I hope we have more Doctor Who analysis coming. ❤
I remember reading at the time this first came out that because of busy production schedules they needed an episode that wouldn’t require as much filming time for The Doctor and Martha, and that’s why this episode exists.
That is correct, same with flesh and monsters, midnight and turn left
I think the Empty Child 2 parter is a good gateway as well. Plus my fav of all time. Blink is a close second for me
My favourite YT channel talking about my favourite tv show
Blink and The Girl in the Fireplace are my favourite episodes. Would love you to do more iconic episodes.
yeah no doubt, girl in the fireplace is another banger as well, so so good.
Don't forget 'Midnight'!@@heavyspoilers
5:28 *See's a new 'Heavy Spoilers' video* "Hey everyone, an old man is talking!"
It was a good episode and doesn't hit you over the head with ' the message'
Oh gawd.. now you make me wanna continue DW where I left off. I actually sorta binged it.. so by the time I was at Matt Smith's run, I was still not ready for the companion change. I lived through Rose Tyler. But Donna. Donna's run still makes me cry.
this was indeed the episode that got me into doctor who as a child, back then i thought it was a horror show! I love that the doctor has no clue who she is and we get a break from his timeline to remind us that in reality, his timeline is unlike anyone else’s, and reminds us just why everyone around him is always so confused by his presence. this episode kind of comes across as fan fiction in the best possible way because you are able to imagine what it’s like to be the main character of the episode so clearly. Just going into an old abandoned house to take cool pictures, and then a creepy statue ends up chasing you. in the same way that if the doctor were real he would just one day show up in our lives and have no clue who we are and we probably wouldn’t be on his timeline anyways.
Grate episode I'd say this "midnight " turn left" and "the waters of wars are definitely in ma top 5 for the 10th doctor
Love how the Doctor's video on this is actually an Easter Egg itself on the Series 3 box set.. ;)
Oh snap! Tennant is back??! Gotta get back into this show. He was by far my favorite Doc!
The weeping angels! I used to get nightmares about this episode from Doctor Who.
Another thought: Larry is *so* proto-Rory :)
“Now Jessica!”
- Kilgrave 😂
I agree!! Thanks for the walk through!!
Blink was hands down my favourite episode, the tension build was amazing
hell yeah Paul! Thanks for the video
The first episode with the Weeping Angles is easily the best episode in the series, and the best episode featuring Weeping Angels. I honestly felt disappointed when the Weeping Angles moved in the second episode (with 11, River and Amy). Having shots of the angles moving, even if for a brief second, just removes the tension for me. With Blink, they're much more terrifying *because* of their seemingly static nature
This is 100% my favorite episode of Doctor Who ever. I've made so many people sit down to watch this as a way to try to get them to watch the series with me
The hedge lions outside the Overlook Hotel's hedge maze operate on the same rules, and it was definitely the scariest part of the book for me.
Yess doctor who breakdowns please say they will be more doctor who breakdowns.
One of the best episodes ever, those angles creeped me all the way out lol
Its a truly great episode. I hope you add dr who breakdowns to your channel
My favourite console room has to be 12’s. It looks lived in, proof that this is the Doctor’s home.
It is great. The only loose end is how the angels hadnt gotten to the tardis yet. They had the key and they knew where the tardis was. The cops had it hauled off. They would have left to find it not hang out at the house.
Carey Mulligan and the director gets most of the credit. What they've done here is just brilliant.
Oh hell yeah. My top three , no order.
Blink
Family of blood
The Husbands of River Song….for one scene especially.
My favourite is the mimic that takes your voice
This and Midnight are amazing TV horror, I'd even say Midnight maybe edges it as a better horror episode!
Larry fills in using Sally's bit's 😅😂
This is one of my favorite episodes.
I just watched the new episode after not watching this series since Capaldi left and fuck me I missed this era of doctor who and wanted to do a rewatch..... now I'm definetly going to do this after everything watched this
Please do more Doctor Who videos!!! Love the channel
Your doing your party for king and country I’m proud of you
I scared my dad and brother by pretending to be an angel once. I heard them making dr who villian references while I was in my room, like "exterminate", etc. I quietly opened my door and snuck into the hallway behind the couches and stood with my hands over my eyes (just enough peeking to see their reactions). About a minute or so later, my dad turned around, did a double take, and screamed, causing my brother to jump sky high and turn around too. We all died laughing.
6:38 "sally sees several screens" say that 10 times really fast
The best episode ever!!!!
I’ve watched Doctor Who since the 70’s
First ever dr who I've watched as well
This is peak Who. Also a great intro to someone who hasn’t watched the show.
Also a very young Carey Mulligan 👍
Thanks, Paul.
Weeping angel type monsters are top 5 scary monsters to me
Would Cathy’s grave/corpse have existed before she got time jumped by the angels? Or would her body have existed twice from since when she was born? Or would her corpse gradually come into existence as she gets closer in life to the point of the angels time jump? Or would her body already be decomposed by the time she’s born so there “isn’t a paradox”? Or is there possibly no paradox due to her possibly being her own ancestor in a closed time loop?
I feel like it wouldve existed just in the same way that Billy made the messages on the dvds which were there before Sally even met him
Such an amazing episode
Brilliant Move. Showing people what good Doctor Who is. Brilliant. /bow Paul/Definition.
i want to reiterate. You are brilliant. Everyone else bashed who for doctor donna, and you flip the table. and show goodness. Gosh Damn Bro. *chefskiss*
haha thank you man
Incredible episode.
Amazing episode
As a Doctor Who fan for 40 years, I couldn’t disagree more. Blink isn’t even a top 50 episode. Caves of Androzani, The City of Death, The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Daemons, The Eleventh Hour, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and The Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead are all much better constructed and acted stories than Blink.
Absolute stellar.
Yes. It is the best episode.
Are you going to breakdown the 4 specials???
My favourite episode!
good job pauly this is good, I cliked lick
Let’s go
Il never forget how lucky I was one day to keep CBBC turned on past 6oclock (if you know you know) and catch this episode on BBC3 without knowing what show it was
If I knew it was Dr who I might turn it off because of the stigma but didn’t know and ended up loving the series after that
Them angels gave me NIGHTMARES
On my box set of season 3 on the dvd that has blink on it also has the dvd easter egg from the episode on it
I want to start Doctor Who but there is so many seasons, I do not know where to start
Craziest thing to me is a good portion of the angels were real actors.
Blink is sooooo good!!!
No analysis of the Angels based on what we learn in Byzantium?
I had to take it back when you said when Larry met Sally cus I could of swore you said she went to see her brother Larry 😂 but hearing it back it wasn't HER brother 😅
Yay!!!!!! It’s Paul’s sexy Morgan Freeman like voice!
Feel for my primary school teachers who had to take about 60 10-12 year olds to a church full of statues the week after this episode aired 👀
Jekyll was such a good show
I'm waiting for a Charlie Brooker led reboot.
This episode scarred me for life. I hate cement, marble, or whatever garden statues.
So living in South Wales on doorstep of where all these are filmed the blink episode has now made me not trust any of the statues in town lol
Most of the episodes of the 9th, 10th, & 11th Doctors should be adapted to the big screen.
"You told him you were 18, you lying cow...."
More doctor who pls sir xx
I never understood how the TARDIS was in the basement of the house when she had seen it with all the cars and other things in the police station. I might just be overthinking it but please can someone help me 💀
Yes!!! Peak content. Thank you heavy spoilers
The time loop hurts my head ngl
