Do I have to start the font out in light grey or can I use any color I want to start?

I have so many questions. Why did you start with a gray text? If I start with a yellow text instead, will it make the end result look completely different from yours? Is there a way to get this 3D text effect against a transparent background so that I can place it over a graphic? halp.
merge 3D layers option is blocked for me... i have it on RGB too...

@tutvid Why does the 3D effect go away when I click the type? I keep accidentally clicking and have to re-render...
How can I put a gradient on the text? It takes the gradient off the text when I make it 3d, then I cant use any blending options on the 3D text. All I want to do is make 3d text that has a gradient!

Tip: My photoshop set the default render title size to maximum when he has his on medium. I realized something was up when it said my render would take 2 hours so I went back and compared my dialogue box with his.

I don't have the 3D button or the extrusion option. Do you know why?

I cannot click the 3d button thingy. it's there but it's light grey (Unavailable to click on) and idk what to do now....

You have to make sure you have RGB instead of CMYK :)

Thanks for the tut. Good work. Question- can this be done on a transparent background, or does PS need to have a solid bg in order to create the shadows? I have some photos that I want to add 3D text to, but a solid color bg won't give me the effect I want. Basically, I have holiday photos with some empty wall space, and I want to add holiday text to appear that they're coming out of the wall. Feedback is appreciated!
Just don't use the postcard option. Render without.

Is there a way to have your background be an image? Also, is there a way to cut down the time on this to a couple minutes?

When I make my background a postcard, it changes it to gray and I have no idea why... I did this tutorial before and worked perfectly. How do I fix this?
Update: if you change the "style" to "unlit texture" then this doesn't happen. But now my "3D" tab will only show me either the background mesh OR text, not both together (postcard & words). If I select both it just asks me what I want to make a new 3d layer out of ?? Anyone have any recommendations? 😂

I haven't ever touched the 3rd elements of ps. I think I will give this a go though as it seems reasonably easy. I'm terrible with time so, take as long as it needs : )

Does this 3d text translate in any way into After Effects? Can I open the PSD file in After Effects and move the camera around to see the 3d effect? Or does it not translate like that? Thanks
Totally into your tutorials! revived my interest photoshop as well as illustrator. I have a day job, I'm not an artist this is just a hobby. I have a question, I notice you use 72dpi all the time. Why not 300dpi? If anyone can give me a lay-man answer that would be awesome. I understand that it's dots per inch and 300dpi is far higher resolution. so yeah, why not 300dpi? Thank you.
72 dpi is for screens, monitors, phones, LEDs, etc. 300 dpi is for printing

Great video! I haven't tried too much 3D on photoshop, i find it a bit confusing. I learned a bit of C4D, but it's good to know how to make some things on ps also!
That was fun. I used to be so good at Photoshop, but allowed my skills to lag in favor of video and 3D. So it's cool to see what's evolved.

I was using font that has 45 and 90 degree angles, so my font should have had straight lines, mine came out ridged when I put it into the 3D mode, why?

The 3D extrusion option is greyed out. That would be a helpful tidbit to have as it seems that's not a typical setting to have available. I'll go to google.
Oh, and 7 minutes is great, but man, you go so fast I have to back it up and pause every 5 seconds. It's still a 25 minute tutorial. But thanks for posting it, I'm following along, I hope it works.

It automatically changes my background to gray. I want the background and the letters white only showing gray as the shadows. HELP!

You don't mentioned anything about how to save this as a potential png or jpeg image file. no point in making it, if I have no idea how to use it.

Hi there! I loved your video and I did my logo BUT when I want to save as PNG and I don't find this option in PS. How I can save and use as a logo? Thanks in advance!
Go to FILE - SAVE AS...- Select PNG from the PSD dropdown menu.
Thank you Jean-luc Picard for answering! I tried it many times after I did the logo. That's why I was asking you of that, but when I open the menu I don't have the PNG possibility. I was annoyed because I did many logos, not 3D, and I always save them as a PNG without problem. It is very rare? I though maybe it was because I did in 3D format :(

Blender gets this done in way less time, the render with GPU takes me 1 minute and there is no noise at all ^^

If your computer doesn't meet the minimum specs for 3 D then it will be greyed out (in my case).
Mine was grayed out, but I when I switched from CMYK mode to RGB, it fixed the issue.
