It is a bit cringey that people see criticizing of the military complex as disrespect towards the individual members of the military.

To me, supporting the troops should mean keeping them out of combat, and able to be at home with their families, unless they actually are protecting the country from actual invaders or active threats.
Bashing individual soldiers isn't cool, but I'm all for bashing the military industrial complex, which gets so many of them killed or mentally scarred for no reason by offering them hope for opportunities such as college.
And I do think it's fair to say that most anti-war music is directed at the MIC, not the individual soldiers. e.g. "Why don't the presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?"
In that, I'm fine with bands playing for them, and providing some escape and relief to people in a very hard line of work. I'm less fine with the pandering of saying "Thanks for defending our freedom." when the military actions we engage in have very little to do with anything like that.

There is a reason that Slayer's punk covers album sounds great and authentic. That reason is because Jeff Hanneman was the punk essence within the band, and spent most of his formative years in the punk scene and writing punk songs/music. He himself admitted his riffs are mostly punk influenced and that is how Slayer developed the faster playing aspect tied with King and his structure to songs

Bad Company has a special place in my heart. We've got a manager at work who wants to be American so bad, to the point where he's wearing the stars and stripes, punisher skull shirts, and riding a Harley Davidson to work etc
Anyways, I'm the music guy at work and he kept requesting FFDP, so naturally this was the first song I put on. From there, a friend and I started taking the piss, saying stuff like "he probably listens to this and fantasises about being in the military". But as time went on it got more and more absurd to the point we were saying shit like "He's getting dropped out of the ac130 whilst he's riding his flying harley, and he's carpet bombing Isis on his own. He even took out osama with nothing but a copy of 'War is the Answer' and an American flag baseball bat bless by Ronald reagan himself" etc
Anyways 10/10 song for me for all the wrong reasons. I'll still spin it up from time to time.

Your opinion differs from many, but you have the right to have it here in America. That’s why you expressed it. That’s great. All I am saying it is, whether you believe it or not, there are many people in our military, who are willing to die to protect that right. Since we don’t have the draft, there are many who enter the military for a paycheck. But that is not close to all of them. There are also many gung ho types who just like death and destruction , but the majority I have met believe they are protecting freedom. I’m not asking anything of you but not to assess all soldiers through the same lens. There, truly are selfless people out there who would die for you and me. Whether you believe that or not is your choice, and I respect that. I would just hope that you would respect any soldier who does have such a selfless mindset. They are out there. And I’d probably argue most of us roll our eyes to anyone who 100% buys into that lifestyle.

"Behind Blue Eyes" was originally one of the songs made for the "Lifehouse" rock opera, a project that sadly never got finished as it was too lofty an ambition at the time. So the project was scrapped, and the Who instead made "Who's Next", widely considered one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. So the lyrics are really part of an overall story that was never released, and not a band on the road song.
Also, the Limp Bizkit cover might be hated because it was on "Results May Vary", a terrible album for multiple reasons.
And on the subject of nu metal, I think that Vanilla Ice album is great. He lost a lot of fans after the Queen debacle, as he rightly should have, but he bounced back in a way. He did the nu metal style well, and gained a surprisingly sizable fanbase. It wasn't the best of the genre, but it was pretty good.

So, the video for Bad Company for Five Finger Death Punch is actually all footage from when they traveled to Iraq to play live shows for the troops. And the awkward footage of them training to clear a hallway was just some ad hoc training that the Army put on for them as a way to say thanks for coming out here to support us. I'm not a huge fan of their music. But in the year I was over there they were the only rock/metal band that came over. They even told us that they had asked some other metal bands they knew to come with them, but they all refused to go because Iraq is dangerous and they were scared.

I really appreciate your take on The Ataris. They are criminally under mentioned and underated.

I liked the Limp Bizkit cover of Behind Blue Eyes when it first came out, not so much the second half, but first half was good. And then I heard the original... Which was way better! So as a cover, it failed. My standard for a good cover is just to make it better than the original and this didn't.
Blue Monday by Orgy is a great cover! They did have a few alright songs but this is their best. Better than the original, I still enjoy hearing it. Great song! No shame to New Order in their original, Orgy just took a good song and made it better.
I have listened to Nirvana Unplugged more than any other album that has ever been made. I cannot express how much I love this album. It's a big yes for me that Nirvana's Man who sold the world is better than David Bowie's. I mean no disrespect to David Bowie in that, he was a great musician. Nirvana Unplugged, for me, was absolute perfection and I freakin love it!
I'm now going to check out Zack's hardcore stuff. I didn't know he did hardcore before Rage and I'm excited to go check it out.

I never had you pegged as being into Orgy. I love that cover version. I played it at the last office winter party and it got people dancing. I still really enjoy the first album too. But could never get into the later stuff.

The reason The Ataris never had another hit was because Kris decided he didn't want to play pop punk anymore. I hung out with some of his (ex-)bandmates quite a bit around 2004 - 2006 and they all told me the same story: Kris wanted to be an artist and do indie-rock; that's fine, but I bought Ataris albums for pop-punk and obscure Weezer covers, not for mandolins or whatever other indie stuff fascinated him.

I gotta say, as I much as I respect Slayer, that Minor Threat cover really left a sour taste in my mouth. Intentional or not, the lyric change really changed the song's meaning for the worse

Finn, I started watching/listening to you a few months ago. I have blazed through your playlist and still have a lot to go. I’m a chef and play 3 or four, if not more, of you videos while I prep. I’ve yet to come across one I didn’t like. Oh sure, bring a metal head, I’ve disagreed with you from time to time but that’s ok. You got me thinking on other avenues. My favorite content are your Twitch videos. “Gotta check that drip!” Keep it up man, your content rocks!

@@ThePunkRockMBA your channel is great. you don’t have to interject how much you love law enforcement and the military whenever the opportunity presents itself, you’re not running for office or (hopefully not) trying to land a gig on Fox. Free speech isn’t the product our trillion dollar a year military budget, I know you know better than this
Fwiw I’m a veteran but also grew up in the 90s DIY punk/hc scene same as you. I know your opinion is more nuanced than you let on but come on…

Got a few suggestions for the next vid.
Type O Negative's version of "Summer Breeze", Skindred "Electric Avenue" and Motorhead's version of "Heroes"
You should do one the other way, pop artists covering punk and rock/metal songs.
2 notable ones I remember, but not for good reasons, were Take That covering "Teen Spirit" and All Saints covering "Under the Bridge"

You should do a video covers that are better than the original. My picks (even tho no one asked) Orgy - Blue Monday (New Order), Type O Negative - Hey Pete (Hey Joe The Leaves) Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young), Day Tripper (The Beatles), Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush), Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (The Eurythmics), Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden), The Ramones - Needles & Pins (The Searchers), Sid Vicious - My Way (Frank Sanatra) & of course The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) and I’m sure there’s a bunch more escaping me atm.
