Regarding the "Too many people" story. The OP isn't mad that they were replaced, they are mad that they were manipulated into staying longer than they wanted to by being told that they were irreplaceable and that if they left the game would have to be rebalanced rather than bringing someone new in. It seems to me the reason they are upset is they were manipulated into staying for that reason, and then the reason was immediately proven a lie when the DM does in fact manage to replace them. I could be incorrect but that seems to be the reason.
Hi, OP here for that second story Yeah you hit the nail on the head. I think the confusion came from my poor spelling. 'Basement' was supposed to be, 'Replacement' So I apologize for the confusion. That does seem like it's on me
Listening to story one's exchange: "She looks just like your mother" "My mother died in childbirth", as a DM I would be scrambling to rewrite that NPC into some sort of Cartesian Demon that can cause such things.
"This woman, clearly magical in nature, seems to be using a face she thinks you'll trust, not knowing you never saw her." Then boom, you can go manipulative demon, or misguided (actually terrifying looking) faery godmother.
That one guy wasn't just being pissy that the DM was replacing them. Sounds like they were mad because the only reason they stayed longer than they wanted to was because they got guilted because the DM said they couldn't be replaced, then found out that was a lie and a backup was in line all along.
So the whole "daddy" thing is usually used to play with power dynamics in a consenting relationship. This is fine until it leaves the bed, because the moment it leaves the bed and reaches a point of effecting life and daily interactions... *Then* its definitely giving Oedipus.
I mean, that really depends on how you go about it. You can do non-sexual kink, or it can be part of normal flirtation/banter. The important thing is that you can draw an appropriate line between kinky situations and non-kinky situations, which this polycule clearly couldn't.
Yes, he wanted to leave but the DM guilt tripped him into staying by saying that they could not replace him, so he was manipulated into staying in longer than he wanted to because he was told his leaving would be a huge problem.
Hey Crispy! For the friend drama thing Im pretty sure that its that the OP says that the DM had the friend lined up as his replacement even BEFORE he decided to leave, despite telling them they were irreplaceable which was kind of manipulative, I hope that helps clear it up!
19:30 okay he wasn’t upset that he was replaced, he was upset that the DM played mind games with him to get him to stay when he voiced wanting to leave. His friend lied to him, saying he was irreplaceable (and thus guilt tripping him into staying longer) when someone else was just waiting in the wings to take over.
That last story sounds like the “joined a role play group, turns out it wasn’t that kind of role play” joke, if it was even sleazier. Seriously, he should have just met the local BDSM club and made it a full thing, not sprung it on someone without their knowledge or consent.

So you either spent ki on spells which you run out off too quickly, and are not as effective as the wizards spell, or don't use them and have basically a subclass that doesn't do much. unlike other subclasses which either grant bonuses to existing features, or an upgrade that can be used at least ones, this subclasses drains ki so much it's rarely worth the effort. Still, the concept is cool, and there are a lot of revisions/fixes for it, and if strength is an issue you can always discuss it with your dm.
Also, quite a few of those disciplines are traps, meaning there's only one or two good ways to build a 4 Elements Monk, and the rest of those abilities are noob traps. You either play 4 Elements for fun (i.e. 5e Avatar the Last Airbender), or play something else (especially if it's a combat heavy game with an emphasis on optimization).
That’s my story in the intro. Thanks Crispy! I have a lot more to say about Jack and I’ll tell you when I have some time. Also that skit was very funny and pretty much how it felt at the time.
12:57-13:44 tbf this is kind of how two of my OCs got together. Spy tries to get closer to and seduce the hero to spy on her better, ends up falling in love with her instead.
7:33 yeah I one time was brainstorming with a dm before the group session 0 on my character. They kept trying to have my character be some epic foretold hero or the like…I point blanks stopped them and said that, while the idea was cool, it isn’t what I wanted out of a game nor was the story I wanted to tell. What I did want, I explained, was a character who is with the party because they care about them and wants to protect them but is really just trying their best with what resources they got and whatever they are good at. I’m going to play them that way and want to keep it that way. We could plan other arc stuff, but no “chosen one” destiny tropes. That dm did concede on this and we are having a ton of fun these days in that campaign. Some of the rest of the party got their “chosen one” treatment and are loving it and I’m happy with my role too, which is exactly what I asked for. I’m not excluded and I can do what I want with the role and my dm listened when I spoke up, so I’m glad I did. To be fair though, I did give the dm another hook for this character, which is that their adoptive parent is powerful, but has enemies that see my character as a weakness to exploit and take an emotional stab at said adoptive parent. This is one of the big motivations my character has to get stronger and learn their craft, namely because they don’t want to be the weak link for their adoptive parent who they care deeply about and want to also protect as much as they can. So this helped in that my character still can have a “corruption arc” but not be a chosen on. For context on that, my character is a hexblood and has the notice of a hag who hates the adoptive parent of my hexblood. Said hag is trying to corrupt my hexblood into a hag as a blow to my character’s adoptive parent. The campaign is a bit horror themed in a lot of areas (despite the humor the party and I contrast it with) so this storyline lends itself to the theme. Dm and I have spoken on the idea that the corruption might eventually lead the party to have to take out my character if things go wrong and they become a hag. I look forward to either result, the corruption of the triumph of my character in gaining enough power to combat their foe. Either seems like a satisfying outcome for a storyline. What can I say, I love storytelling, even the tragedies. By the way, I was reminded of this because of the contrast between my dm listening to my preference in storytelling and the op here. I wish them well in their future games however. It’s nice when you can collaborate properly with a dm. Makes for some of my coolest memories for sessions that the party still talks about.
So I went to double check and the dude in the foreshadowing clip is some guy named Evan and not James Somerton. I can see why people say they look familiar though.
For the first story, I had an similar issue, but it was more-so that I thought the recharge 5-6 meant 5 to 6 rounds. Meaning: I've been having underpowered monsters my entire campaign... oops...
Y'know, to play Devil's Advocate a little bit: In the intro story, the DM COULD have misunderstood how Recharge works, since it doesn't say exactly how it functions in the tool tip. As funny as this sounds to people who know how it or game balance in general works, but the DM may have believed it meant the breath weapon has 5-6 charges before it has to recharge. Just a thought.
Yeeeeah, it's a bad idea to mix pleasure with pleasure. Especially 2 sessions in! And with someone relatively new to the group you are a part of! Like, just straight up offering to bring them in on your hanky-panky stuff, before even asking if that's something they are into?!!!
I'm the one who submitted that story and I gotta say, at the time, I did think he was gonna be the kind of DM I could trust with it. I had known him nearly 10 year already at the time and the way he talked about the story of the world he was building was so cool I thought he'd respect my characters story. Woops. XD Edit: After that I actually started catering my characters to the vibes of the table specifically and not investing too much in who they are or where I want their story to go in the future. They have motivations but the rest is out of my hands. It means I don't stress when he does stuff like that anymore. 😅 My more heart wrenching or special characters are saved to play with my other group.
Just adding yet another comment to the pile, since apparently nobody saw that Crispy already pinned one that explained it - they were bullied by DM, replaced after being called irreplaceable.
12:58 yooooo double cyclone and just deserts. the last thing I expected too see was yugioh cards that l would find in the closet after 10 years of not touching them
The RIP to my backstory story reminds me of a very short thing I sent to you which I'll post below: So, back in college in the 90s, I found a PbP group running Champions, a point buy superhero game. It was a shared universe thing with multiple games running and I applied to a couple though didn't have much luck, then I got accepted for a game and presented a character with the following traits: Superhero name: Couatl off the D&D creature because of a feather and scale motif. Japanese-American (because despite being a boring American, Toshiro Mifune, Sho Kosugi, Studio Ghibli, and Godzilla were a significant portion of my childhood and had recently gotten into Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo.) Female Teenager 16 Origin: Experimented on unethical uncle. (no I hadn't caught Evangelion yet) Powers: creating extra limbs as needed with stretching, wall-climbing, and increased physical strength and agility. (not very couatl-ish I know) The GM "approved" the character with the following changes: Change ethnicity to Mexican because Quetzacouatl is a Mexican myth. (Aztec, but meh) Change age to 19, no reason stated Change to male (GM doesn't like people playing other than their own gender) Change origin to mutant associated villain is no longer related. No reason given. I played a couple of rounds of the initial combat, bowed out, and just didn't deal with that community again. And the character concept mostly died for a decade. Given these days I don't like to play or deal with minor characters and the abusive origin could be an issue, I understand that and would likely have adjusted if asked about it... but no conversation was had with me. He just took the power set I had and changed most everything else about the character.
11:41 - another way to go is to have monk or one of the other PCs eavesdrop on the ‘aunt’ and overhear that monk isn’t actually the long lost princess, she’s just some rando (from ‘aunt’s’ pov at least) that just happens to look enough like how the long lost princess is supposed to look in a Prince and the Pauper sorta way, that the ‘aunt’ can use them to further her own political goals. Only problem with this secret plot line is if it’s not handled correctly by a skilled DM it can come across as something the DM has pulled out of their ass in response to the backlash from the player to the princess ‘reveal’.
Honestly that would have been pretty cool! If he introduced the Aunt like "She kind of looks like... you?! *gasp*" and then have it turned into some weird and evil demon pact or political intrigue stuff, that would be cool! 😅 No long lost Princess stuff- just drama. Lol
Oh my god immediately for the first one I could relate because I mistook 'per combat' for 'per turn' on a boss creation with regards to legendary actions I had help making so the dude was able to just casually add extra smite damage every turn and it just wrecked the party I was DMing. Didn't realize it until I just about killed the Cleric and I had to write my way out of it after admitting my screwup
The daddy thing is definitely a kink. Paticularly with older men…im not saying my barbarian IS a daddy…but he does have a son… Look, daddy issues are a big problem XD
As an allo in a poly relationship, no this is not normal. Ew. Glad OP got away from... That. Also, the more I listen to these the more I realize my ace wife and crispy share similar thoughts on friend drama and the allos, lol.
Hey Crispy. Just want to let you know, your skit about relationships is basically how my wife and I started dating. We're both Bi so that might be something exclusive to us.
Crispy. They are angry about being replaced because they were manipulated into staying in the game for a whole arc after they wanted to leave by the whole 'irreplaceable' line, then replaced once they had been used for the dm's storyline.
Trap Card; Max Rizz. any rizz type spell card played by the opponent automatically equalizes the rizz of the trap player. if the opponent has reached maximum rizz, then the player reaches max rizz, negating all negative effects of rizz
That monk story is EXACTLY why they really need to make reconsider how they design Monk. So much of the wording and imagery of the class is used assuming that you're just going to play the bog standard temple monk, which just creates stupid situations like that one. It's the Paladin problem or Barbarian problem. Players have to go out of their way to reflavour and remove themselves from the source inspiration.
The RIP to the backstory I can absolutely sympathise with - we had multiple players have their backstories completely destroyed by a DM we played with. Despite everyone having given their backstory information to the DM in a collaborative manner and having received little to no response apart from 'that's fine. It was tough to care about the game after that - the one person who wanted their backstory to be quite sweet had their entire society changed to insane murderers, three of us had tied our backstory to the Order we were part of, only to have the Order be practically non-existent. What did exist was so altered beyond our original idea it may as well have not been there. My 'half-werewolf' rescued by the Order turned out to be King of the shifters whose 'power' was severely reduced by what the Order did to him (So the 'specialness' of his werewolf backstory became completely cheap when it turned out his entire village was apparently shifters. It could have been a fun story but it so negated all of of the original character concepts that it was really the final nail in the coffin of that campaign for me). The 'last of a noble royal bloodline' character ended up being a descendant of despots who where obsessed with slavery, blood and destruction. It was a mess. I learnt from that as a DM that surprises can be fun, but it's more important to discuss with the player whether they want what you have planned or not. Backstory surprises are only done with permission or if I know the player really well. Always communicate with your players!
Yeah, I'm gonna say that it's not a matter of being replaced, it's a matter of the DM not only lying that the player was essential, and secretly having a replacement already in the wings, but also essentially bringing in the replacement RIGHT AS THEY WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE, WHEN THEY WERE STILL ON THE FENCE. I've had to replace people as well, but I never lied to a player that "I have no replacement" when I actually had a replacement in the wings. And, I never tried to keep them past when they were comfortable, by guilting them.
I don't know what the hell was going on with the group in the last story, but "Bill" turning out to be a narcissist makes a lot of sense. I'm just glad that OP dipped when they did.
I made two attempts to play with a certain DM (a friend of the family who played regularly with my parents and i wanted to join) and there were issues from the first moment. He didn't listen to my character concept (i wanted to play a half elf and he made me play a halfling) and i asked if it would be possible to have my character follow at a distance for a while so i could sit in on a few sessions to get a feel for the gameplay and characters (because i knew NOTHING about dnd at the time) and he said no, and threw me in the deep end of this campaign with no knowledge and i naturally floundered. In the end i had no fun and didn't come back...until they started a new game and i decided I'd like to try again, but i still didn't know the rules and i felt like an outsider from the beginning. I kinda decided i wouldn't play with that DM again. My parents found another dm that sounded really fun and interesting (more roleplay heavy. Starting from LVL 0. You start off with a job and decide to start adventuring during the early game. Ie: my stepfather played a very original dwarf blacksmith who would eventually go on to be a barbarian and he started adventuring as a way to test a new style of weapon he had just created. All of my stepfather's characters were decendents of each other and so were basically all the same)
As someone with a Kobold monk of the four elements I don't care I love them. Also what the heck not exactly but similar backstory my monk is from a family guild and learned woodwork and metalsmith. 😅😂❤
The reason I assume OP in the story with the muscular barbarian women is upset about being replaced ISN'T because he's being replaced, but because the DM guilt tripped him into staying by saying he couldn't replace him, that's why I think he's upset.
I've had sone monents with Recharge. My party fought a mind flayer and his six kobold servants. He rolls high on initiative and starts the fight with a mind blast! About half the party fails, the turn order advances. His turn rolls around again, I pick up the D6 and roll a 6. So, mind blast! His next turn, I get a 5, so mind blast! Rinse and repeat until the entire party is down. I just kept using mind blast and it just kept working.
19:11 I think what the guy is getting at is he would have left a while ago, but he was lied to and told he was irreplaceable. I'm sure he doesn't care what happens in the campaign from there on out, he's upset that his time was wasted by someone who lied to him. I'd be upset if someone used me and my friends like that too.
Seeing the first story i realize i've been wrong as a DM for like more than a year, i thought the number in recharge was hos many turns the thing had to wait to use it again
The group having a designated "daddy" at least one member wants to make jealous makes me think it's a harem. I apologize if that is incorrect, I don't know anything about these "polycules".
There were 4 of us, no party cohesion and the Rogue did not participate- she literally ran away after the first round because the wizard got turned to stone. I think there were 3 or 4 Gorgons? It was pathetic and rage inducing, ngl. Stood there fighting basically alone as 4 elements Monk. 🤦🏻♀️
One of my favorite things about Monks is that their name can be a total mislead. I have a monk who wouldn’t be caught dead in a monastery. Instead, they’re a dancer, and they fight with epic kicks. Also, they’re kind of a ho.
I was confused by the sudden mention of Jack, like I was confused if he and Bill were the same person. Not even 100% sure if Bill and "daddy" are the same.
I'm totally into romantic entanglements and even I balk at the thought of having multiple partners. So, I can't explain that one either. As for the daddy/mommy thing, surely even you have heard someone say "oh, that's my sugar daddy". It's a specific kind of relationship dynamic that shouldn't have anything to do with one's actual parents.
Even then, it’s a spectrum. Sometimes there is a sugar baby/sugar daddy arrangement, sometimes it’s a BDSM thing, sometimes it’s just referring to older male partners as “daddies”.
If you want to be a father figure in a group play someone like a demon-touched human cleric cursed to live forever who was mostly a hermit and only recently started leaving to experience towns again. Maybe a little mad but your patience is key.
Regarding the "Too many people" story. The OP isn't mad that they were replaced, they are mad that they were manipulated into staying longer than they wanted to by being told that they were irreplaceable and that if they left the game would have to be rebalanced rather than bringing someone new in. Okay, thaaaat makes sense. I was so confused
That's how the situation read to me too.
This was my EXACT read I'm happy someone said it way more eloquently than I ever could AND that Crispy saw it.
Hi, OP here for that second story
Yeah you hit the nail on the head. I think the confusion came from my poor spelling. 'Basement' was supposed to be, 'Replacement'

Yeah I felt it was pretty clear that the player was more pissed about being used and manipulated than the replacement lmfao
So the whole "daddy" thing is usually used to play with power dynamics in a consenting relationship.

@@ArcCaravan There were multiple jacks.
The point was not that the player was replaced, it was that they were after being "held hostage" by being told, they are irreplacable.
Reads the title, sees the thumbnail
"Ah, it's one of these stories."
I WAS WRONG I COULDN'T HAVE PREDICTED HOW THAT LAST STORY WENT
That was just nuts, seriously how does one effectively respond to a story like that last one? I can't do it.
Same
Oy vey.
@@ArcCaravan I suppose that works on some level.
For the second one, I feel like if you're gonna bring an OC you really care abt into a campaign you should really trust the DM lmao
More like the DM has to be really trustworthy.
I'm the one who submitted that story and I gotta say, at the time, I did think he was gonna be the kind of DM I could trust with it. I had known him nearly 10 year already at the time and the way he talked about the story of the world he was building was so cool I thought he'd respect my characters story. Woops. XD
Edit:
After that I actually started catering my characters to the vibes of the table specifically and not investing too much in who they are or where I want their story to go in the future.
I sent my pan friend this video and he saw the title and refused to watch it sober.
Merry early Christmas Crispy.
"and if it's giving, it's giving Oedipus" keeps making me laugh so hard grthrthrthtr poor crispy
22:40 as a local aroace THANKS FOR ALSO SAYING THIS I'VE BEEN PERMA CONFUSED FOREVER
edit: btw it's my birthday on NYE so 🎉🎉🎉
12:58 yooooo double cyclone and just deserts. the last thing I expected too see was yugioh cards that l would find in the closet after 10 years of not touching them
"Giving Oedipus" Thank you Crispy.
That last story was INSANE!!!!
So many questions... none of which I want to be answered.
Happy holidays everyone! Enjoy your break, Crispy
Amazing video as aways, not that I finished it, but I cant imagine it not being entretaining.
The RIP to my backstory story reminds me of a very short thing I sent to you which I'll post below:
So, back in college in the 90s, I found a PbP group running Champions, a point buy superhero game. It was a shared universe thing with multiple games running and I applied to a couple though didn't have much luck, then I got accepted for a game and presented a character with the following traits:
Superhero name: Couatl off the D&D creature because of a feather and scale motif.
Japanese-American (because despite being a boring American, Toshiro Mifune, Sho Kosugi, Studio Ghibli, and Godzilla were a significant portion of my childhood and had recently gotten into Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo.)
Female
Teenager 16
Origin: Experimented on unethical uncle. (no I hadn't caught Evangelion yet)
Powers: creating extra limbs as needed with stretching, wall-climbing, and increased physical strength and agility. (not very couatl-ish I know)
The GM "approved" the character with the following changes:
Change ethnicity to Mexican because Quetzacouatl is a Mexican myth. (Aztec, but meh)
Change age to 19, no reason stated
Change to male (GM doesn't like people playing other than their own gender)
Change origin to mutant associated villain is no longer related.
Lol
I think with the replacement story its more the DM lying to OP to keep them in the game longer then the actual replacement.
“I Don’t Even Know...”
There’s a title of foreboding danger if I ever read one.
I only have one line going through my head after hearing that last story. "What the F*** is wrong with people?!"
The daddy thing is definitely a kink.
Paticularly with older men…im not saying my barbarian IS a daddy…but he does have a son…
Look, daddy issues are a big problem XD
I'd like to hear more about the DM that nuked his DMPC with half dragons.
As an allo in a poly relationship, no this is not normal. Ew. Glad OP got away from... That. Also, the more I listen to these the more I realize my ace wife and crispy share similar thoughts on friend drama and the allos, lol.
22:29 I can relate to this so much, I've never got the whole "daddy/mommy" fetish, thing that people online seem so obsessed with.
Hey Crispy.
Just want to let you know, your skit about relationships is basically how my wife and I started dating.
We're both Bi so that might be something exclusive to us.
Machine gun dragon
Awww, RIP Jocat.
Great way to end the year 😂😂😂
It's always a good night when Crispy uploads :)
"Signal him for meetup"
So... he has a permanent bootie call brand? I dig it
Yu-Gi-Oh seduction sketch ftw
Happy holidays Crispy.
The seduction bit was peak comedy 😂
21:10 Oh, they’re were definitely playing “Smash” :P
happy new year
That monk story is EXACTLY why they really need to make reconsider how they design Monk.
Ok so I realize now that recharge works differently than I expected but at least I knew better than to spam abilities with recharge
Love the SpongeBob time card 😂
Y'know, as an ace in a relationship with a demi? Romance being like Yu-Gi-Oh is accurate.
The reason I assume OP in the story with the muscular barbarian women is upset about being replaced ISN'T because he's being replaced, but because the DM guilt tripped him into staying by saying he couldn't replace him, that's why I think he's upset.
The idea of Uno reversing seduction us pretty funny to me. Gives me some enemies to lovers vibes
If Elitist Crispy means more Latin Music im all for them running the show 🤣
I've had sone monents with Recharge.
If it’s not from the Champaign region of France then technically it’s just a sparkling adventure :D
Making an AP Style joke in my comments gets you 10x🍌
Seeing the first story i realize i've been wrong as a DM for like more than a year, i thought the number in recharge was hos many turns the thing had to wait to use it again
Call me Dungeon Daddy.
13:39 Oh. So Kaguya sama: love is war? That's what you are describing.
What... was that?
Seriously though, DMing for a polycule can be... worrying, at times.
The group having a designated "daddy" at least one member wants to make jealous makes me think it's a harem. I apologize if that is incorrect, I don't know anything about these "polycules".
Weird how that last story offered no context until shit hit the fan. Mentioned his partners so casually.
That's it, we did it! We killed Crispy. x)
But yeah, I agree ahout the mommy/daddy thing.
TPK from a few Gorgons? At that level? couldn’t be me.
Unfortunately, everyone in that level 9 party were...gor-goners.
...except the rogue i guess, but y'know.
Look, I'm an allo, and I've never understood the "daddy" thing either.
for the gorgons, the writer probably meant medusas instead? in mythology medusa is a specific gorgon
@16:30 Karlach is the best girl in the game, by far.
If its a woman with a "daddy" complex it would be called an Electra complex, not Oedipus complex.
The last story felt like there was huge chunks missing.
ACTUALLY, the activated Trapcard is "Just Deserts" xD Not "Hickey" xD
If you want to be a father figure in a group play someone like a demon-touched human cleric cursed to live forever who was mostly a hermit and only recently started leaving to experience towns again. Maybe a little mad but your patience is key.
