I'm really amazed. 3 great games in 1 week. Chernobylite, Ascent and Grime. How rare especially since they are priced right. Not AAA titles but it goes to show there are good games for everyone at every budget. I never thought I'd enjoy these games as much as I am.
I swear to god, where are all these games coming from?? Death's Door, The Ascent, Eldest Souls, and now this one. I never heard a whiff about these games before release and now I feel like I'm tripping over all of these good games that came outta nowhere!
Indie games bro, everyone should pay more atention to them, there is a lot of good stuff coming out every month besides AAA games. There are also many great youtube channels strictly dedicated to indies games, like Get Indie Gaming, ClemmyGames etc
@@arthurgadelha9430 See, I follow those channels, but I didn't see them mentioned there either! Maybe I've only been watching the occasional vid by them, but I've seen a few "Top Upcoming Indies" from there channels and I feel like all the games I mentioned weren't on there. Oh well, I'm not complaining. If anything, it's nice to be surprised by an awesome game that comes outta nowhere. Takes me back to the good old days where you'd just walk into the video store and BAM, a new game that looks awesome was just sitting there on the shelf.
I normally don't enjoy Soulslikes, but I feel Grime has made enough quality of life improvements to the genre, and I'm really digging it. For example, there's almost always a shortcut you can open between a major boss and a save point, so there's no need to run through 20 minutes of normal enemies just to make another attempt at the boss. Also, not having to do a corpse run to recover your mass is definitely nice, and allows you to stretch into unexplored dangerous territory more readily. You still feel the tension of being in over your head, far from safety, and low on health and all that... but I actually go into these dangerous environments MORE readily knowing I won't lose a huge cache of currency if I die. Furthermore, the slow, methodical rhythm of combat simply feels better in a 2D environment imo. There's no janky camera to fight with, the attacks and hitboxes are very readable, etc. The video compares Grime to Hollow knight and Ori, and as examples of great Metroidvanias I think that's fair... but Grime does NOT have those game's combat rhythms at all. Those games are based heavily on agility, and combat is very fast with animation cancelling, unlimited dashing, etc. Grime locks you into slow animations, all your combat abilities are attached to a stamina bar, and it has fewer opportunities for healing. In that sense, combat feels extremely different in Grime.
I completely agree. I'd compare it more tô blasphemous than to Ori or HK, seeing how in this game you should treat every enemy as a little game of parrying and attacking
I've been playing this game on Stadia because it's included with the Pro subscription, it feels really good, I've beat the first boss and I'll definitely carry on playing.

Metroidvania's are Indie Dev's Favorite genre to create as far as I've seen in the last few Years. Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom, both Ori Games, and Shantae are some really great ones that are short but sweet.
@@janky477 Rather than favorite, it's just the ones that gets a lot of attention. There's even still FMV games being released by indie devs nowadays. But of course, they aren't as popular.

And I finished it enough times to say that I like that genre of games, despite never playing souls-like before. The team behind the game are cool people, they worked on this game for years! Another 2d sidescroller that's big on parry mechanics is Eastern Exorcist. That game is basically a 2D Sekiro: Chinese mythology edition. Grime is pretty awesome, so far.
This one went below my radar, and I'm very happy to have found it. Not picked a system to play it on yet, but I've read that it's unplayable on last gen consoles due to frame drops and frame pacing issues, lags and screen tearing. That sucks, but is somewhat expected from a indie game made in Unity.
I love Grime, so much so that I willingly played it on a computer that couldn´t handle the game and lagged so much it took me several dozen tries to defeat a boss. Now the DLC is out, and free if you already own Grime, and I started a new safe file to do it all over again, and loving it even more. It's worth full price, if you need to have it cheaper it is on sale for another two days on steam. I paid the same amount I paid for Hollow Knight and both of them are in my top 5 games of all time. So give it a try if you like Metroidvanias with some great icky designs and hefty gameplay.

Gameranx: And we're back with another episode of Before You Buy.... Me: Yay! An new game released! Literally the only way I keep up to date on new releases.
I’m probably halfway through this game so far (I think). Got it for free on Epic about a month go. SO glad I’m trying it out! Absolutely amazing game, especially if you love Souls & Metroid style games. The music is beautiful & the atmosphere is unnerving. The combat is very fluid. Boss fights are hard, but fair. Very rewarding when you unlock new abilities. Honestly 9/10 rating only because the story is a little hard to understand
Just beat this game. Tbh, it's a 7.5/10 It's good but it's not great, and I had quite a few complaints by the end and I LOVE metroidvanias so I would say if your not a huge fan, it's probably more of a 6/10. My biggest complaint: you don't get fast travel until basically the very end of the game but get this, if you beat the 2nd or 3rd boss without doing a quest and also finding some incredibly hidden areas, you will straight up miss content. An optional boss disappears along with some item/items from a quest. And exploring before you get fast travel is TEDIOUS, so you probably won't go back to see that you missed until it's too late. Makes absolutely 0 sense. Also, I went strength stat and regretted it the entire game. Literally 90% of the weapons are dexterity. And big slow weapons are just a liability.. they leave you open to attack for too long and costs way too much stamina to use.
I am voice outside the crowd, but when you use Souls-like elements with a not linear, articulated map, the end result is not a Metroidvania, for a number of reasons. On a Metroidvania you clear several rooms before getting stuck and need some thinking and backtracking to proceed; on a game like this, on the other hands, fight is heavier (slower, with stamina, dodge etc.) spawning points and checkpoints are fewer and trial and error is predominant. Is a genre on its own, with it's own tension, but not necessarily something you play to chill, explore and see what that locked room will lead to.
@@melxb I played a bit on my backbone via Stadia and I have to say it’s better on a bigger display. There’s a lot of text and attributes about your inventory which are tough to perceive clearly on a small display
