My top Irish & British thriller authors as follows and in and in no particular order. Claire McGowan ( The Lost and Dead Ground), Claire Douglas (The Couple at No 9 & Just Like the Other Girls), Andrea Mara ( All Her Fault & The Sleeper Lies), Clare MacKintosh (Let Me In, I See You & The Last Party), Lucy Foley ( The Guest List), TM Logan ( The Curfew, Lies & The Catch), Denise Mina (The Long Drop, Still Midnight & The End of the Wasp Season), Fiona Barton (The Window & The Child), and Gillian McAllister (Wrong Place Wrong Time) 📚
Have you read The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard? To me that’s a true thriller, I could not put it down. On a note I loved The Quiet Tenant, I just felt like it said so much and the writing was beautiful. I don’t remember if it’s in the acknowledgments, but the author is French, English is not her first language, yet she wrote this beautiful novel in English herself.
I feel like everyone is in this boat with thrillers 😭 horror has been INCREDIBLE though, in my opinion-- though I've been reading some books from a few years ago, as well as new horror.
This was fun! You should do this with other genres or authors (even if you already have a 5 star) or! You could go off those 5 themes you used (classic, new author, 2023 etc) and slot books in to try and get a 5 star!
Oh. My. Freaking. Gosh. Went off and read The Other Side of Night after watching this and just want to thank you for posting about this book. It’s a favorite of mine and I cried my eyes out in the last quarter of that book😆 without giving away the main theme, I’m off to reading the book Adam Hamdy studied to write TOSON on neuroscience and physics. Mind is still just blown.
Even if I enjoy it, I rarely give Thrillers 5⭐ .. it's harder to hit that mark in that genre for me. One 5⭐ from last year was a Psychological Thriller called How Can I Help You by Laura Sims. Another close one was a YA Thriller called Lord of the Fly Fest by Goldy Moldavsky because it was just so fun!
Thrillers used to be my most read genre but I feel like it’s so hard to get a good one let alone a 5⭐️ that I now read more horror & fantasy but Im always on the lookout for thrillers that are doing something different! Really enjoyed this video!!🥰
Been out out reading for a while, but I think being in one genre for long eventually runs dry. 😂 Oh, and btw, I think Abducted is a better term for Kidnapping when it’s an adult.
I read Sometimes I Lie earlier this year and was very disappointed as well. I did not enjoy Things we do in the Dark either. My favorite Jennifer Hillier is Wonderland, I believe I gave it 5 stars. My only 5 star thrillers so far this year have been Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth and Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica. I really think you will love Darling Girls!
Wonderland is the only book I’ve yet to read by Jennifer Hillier. My personal favorite from her was creep, I read it a few years ago and it was one of my first in the genre but it was so good!😅
Hated "Sometimes I lie". I immediately ordered "The other side of night" because I was in a huge funk. I have dnf'd the last three books I've tried but this one sounds good.
As someone who just found your channel, may i recommend thrillers from the 1990s and early 2000s. I am not sure what kind of thriller you enjoy but these are some that have been enjoyed by me and mine: Kathy Reichs: deja dead (Audio book read by Barbara Rosenblatt) this is the series the tv show Bones is based on. Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peter's (Barbara Rosenblatt reads the audio books). Most books by Robin Cook. The Pelican Brief by John Grisham. Kiss the Girls. Michael Chrition, JD Robb, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.
Girl, the last 5 star thriller I've read was in february... LAST YEAR. I technically had one in October too, but it was like a blend between thriller and horror. So yeah. Feel ya. I haven't had a 5 star in general this year yet, and it's honestly tragic.
I have a vintage recommendation for you. I read my 1st thriller in my early teens back in the 60's. The memory of it still haunts me. It is The Collector by John Fowles. I think you might like it. The genre might be "literary thriller" if that's a thing.
Picked up Escape Room by Megan Goldin and it was a 5 star for me. It wasn't what I expected and loved how the main character thought out and planned her strategy.
7:38 that reminds me a certain book... a CoHo book... so predictable.. and a horrible book too. Read it in early 2022 when I first discovered booktube and had no idea what I was doing lol
I love thrillers and they are rarely 5 stars for me. 😂 Then again, I seldom have 5 star reads. I'm pretty picky about what I consider 5 stars. If I gave up on books because I couldn't find a 5 star book, I'd have to stop reading.
I added the other side of night to my tbr after seeing a few people I follow on goodreads say the exact same thing as you did. Weird, confusing, but entertaining and heartfelt
I’m definitely in my mystery phase. Those have been hitting for me much better than thrillers recently. It’s been a long time since I gave a thriller 5 stars.
I haven’t read as many this year yet, but I haven’t found a 5 ⭐️ thriller yet either and need to. Maybe I’ll give The Other Side of Night a shot, it’s on my TBR. It was SO hard not to tap and see how much video was left but I resisted so I could be in suspense for the video 😂 I enjoyed Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier but I also picked it up completely randomly for a reading challenge and had no expectations at all…so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it 🤷🏼♀️
Uhh when you said Alice Feeney for a start, I was just like “oh no, no way“. I read Rock Paper Scissors and gave it 2,5 stars because it felt so over-constructed… 🙈😅
I don't much anymore, I find most of the books now are cookie cutter types. But Nicola Vath: The Rule of Three by Donald Nelson, this one actually had a new storyline to it. It's a the first book of a trilogy. But I am hooked.
Audrey J Cole “The recipient” Is about this serial killer that is executed and donated his organs, a year later, killings exactly like his are starting to happen again, so we follow different perspectives, of several people that could have done it, or, is the recipient the one that adapted this guy’s MO ? The audiobook is on Libby, no wait, and it has different voice actors so it’s more like a movie. Look up this author, I don’t think she is well known on booktok but should be, I’m planning a long reading weekend! Prom weekend for my kids, reading weekend for me 😂 I hope you find a 5 star soon!
lol I read sometimes I lie when I first started booktube a long time ago… and it was one of my first thrillers I ever read and I was mindblown lol… I feel like if I read it now I would not be a fan 😂
I totally disagree Sometimes I Lie is at least a 4! I love trillers that don’t spell things out for you in a bow. You gave away some of the twist, so can’t subscribe 🤨
I also wasn’t a fan of things we do in the dark!! 🫠 I do really enjoy some of Jennifer Hillier’s books though! My favorites are Jar of Hearts and The Butcher, so maybe one of those could work for you! 👀
I went back and watched your book club live show on it after finishing bc I needed to feel validated & it helped so much 😅 I’ll definitely check out one/both of those!
I feel this, the more thrillers you read the more similar and predictable they become. It takes a lot for one to really shock me
“Do I still like thrillers?” Girl SAME😂
My top Irish & British thriller authors as follows and in and in no particular order. Claire McGowan ( The Lost and Dead Ground), Claire Douglas (The Couple at No 9 & Just Like the Other Girls), Andrea Mara ( All Her Fault & The Sleeper Lies), Clare MacKintosh (Let Me In, I See You & The Last Party), Lucy Foley ( The Guest List), TM Logan ( The Curfew, Lies & The Catch), Denise Mina (The Long Drop, Still Midnight & The End of the Wasp Season), Fiona Barton (The Window & The Child), and Gillian McAllister (Wrong Place Wrong Time) 📚
I think the better place to start with Jennifer Hillier is Jar Of Hearts
Yeah…her ones outside of that have all been disappointing.
Have you read The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard? To me that’s a true thriller, I could not put it down.

You: "I'm going to start with 'Sometimes I Lie'."
Me: "Yeah no." 🤣🤣
I feel like thrillers are the genre that companies want to just pump out as many books as possible but don't care about quality. Along with romance.
Yeah I have the same feeling. Although they are the most popular genres, the quality sometimes is just missing. :(
I feel like everyone is in this boat with thrillers 😭 horror has been INCREDIBLE though, in my opinion-- though I've been reading some books from a few years ago, as well as new horror.
just what I needed while getting ready for work ✨

Same for me. To give 5 stars, a book really has to have something special/ ‘valuable‘ and as much as I like thrillers, they rarely do that for me. 😅
@@lilydelacour I've given out way more 6⭐ to Horror SciFi and Fantasy 😆
Thrillers used to be my most read genre but I feel like it’s so hard to get a good one let alone a 5⭐️ that I now read more horror & fantasy but Im always on the lookout for thrillers that are doing something different! Really enjoyed this video!!🥰
The Other Side of the Night let’s gooooooo!!! 😍 I love that one ahhh so excited to see you love it too!! 👏
It was top tier!!! So glad I finally picked it up!
Been out out reading for a while, but I think being in one genre for long eventually runs dry. 😂
Oh, and btw, I think Abducted is a better term for Kidnapping when it’s an adult.
I loved The Other Side of Night. It was so unique❤❤❤
Me too. It was one of my first books from Aardvark Book Club!
Loved The Quiet Tenant, I rated it the same as you, not quite a 5. I will have to give The Other Side of Night a try!
Have you read where Sleeping Girls Lie or The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland?
Awwww nooo I wish you had chosen a different Jennifer Hillier lol. I hated that book (literally one star) but I loved Jar of Hearts and The Butcher 🤩
I really enjoyed The Quiet Tenant! 🎉
I read Sometimes I Lie earlier this year and was very disappointed as well. I did not enjoy Things we do in the Dark either. My favorite Jennifer Hillier is Wonderland, I believe I gave it 5 stars. New subscriber (April 30th 2024) looking for book recs, your video came up, looking forward to watching your previous videos.
You seem to read very fast! I have The Quiet Tenant waiting for me, glad you liked it. And that you found your 5-star read!
That book is easily a 5 star book!
Omg I’m so late to this video but YES to the other side of night 🙌🙌 I’m so glad it’s finding its audience!
It’s so good!!!
Hated "Sometimes I lie". I immediately ordered "The other side of night" because I was in a huge funk. I have dnf'd the last three books I've tried but this one sounds good.
This was a fun journey!🙌🏽
Now I'm very excited to pick that one!
Loved Nowhere To Go Hide by Kerry Beevis. It was such a fun read!

Have you read An Ambush of Widows? I also loved No Exit and The Writing Retreat and think you would love it!

✨You’re making me add The Other Side of Night to my TBR! 📚
I loved Other Side of Night!!
Suggest Jar of Hearts from Jennifer Hillier. Much better than the one you read by her
Great vlog!!
7:38 that reminds me a certain book...

I'm currently reading the housemaid as per your recommendation.. Hope it would be very nice 😊
I haven’t read as many this year yet, but I haven’t found a 5 ⭐️ thriller yet either and need to. Maybe I’ll give The Other Side of Night a shot, it’s on my TBR.

Night Watching is good you should definitely give it a try😊
@@dixiechick6652 I just got this from the library, excited to hear you thought it was good!
Uhh when you said Alice Feeney for a start, I was just like “oh no, no way“. I read Rock Paper Scissors and gave it 2,5 stars because it felt so over-constructed… 🙈😅
Watching people react to The Other Side of Night is my biggest joy of 2024 😊
It’s so refreshing in a sea of disappointing thrillers!
Have you read strange Sally Diamond?
Have you read Out of the Easy by Ruta sepetye? That was a 5 star for me.
"Abducted" adult, maybe?
Have you read "One of the Girls" by Lucy Clarke?
I don't much anymore, I find most of the books now are cookie cutter types. But Nicola Vath: The Rule of Three by Donald Nelson, this one actually had a new storyline to it. It's a the first book of a trilogy. But I am hooked.
I loved this video!!
How do I follow you on goodreads ?
I can’t even cheat and go to authors I’ve already given 5 stars before bc with my luck, I end up hating the next book.
Okay, so for me, The Quiet Tenant was a 2 star, Things we do in the dark a 1 star, and The other side of night a 3 star. I haven't read the other two.
Audrey J Cole “The recipient”

You gotta read the butcher by jennifer hillier
I would hate to be an author and have you review my book. Lol. You analyze it to the umpth.
lol I read sometimes I lie when I first started booktube a long time ago… and it was one of my first thrillers I ever read and I was mindblown lol… I feel like if I read it now I would not be a fan 😂
The Jennifer Hillier one was predictable about 10% into it.
Love your videos and your lively presentation style.
Adult "kidnapping" I believe is an abduction--but I think the words are used interchangeably.
I love Jennifer Hillier, but that’s my least favorite book of hers.
Things were do in the dark is pretty boring and predictable
"abduction" instead of kidnapping probably..
I've never had any interest in an Alice Feeney book.....
Still don't 😂
The Quiet Tenant, pulse pounding? 🤯 Snooze fest!
