I just finished reading this the other day and loved it. It's definitely a book everyone should read!
Agreeeeeed
Great review. I want to read this soon.
So excited to read this! I remember hearing about it last spring, too--Angie graduated from my university a year before I went, so my professors were all super thrilled when she got the book deal :)
Finally read this one! It was well worth reading, exceeded my expectations
I'm so interested in this book, can't wait. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you Rincry! Your bookshelf on bookreads has provided me with some wonderful reading material!
I've heard so much about this book and its sounds amazing. I'm definitely going to have to check it out, and I'm so glad that you enjoyed it!
oooh I really want to read this!! I recently pre-ordered it, and I'm so excited about reading it
You certainly make me want to read this book. Very thorough and colorful review. New subscriber :)
I have heard so much about this book, this is it, I'm starting it today! Great review :)
You're right about the hype, and the four star rating. (Although I went ahead and gave it five stars.) I found the book hard to read...like a train wreck that I didn't want to watch but I had to watch. I knew where the plot was going, and I seeped with regret for the characters as the story unfolded. I always love your vlog reviews, Rincey. Keep it up!
Haha, I don't think that's a sign of being jaded-I've definitely been burned by the Overhyped-YA-Machine, but I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! I've heard such amazing things about it, and I'm thinking I need to add it to my TBR. I'm glad to hear there are so many perspectives represented here within the community, and I'm especially interested in learning what Starr's uncle has to say about being on the police force. Great review! Thank you for sharing that!
I have this book and I've been hesitant to dive into it, but maybe I will...soon. Thanks for sharing.
I'm also a bit jaded by the over-hyped YA books, but hearing your praise puts me at ease about this book. I plan to listen to The Hate U Give in audio format because Bahni Turpin is the narrator, and I trust her to do a beautiful job with the story. I'm currently listening to Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and I think this will pair as an excellent follow-up to it.
It totally lived up to the hype! Happy reading!
At first, I was put off by the relationship the main character had to branded products. I started to feel a sense of artificiality to the portrayal of,"blackness." As the story continued, more of the character's personalities were coming out and a sense of authenticity came into the narrative. I wonder how much the author worried about people attaching to a public concept of what black people do and what they like. The first few chapters compare with the last half of the book feels opposite in this regard.
For people who feel the same as I did at first, I hope they keep reading. I was surprised and impressed by this book for sure.
So excited to hear it! It's next up on my reading pile!
Wooo hoo!
Definitely hearing lots about this one! Really looking forward to it.
Hope you like it!
I've been hearing a lot of great things about The Hate U Give and can't wait to read it!
I love the film
I didn't really like this one very much. I agree that this a very important topic and that books like this one are necessary though! I just didn't connect with it, even though I was hooked in the beginning.
yes this is a great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
