The Karate Kid is obviously a classic and since I'm all hyped up on Cobra Kai, it felt like as good a time as any to go back and avoid the insane racism while really figuring out who the hero of the story is. Was Barney wrong? Is it the lifetime karate king? Or the pure of heart karate kid? Here's everything right with The Karate Kid! (1984)

What really scared me about Krease was knowing he’s in charge of kids and teens, he molded these kids into the monster they are. He has this whole unhinged persona that makes me wonder when he’s about to snap, his actor knocked it out of the park.

Honestly, Johnny is more an asshole because of how he treats Ali than because of how he treats Daniel. I mean he's still a bully to Daniel, but he's straight up sexually harrassing Ali.

The scene where we learn about Miyagi's wife and child not only endears him to us and makes us sympathize and empathize with his pain, but I find it is the most crucial in making the Master/Student relationship AND friendship of these two the most believable.

@@jnhzrk6841 In an interview he said that the only time physical contact was made was when Elisabeth Shue hit him in every take of the punching scene. his smile we see in the movie is his real surprise at getting actually hit in the face.

When Mr Miyagi's Medal of Honour was stolen, because I knew its significance and the pain it's a constant reminder of, I half expected Daniel to burn Johnny's dojo down with everyone still inside it and honestly, I would have been fine with that. Instead, he still didn't pick a fight. He lost his cool, yes, was even begging for a fight but still doesn't go for it. Instead he drops a nugget of wisdom, "You don't earn a Medal of Honour by stealing one." and I loved that.
Huh, come to think of it, it's really fitting that Kreese doesn't seem to have a Medal of Honour despite being so proud of his military background but the soft-spoken, peace loving man does...
Notice how Miguel several times questions his war story accounts and even corrects him
Hans Mökli you’d be surprised. I’d recommend looking up Roy Benavidez to start with personally. TLDR: he was critically wounded twice while fighting in vietnam. First was a land mine that by all accounts should’ve crippled him for life. He taught himself how to walk again through sheer stubbornness and immediately reenlisted. Second time was when a twelve man special forces team got pinned down by an enemy battalion. Dude charged in with nothing but a combat knife and a medical bag, fought the enemy battalion for 6 hours with what was left of the special forces team, saved 8 of them and ended up receiving 37 separate bullet, bayonet and shrapnel wounds. Then he eventually received a medal of honor, became a motivational speaker and author after retirement and died 30 years later of diabetes
How do you know that I mean I didn't watch Cobra Kai I would think that through the original trilogy is many times as Kris saved Terry silver sleigh and the fact that he was a captain and he was very good soldier that he would have received many medals maybe not in Gresham medal of Honor but I think they did that because what happened to me I he's wife which doesn't really match up with what you know goes on in karate kid 2 there's a serious continuity are there but whatever I think they felt bad for him because they did him wrong and they gave him a medal of honor because of that. If I had to pick one to go into battle with I would certainly pick Sensei Krisyes it's spelled wrong I'm not arguing with my worthless speaker today it's too early

Something a lot of people don't know: that particular bonsai tree became so popular because of this movie, they officially changed its name to the Miyagi bonsai.

one of my favourite things about this movie (besides it being a cinematic MASTERPIECE) is how natural the dialogues feel. they really nailed the casting for Daniel, but we all know that already. everything just feels so...realistic, despite the drama.
also, 3:10 is possibly my favourite scene in movie history
As a Japanese-American who grew up in Los Angeles, I really watched a lot of movies as a passing thing. Just a part of escapism to enjoy, and well to just have fun. Watching this film however really caught my attention as it was the first time I saw a Japanese-American being portrayed on screen. This really surprised elementary school, 3rd grade me, and when Mr. Miyagi was revealed to be a former 442nd member, it shocked me.
At that time I didn’t know Japanese-Americans were even allowed to fight for the US and I didn’t know of the sadness of the internment camps. This movie may have been the first time I actually learned of those two, and it was the kicking off point for me to learn my own history. I’m glad they kept that scene in, because it truly made Mr. Miyagi a moral yet conflicted character, and for the fact that the film didn’t shy away from talking about a side of history often glossed over. Thanks for the wonderful review.

I learned more about WWII and American History from that one scene than I did in school. I honestly believe [Mr. Miyagi] put me on the road for my love of WWII history.

Cutting that scene out would've been like losing the Indianapolis speech Quint gives in Jaws...it's not about the plot, but you learn so much about the character, and it's a scene everyone remembers.
You need to add a win for the tournament registrations scene, where Mr. Miyagi distracts the desk guy and steals a black belt from the bag to hand to Ali, so Daniel would have one to fight in the tournament. (That's why she's holding it in the next scene.)

Billy actually had a hard time remembering which leg to sweep, so much so, if you pay attention right before he does it, you can see Ralph pat his leg to remind Billy.
Whenever they weren't filming, the director told the audience to keep booing Billy to keep the momentum going. With his mom there.

How about Ralph getting hit in the face for real? Ralph gets a roundhouse kick hit in the jaw. Billy and Ralph had practiced the blocking but the director wanted to shoot a different angle but Billy didn't adjust so Ralph got the full force of the hit and had to drink his meals through a straw for a couple of days.
Finally, someone mentions the "aura" that this film seems to have! It feels so authentic, almost like a documentary sometimes. The set design is so phenomenal that it feels like you aren't watching a screen, you're looking through a window at a real place.
im happy they did the series, its a giant loveletter to this movie

That scene made me laugh when I was a kid watching this on hbo, and just now made me laugh again. Pat Morita has always been very good at comedy.
Fun fact: Had a college roommate that was named Daniel. Me and the other roommate called him Daniel-san, but he never seen these movies! So we spent a Saturday afternoon forcing him to watch them

I feel like people aren’t discovering the right stuff about Johnny. He wasn’t the hero, he was just a well written villain for the 80s.
I agree, because his girl broke up with him and he did try to FORCE her to do what she didnt want. I mean i like him and the Cobra Kai show, but i dislike how people suddenly become "experts". Sure, Daniel wasnt holy as well (i think the soccer foul isnt a reason to instandly start to attack someone... no wonder he got kicked out of the team) and the way he started the provocation over and over he really cant complain for becoming their target. I mean when you put a garden hose over someone (why was that in the bathroom?) it's very likely that you will get into a fight. That still doesnt make it ok that they wanted to beat him up so hard that they could've killed him AND THEN Jhonny is talking about this in Cobra Kai like they're the victims, because MrMiyagi did beat them up

@@nonspiderweb yes unfortunately people did. It's all over Cobra Kai RUclips videos and people have made video essays on it and everything. There really are tons of people who believe Johnny was the hero. I can't remember if it was on the trailer for Cobra Kai season 1 on RUclips, I think it was, but the comment section is chock full of it. It's honestly insane. You have to purposefully miss so much context to actually think Johnny was innocent the whole time.
@@jaminelvers7250 I think the whole point of Kobra Kai is that things are never as cut and dry as heroes and villains in the real world, esspecially when you are a teenager you look at things in black and white when really it is just about whose perspective you see things from. Looking back on it through the lense of Kobra Ki it is mostly trying to say people can be selfish and make bad decisions in the heat of the moment which we can come to regret, it does not make us bad people, just people who are still changing and learning.
Johnny and Daniel's versions of events in Cobra Kai are both skewed and biased but Daniel's is a bit closer to what really happened. The sad part is that Johnny absolutely *believes* his take on the story.
just a little nitpick, bonsais are not "baby trees" they're fully grown old trees that have been shaped and pruned for YEARS in order to make a life like "mini" tree.
He said it because Daniel calls them baby trees in the movie.

And regarding the thing at 16:58, for those that don't know:
They brought him back for cobra kai season 2, for a reunion with Johnny and the other guys as his last hurrah, cause he was dying of cancer, and the morning after, he passed away in his sleep. The last scene we see of him is the paramedics wheeling him away in a body bag.
It's even worse because shortly after that, he actually DID pass away in real life.
One point to make here, Mr. Myagi's wife and son were in a *American* concentration camp for citizens of Japanese ancestry, among others. The govenrment at the time illicitly used the census records to find people with as little as 1/16th Japanese heritage, i.e. one great-great-grandparent. They were required to leave their homes and businesses, taking only what posessions they could carry, to live in these less than well prepared camps "for the duration." Karate Kid is one of the few pieces of popular culture that references this and was how I, as a Brit, found out that it had even happened. Ultimately, between 1988 and 1992 $1.6 billion was paid in reparation to to some 81,000 people who had been affected... and were still alive.
Nicholas Cross came to comment on this. He said Japanese internment camp. It was a US internment camp for japanese, which makes it 1000x worse
I would say that this is actually an instance where Canada was worse. Canada had the same kind of camps, however they didn't get rid of them until years after the war and after the US did, I believe it was an extra 5 years for Canada. It is also not hard at all to connect the dots of how it happened, took a guy who was opening in a society all about keeping Canada white, and put him in charge of figuring out how to deal with Japanese people. He sent them away so their property could be stolen and sold by the government to white people. They weren't even sneaky about it or anything, it was so blatant, it is absolutely astounding.
Everyone did horrible things during that time, but we can't ignore any of them, just because someone else might have done worse.
@Hans Mökli well first off, I wouldn't go calling germany forward as some grand example. At least in the case of Japanese people in Canada, they weren't complicate in any kind of wrong doings, they had zero say in the government that wrong others, and could do absolutely nothing about what had happened or what was happening. In all forms they were completely and totally blameless. Germany in the other hand has a fair amount of debate around it. Not saying what was done to innocent people wasn't wrong, but a case for complicity and such can at least be made in general.
Either way I didn't really say anything about anyone paying for anything, I simply pointed out that it was worse in Canada and that wrong doings should never be ignored. I don't believe in ignoring it in any form. Just because the allies won doesn't mean we should ignore the bad things that many of them did during the war, it should be acknowledged and people should learn about it, especially in school.
Also yes Russia did terrible things, and actually that part does tend to be taught in school a decent amount, mainly because it makes Russia look bad and many textbooks are still based off of the cold war agenda. However the horrors that Germany inflicted on Russia actually tend to be skipped over far more often. Despite facts like it being the only time death squads marched with the regular forces to literally clear people out.
Also what was done to Germany after world war 2 was considered incredibly minor, and actually very lenient, mainly showing that lessons from after world war 1 had at least somewhat been learnt. Even though the second time around Germany was actually far more at fault than the first time (the first world war was really everyone fault equally, it just came to down right stupidity, and arrogance).
Edit: as for the Irish, I mean I honestly have no clue what has happened with that whole issue. I am unsure if Britain has ever made any kind of repetitions or acknowledged wrong doing or anything. I simply don't know enough about that situation to really speak on it.
@Hans Mökli and every one of those camps were terrible. In fact the type of comment you are reply to is basically meant to point out the fact that despite what some might think and are taught countries like the US weren't these perfect places that never did anything like what Germany and the Soviet Union did. Most everyone knows Germany and the Soviets had horrific camps, but the US and Canadian camps are taught about far less, which is not a good thing.
Also not really sure why you seem to have a specific issue with the French, mainly because I don't think they have anything to do with the conversation at hand what so ever. Mainly because during the time of these camps France didn't really have any kind of control over their country in order to make such camps. They had one small province they stayed in control of by trading all of their Jewish people for it, and I am unaware of any such camps being in that one small area.
It should also be noted that at least during world war 2 the camps in Germany in particular where on a whole other level than anywhere else. The Soviet Union would get to that point generally as well, but Germany is really the only one who made camps specifically meant to kill, and ultimately exterminate entire groups of people. What the US did was still very bad, but if nothing else it was at least not on that same level as Germany. The US and Canada wanted to take their homes and valuables, Germany wanted to take people's lives. There is at least a bit of a difference there.
@Hans Mökli yes and no, I won't deny the impact and role the treaty played in world war 2 coming about, but Germany and the German people are just as much to blame. The treaty certainly didn't help anything, but the German people still did always have a choice.
One also has to note the era you are in. Yes basically every European nation at some point invaded eachother for land and resources. However in the days of world war 2 it was kind of agreed that those days were generally done. At some point countries do have to progress past that point. It just seems that Germany was the last to try and do it, after basically all other countries had decided that enough was enough. I mean it was even supposed to be the main reason the league of nations was created.
Sorry but you can't really just point to the past and say "see they did it before" and suddenly justify it being done in a modern era. A country today can't really just point at England and say "you used to have slaves" in order to justify said country having slaves in this day and age.
Also as it turned out Germany did a lot more than simply invade and take land and resources. Typically France and Britain didn't try to systematically wipe out an entire group of people whole invading, especially people who made up a fair amount of their own citizens.
Edit: I would also like to add that, had world war 2 simply been a kind of repeat of world war 1, just maybe a bit more of Germany invading out of desperation from being hit harder by the great depression. People would not generally view Germany nearly as badly. The reason why there is the general idea of "Germany bad" as you say, from that time is because of what Germany did beyond simply invading for land and resources. Remember people now generally don't view Germany as the bad guys at all in world war 1, it is fully acknowledged that basically every other country was equally to blame, and that putting full blame on Germany at the end was wrong. World war 2 on the other hand ends up being a very different story, because invading other countries was by no means the only thing Germany did, unlike in the first world war.
When I was younger, I took karate lessons and at the dojo I went to, they would have what were called ‘dojo sleepovers’ for the younger kids like me where we basically just stayed at the dojo overnight with our Sensei and Senpai (basically the Sensei’s second in command), just hanging out. During the sleepover, we would watch one movie that we all voted on and just about every single time, we watched “The Karate Kid” (mainly because our Sensei loved it so much). It’s always nice seeing this movie pop up every now and then bc it is such a nostalgic movie for me. Thanks for reviewing this absolute gem!
extra points: the team behind the karate kid went to Okinawa and based Mr. Miyagi on an actual Mr. Miyagi. More realism.
The fighting style where Mr. Miyagi comes from starts with physical labour so that it weaves out the people that are just there to fight.
The hand-warms thing actually comes from the fighting style Miyagi comes from.
"the real Miyagi" based on Chujun Miyagi not Fumio Demura even though Demura was the one to travel from mainland Japan to the United States. There's a lot of hidden Gojyu Ryu teachings scattered in the movie and it's in that where you learn that it's not based on Fumio Demura. Demura trains in Shito Ryu. Mr. Miyagi trains in Gojyu Ryu. This is evident in Cobra Kai.

This is absolutely correct! I've trained in Goju-Ryu since 2005, and while there are LOTS of misconceptions about karate in this movie, Miyagi isn't one of them.
@@JakkFrost1 yes and the point Hannah was making was that the 'real Mr. Miyagi' mentioned in the film wasn't THE _real_ Mr. Miyagi. He _was_ the guy to come over to work with the film, but the filmmakers got inspired by and took the fighting style from _another_ dude, with a different fighting style.
the drunk Miyagi anniversary scene always devastated me. and i love the scene in the sequel where Daniel attempts to comfort Miyagi when he loses his father.
I like to think Johnny was always meant to have some humanity. His reluctance to go for the leg until directly ordered to goes back to what Miyagi said. No bad students, only bad teachers

After Daniel puts Miyagi to bed, he looks at him when bowing. Loved catching that moment in the scene.

@@aaronbradley3232 It's a nice callback to when Miyagi was telling him to always look someone in the eye out of respect. Miyagi was passed out drunk, Daniel bowed and "looked him in the eye". Daniel was being respectful to Miyagi on his own.

All these reasons are why this film is on my all-time favorite movie list. I had actually been bullied at work that day, after a bunch of us had made plans to see this. I was almost late to the theatre but got there just as the curtain went up. The audience loved it and at the end ,"the big kick", we all just exploded with cheers.
The fact that Daniel sees Miyagi for how human and fragile he is, and then has respect for him because of that. Oof. Gets me every time.

14:08 So, when I was a teenager I trained in martial arts for a little bit, I participated in a single tournament. When we arrived at the location, it was exactly like it's portrayed in this film. Not so much regarding the interior and overall layout, but about the "terror" of having to fight in your first tournament, being unsure of the rules and how everything involved works and functions. When I walked in, there were sign up and registration (or more like check in) tables, then we proceeded around a corner where the tournaments were actually unfolding in a gym and... yeah. Hectic, chaotic, terrifying and exhilarating all at once. I felt like I stepped into the Karate Kid movie, didn't help the fact that "Cruel Summer" was playing loudly over the speakers.
i did karate for a very short amount of time when i was a kid, also only did one tournament and you’re so right whole thing was so scary and confusing i had no idea what i was doing lmao

@northern_lights Which is why in the Karate Kid III, they changed the relationship with Robin Livley's character as Ralph was 28 and Robin was 16 and Ralph felt it was kinda creepy, which is why it was changed to her having a boyfriend back home and they just stayed friends.
I bought the headband replica off Amazon. The movie is even better wearing it.
9:06 it's also possible that Daniel decided to take the band-aid off for his date so he would look better and her parents wouldn't ask about it.
One thing that always bothered me about the dancing at the country club scene. Johnny forces a kiss on Ali, she shoves him off and yells "Don't you ever do that to me again!" If I'm her father, even if I didn't see the kiss, my immediate reaction to seeing her push him away and hearing her yell like that is to get in between Ali and Johnny. In a "I don't know what you did, Johnny, but she didn't like it and I'm going to make sure that you don't do it again," type of way. And then her punching him, my reaction would've been "You deserved that and you're lucky I don't do the same thing." My reaction would not have been to make sure that Johnny is okay and to get mad or be disappointed by my daughter.
At least Johnny did get punished by his mother according to one of the Cobra Kai comics.
19:34 Have to say, I know where Daniel's coming from. I do stage combat, and I've fought with injuries before (abdominal tear being the worst), not because I had to, but because it felt really defeatist to put in all that time learning the fight choreo and weapon techniques, only to bow out at the last second. Sometimes it's not about getting the girl, or pride, it's just about seeing something through to the end, especially when you've worked hard for it.
Please review "Atlantis the Lost Empire" it is honestly underrated and underappcreciated. Please review it before Disney ruins it too 😅

@@a.r.hollowayauthor7210 Actually, there was a movie with three individual stories that would have been the start of a series, much like what Tarzan did. Unlike Tarzan, Atlantis failed, so there isn't actually a series, just three episodes smashed together.
That part with the Cobras in the background when Daniel and his mom are in the restaurant always cracks me up

Karate Kid movie was one of those movies that everything aligned and came together in one movie. Acting, story, music, perfect casting, cinematography, writing, dialogue, memorable and iconic scenes, etc.

Honestly what I love the most, is how so many of the shots are very long takes. The camera doesn't move much and it is very basic but something about really watching the actors go off in a scene that never cuts works so well. Specifically the scene where Daniel throws his bike in the trash. So much of that moment was one take and the scene was much more genuine feeling.
To be honest, this acting is still better than most Nickelodeon movies.

Personally, my favorite is Karate Kid 2; you get more backstory with Mr. Miyagi, and that whole scene with his father has an extra punch to it, especially for those of us who lost a parent.
The fact that Ralph Maccio still has that yellow 1947 Ford Super De Luxe tells you just how much he cares for the memories he had with Pat Morita. Even now, I think this movie still can teach important lessons.

I want to give Avildsen credit for how quickly Kreese is established as a realized character. He (Kreese) views karate as a continuation of the life or death war he fought-one the US lost-and wants soldiers, not to develop the character of his students. He is a villain, but one whose motivations make sense and aren’t bad except for the context of the story. I know this changes as the series progresses, but where we the audience get many hints that Johnny is a good kid, we see his master teaching the lesson that every challenge is a battle to be fought and won (because Kreese cannot accept the loss in Vietnam and is going to make sure his soldiers do not lose) instead of any of the more reasonable approaches. Johnny comes to respect Daniel during the tournament, and while Johnny wants to win, his no longer wants to hurt Daniel. Kreese needs for Johnny to win, not for Johnny but for his own sense of worth. He cannot let his soldiers down and likewise he needs for them to win to prove that what he has been doing has value. And Avildsen gets all of that done with the service picture of Kreese, the tattoo, and the few instances of drill instructor posturing.
"You're alright, Larusso." I never heard that line before, but it is CRUCIAL to humanizing Johnny. He gained respect for the kid he was bullying, but he still had to deal with the loss and the abuse of his own sensei who cared only about winning.

That nod that Myagi gives as Daniel sets up for the crane kick looked like he was giving Daniel permission to do the kick, but he was also nodding because he knew Daniel was about to win.
If it isn't already, this movie should be mandatory to watch at film making school.
1) The writing.:
a) The story is excellently told-just like building a house. The story lays a foundation and then builds up.
b) The script had knowledge of martial arts, more specifically Bushido-which is the code of the kodokan (the kodokan is to martial arts as Oxford is to higher education). In many movies the script writer is pulling "facts" from thin air.
2) Chemistry between the leads. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita had a very natural chemistry that makes the story work.
3) This piggybacks onto 2, but the casting for this movie was perfect.
4) Directing-pretty much every movie starts with "A (insert name) Film". Often the director thinks he is the be all end all and knows more than everyone. A wise leader picks his subordinates very well and does a wise job of managing them. This director did just that.
5) Acting-Pat Morita came into this movie mostly known as a comedic actor. Pat had depth, the type of depth Robin Williams had. Robin was hilarious with his stream of consciousness humor, but Dead Poets Society proved that Robin could do a lot more than just tell jokes. Karate Kid proved Pat Morita could do a lot more than wisecrack.

It is said that, between comedy and drama, comedy's harder. Now, yeah, some comedic actors can't make the switch to drama, can't let go of being "funny." But the same timing, commitment, and sincerity that makes comedy work makes drama work.
In my humble opinion... It's Legacy. The Karate Kid is a lesson on respect, balance, honor, within one's life and what a person can discover if you don't "judge a book by its cover"

I really liked Season 1, but Season 2 just IMO felt too forced. The references to the movie became more ham-handed, and the conflicts were both too contrived and predictable. The season finale just had me going, "Oh, come on! Really? Why is everyone being so dumb?" I cringed at its predictability. Again, just IMO.
But sincere kudos for the fight choreography. So much better than the fights in many films that insert cuts every other second.

Actually, in most professional Karate Tournaments, at least when I competed a little over a decade ago, there are rules regarding strike control, so while Johnny would still have gotten the point for both the strikes that caused and exploited the injury, he should have been given a formal warning for each. Consistent poor control will get you DQ'd

Oliver TWIST Exactly! well-written/well-developed character does not equal them being a good person, just like a tragic backstory doesn’t justify abusive/toxic behavior.
I think its more that Daniel was kind of a dick also in some moments. I definitely wouldn’t say to the same amount as Johnny but definitely was still pretty immature but they’re teenagers so it makes sense he would be.
It's also worth mentioning that both were heavily influenced by extremely manipulative and abusive parents/adults in their lives, but then went on to have at least an amicable relationship with their one-time rival/enemy after they grew up a little more and came to terms with their past.
Johnny isn't the hero by any means, but he's not a villain. He's an antagonist sure, but he's not a villain.
The Awkward Gamer Yeah exactly. I think thats why The Karate Kid was so far ahead of its time and how Cobra Kai managed to be such a great show. Neither characters perfect but at the same time they each had their charm. They were both like able so it was easy for the Cobra Kai characters to establish both Daniel and Johnny as protagonists (even if Johnny is mostly the main character)

My thought about the Daniel finding out about Mr. Miaygi's wife and son dying in an interment camp is that it was losing his wife and son that led to Miaygi getting the Medal of Honor. Like after getting the news that they had died, Miaygi went a little crazy and put himself in dangerous situations, perhaps wanting to die to be with them, but I'm going to take as many enemies as I can with me, but because he is such a badass he survived it. It would also make sense that he keeps the medal with the letter, because he ties those two events together.
Must have watched Karate Kid, many times & never noticed it before, at 7:48 on the left in the Cobra Kai Dojo, Lamar as one of the students. Who would have ever thought you could be a 'Nerd' & a Cobra Kai karate student in the same year.

I love the fact that the style of karate in this film is actually based off of an actual historic Japanese karate style called Go-Ju Kai, meaning "hard (fist), soft (open hand/blocking) karate". I did this style for a long time and, I think it's in karate kid 2 and is definitely in cobra Kai, there are scenes of Daniel doing katas (like seinchin) and photos of the Go-Ju founder, Gogen Yamaguchi. (Go-Ju Ryu is the same as Go-Ju Kai if you end up looking it up)

Ralph is the one cool celebrity I have seen in real life. He was at the Mohegan sun, CT, comic con. I went with my dad and brother.
As a millennial (born 96') this movie exemplified my upbringing. I never fit in, was bullied (not to the point of violence luckily) and when I first seen this film in 2004 at 8 years old it changed my life. Daniel LaRusso was a character I could identify with while every other kid was identifying with Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker. I asked my Father to enter me in our local Karate school and after some convincing he reluctantly agreed. I am so glad he did because it's something I've never lost hand in. I became the youngest 3rd Degree Black Belt in the state of Tennessee's history. And before anyone I have Daniel LaRusso & Mr. Miyagi to thank for who I am today.
Please do everything great about the cornetto trilogy (shaun of the dead, hot fuzz and the worlds end) it is the best trilogy that isn't chronological

I was born into a karate school owned by my dad. For the first 6 years of my life, "you're the best" haunted me every day. I do find it very amusing to look back it and pick at the smaller things.
I think a series a lot of people will thoroughly enjoy you covering is the Narnia series. Particularly the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Please try to do "The Gentlemen" by Guy Ritchie. It's a really good movie, and surely deserves a cinema-win.

You managed to see past the flaws and trite and reveal what the true underlying story between Daniel & Miyagi/Johnny & Kreese really was: Different but same. You NAILED their character descriptions in a way I've never heard before--especially when you described Miyagi's inner turmoil and what drives him. Life lessons we can all take and use to make life better.
I wish you could have seen this movie when it came out in theatres. I wish you could have been in the audience when everyone held their breath and then applauded at the culmination of Daniel's tasks coming to fruition. Or when you could hear a popcorn kernel fall to the floor when Pat Morita gave one of the best performances ever filmed and left everyone in tears. I wish you could have seen the Crane Kick on the big screen. I thank God I was born when I was, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
That said, you MUST do KK II!!! I want to see you really delve into the "Father/Son" storyline of the movie that critics ignored and panned.
P.s. It might be blasphemy, but Miyagi is better than Yoda; that is why I named my daughter's dog Mr. Miyagi.

The song played during the tournament was originally supposed to be a big hit for Rocky III, but they decided not to, I think because they thought it wasn't powerful enough. So they went out and got Eye of the Tiger written for them.

Johnny is like the prototype for Thanos. He’s not compelling because he’s right, he’s compelling because he’s believable. You believe that someone in his shoes and with his backstory could come to believe he’s in the right, even though he’s absolutely not.
As a kid I never really understood why Miyagi was always so reserved, even with the scene about his wife and child. It all kind of went over my head and I gauged my reactions off of character reactions within the scenes, but now I get the gravity of his backstory and what he lost while he fought for a place that saw him as an enemy.
I know Myagi has a fake accent, but it's oddly realistic. My grandpa didn't speak English until first grade and in his old age is starting to forget and has already completely forgot tagalog even though he was born in the US

I only saw this film the first time while a late teenager, and I connected with it strongly thanks the fact that I had a Mr. Miyagi of sorts in my life. A WWII vet name Mr. Eugene Lakatos, who survived the Battle of the Bulge and was a school tutor, helping me get on track with my schooling and homework through Middle and High School. He has a special place in my heart, as I never knew my maternal grandfather, and he had a grandfatherly role in my life.

This movie has a special place in my hearts. It, Star Wars and A Charlie Brown Movie were what i watched while recovering from various surgeries when i was young. Unfortunately, i havent seen it in a long time and there are things youve said that i admitedly missed the significance of. So thanks. Also, as a WWII history buff, special thanks for calling attention to Miagi's service and its unfortunate outcome. Its an all-to-real senario that shouldnt have happened
