      What year did you take cosmetology? I ask because, up until about 5-10yrs ago the majority of black women were only interested in straight hair. For a lot of women, wearing out their natural hair simply wasn't an option (until of course we changed our mindsets in recent years).
      So I think that's why your cosmetology classes only taught about relaxed hair.
      If however your classes were more recent, then yeah, I agree with the other comments, it's time they changed their curriculum to include natural hair types.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been natural for 2.5 years and have been at shoulder length the entire time. I was starting to think it was because I have 4b/4c hair, but it’s because it’s been experiencing breakage this entire time! Last year, I always wore my hair out during the day and did braid outs every single night. I’ve started to deep condition every week, cut off the brittle ends I’ve been hanging on to, using the LCO method while putting my hair in twists, and wearing wigs. I suffer from drier hair as well so I moisturize my twists every other day. I’ve only just started doing this about a month ago, but I’m already feeling like my hair is doing SO much better!

    I felt you when you said you have to know your hair. It’s so true. My hair didn’t “grow” until I knew how to properly care for it. Now it’s thriving. People ask me all the time what I use bc my hair health and growth is noticeable and I tell them I can tell you what I use but essentially it’s what’s you’re doing to your hair. Btw your 2014 hair length pic at 10:10 is my hair length right now. Never thought I would ever reach this length. Now I have my hair goal set at waist length. Weirdly I don’t do the hair porosity thing

      I just started my natural hair Journey maybe about two and a half years ago I'm learning every day my hair now is about waistline but I'm still wanting to grow it another 4 inches and I figure it'll take me maybe about to 2 years and I am a older person so a woman so I know as you get older your hair grows slower but I've learned a lot because my head Journey started about two and a half years ago and they said it takes about five years to really grow you know a substantial amount of here and I'm saying ways lane or you know down to your tailbone and that's what I was going for down to my tailbone but it's a lot of work I don't believe in a natural hair community cuz we all don't live together I believe that we are women data trying to grow out hair and have healthy hair also so that we can keep it at the lengths that we wanted to be and keep it healthy because I've noticed around me that there are a lot of women that either you know maybe they have health challenges I don't know but I know a lot of them that I've known for a long. Of time they have had perms and a lot of dying and in a lot of damage and I don't know if they're on medication because I don't go there but a lot of them don't believe that they can grow hair so a lot of them have lox and that's okay but a lot of older women don't believe that they can grow here and I've learned I've learned and I'm so glad I learned because I'm maintaining my Lang there's a lot of women when you talk about oils and moisturizers they think it's for white people are Indian people but not for African Americans or black people they don't believe it oh that's not for me that's what Indian people and I move on you know and I do my thing but that wondering how did she get the length I get the line because I practice what I preach and I Don't Preach too much only to myself my children my girls but I want them to have healthy hair just like I took them to the dentist because I wanted them to have a healthy mouth and beautiful teeth I want them to have beautiful hair that'll last them from now until and it's very important because there's a lot of people out there that will sell sell you. I agree 100%. I was doing so well when I first started, figuring out what worked for me and what didn't (no coconut oil for me)! Then I got depressed; really depressed for years. And everything reversed. My hair matted and broke off to the point where I am back to where I started when I first cut everything off. But I know where my hair can go. It might be super coiled and look short, but length-wise it was past shoulder length. And it will be again. You seem so sweet and caring. Great video.

    Many fail to realize that protein is vital for curly hair. My hair is 4c (high porosity) and I’m very careful with products that contain alcohol. I make my own shampoo using raw aloe vera, water, and coconut oil. All that is mixed in a blender and tada! natural home made shampoo. Trust me, it lathers like wow. I use hemp and baoboa conditioner after. I wash my hair every other day. Also food intake plays a vital role as well. I’ve been all natural for 2 years now. No heat/chemicals.
    I use to wash my hair every day but I switched it up to every other. It has gotten so thick and more work 😬🙋🏻😁

      MRS J It’s from Shea Moisture (Mongongo Hemp Seed) blue container. You can purchase it from either Sally’s Beauty Supply, Walgreens, CVS, Target, or Walmart for $12.99-13.99 the most. Noticed I stated on my comment I’m very careful with products that contain alcohol. When you do decide to purchase the conditioner I mentioned, don’t be alarmed by the Cetearyl, Stearyl, Cetyl Alcohol. Those are good fatty alcohols derived from vegetables (fats). Commonly used to emulsify hair products, cosmetics, etc. The ones you would want to avoid are Ethanol, Isopropyl, Methanol, and Denat Alcohol. But those are mostly found in skincare but I’ve also seen them in hair care products as well. Those alcohol are drying. 🙋🏻

    I love how in depth and personal you go into your videos, it is more honest compared to other channels. I started my natural hair journey my last year of high school in 2012-2013. I was shocked that I saw a community of diverse colored melanin women who were growing their natural hair long and healthy. I always struggled to get passed the "shoulder length" stage. No one taught curly haired girls how to care for our hair. I did a big chop in 2017 d/t color damage (my hair was APL) and now it is at bra strap length. I need to be more gentle and mindful again - the only thing I have skipped in my hair care routine are deep conditioning treatments lol Thanks for sharing and taking the time to create your content!

    Wow, I really needed this! Not even just for info on proper hair care but for my emotional and mental health as well. I did not realize how stigmatizing i was towards my own hair texture. I am so insecure about my natural hair. I thought that i could never grow long hair because i have never seen it around me or if i did, it's because they were mixed. I am tired of wishing that i was someone else or a different ethnicity because of my hair texture. I realized that i treated my hair the exact same way i thought about my hair; but it is all lies. 2022 this will be a goal of mine! Healthy and flourishing hair !! Thats me, my hair is 4a & 4b, high porosity and medium density. My hair also just like to be left alone, i just do twists, twist out, high puff and braids only 3 times in the year because my edges are naturally very fine. My hair likes thick butters, heavy oil like castor oil. I have been natural for 1 year and 9 months and it took me 6 months before I understood what my hair wanted and I just stuck with it. Most importantly I let my hair be and my hair is flourishing.

      The early stages is the time to experiment and figure what type of products and the routine that works for you😎. Paying attention to how your hair feels and react to products and the regimen you have it in. Does your hair feel great after and for days after using a product or does it feel dry and tangled a day or so later. For the sake of your hair and purse, experiment with products that you wouldn’t have an issue buying multiple times especially when the purse strings get a bit tight! But be aware that your hair will react different with the seasons and also as it gets longer. I find spray leave-in conditioners a waste of money and you can make up your own that will be way cheaper. I didn’t realise I had all that to say 😂😂 good luck on your journey!

I think I fell out of love with my hair when I started turning gray (I do color it and I am relaxed). I think, or should I say I KMOW, the main issue for me was that I. Was. Not. Consistent. Now I shampoo and apply a treatment mask every Monday and if I feel I need it I’ll add a tad of jojoba oil since it closely resembles human sebum (oil). So I guess I’ll be in my mid sixties rocking my long hair when others are cutttng theirs off.

    Hi 😀 new subscriber here. About a year ago I stopped following so many others regimen. All the differences you named was talking about "ME". Everyday I was watching and picking up others ideas that worked for them. Now..my hair is so beautiful at slightly passed bra length due to learning my own hair likes/dislikes.

      I hear you on that one. I finally realised last year that butters (shea, mango etc) are to heavy on my strands and stop me re-moisturising my between washes. Now I use leave-in and oil or styling creme for styling. Making that change vastly improved the quality of my hair.

    alright (virtual fist bump) Thanx for the uplift!!! Let me tell you I wanted long hair since i was SIX YRS OLD. lol Recently I have been in my own hair journey, I have found out that my hair is low porosity. Game changer I did dc with heat. and eventually started moisturizing with h2o, and oils (avocado, joba, olive(ride or die) mango butter( I know its thick but it works 4 me).
    The alternating hairstyles for me is flexirod( airdry most ) and Flatwrap. btw Im relaxed . thx for the share

    This is a great and informative info. I just started learning about my hair and all it needs to flourish is simply oil and water. The same ingredients my mom used when I was a child. I have the same hair texture and issues like your as well

      Nadia D water and raw oils don’t mix so be careful with putting oils on your hair. The best products to use are water-based ones.

    My hair has always grown 1 inch per month. I cut 1 foot off every year. My HUGE problem is that the middle is kinkier than the sides so i look like a mushroom. Coiled, shorter hair in the back and long straight hair on top and sides. I want it to grow or look even. I wear a bun or ponytail most of the time. Could that be the problem? I don't like any hair on my face. I'm also DESPERATELY searching for natural, clean makeup. No chemicals. Any suggestions on either of these 2 issues?

    My hair is low porosity & I’m using butters mostly ☹️ idk what to use! I definitely deep condition with heat but I don’t know it’s so sad to be stuck at the same length ☹️

      Jenny Bravo Stop with the butters sis! My hair has flourished since I’ve stopped. Just like she said, those buttes stop you from receiving moisture-which is the key to retaining length anyway!

    • @jadeh7746

      Im at armpit length at the moment. Use black seed oil hemp oil and a little bit of jbco mix it together and use it to seal in your leave ins. Find a protective style that suits you whether its wigs braids or twists. Trim the bad ends holding onto bad ends stunts growth. Aim to deep condition every week or every two weeks. Try shea moisture Manuka honey mask. Dont touch your hair unless you need to moisturise restyle or wash it. Try bentonite clay and acv as a mask it helps to open up the cuticles and allows more moisture to come in. It also cleans the hair without it being dry and defines curls. Never used chebe clay before but I heard its good you can give ti a try and see how it goes.

    • @nbb319
      @nbb319 5 лет назад +1

      Hemp oil is the truth ! And I don’t understand why it is such an underrated oil. Otherwise, when deep conditioning, put a shower cap on so the moisture can penetrate better in your hair. When you want to put products in it, or you wet your hair with warm water or you heat your products ( not in plastic ) and put it in your hair. Also don’t forget to do the “ pray hands “ method because it will help the products to penetrate your hair because if you only throw it in your hair, it won’t fully go in it. Also sleeping with a satin scarf / bonnet / pillow will help. If you do this and what the others advised you to do, you’ll have significant changes. And also be patient because the changes won’t be noticeable on the length in a first hand

    I'm moved to a totally different climate and had to revamp my whole regimen. My hair was so dry, damaged and nothing, no product I use worked. First, I had to change my water by adding the filter. I had spent so much money on products, I decided to change from products to diys. (except as I am deep mask, leave in conditioner) Even with those changes, it took me months to figure out what was going to work with my hair. All the while my hair was breaking off, I think I lost about 3" but one day I figured it out. Go figure my hair loves coconut oil now. I made some Cocoa butter body cream and on a whim I put it on my hair as a sealant and my hair loves it too. I started stretching my hair by blowdrying it weekly (a natural hair no no, but works wonders for my hair) on low with the revair now my hair is so moisturized, soft and growing like a dang weed. (Revair is the truth, dry leaving hair so moisturized and my curls bounce back weekly with no problem) Who knew, trial and error. I only wish I didn't have I closet full of half used products smh.

    New Subbie here! I truly enjoyed your video! I'm still learning my hair after being natural for many years and having several setbacks. I'm finally starting to pay attention to what my hair needs.
    Hair porosity is so important and I believe not understanding my hair's porosity was a major reason I struggled. So, that is my focus now. Also, I was probably a little too rough when I handled my hair.
    You definitely have to speak life over yourself.....words have power.
    I am speaking it into existence now! I am living in abundance in all aspects of my life! My hair will be healthy and long!

Literally the back left quadrant of my hair is high porosity dark black (the rest is like ash black) 3b curls and texture. And it’s always annoyed me

    Hi.. First time here find u interesting.. Yes I hv low porosity. Stuck at 11 inches at back... Loved the pics from Namibia. I found natural hair really really the hardest thing I've ever done. So hard to grow - didn't expect this fight! The wet look perm in the 80s was a dream!. And I got long hair then ! My hair is so fine. Lp, so so dry. Will be investigating your other videos!!

    Everybody hair grows. Unfortunately the retention method is the issue for most. Most naturals in my community don't have a regiment. Don't know their porosity or hair type. Don't understand single strand knots. Don't do the loc method at least twice a week. Don't stretch every day. Stretching my twists on wash day is how I got to waist length. I don't use heat unless I'm deep conditioning under the bonnet.

      Kendall Sawyer No, many of us wore 'groomed' afros / naturals, afro puffs(females wore them , not the males) and corn rows or french braids. Many began getting perms, and still getting press and curls. It was not like the natural hair styles of today, not the depth of natural hair care. I loved this information, and I am now a subscriber. Thank you. Be Blessed. 🙏❤

    I’ve been very discouraged for the past few years over how my hair is doing. Your video is very informative and interesting. I’m born and raised in Sweden and there’s never been hair salons specifically for girls with kinky/coily hair (4c) like mine, don’t get me wrong we have the typical hairstylist and hair dressers but no one who has the knowledge of how to keep and take care of your own hair in the typical African salons. I wish we could have the same knowledgeable and professional hair specialists in Sweden as you Americans have as well. I’ve been taking care of my own hair for years now but it’s reached a plateau stage that I have no idea how to get past armpit length, i washed my hair today and so many little hairs where falling out of my hair as well as long strands. I do keep my hair in protective styles such as wigs,weaves and box braids and wash it 1-2 a week and deep condition when I got box braids or a wig in, but I’ve run out of ideas?

      Linda Butandu protein treatment, that’s why u need ( make sure to know about your porosity to know what products your hair likes). I don’t really consider wigs and weaves as protective styles because it damages the edges, let your hair breathe

    I heard terminal length was a thing is this true? I always hear that from other youtubers but u said no matter our hair identity we could grow long hair

    • @PowerInYourCurl
      @PowerInYourCurl  5 лет назад +17

      Hey! Thank you for asking this question, it's a really good one. :) Terminal length is a concept you can decide for yourself to believe in. For me personally, I don't put limits on anything. I have seen my hair grow longer than I ever thought possible and I have seen the hair of women all over the world no matter what their skin color or curl pattern grow past tailbone length, to their knees, to the floor and some women have hair that trails behind them as they walk. I believe that if you are healthy and your hair is at optimum health it will continue to retain length and become longer. As Divine Energy, anything that I truly desire to have is possible for me. No matter what the odds or what the physical world says. Words and thoughts are powerful and I truly believe that what you believe is possible for you is what you will live; and that can work to your advantage or your detriment depending on the quality of your thoughts.
      As far as what science says about hair growth, most sources think that the hair growth cycle for the average human is 5-7 years. Now if hair grows an average of 6 inches a year, that means that the average human can attain a minimum of about 30 inches of hair. Which is still pretty long for most people! I am not an average person though and neither are you, we are Divine and powerful. Also, there are a lot of things that science says that simply isn't true and you have to be very intentional about what you choose to believe and not just accept something as truth because an "authority" said it was so.
      At the end of the day, it's up to you. ❤️

    Great positive video. You have beautiful hair. I wish you much success. I've read somewhere that hair length is genetics and was compared to the height of person. For example: The article stated that not everyone will be tall; some will be short, hence the same with hair. I personally don't believe this but I wanted to know do you believe genetics play a part in hair length at all?

  • @mel-nacole8312
    @mel-nacole8312 5 лет назад

    Wow! You really spoke to me directly!!! ❤️ Thank you so much for taking the time to put this out there! Because I was really ready to give up! This is my 2nd time going natural and it's been about 2 years so far, (about the same time as I decided to chop it off and relax again on my first try 😔) and I'm really trying to give my hair a chance to show me it can reach new lengths literally 🙄 even though lately I have been really discouraged and ready to cut it (no relaxer this time) because it just stops at this point, or gets chopped at this point, relaxed or natural 🤔All I've been thinking is why wait for another 2 or 3 more years to not see any difference? Some people are just meant to have short hair right? Looking at others growth to me didn't do anything but make me think maybe that's in their genes, and made me even more discouraged. I was looking around at my family members like maybe my hair really doesn't grow past a certain length, maybe it's meant for it to be short. Truth is I really don't have any natural hair examples to follow from the older generations, just like you said. It's a shame really because I love my curls, I was just like you not even knowing that my hair would do that. Now, here I am trying to teach my daughter how to help her natural hair from birth to flourish, when I'm just learning in adulthood about my own. You have really opened my eyes and I guess I'll put the scissors down for now! Time for a new way of thinking! Thanks again 👑
